"Let's Rock…"
My viewing started late, so I missed the opening video. I assume it focused on the top matches and was the usual good stuff we've come to expect from TNA.
X-Division Championship Match
Austin Aries (champion) vs. Zema Ion vs. Kid Kash vs. Jesse Sorensen
Even when simply entering the ring, Aries comes off as the biggest star in the match. The three challengers do battle in the ring, and it will be tough cover the early action. We're down to Sorensen and Ion, and Sorensen has the early advantage. Ion nails an elbow out of the corner, but Sorensen catches him in a Northern Lights Suplex for 2. Ion puts the Texas footballer down, and Aries takes advantage. All four back in, and they're taking turns rolling Aries up. Kash and Aries are down on the floor, and Ion puts Sorensen down hard. Ion is up top, but Kash cuts him off and we get a Tower Of Doom! Aries tries to steal a cover, but is unsuccessful. Aries & Ion are in, and the action is literally non-stop!
Aries has Ion down, and goes up top himself. Ion sends him to the floor, and he lands on Kash. Going to the top isn't a great idea in this match! ION FLIES! Twisting Corkscrew Plancha takes out Aries & Kash. Sorensen follows up with a dive of his own! And the crowd is actually into it! Sorensen goes for the pin on Aires and gets two. Chop exchange for Kash & Ion—Whoooo! Ion hits the corner hard as Aries continues to stomp on Sorensen in the opposite corner.
Kash up top, and goes for a Superplex. Sorensen sends Aries into the corner, and Kash goes down as well. Ion hits Kash with a 450, and Kash is eliminated! Kid Kash is eliminated at 6:21 (Ion pin)
Aries hits a 450 of his own, but Sorensen kicks out. Ion & Aries exchange chop snow, but Ion turns to forearms. Aries puts Ion down and readies for the Pendulum elbow, but Sorensen takes him down with a cross-body for two. Sorensen & ion take turns trying to pin Aries, and neither is successful. Sorensen gets a small package on Ion, and he's out! Zema ion is eliminated at 8:21 (Sorensen pin)
Ion argues with the ref as Sorensen has Aries pinned. Sorensen hits the Game Changer, but the ref is still out of position with Ion. Sorensen is actually getting some crowd support—some. Ion is still on the outside, looking for revenge Sorensen tries to go up to, but Aries cuts him off and tries to Suplex him in. Sorensen falls on top, and gets two. Sorensen kills Aries with a boot, and the champ is an expert at selling. Sorensen goes up, but Ion grabs his leg and crotches him on the turnbuckle. Aries with the corner dropkick, and nails an Avalanche Brian Buster! It's over. Jesse Sorensen is eliminated at 10:59 (Aries pin)
Winner and STILL X-Division Champion: Austin Aries in 10:59 ***
We get a series of replays, including each fall in the match. That was a good match to showcase the division, and the right man went over.
Borash Backstage
JB is joined by Terrence & Terrell. They're 16 and their dad is humble &intelligent. JB wants to know why they're rollin' with Pope. Pope says he wants to slap JB—which is good, because Devon's kids can't talk. Pope says tonight is a day of reckoning for Devon. Pope says they won't have to "deal with his black behind" again. Ugh.
We get a video package for Pope-Devon.
Devon vs. "The Pope" D'Angelo Dinero
Pope is out first, with Devon's kids. Devon is out and immediately goes after Pope. Devon pounds on Pope in the corner, and the crowd is solidly behind Devon. Devon with a spinning uppercut, and a clothesline sends Pope to the floor. It's all Devon to start.
Devon follows outside, and uses the steps on Pope. Back in the ring, and Pope begs off. Devon stares a hole through his opponent, and continues the onslaught with a Thesz press. Devon with a diving headbutt to the shoulder, and Devon goes up. Pope starts to get up, and pushes the ref into the topes, which crotches Devon on the top. Pope up top with a short dropkick on Devon. Pope pounds on Devon near the corner. Devon is down and Pope Tebow's in the center of the ring! Pope has Devon draped over the top rope, and continues to kick his opponent. Clothesline on the apron follows, and the crowd starts a "Let's Go Devon" chant. Pope dropkicks Devon on the floor, and whips him into the post. Remember when that earned a DQ? Pope now chokes Devon on the rail; then nails a double axe-handle in front of Rick Ross (The Boss). Back in, and Pope works a chinlock on Devon. Pope goes for the Garvin Stomp, which Tenay accurately calls. Atta boy, Mike! Pope (sorta) posts Devon under the bottom rope, and has slowed things down—not in a bad way. He's working the methodic heel offense, and it's working. Devon's kids look on, possibly showing concern for their dad? Taz acknowledges it, so it must be true. Pope calls for the sons to get in the ring, and they slowly oblige.
Crowd chants "You Suck" at Pope, as he wants the kids to stomp on daddy. They check on Devon instead, and Pope isn't happy. He attacks on son, and tosses him out of the ring. The other son, gets slapped down by Pope, and Devon is up. Devon Hulks up, and goes to work on Pope. Strange backdrop-breaker type move puts pope down, followed by a jumping clothesline. Devon with a powerslam for two. Devon has Pope up, but Pope slides off and goes with an uppercut. Devon with a shoulderblock for two. Devon charges the corner, but Pope moves. Neckbreaker off of the ropes by Pope, and he gloats to the crowd. Pope taunts Devon's kids next, and misses a charge of his own. Devon lifts Pope into an inverted DDT, and scores the pin. Winner: Devon (lifted inverted DDT, 10:28, **1/2)
Devon and the kids hug it out after the match. The match itself was fine, I could have lived without the family drama. Hopefully this feud is over.
Borash Backstage
Borash talks about Hardy & Sting, but is interrupted Velvet Sky. She wants to Sting, and asks to be the new Knockouts Vice President. She talks about Madison, Gail & Karen, and keeps interrupting Sting. She has a brilliant plan to keep Madison occupied, and whispers it in Sting's ear. Sting likes the idea, but says they couldn't pull it off in this short time. But Velvet already had "it" built, and Sting says okay. It appears like the Knockouts will be a little overbooked tonight.
JB goes back to the topic at hand, which I give them credit for. He says Sting gave Hardy this chance, and Sting points out that Hardy earned it (well, he did!). Sting seems to think Hardy has this one in the bag. It's Showtime!
Gunner vs. Rob Van Dam
Ric Flair is out with Gunner, Rob Van Dam is out with pyro. Not sure why Flair was banned on Thursday, but is here today. The crowd chants "RVD" and both men tie-up to start. RVD gets a headlock but Gunner takes him down. RVD with the reversal as we're getting amateur on the mat! (In a good way.) Gunner charges but RVD flips out of the corner, and we have a stand-off. Gunner takes the advantage and unloads on RVD with right hands. RVD flips over the backdrop and gets two with a crucifix. We have another stand off two minutes in. RVD levels Gunner with a kick that sends him to the outside, where he gets a pep-talk from the "dirtiest player in the game." Gunner back in, and kicks RVD to start. He has him cornered and throws a few shoulders. Gunner drops RVD with a clothesline, and gets two.
Gunner stomps RVD, and gets two with a side slam. Van Dam fights back, but Gunner maintains control and sends him outside. Gunner heads out after him, and talks some trash as he sends him into the guard rail. Gunner starts to remove the floor pads but the referee will have none of that. Van Dam takes this opportunity for a dropkick, followed by a slingshot legdrop on the apron. RVD goes up top, but Gunner crotches him (our third of the night in three matches). Gunner sets RV Dup for a Superplex, but RVD fights it off and sends Gunner town. RVD lands a high cross body for two. RVD with a kick off of the opposite turnbuckle, and follows up with some Rolling Thunder for two. Gunner back outside, and Flair pulls Gunner out of the way of a dive as Gunner lands on the exposed concrete. Flair distracts the ref as Gunner nails a DDT on the floor. Van Dam appears to be out on his feet as Gunner rolls him in. that's enough to get the pin (as it should be). Winner: Gunner (DDT to the floor), 6:43, **3/4
Good match, good way to use Flair in assisting Gunner. Agents and EMTs are out and RVD is doing a stretcher job for Gunner. Looks like Van Dam is getting some time off. This is working for Gunner, but eventually he has to add to his routine. They'd eventually run out of roster members to take out!
Borash Backstage
JB says we'll hope for an update on RVD, then welcomes Jeff Hardy in to talk about his match tonight. Hardy paints his face far in advance of his matches. He doesn't brag and is modest. He's talking in in song. He calls for his creatures to mount-up, they have a world title to win.
We get a video package for the Knockouts Championship Match.
Knockouts Championship Match
Gail Kim (champion) vs. Mickie James
We get a tale of the tape, which is basically a run-down of the storyline. "Velvet's Touch" is a pink & white cage for Madison to dance stand scream in. Mickie is out first, looking fine as usual. Gail is out with Madison, who isn't appropriately dressed to dance in that cage. Thursday's thong would have been more appropriate. Gail holds up both belts as Madison isn't happy about this cage she is seeing. Oh c'mon Madison, it can't be the first time...
Her reluctance brings Velvet Sky out to ringside, to a nice pop. And she's popping alright, right out of that top. Velvet tries to open the cage door, but is having a hard time with it. I wonder if Sabin has experienced that same issue with her. Velvet slams Madison into the cage, and she's locked up now. The cage is lifted, and Taz knows that Madison is afraid of heights.
We're underway as Gail immediately has Mickie stuck in the corner. She follows up with a diving clothesline, followed up by a knee to the back. Mickie with a quick roll-up, but gets two. Mickie on the offensive and "nails" a seated dropkick (she missed). Gail sends Mickie into the corner, but Mickie is out with an elbow. Mickie is on the apron, and Gail connects with a knee, bringing Mickie in face first. Gail gets two.
Mickie tries to comeback, but Gail thwarts each attempt. Gail with some knees in the corner; then sends Mickie to the opposite corner, followed up by a shoulder to the gut. Gail kicks Mickie in the back repeatedly, as we get a shot from around Madison's cage. She's still not dancing. Mickie turns things around with a dropkick, but Gail is quick to regain the advantage. Velvet is still on the outside, and Taz loves when she claps. Mickie gets an arm & head drag, followed up by forearms and clotheslines. The crowd is pumped for Mickie, who gets caught in an Octopus. Mickie drags her into the corner, then drops her to the mat for two.
Mickie sets Gail up for the DDT, but Gail pushes her off. Mickie sends Gail out, right in front of Velvet. Gail drags Mickie out, and gets kicked in the face. Mickie follows up with a ‘rana off of the apron. Mickie with the Thesz press off of the top, and it gets two. Madison drops something down to Gail, and it bounces to the floor. Madison sends a second set down, but Mickie gets them and nails Gail! Ref sees that, and calls for the DQ. Winner and STILL Knockouts Champion: Gail Kim (by disqualification), 6:27, ***
Screwjob finish to what was a good match. Velvet is hot as ever, but what else can she do? We'll see as she gets the expected feud with Gail.
Borash Backstage
Bully Ray says he was nervous for one second, but he's the biggest, baddest & meanest. He does what he wants to do, and shouldn't be nervous. He points out that he's the king of hardcore matches, drops Foley & funk as guys who bow down to him. Okay. He claims that Abyss is going to lose, and is coming back to Immortal. He lists himself, Bischoff, Steiner & Gunner, so at least we know who is still in Immortal.
We get the Monster's Ball video package.
Monster's Ball
Bully Ray vs. Abyss If Abyss loses, he must rejoin Immortal
Ray out first, and he threatens So Cal Val, pissing off both Jay Lethal AND Sonjay Dutt. Abyss is out, and gets some pyro. We have plenty of weapons at ringside, as Ray seems at least a little bit nervous. They should have left Velvet's cage out there for this one. Bully Ray to the outside as he messes with the mind of Abyss. Bully Ray back in with a chair, wants to know what Abyss is going to do. Abyss goes outside and gets his own chair, of course! Chair fight, bitches! Abyss no sells the chair shop, clotheslines Abyss down, and follows with a chokeslam. Bully Ray is up, and sends Abyss down, who is also up. Bully Ray wraps the chain around his hand, and Abyss swats at it with a chair. He cracks Ray across the back.
Abyss out, and sends plenty of weapons into the ring. Bully Ray takes over with the chain, then levels Abyss with a trash can. It does nothing, and Abyss levels Ray. Ray takes him down with a clothesline, follows up with an elbow for two. Abyss reintroduces Janice to TNA to balance out Ray's kendo stick. Ray says he's done, and walks up the stage.
Abyss gives chase, and we're headed backstage!
Nope, we're headed back to the ring, now. They trade right hands down the ramp, and Ray uses a pie pan on Abyss. Abyss sent into the barbed wire board shoulder & arm first. Ray continues the barbed wire attack, but Abyss slams Ray into the steps. Ray back in, and Abyss goes under the ring for the thumbtacks! Cheese grater to the nuts (Abyss stole that spot from Bully back in ECW, by the way). Back to the thumbtacks, and Abyss spreads them around the ring. Ray sells the nut-shot, and GOOZLE! Bully Ray with a low blow to escape the goozle, and goes outside to get a table (DEVON! Get...oh, nevermind).
Table is set-up, and Abyss chokeslams Ray through it! He only gets two, and Ray screams in pain. Great camera shot of Janice—that thing looks dangerous. Big barbed wire board sent in by Abyss, as we have two in there now. Bullly Ray has a table leg, but Abyss swats it away. Urinage by Ray onto the barbed wire gets two. Ray stomps Abyss, the slams the other barbed wire board on top of him. Ray up top, SENTON ONTO THE BOARD, ON TOP OF ABYSS, WHO IS ON TOP OF BARDED WIRE. Abyss, of course, kicks out. Bully Ray moves the board, grabbing the bad side. He has Janice...but Abyss with a GOOZLE! chokeslam onto the tacks gets two!
Crowd chants "This Is Awesome!" It's not awesome, but it is good. Ray with a trash can lid to the head of Abyss. Abyss's arms are bleeding pretty bad, and Ray goes to work on him with a Kendo stick. He's targeting the arm—veteran move. Taz eloquently explains how the bamboo splits and the shots hurt more & more—nice touch. Bully Ray charges, Abyss catches him—BLACKHOLE SLAM ON THE BARBED WIRE BOARD! And it's over. Winner: Abyss (Blackhole Slam to the barbed wire board), 15:02, ***3/4
Note: I upped the rating of this match after further review. This was an entertaining hardcore match in 2012, which is hard to pull off.
It's hard to do a really good hardcore match in 2012, but they pulled of a few good spots and got the match over with me. We get replays of the match—it was indeed brutal, and Abyss does indeed avoid rejoining Immortal.
Borash Backstage
JB talks to Crimson & Matt Morgan. Crimson is sorry boys, since he destroys lives. Dude, calm down. It's just a wrestling match. Morgan reminds us that they're the champs, and puts Crimson's catchphrase over. Then he puts over his size, and makes me think he needs a push. Big man who can talk. Vince released him?
World Tag Team Championship
Matt Morgan & Crimson (champions) vs. Samoa Joe & Magnus
Have I mentioned that Christy Hemme looks great tonight? Joe & Magnus are out first, and appear to be all business. We get highlights of Thursday's final match, which is sadly the only time we'll see AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels or Kazarian tonight. The champs are out next.
Morgan and Joe start, and Joe makes a few unsuccessful shoulder attempts. He does eventually put the big man down. Magnus & Crimson in, and Crimson sends the Brit down. Knees to the head by Crimson, and a neck breaker gets two. Morgan in, and hits the repeated elbows in the corner to Magnus. Crimson with an overhead exploder, gets two. Joe tagged in, and catches Crimson in the corner. STO! HASHIMOTO!
Joe has the advantage, and unloads on Crimson with rights. Tag to Magnus, who gets two. Chinlock applied now. Flying elbow by Magnus, and Joe is back in. Slap/kick combo, then the knee drop. VINTAGE JOE! That gets two, and Joe sends Crimson down with an elbow. Quick tag to Magnus, and the Crimson kicks him in the face. Clothesline by Magnus gets two, and Crimson is YOUR face in peril.
Split screen backstage as Bully Ray is attacking Abyss. Joe in control in the actual match, which is in the smaller screen. We're back to proper action, now. Joe plants his boot on Crimson in the corner, and SOMEONE'S GOT A DIRTY FACE! (credit: Dave Prazak). Crimson cuts him off with a spear, and both men are down.
Bully Ray is tending worldwide on Twitter, according to Taz. Ugh.
Matt Morgan tagged in, takes Magnus down. Fall-away slam, Joe in and he goes down as well. Big Splash in the corner for Magnus, and Morgan connects with the Hellevator. Joe breaks up the count, and they send Crimson outside. Matt Morgan is isolated, and we get some good teamwork. Top rope elbow gets two for Magnus, but Crimson breaks it up. Crimson & Magnus are outside, Joe with a heat-seeking missile to Crimson! Magnus moved—chemistry?
Crimson & Matt Morgan pick up the win as I had to fix the coverage—thus I didn't catch the time.
Winners & still World Tag Team Champions: Matt Morgan & Crimson, ***
Borash Backstage
JB joined by James Storm, who says that Kurt Angle is sucking, but he will be swallowing—his foot. He leaves, but comes back for the catchphrase, and the crowd eats it up.
We get a video package for Storm-Angle. We still have 1:10:00 left, so these two matches should get some good time.
Kurt Angle vs. James Storm
Kurt Angle is out first. James Storm is out, and is over like rover. Seriously, he's Jesus Tim Tebow to these people. Robert Irvine from Dinner Impossible is in the house! He gets to bang Gail, you know. Kurt Angle dictates things to start, like a true veteran. He must hang out with Bully Ray. Hip toss by Storm, and Angle avoids the early Last Call Superkick. Tenay thankfully references their world title match with that one.
Kurt Angle back in, and a kick to the gut gives him the advantage. Irish whip, Angle telegraphs the backdrop and Storm hits a Triple H knee instead. Angle avoids the Last Call Superkick once again, and uses all of the count. Storm actually send Angle outside this time, and dives over the top after the Olympic Hero. Storm is firmly in control. With right hands on the outside. Storm picked up a few pounds since the Impact Wrestling tapings—it was the holiday trimmings!
Storm gets the ten punch count in the corner, delivering the catchphrase between 9 & 10. Release belly-to-belly from Kurt, followed up by right hands in the corner. Kurt with multiple elbows to Storm on the apron, and we head back in. Snap suplex gets two, and Taz shares a gym with Angle. But they don't train together. No kidding. Kurt controls Storm in the center of the ring, cutting off the oxygen supply. Where's Gorilla Monsoon when you need him! Storm slowly works his way up, breaking away until Kurt takes him back down for a one count. Angle stalks and kicks Storm down. Random leg drop gets two. Kurt reapplies the forearm across Angle's face as Taz does a great job selling the effects of the move. Storm kicks to avoid a clothesline and connects with a Side Russian Leg Sweep. Both men down as the ref counts, and we're up at seven. Trading right hands in the center of the ring, clothesline by Storm, Angle reverses but Storm sends him down with a forearm. They trade reversals, Storm gets a back stabber for two. Angle reverses the whip...rolling Germans! Kurt Angle connects with the top rope moonsault, and gets two.
Ankle Lock applied, and Jack Swagger is pissed! Storm reverses and hits a DDT for two. Kurt avoids the Last call, and Storm avoids the Angle slam. Kick by Storm sends Angle down, but Kurt us back with an elbow. Angle Slam gets two. Storm reverses fortune into a cutter, for two. Storm is blown up, slow to capitalize. Storm up top, Angle pops up goes up top, but Storm sends him down. Macho Man elbow gets two for the Tennessee Cowboy. Storm gets the crowd behind him, and Angle uses Earl Hebner to avoid the Last Call, followed by a low blow, followed up by a head kick. That gets three! Winner: Kurt Angle (head kick), 14:25, ***
Seems like they were just getting into a high gear when we hit the finish. Still a good match, but it falls short of their contest at Final Resolution.
Bully Ray Backstage
Disembodied voice asks where abyss is, and Bully Ray plays dumb.
Video package for the main event airs.
Borash Backstage
JB talks to Robert Bobby Roode, and the people are disgusting to him. He's sick of the people chanting for Hardy, so they, of course, start chanting for Hardy. He calls Hardy an embarrassment to wrestling, TNA and to Roode. Well, the first two are indisputable. Roode says you get no second chances, rewriting history. He is the "It Factor" of pro wrestling, the world heavyweight champion, and the most selfish man in the world. He'll do whatever it takes to remain the champ. WHATEVER IT TAKES! Foreshadowing an intentional DQ?
World Heavyweight Championship
Bobby Roode (champion) vs. Jeff Hardy
Jeff Hardy out first, shakes hands with Rick Ross. Don't do it Russo! We get super special ring announcing from Jeremy Borash, freeing up Christy Hemme to watch the main event from my lap. Brian Hebner is YOUR referee. Hardy gets some boos, buy mostly cheers. Nothing but boos for Roode. Hebner displays the gold and it looks like we're getting a long main event tonight! Do the right thing, TNA!
Roode backs Hardy in the corner to start, and we get a relatively clean break. "Let's Go Hardy" chant by the Impact Zone, and they are abuzz for this match. Roode with the side headlock, Hardy sends him to the ropes, Roode puts Hardy down with a shoulder block. Roode gloats and Hardy slowly gets back to his feet. Roode works the left arm (there's a funny story about Hardy working the right arm in his first WWF match in their book). Hardy takes over with an armdrag, locking in an arm bar. (ARM BAR!) Roode quickly regains the advantage, but Hardy comes right back himself. Irish whip reversed, and Hardy takes Roode down with an inverted Atomic Drop, drop kick low, and Hardy gets two. Roode looks heavily bruised, but it's really just Hardy's paint. Hardy & Roode fight on the outside, and Bobby eats some stairs! Hardy moves the stairs, and launches himself off of the steps with a side leg kick on Roode against the guard rail! That gets a replay as Hardy gets two in the ring.
Hardy is limping, possibly legit. Hardy up top, but Roode crotches him on the post. Roode pulls him down into the Tree of Woe, stomping away at the challenger. Hebner pushes Roode away, and Hardy falls to the mat. Taz says Hardy's ankle was tweaked in the Tree—nice save. Roode gets two, and Tenay discusses the leg as well. Roode powers Hardy into the corner, and gets two. Suplex by Roode, and he lands a knee drop from the middle rope for two. Roode with a chinlock, as the crowd starts to chant for Hardy again. Hardy gets up, but a handful of hair sends him back down. Roode sends Hardy to the outside, and he slides out—looked painful! Hardy is making Roode look like a million bucks here.
Roode continues to unload on Hardy, getting some great "Bobby Sucks" heat from the crowd. Back in the ring, and Roode gets two as we hit the 10-minute mark. Chinlock is applied again, and Hardy tries to get to the ropes. Roode locks in the crossface in the center of the ring. No one is really buying the possibility of a finish here, but Hardy is selling like crazy. Hardy gets to the ropes for a break. Roode uses the full five count ("I HAVE ‘TIL FIVE, REFEREE!"). Roode slams Hardy down, then goes back up. Roode mocks Hardy's dance on the middle turnbuckle, and pays for it. Hardy's boot meets Roode's face, and both men are down at the 13-minute mark.
Roode up first, but Hardy takes the advantage, taking the champ down with a forearm, clothesline & elbow. Roode goes over on the backdrop, and Hardy kicks him down once again. Roode catches Hardy in the corner, but Hardy slides out and hits the Side Russian Leg Sweep—unique roll up for two. Hardy reverses a spine buster, but Roode connects on the second try. It's not called a Double R Spine buster by Tenay.
Roode on the offensive at the 15-minte mark, apparently setting up a superplex. Hardy blocks, and sends Roode down hard. Roode awkwardly landed on the shoulder, but still avoids the Swanton. Hardy landed on his feet. Roode decides to take a hike, and Hardy gives chase. Hardy sends Roode down to the ramp, and drags him back into the ring. Roode uses the ref as a diversion, catches Hardy on the way in, Fisherman's Suplex gets two. Roode slowly pulls Hardy up, but Hardy connects with the Stunner of Fate. Roode back to his feet—Whisper In The Wind gets two! Crowd is once again chanting for Hardy.
Roode avoids the second Twist of Fate, and decides to take a hike once again. This time he has the belt with him. Homey Hardy don't play dat, gives chase, and they're back in the ring. Hebner takes the belt out, and Roode rolls Hardy up for two—Hebner sees the feet on the ropes and stops the count! Hardy with a roll-up of his own for two. Roode backs off, and kicks the referee low! Twist of Fate by Hardy, but Hebner calls for the bell! Winner: Jeff Hardy, disqualification, 19:44, ***
Hardy isn't satisfied, and connects with the Swanton on Roode! Hardy celebrates with the title as Tenay says Hardy should have won. Hardy throws the belt down onto Roode and slowly leaves as frustratingly he eyeballs Roode. Tenay says "Damn it, Bobby did it again!" and Taz defends his actions. Tenay calls Hardy the true champ as Roode hugs the belt.
Against all Odds promo takes us out!
DeMarco's Knee Jerk Reaction: Solid PPV effort from TNA, that will likely be unfairly panned by many. The wrestling was good, even if some of the booking was questionable. I called the finish of the main event in multiple places, simply because the booking made sense. Against All Odds might feature a few rematches (Roode-Hardy, Storm-Angle, Crimson/Morgan-Joe/Magnus), but those make sense and will be good outings. TNA is slowly turning things around, let's hope they remain patient.

De Marco (as if that's your real name), you are the best TNA recapper yet. No, I am not blowing smoke up your ass. You kept it fresh and didn't make it seem like they are bush league. At least there was no bias on your part.

I HATED THIS PPV. i want my money back. a DQ in the main event. BS!

All pretty much 3 star matches no GREAT ones no bad ones. So it was solid.
The biggest thing that stood out to me was how dead the crowd was for the Storm/Angle match. That right there proves that WRESTLING really doesnt matter. if it is slow and ground and pound people dont give a shit. Very good technical match zero interest from the crowd until they started getting a few pinfall attempts.
also there are too many low blows now. Last two matches had them both directly leading to pins. I know heels are heels but having them both do low blows?
The Abyss was was cool as it was with a cheese grater in a hardcore match and Bubba got to scream "ohhh my balls' for the rest of the night. Plus Bubba got his own low blow in there.
I also think Pope kicked one of Devons kids in the nuts too, not sure if it was the nuts or the stomach, but it looked like a nutjob.
RVD getting hurt makes it really look like he might be heading to WWE, but giving him time off with just 3 months left on his contract doesnt make too much sense. I really cant see him going there unless he has quit smoking dope which I doubt. But at 41 he fits right in with the new WWE approach of bringing back all the old guys (increasingly ones who have been with TNA) to help boost their failing company.
All in all it was a better than average show. Nothing really stuck out good or bad. Except as cited the alarming number of crotch shots and getting straddled on the ropes or corner turnbuckles.

Not bad considering...everyone was tired after watching Tebow beat the Steelers.
Posted By: Taco Bell (Guest) on January 08, 2012 at 11:36 PM
I was really hoping that Magnus/Joe would win the tag titles, or at least TNA will extend this feud. Joe needs to be back int he mix and Magnus has been sorely underused. I like that they have put Crimson in a tag team, but please....let these four build this into a main event type feud so you have more championship contenders intead of the Hardys and Angles of the world.
Please remember...Eric Bischoff FIRED Steve Austin...and look what happened to him. I'm definitely not saying that Matt Morgan is the next Stone Cold, but he definitely has the skills to main event as a champion.
Go Texans!!! I'll be wearing my Battle Red Jersey next week.....

Guaranteed overall better matches than what crap you'll see at the end of the month when Orton or Sheamus ends up the Rumble winner. I mean what are they going to put up against Gail/Mickie, Alicia and Beth? Yeah that'll hit 1/4 star if they are lucky. Ziggler/Punk will DEFINITELY involve at least two different people in the match constantly (Vickie and Ace) and what next, Show/Bryan rematch? YAWN.
Very good PPV, a bit of a step down from Final Resolution and I didn't enjoy the two DQ's at all but overall, very good.

Thank God Mickie James didn't win the TNA Knockouts Championship.
Posted By: TK03000 (Guest) on January 09, 2012 at 12:20 AM
Please tell me your rating scale is based on ten. The knockouts match was a botchfest and the majority of these finishes garnered two stars or less in the KO's, MB and Me matches. Storm and Angle was just dead due to Kurt being cautious. Holy shit are we lowering our standards. No wonder Dixie won't fire anyone. Please watch this again and say you would stand by these ratings.

Really solid show. I wish that Angle had lost, and they would go ahead and pull the trigger on Storm/Roode, but I guess they want to drag Bobby's reign out a bit more. So you ended up with two uneven main events.
Still the action was solid and the story made sense. I'd rather Roode went over clean, but I guess it's hard to make the case for a rematch that way.

So the only way to defeat an old guy in TNA is... with an even older guy? #RVD
Posted By: Guest#3417 (Guest) on January 09, 2012 at 01:27 AM
So....everyone blasts TNA for having the main event end in a DQ when WWE has done that on SEVERAL PPVs over the years? Anyone remember No Way Out 2008? What about The Bash 2009? Judgment Day 2003? I know there's others that slip past my memory. You can't have a clear cut finish in EVERY main event. They're called feuds. Had Roode pinned Hardy even with cheating it doesn't make the rematch at AAO as likely to do good numbers. The DQ ensures that if they do a rematch next month, people will surely tune in to see if Roode gets hism come uppence. Although, this IS TNA so we'll probably get the rematch on Impact...
Posted By: WPK (Guest) on January 09, 2012 at 01:30 AM
The Mickie James/Gail Kim match was pretty much a total copy of 2010's Final Resolution X-Division Match with Robbie E & Jay Lethal and Cookie "suspended in the shark cage". Like exactly. With the screwjob finish and all.
Posted By: Vince Osorio (Registered) on January 09, 2012 at 01:32 AM
Does TNA still have that rule where the belt changes hands on a DQ? If so, the ending to this PPV is the biggest farce of all time. Even without that rule, it's still a pretty big farce (Hardy the true champion? Yeah, true champion of drugs maybe).
"He calls for his creatures to mount-up"
What, you mean the creatures that only he can see when he's stoned out of his mind? As far as Jeff can remember, they helped him beat Sting at Victory Road and led to a year-long reign.
Also, Pope gets buried in a useless feud over Devon's kids? Not buying out of principle.

This was not worth $35 plus your bill. The women's match was as bad we all thought it would be, no shocker there. Tag match was boring as hell. The main event ended with the classic Russo swerve. TNA will never be at the level they are conning people into believing.

It was an enjoyable show. Why can't you just leave it at that? You HAVE to bring in the WWE. Here's a fact, the Royal Rumble will be enjoyable as usual. Ziggler/Punk will be great.(don't expect a clean finish. Outside of those two matches, I don't for see other great matchups. But, why, for just one night, can't you be happy with the fact that TNA put on a good show and leave it at that?

'Gunner nails a DDT on the floor. Van Dam appears to be out on his feet as Gunner rolls him in. that's enough to get the pin (as it should be).
Agents and EMTs are out and RVD is doing a stretcher job for Gunner'
Can someone send John Cena a copy of this please? When you get DDT'd on the concrete floor you are meant to SELL it. Not recover within 90 seconds and destroy 2 opponents (Summerslam 2010)

Interesting that RVD put Gunnar over but lets see where that goes.
I hope this Devon/Pope feud is over. I never liked it. I hate the family drama but I know Devon is trying to get his sons in but there's probably more creative ways to do that. Maybe having them be tag team would be better since Devon has done that a couple of times.

Have to disagree with these ratings also. I gave this a try after avoiding TNA for a while and it was VERY "Meh, whatever"
There is no atmosphere in the Impact Arena, it looks and feels 3rd rate, and the wrestling is just not that exciting or ENTERTAINING...
Monster's Ball was just a clunky spotfest that didn't even appear to gel, and many of the other matches just felt like they could never be anything better than 3 star matches.
Won't be bothering again...

Very good technical match zero interest from the crowd until they started getting a few pinfall attempts."

Some more quality TV caliber matches from TNA that people had to pay for on PPV. THis is exactly why I don't watch TNA period. Not that WWE is unbelievably awesome or anything, but at least the PPV matches are at least decent compared to this garbage.
Posted By: Guest#0261 (Guest) on January 09, 2012 at 08:10 AM
Some good action, particularly the opener, but you can't end a second ppv in a row with a screwy finish. The star ratings on here are WAY over the top (3 stars for 6 mins and a dusty finsh?). Objectively it was an average show so i'm glad i have saved my money for the rumble.

I saw this PPV and it was not that good, The 2 DQs really brought it down.
Posted By: iomis (Guest) on January 09, 2012 at 06:00 PM
Here's my 2 cents on the whole "Well WWE does DQ and bs finishes all the time and no one says a word." It's true they do. But I thought TNA was suppose to be the alternative to WWE. So do the oppisite, have your champions look strong, have your titles mean something. I know it's a distant 3rd when dissicusing the top wrestling promotions in the U.S but the ROH title is made out to be something special that only few can obtain. If TNA took that approach with there belt that would be quite the game changer.
And I'd really much rather have Roode do something illegal and under handed and get a pinfall victory than to just roshambo the ref and blantntly get discolorfied. I understand what they are trying to do with Roode but he needs pin fall victorys to keep him strong this DQ and running away is not helping him. Hopefully they play this all up until Lockdown where he's in a cage and can't do stuff like that to win.
All in all though I enjoyed this PPV better than last months. X division was great, Monsters Ball was great, Hardy and Roode had a good match and it was good to see Velvet Sky's breast's again.
Posted By: Andre the Midget (Guest) on January 09, 2012 at 06:10 PM
DeMarco's Knee Jerk Reaction: Solid PPV effort from TNA, that will likely be unfairly panned by many. The wrestling was good, even if some of the booking was questionable. I called the finish of the main event in multiple places, simply because the booking made sense. Against All Odds might feature a few rematches (Roode-Hardy, Storm-Angle, Crimson/Morgan-Joe/Magnus), but those make sense and will be good outings. Posted By: the truth! (Guest) on January 09, 2012 at 07:07 PM
to all you bandwagon-jumping WWE marks:
TNA Impact still has the superior in-ring product. yes, their booking and writing sometimes suck, but they have the best wrestling. Mickie and Gail could out-wrestle any of the current divas. Magnus/Joe = good mismatched team. Bully Ray is awesome. AJ styles is the best wrestler in the business, bar none. great x-division match, decent Monster's Ball, good world title match, but a poorly booked finish. TNA forever bitches!!
Posted By: cerebral_paulzie (Guest) on January 09, 2012 at 11:07 PM
Good review, Solid is the best word for it, nothing was crap, but it lacked that killer 4/5 star match to make it a great PPV.
but it was a PPV i can easily watch again down the line which is good, was entertaining and never bored me all good points.
wcwfan makes a good point, impact zone does hurt them badly, you struggle to give matches 5-stars because they never have that 'big match' feel at the Impact zone, whack this PPV infront of a big 15,000 crowd and suddenly i bet it would be getting rave reviews, the quality of the wrestling wasn't the problem, the overall look still is.
but alas the harsh fact is TNa probably make a profit on this being at the Impact zone and a loss if anywhere else and financially they have to go with the profit

Didn't see the show, but was the head kick that Kurt won with his way of getting back at Orton for using the Angle slam?
Posted By: Guest#0134 (Guest) on January 10, 2012 at 08:39 PM
no, the kick at the end was because it was a way of swiping at Storm who is using a superkick as his finisher of late and won title with it.
it's just angle's versions of the superkick are blooming horrendous, not sure if it's because he's mocking the kick or just cannot do them properly but they look weak when he tries them.

...have YOU seen much from Japan? Are you seriously comparing the Impact Zone crowd(who will break out their pre-rehearsed, cookie-cutter chants without any semblance of spontaneity) with the crowds from Japan?
I can see it now: Misawa covering himself with half-rate tattoos, blatantly pandering to a three-quarters-empty Egg Dome for a "THIS IS AWESOME" chant, while whatever Hikikomori Wes Kirk equivalent out there slobs all over his knob while proclaiming that All Japan is all but dead now, baby!
Yep, bet it happens all the time.
