MERRY CHRISTMAS....YOU GONNA DIE

Thanks to having to recap this show, I will never be able to watch National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Had the ending ruined by tuning in early to catch Raw. Curse you, McMahon!

Monday Night Raw is LIVE from Chicago, Illinois, which is not yet its own state.

CM Punk's music opens the show, but it's not Punk . . . it's Johnny Ace, who is wearing a "Best in the World" t-shirt over his suit. He gets a fair amount of heat, though there's some weird microphone feedback as he starts his promo. About thirty seconds in to Johnny talking, Punk's music hits again, and the real deal comes out to the ring. There are big "CM Punk" chants when the music stops. The size difference between Punk and Ace is pretty ridiculous. Punk says it's clear Ace is trying to antagonize him and wants to know what should stop him from kicking Johnny in the face. The former AJPW star tells us that he could easily fire Punk if he wanted to, but he won't do that because he's "taken several management classes" and aims to "empower [his] employees." Those were good lines.

Punk and Ace get into a fight over whether Ace is capable of being "unpredictable," so Johnny tries to resolve the debate by booking Punk in a 3-on-1 gauntlet match, with anybody who pins the champ getting a title match on next week's show. Punk requests his own stipulation be added, namely that he gets Johnny Ace in the ring tonight if he successfully beats the three gauntlet match opponents. The crowd starts chanting "you can't wrestle" at Ace. Punk's response is, "It looks like they've been watching All Japan tapes!" I think that gives me immunity from being bitched at for namedropping the company a paragraph ago.

Eventually, Punk and the crowd work together to goad Johnny into accepting the challenge, and that's a wrap on our first segment.

As Punk celebrates with his belt, the latest January 2, 2012 mystery man promo airs. "He shall arrive to reclaim what is his" is the first line. "The End Shall Begin" is the tag line at the end. Chris Jericho strongly denies that the promos are for him, but it would make a lot of sense for him to come back with a gimmick playing off of the 2012 apocalypse predictions given that his WWE debut was based on Y2K.

Match Numero Uno: Booker T. vs. Cody Rhodes in a non-title match

The announcers play up the fact that Cody ambushed Booker twice prior to the pair's pay per view match, perhaps giving Rhodes an unfair advantage. They also recap Booker costing Cody his match against Zack Ryder on Friday.

The wrestlers lock up at the bell, and Booker grabs a hammerlock. Cody slips out of it quickly and hits a shoulderblock off of the ropes before the Book-man hiptosses him. Booker rains down the chops in the corner and hits a scoop slam for a two count. Cody starts to come back with some fists and sends the 5-time WCW Champ into the corner. Book reverses an Irish whip, though, and he also hits a back elbow to set up a vertical suplex. It gets a one count. Booker kicks the IC Champ in the gut and looks for an axe kick, but Rhodes blocks it and lands the Shake, Rattle, and Roll. Next Cody pulls down his kneepad and buries the joint into Booker's gut, eventually tossing him out of the ring. That's the setup for our mid-match commercial break.

We're back from the ads, and Rhodes has Booker in something that looks sorta like a kimura, but Booker powers his way out of it and sends Rhodes to the buckles. He charges in for some follow-up offense, but Rhodes lifts his elbow and catches Booker in the jaw. Cody drops a knee for a two count and slaps on a neck crank. Booker rallies back up to his feet and starts a comeback, but he makes the mistake of dropping his head, giving Cody an opportunity to rip off his brother Goldust's drop-down uppercut. Rhodes puts the boots to Booker as he leans against the ropes in a heap, but he poses for the crowd and gives Booker an opportunity to recover somewhat. The two trade punches, but Rhodes wins the sequence by busting out his standing dropkick. It gets two. Cody slaps on another nondescript submission hold, and he cuts off Booker's attempt at a comeback with a knee to the gut.

Rhodes runs into a back elbow and then a boot, though, giving the former Harlem Heat member an opening to connect with a series of clotheslines and then a sidewalk slam for two. Booker gets the O' Connor Roll out of the corner for another two count, and Rhodes comes back with a cradle for two of his own. Booker attempts the axe kick but misses, and Rhodes cradles him again for yet another two count. From there, Rhodes hits the ropes and comes off with the Nakajima kick for yet another nearfall. Cody sets up for Cross-Rhodes, but Book reverses it into a side kick. Cody avoids a side kick, but, seconds later, he gets caught with the scissor kick and pinned. This was a bit dull in the early going, but it picked up with the nearfalls at the end and turned into a fun match.

Winner: Booker T.

Backstage, Zack Ryder thanks John Cena for giving him the opportunity to win the United States Title. Cena says that Ryder doesn't owe him anything and says that Zack created his own opportunity. Ryder wants to know what the deal with Kane is, and Cena doesn't really answer the question but instead promises to beat Kane up if he sees him this evening.

We go to the announce desk, and Lawler announces that CM Punk's three opponents this evening will be Jack Swagger, Dolph Ziggler, and Mark Henry.

Kelly Kelly and Big Show are flirting until Scott Armstrong runs up and tells Show that he is needed in Johnny Ace's office. We go to a commercial, so apparently this will pay off later in the show.

After the break, Johnny Ace and David Otunga are in the back. Ace is on his phone with Brodus Clay and promises that Clay will debut on the first Raw of 2012. Big Show appears, and Ace wants an explanation as to why he punched out David Otunga on Smackdown. Show says that he can beat Otunga with one arm tied behind his back, which leads to Ace booking that match with that exact stipulation. Show says a giant with one arm is better than a smug lawyer with no testicles.

Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler are arguing about which one of them is going to beat CM Punk. Ziggler tells Swagger to ask Santa for a time machine so he can got back to 2009 when he was relevant. Actually, I remember that title reign, and he wasn't relevant then, either, even when he had the World Heavyweight Title. Vickie tries to play peacemaker, until Mark Henry walks up and interrupts them with "Excuse me." Funny bit that didn't really hurt Henry's image, as him doing comedy normally would.

Match Numero Dos: Zack Ryder & Eve Torres vs. Tyson Kidd & Nattie Neidhart

HART DYNASTY REUNION~! I miss that team.

Michael Cole tells us that, on WWE.com, we've seen Ryder trying to "get with" Eve Torres. I'm going to have to take your word on that one, Cole. Does anybody actually follow angles that are run on WWE.com?

Kidd and Ryder start, with Tyson putting the boots to the US Champ and hitting a back elbow. He follows with a buzzsaw-esque kick to the back of the head, but he runs into Ryder's knees in the corner. Zack comes off the ropes with a missile dropkick, prompting Tyson to make the tag. Eve comes in to face Nattie and powers her back into the corner before armdragging her down. Eve gets a snap mare and a big kick en route to her pop-and-lock standing moonsault. It gets two. Eve looks to follow up on her offense, but Nattie trips her up and drops her throat-first over the middle rope. The Diva of Destruction looks for a sharpshooter but gets kicked in the face, and here's a tag to Ryder. He runs wild on Tyson Kidd with clotheslines and a facebuster. Tyson briefly cuts him off with a kick, but Zack makes a comeback. Eve and Ryder set up for stereo kicks, with Eve kicking Nattie in the gut while Ryder gives Tyson the facewash in the corner. That leads into Zack's leg lariat, and he pins Kidd to win the match. Uneventful but inoffensive little bout designed to give Ryder some TV time.

Winners: Zack Ryder & Eve Torres

A WWE.com commercial tells us that, if we go there, they can give us everything we need to be a superfan. Does that mean they're finally selling the Vladimir costume that I've wanted them to put out for years?

During this commercial break, I feel like I should tell you that you can follow me on twitter here.

John Cena is out after the break. He's boo'ed pretty heavily. They should really market a John Cena baseball cap that reads "Rise Above Hat."

Cena acknowledges that Chicago hasn't always particularly cared for him. He puts over some of Chicago's WWE history, including it hosting three Wrestlemanias and being the cite of Eddy Guerrero's Hall of Fame induction. Trying to get Cena a positive reaction by trading off of Eddy's goodwill with the fans is pretty cheap. Cena says he wants to make a memorable moment just like the other memorable WWE moments Chicago has seen, and he calls out Kane.

Kane doesn't appear. Instead, the Miz does. Remember when they were trying to rebuild Miz into somebody that mattered and then flushed it all down the toilet with Sheamus squashing him in three minutes? Miz claims that 2011 was his year. He wants to face Cena tonight in order to "tie up loose ends" that were left as a result of people claiming Miz's Wrestlemania victory over Cena only occurred during the Rock. I figured Cena beating Miz like an absolute bitch for the rest of the year already tied up that loose end. Cena immediately accepts his challenge, though, and here we go.

Match Numero Tres: John Cena vs. Mike the Miz

Cena takes down Miz early but doesn't get any offense off of it. The two lock up, and Cena takes him down again, this time with a headlock. We've got dueling Cena chants, with the "Cena Sucks" side winning. Miz powers out of the headlock and bails when Cena shoves him into the ropes. Miz slides out of the ring, chides the people for chanting the wrong wrestler's name, and starts talking about how it doesn't matter how he beat Cena at Wrestlemania. It just matters that he did. In the middle of this, the referee counts him out of the ring and calls for the bell.

Winner: John Cena via count out

Just as Miz is about to hit his catchphrase, R-Truth's music hits, and here comes the man himself, fresh off his synthetic weed suspension. Truth throws Miz into the barricades, the announce table, and the ring steps before grabbing the mic himself. Truth says he could finish Miz off right now, but it wouldn't be any fun. He wants every Monday night to be like Christmas, so he'll take his time killing Miz.

This whole segment was really weird and disjointed. Cena was there to call out Kane but didn't get him. Miz cuts a confident promo about wanting to beat Cena but then his motivations do a complete 180 after thirty seconds in the ring. R-Truth comes out and acts like a complete heel but bludgeons Miz, who is also a heel. Truth's promo made NO sense, which is okay if he's a comedy guy but doesn't really work if he's serious, which appears to be the case. Plus this was all the latest in the long parade of segments that has made Miz look like an utter job guy, which is just weird because they keep sticking him in main event spots.

Match Numero Cuatro: Big Show vs. David Otunga - Show must have one arm tied behind his back.

I find the announcers' talk about how everybody would love to knock out an attorney really disturbing. Otunga runs early, but Big show clubs him with forearms and throws him over the top rope. Before long, Mark Henry's music hits, and he manages to get in a cheap shot on Show while the Giant's arm is still restrained. Cue Daniel Bryan, who distracts the World's Strongest Man long enough for show to finish untying his arm. Show goes after Henry but Mark backs away as David Otunga reenters the ring. Otunga eats a chokeslam, and that's the end of the segment. Unlike the prior match, this felt like a pretty seamless transition from the Show/Otunga mini-issue into something that furthered the larger Bryan/Show/Henry story.

Winner: Big Show via DQ

After a commercial, Ricardo Rodriguez wheels Alberto Del Rio out in a LEOPARD PRINT WHEELCHAIR. Ricardo is wearing a neck brace with his bow tie over it, and he has a pained expression on his face and a bit of scratchiness in his voice as he does ADR's intro. Lawler starts reeling off stats about the model number and value of Del Rio's chair as though it were one of his cars. So far, this segment has been FULL OF WIN. Alberto informs us that, in last week's main event, he tore his groin. The fans boo him, and here come the Bella twins. They fight over who gets to help ADR celebrate his recovery, so he gets annoyed and sends them away. Alberto makes a New Year's resolution to return more aggressive than ever before and to regain the WWE Championship. They really need to find a way to write him into the show despite his injuries, because gimpy Del Rio and Ricardo was absolute gold. Great subtle comedy.

Match Numero Cinco: CM Punk vs. Jack Swagger w/ Vickie Guerrero in part one of a gauntlet match

Punk's got his Chicago flag tights on this evening to really drive home the "hometown boy" factor. Punk gets Swagger in an armbar early, after which they switch to a test of strength. Swagger wins that in the early going, but Punk makes a comeback. That's cut off by a knee to the gut from Swagger, who grabs a headlock. Punk shoves him off and catches him with a leg lariat for an early two count. Knee strikes and leg kicks are next for Punk, but Swagger catches him with a gutbuster off of the ropes. The All American drops a series of elbows and legs for two. Swagger applies a waistlock, but Punk powers out and looks for a high cross off of the second rope. Swagger was supposed to catch him and hit another gutbuster, but they blew the spot and just wound up cuddling in mid-ring for a few seconds. Swagger eventually did herc him up for the gutbuster, which was followed by a series of knees to the stomach. Jack attemptst his Vader Bomb, but Punk catches him in GTS position in midair. Swagger slips out of it, but Punk catches him with a high kick seconds later and gets the duke.

Winner: CM Punk

Match Numero Seis: CM Punk vs. Dolph Ziggler in part two of a gauntlet match

Before Dolph gets into the ring, Swagger ambushes Punk from behind, clipping his knee. Of course, the WWE Champ signals that he's going to gut through the pain as we go to a commercial break. When we come back, Ziggler has Punk in a leglock. Punk kicks him off with his free leg adn goes for a slam, but his knee gives way and Dolph lands on top for two. Ziggler looks for a vertical suplex only for Punk to reverse it into a cradle for two. As the two wrestlers pop up, Ziggler clips the bad knee again and then connects with a standing dropkick for a nearfall. Mr. Ziggles applies a bow-and-arrow style submission, but Punk gets out of it with a series of headbutts. Dolph looks for another dropkick, but Punk blocks it and catapults his opponent into the turnbuckles. His time in control of the match is short-lived, though, as Ziggler regains the advantage and applies a half crab. Punk does a dramatic crawl to the ropes and eventually makes it there for the break. Ziggler charges at Punk but runs into his boot, at which point Punk starts making a comeback with MONGOLIAN CHOPS of all things. Punk gets in some kicks as well, and there's a scoop slam. The Second City Saint connects with his corner knee strike and sets up for the GTS, but Vickie Guerrero grabs Punk's leg as Jack Swagger distracts the referee. Ziggler hits his Zig Zag, but Punk kicks out at two.

Here comes Johnny Ace. He grabs the mic and starts yammering as Punk hits his high kick on Ziggler and covers him. Ace has the referee distracted, though, so nobody counts. Johnny gets on the apron and starts yelling at Punk, giving Dolph the opportunity to hit another Zig Zag for a three count. That earns Ziggler a WWE Title match on next week's show.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler

Kane is out after the break. This guy has always had a cool look, but his new gear is awful. It looks like something that came from the 1993 Harlem Heat hand-me-down bin. The big guy has a mic, and he rambles about the masked version of Kane being his "true essence." Before his speech goes anywhere, John Cena's music hits. Cena stands at the top of the ramp but, before he can run down and attack Kane, the Big Red Machine points at him, causing an explosion of fire to shoot up from the ramp. Cena is usually invincible, but the flames are enough to prevent even him from going any further. Kane says that he will tell Cena why he attacked him. Essentially, it's because Kane doesn't care for Cena's "Rise Above Hate" slogan. Hate is natural, Kane says. Everybody hates. (I thought it was "Everybody Poops.") The slogan is a "fraudulent myth," says the masked guy. Hate is what drives us. Kane wants Cena to embrace hate, as doing so will apparently help him "reach enlightenment." What? Kane says the last thing Cena hears in 2011 will be the fans chanting "Cena sucks." Then almost nobody chants it. Whoops. And why would that be the last thing Cena hears in 2011, anyway? Is he going to go deaf for the next week?

The show goes off the air with Cena pretending to look sad as he stares out on the crowd that is supposed to be lacing into him but is really just completely indifferent to him. Kane's explanation of his motivation made zero sense, and the end with the crowd not taking the bait to chant against Cena was just embarrassingly awful. The show was a pretty bland, thumbs in the middle effort until the closing segment, which dragged it down into "bad show" territory.

And, with all this talk about "hate," there was really only one thing I could think of the entire time the show last segment was on:

its Jericho. the new it begins promo is so for Jericho you could tell from the beggining to the end of that video that its for jericho. and the fact that it interupted punk means Jericho is coming for CM Punk. the plan is for a Jericho vs CM Punk WWE title match at WM28 from what i heard..

Posted By: Guest#1832 (Guest)  on December 26, 2011 at 11:27 PM

Of course the crowd didn't chant it then. The Chicago crowd is smart where they know that now with WWE trying to embrace off this Cena hate, that chanting Cena sucks just plays into it, and they, like most of us that really don't like him, want him to just go away.

I don't have a problem with Punk jobbing in his hometown of Chicago to Dolph Ziggler, because next week on Raw he's going to get his win back against Dolph Ziggler in a four star match, and EVERYBODY KNOWS that Ziggler and CM Punk are going to tear the house down. It's all good.

Apparently you were watching the show with the mute on. They clearly chanted "Cena Sucks" on several different occasions.

"And why would that be the last thing Cena hears in 2011, anyway? Is he going to go deaf for the next week?"....We get it, you're way too cool for the room. I guess everything being insanely literal is the way to watch PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING!

p.s. R Truth's promo was "serious"?? He's talking about Christmas, Little Jimmies, etc....is it really that easy for you to just make up how you think the show went?? You are awful.

Posted By: Erik.. (Guest)  on December 27, 2011 at 01:38 AM

I don't understand why everyone is trying to insist on these promos being for Jericho. Everything about them screams Undertaker. Especially, given the "prophetless" line and the line about the end coming. A Taker retirement match at this year's mania has been long rumored and I'd be pretty surprised to see this leading to anything else.

I really liked the Kane promo btw but I have to agree with you that the new ring gear is terrible.

Posted By: Guest#5824 (Guest)  on December 27, 2011 at 01:44 AM

Kane's promo was good. Of course the fans won't rip Cena a new one, because he is still a face, but this is the beginning of his heel turn. The WWE just has to make him become hated. It can't all happen at once. Heels don't make faces become heels through taunting.

Posted By: Andis (Guest)  on December 27, 2011 at 01:46 AM

I believe Kane's promo is the starting point to turning Cena heel.

Posted By: save_us.djs (Guest)  on December 27, 2011 at 02:03 AM

I actually liked the Kane promo. The idea makes sense. Kane is consumed by hate, empowered by it, etc, so for him to see Cena's shirt and cheesy preaching it would get to him and he wants to send a message. For a deranged "monster" it works, it fits with his past characters, and gives him a natural antithesis to Cena's bland good guy deal ( and I don't hate Cena, just not a big fan of his character, his work I'm fine with ). The only big issues I felt ( and I liked most of Kanes delivery too. Spot on ) was that the crowd didn't react against Cena ( if they DID, the segment then comes off really strong ) and "Cena sucks" is pretty middle-schoolish, a simpler " We Hate Cena " would have been more poignant and accurate to the storyline. Maybe I was just expecting something awful as his rationale, but I felt it worked.

Im going to have to give TheMiz some credit here. He went from being the Joke that "reality stars" are to a legit wrestler. I have notice how hard he has worked with in in-ring performance and his mic skills. His future still looks bright but I still believe he was pushed a little too hard a little too soon.

Return of Kane is an excellent angle but dont know if I agree with him being just another one of the guys that feud with Cena.

Pretty damn good Raw tonight, and I, unlike many, thought that Kane's promo was one of the best that he's delivered ever. I don't like John Cena, as a wrestler, but I am really curious to see him as a heel.

Posted By: Guest#9952 (Guest)  on December 27, 2011 at 12:31 AM

This. I heard the whole crowd yelling either "Let's go, Cena!" or "Cena Sucks!" In fact, Cena Sucks was louder.

You probably thought they were yelling CM Punk. That's a common mistake. Even Punk made a joke about it once.

So... I guess gonna pull the trigger on Ziggler. Jericho appears and costs Punk the title next week. You heard it here first.

That's not the same person who has been Kane the last few years. The reason he's wearing a mask is so we cannot tell it's a different person. Plus he's a few inches shorter.

I hope wwe is better in 2012, this is getting awful.

Usually I agree with the reviewers, but I think this was a decent show. Punk suprisingly losing (though it made complete sense) is the difference between Punk and Cena. Cena still would have won, defeated Mark Henry and tossed around Johnny Ace.

I think you are completly wrong on Kane's promo. I thought it was great and made a lot of sense. If this is the beginning of Cena doubting the fans, I thought it was done well by both Kane and Cena. They did get dueling chants near the end, so there's that. I like this storyline.

what a load of crap. they bring back old style Kane and have him TALK???? that's when I turned it off. A proper old school Kane does not ramble, explain himself, or even utter a word. He appears unexpectedly, and destroys random people for whatever reason. This stinks of Vince. Nice way to fuck things up.

I love how a lot of the crowd weren't even bothered to chant Cena sucks by the end. I think a lot of them are aware of what WWE is trying to do and aren't falling for it.

The show itself was pretty bad to be honest.

wow, you'd think because they're in Chicago people who pile on the Cena hate, but i guess they're smart enough to know when they're being goaded to do something.

Should it be #1 HEEL or Pound HERE?

"Trying to get Cena a positive reaction by trading off of Eddy's goodwill with the fans is pretty cheap."

You don't understand how wrestling or reality work, do you? That's certainly not what they were doing but apparently recognizing reality implies an agenda as far as some people are concerned.

They planned this segment for Chicago as that is where Cena gets the most heat. Really odd the "Let's go Cena" chants were just as loud as the sucks chants. Weak ending promo. Jericho return to confront Punk as RAW closes next week. Should be good.

The closing segment was almost painful to watch. Looks like another shit gimmick for Kane. And here I thought he be tearing through the entire roster for most of 2012.

Yes! Kane comes back with his mask, kicks ass, and gives off an aura of coolness, so let's kill it with a promo so boring that Triple H is jealous.

Kane should have gone out, said "I hate Cena and I hate the fans. Cena, you're only on my good side if you hate the fans too," and then left or gone after Cena and kicked his ass. That's a lot better than the promo Kane did give, which seemed like a mix of an Undertakter and Ultimate Warrior promo.

Please don't start this nonsense again! It is the same person who has ALWAYS been Kane - Glen Jacobs. Yes, there have occasionally been fake Kane's(Luke Gallows), but Glen Jacobs has been Kane his entire WWE run. He is Kane now.

Uneventful but inoffensive little bout designed to give Ryder some TV time.

Um, every match and segment is designed to give someone time. Ryder is the U.S Champion. Of course he is going to get some tv time.

You do understand it's an arena of 15,000 people right? They panned the crowd and did have some people chanting (watch closely asshole) and some who weren't. Again, 15,000 people. You can't see em all.

I have to respectfully disagree with you here due to the fact that Kane's voice was the same it always has been, which is Glen Jacobs. His motions---the way he swings his arms down for the pyros in the ring posts to go off, his punches to Cena last week---all of that, it certainly looked to me, was Glen Jacobs. Even his goatee is the same as what it was when he was masked before.

As for the mask, it simply was a return to his old form, his old, more "monster" persona. Much like when 'Taker went back to the "Phenom" persona from his "Biker/American Bad-Ass" persona. As for Kane being a few inches shorter, at his height, I have to admit, I wouldn't tell the difference. You must have a more keen eye than I do on that.

The execution is still sluggish at best. I do like the ideas and direction that we have going here. Interesting way to get Cena heel. WWE's problem has been as of late blowing their load way too early. They get some steam going and then "boom", they blow it. They never milk their story lines like they did back even in the early 2000's. I think they need to remember it's called episodic booking. Make the people come back. TNA lacks that in big droves. Much of the time it's hard to come after a while and wonder what the hell is going on. TNA's biggest problem besides it's management and business practices is the fact they hate money. Always giving away title matches with no pay off. The ppv's much of the time are like longer versions of Impact. Instead of building on things like their knock out's div or the x div, We see much of the same thing over and over with times of TNA pushing a new person as face of the company before it's back to business as usual. Roode I don't think will be holding that title at end of Genesis, history just has a funny way of repeating itself like coked up stuttering Gary Busey. TNA and WWE fans believe everything is fine as it is when it isn't and both sides having too many trolls.

After Punk wins the match next week Jericho will return to confront Punk. For those of you have paid attention the past couple of months Jericho has been bashing Punk for using certain moves amongst other things. It makes sense for Jericho to start a program with Punk.
Plus just after Jericho left the last time he had been saying how much it upset him that a great talent like CM Punk was being under used and not given the spotlight he should get. So I knew how much Jericho respected Punk. Then for him to start bashing him recently was weird until he said he was done with wrestling. It just starts to make sense that he returns to work with Punk. Which I think could really be great matches.

"Kane is out after the break. This guy has always had a cool look, but his new gear is awful. It looks like something that came from the 1993 Harlem Heat hand-me-down bin."

My guess would be that they found while rummaging through the old bins left after the WCW purchase searching for shit to donate to charity and it still had a "Kane" tag attached, so somebody thought it was his.
