411’s Beyond Wrestling “Off The Grid Special” Report

February 17, 2012 | Posted by TJ Hawke

Denver Colorado welcomes us to the special, putting over Off the Grid and the main event, Dan Barry vs. Johnny Cockstrong. He also says that for the first time in Beyond’s history, there will be an unsanctioned match after the official main event, Jonny Mangue vs. The Pitboss. Denver then introduces the footage that caused this unsanctioned match to take place.

Back in Flesh

Johnny Gargano vs. Jonny Mangue
We are joined in progress, very late in the match. The Pitboss is talking to Mangue on the outside, and Gargano wipes them out with a suicide dive and a rolling senton off the ring apron. Gargano rolls Mangue back in the ring, and then sets up for the Gotcha Spear, but Pitboss held him up. Gargano kicks Pitboss away and goes for the spear, but Mangue caught him, and small packaged him: 1…2…3

It’s just the finishing sequence, but this was actually a very solid match that is worth checking out. The story was that Mangue didn’t know Pitboss cheated for him. Mangue was pissed off about the interference.

Tournament for Tomorrow

Pitboss attacks Sugar Dunkerton in his match with Mangue. Pitboss is chased away by Pinkie Sanchez. Mangue later won that match. Cut to Aaron Epic defeating Mangue in the semi-finals. Pitboss then comes out and attacks Epic. This time, Sugar Dunkerton chases him off.

The story is, after Chris Dickinson got injured, his stablemates, Jonny Mangue and The Pitboss, had a difference in opinion on how they should work going forward. Mangue was pissed that Pitboss interfered in his match with Johnny Gargano and he was pissed about the Tournament for Tomorrow.

The Boss Battle
Pitboss challenges the whole roster, and Fredo Majors (a CZW student) is the first to answer the call. Pitboss jumps him early, and he just completely dominated him. Pitboss eventually gave him a reverse DDT to get the pin. Pitboss then challenges Danny Only who accepts. Pitboss and Only immediately start slugging it out. The show cuts to the finish where Pitboss hits a big German suplex to finish off Only. Sugar Dunkerton then comes out to face Pitboss next. Sugar hits a big German suplex of his own and then nails him with a lariat. Pitboss then hit him in the head with a chain and Sugar got knocked out. Jonny Mangue comes and gets in his face. Mangue wants to fight, but Pitboss runs away. “The Pitboss fights when he wants to fight,” said The Pitboss. The referee tries to count out Pitboss, but Mangue stops him. So it ends in a “No Contest”

I liked this. It was strange that The Pitboss, a heel, ran through three faces, but some people need to be sacrificed at times for an angle to get over. The Pitboss looked like a killer in the first two matches, and also resourceful in the Sugar segment. However, he established he was still a heel though when he ran away from Mangue.

Next, we see a series of promos that Denver, Pitboss and Mangue cut on each other. It covers the history of their promos, starting from when Off the Grid was announced to when the match was officially announced. Pitboss says he will put Mangue down at Off the Grid. Denver Colorado says in a promo that Pitboss is not invited in a show (which originally had a secret location). The Pitboss says he got the original building condemned, and he threatens worse if he doesn’t get to be on the show. Denver says that he has a match now with Mangue, but Mangue gets to pick the stipulation. Mangue says he wants a Dog Collar match. Everything you would need to know about this angle was made clear in this series of videos.

Denver Colorado pops back up to discuss The Professional Revolution from Leon St. Giovanni, JT Dunn, and Jon Harder.

Steve “The Turtle” Weiner vs. Johnny Cockstrong vs. Anthony Stone vs. JT Dunn
We just see the end where Weiner gets killed and Cockstrong pins him.

Cut to backstage where Jon Harder approaches the Turtle, offering to be his manager. The Turtle accepts his services for his second match on the show against JT Dunn. The Turtle then makes Harder take off his nice suit jacket and gives him a turtle shirt. “It’s time to SHELL UP to VICTORY!” Harder begrudgingly puts it on.

JT Dunn vs. Steve “The Turtle” Weiner (w/ Jon Harder)
Turtle was running around, acting crazy to start the match, but Harder told him to act serious. We cut to closer to the end of the match. The Turtle is actually having some success, and he locks in a nice leg submission. Dunn was able to escape, and he eventually got the advantage back. Dunn hit a series of nice kicks, but Turtle turned him inside out with a lariat. Turtle then hits a big German suplex that caused the crowd to rally behind him. Turtle hits the Shell Shock: 1…2…NO! Harder then gets on the apron and distracts the referee and tosses Dunn a pipe. Dunn then whacks Turtle with the pipe and knocks him out: 1…2…3

It turns out that Harder and Dunn were in cahoots from the beginning. Harder tells Denver Colorado that the Professional Revolution is growing. The #KOA and Mark Angel come into the ring to check on the Turtle. My only problem with this angle is that Harder and Dunn’s plan of tricking Turtle into a match just to beat him down at the end is pretty convoluted. At Off the Grid, JT Dunn and Leon St. Giovanni will be wrestling The Super Smash Bros. Jon Harder will be in Dunn and Giovanni’s corner. The Turtle will be in the Smash Bros.’s corner.

Denver Colorado pops back up to discuss the Anthony Stone feud with Nick Talent.

Steve “The Turtle” Weiner vs. Johnny Cockstrong vs. Anthony Stone vs. JT Dunn
Dunn and Weiner had already been eliminated in the footage not shown. Cockstrong tries for a top-rope Schweign, but Stone avoids it. Cockstrong then hits a Go-2-Cock (exactly what it sounds like). RD Evan’s theme music plays, which distracts Cockstrong. That allows Stone to hit a running double knee press to pin Cockstrong: 1…2…3. Cockstrong is the “Wins Leader” in Beyond, so pinning him is a big deal. I never like the “entrance music distracts the stupid babyface” spot, but oh well. It’s pretty commonplace now.

Nick Talent and Mark Angel meet up with Stone backstage. Talent proposes that they make a trios team to combat the #KOA (Sugar Dunkerton, Aaron Epic, and Pinkie Sanchez). Stone and Talent used to team together in Beyond, but Stone had left for a while to work on his team called DUI. Stone agrees, and we now get footage of…

#KOA (Sugar Dunkerton, Aaron Epic, and Pinkie Sanchez) vs. The Academy of Anatomy (Nick Talent, Mark Angel, and Anthony Stone)
We are joined in progress. Pinkie and Talent end up on the top rope, but Talent pushes Pinkie off. Stone then accidentally crotches Talent before he hits a running double knee press on Pinkie: 1…2…3

Talent is pissed about how the match ended. Talent walks off on his team. Angel says that Stone did the right thing. TENSION~! At Off the Grid, Nick Talent and Mark Angel will take on Anthony Stone and Kellan Thomas.

AR Fox vs. Mark Angel (w/ Nick Talent)
Fox has made several appearances for Beyond since October. He lost to RD Evans at Back in Flesh and to ACH in the first round of the Tournament for Tomorrow. Both matches were very strong and some of the best matches I have seen from him.

Fox is wrestling in shorts here. Angel tried to jump Fox before the match started, but Fox easily escaped. Angel tried to ground Fox early with headlocks. Fox took him down with a dropkick and Angel rolled to the outside. Fox went for a no-hands somersault plancha, but Angel avoided it…and Fox landed on his feet. In-fucking-credible. Angel goes for a baseball slide, but Fox avoids that. Angel then crotches Fox. Fox recovered and hit a rolling DVD back in the ring. Fox got a sleeper, and Angel almost passed out. Angel recovered and hit a chin breaker, but Fox hit a running body press to Angel’s back. Angel came back with a series of dropkicks. Fox sent Angel to the floor and then hit a slingshot Asai Moonsault. That. Was. Sick. Fox went for a springboard move, but Angel avoided it. They traded rollups after that. Angel went to the top rope, but Fox jumped to the top turnbuckle and hit the Lo Mein Pain: 1…2…NO! They got to their feet and started trading some big elbows, until Angel hit an end-over-end back suplex. Fox recovered and gave him a sole butt and an axe kick. Angel avoided a leg submission and then hit a big spinebuster: 1…2…3!

This was a really fun match. AR Fox has become one of the wrestlers where I now want to see him anywhere and everywhere because he is just so enjoyable. Angel is a very solid talent and I’m glad that Beyond is giving him a nice showcase.
Match Rating: ***1/2

Denver Colorado ends this free special running down all the other matches on the card.

The 411: Beyond Wrestling essentially made a “go-home” TV show for their live event, Off the Grid. Basically, for everyone going to Off the Grid, this show is a must-watch so that you understand all the major storylines going on. I had seen most of the footage shown here, but even I felt like I had a greater appreciation of the stories after watching this. If you can’t go to Off the Grid, but you are a fan of Beyond, this show is a must watch. Also, in true Beyond fashion, they put up a free match as the “main event” of the go-home show and it was very entertaining. Plus, that main event was used to put over one of the homegrown talents (Angel) at the expense of a more famous “outside star” (Fox). Good stuff all around.
