WWE MAIN EVENT 2.27.13

– Kaitlyn runs into Cody Rhodes backstage. Sheamus gets involved and makes fun of Cody’s stache. Obviously, the next logical step for Cody is to challenge Sheamus to a match. Sheamus obliges and it’s official.

Sheamus vs. Cody Rhodes

This one’s for all the marbles. Cody pounces Sheamus to start things off and gets thrown off for his efforts. He checks on his mustache to make sure it’s still in order as makes it to his feet. Sheamus gives Cody a clothesline to the outside and Cody takes his time getting back in. Upon re-entry, things aren’t looking any brighter as Sheamus hits a nice snap suplex on Cody for a two count. Cody sends Sheamus to the outside now! He dives off of the apron but Sheamus catches him! Sheamus attempts to ram him into the ring post but Cody escapes! Sheamus catches him again and sends him face first into the announce table. Cody rolls into the ring and hits Sheamus with the disaster kick as Sheamus tries folllowing him in!

We’re back! Cody delivers a nice DDT for two. Cody locks in a front face lock as the crowd rallies behind Sheamus. Cole is putting over Cody’s new found motivation that his crush on Kaitlyn is giving him on his path to impressing her. Cody isolates Sheamus before Sheamus gets a roll up for TWO. Sheamus can’t follow through though, and Cody hits a nice dropkick. This whole mustache thing is growing tired QUICK. He’s not going to advance up the card working a gimmick based solely around his mustache. Sheamus hits the Irish curse and here we go. He hits two running ax handles and tosses Rhodes over the top. Cody skins the cat and celebrates before getting knocked over again. Cody still manages to hang on and gets hit with the 10 count clubbering from Sheamus in the corner. Sheamus hits a shoulder tackle off the top and only gets two! Sheamus charges at Cody in the corner and goes shoulder first! Cody hits a NICE MOONSAULT~! for two. Sheamus goes for a roll up and gets two! Cody counters a clover leaf and hits a nice running knee for another TWO! FINISHER REVERSAL SEQUENCE! The Brogue Kick wins. Obvs. This was a pretty solid match. It was nice to see Cody get some legitimate offense on TV too.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Sheamus @ 13:14 via pin
RATING: **3/4

Mark Henry vs. Justin Gabriel

Gabriel is about to get his wig split. Mark looks extra mean, extra focused, and extra drippy. The perfect storm. Mark goes for a clothesline and Gabriel catches him with some quick kicks to the mid-section. Henry is fast to corner him. Henry’s kicking the shit out of Gabriel saying “You like to kick people? I do too!” Gabriel breaks a grapple and hammers Henry with a few more kicks and a forearm before Henry takes him down with a monstrous clothesline. Henry’s just choking Gabriel at this point with what Cole calls “big old bear claws”. Now I’m hungry. Henry goes for a powerslam but Gabriel slips out and begins to chop the big man down with, you guessed it, more kicks! Gabriel goes for a cross body but gets caught up. Henry gives him the powerslam this time and drags Gabriel to the corner. VADER BOMB! World’s Strongest Slam! It’s over! That Vader Bomb looked a little off. It looked like Gabriel was supposed to roll out of the way but didn’t in time, this getting caught with the bomb. Either way, this wasn’t very exciting. Henry looks strong moving forward and Gabriel never stood a chance. Listen, I understand the importance of a squash. Squash matches are most enjoyable when introducing new talent. In a setting like this, it’s pretty hard to suspend your disbelief long enough to buy into Gabriel’s sprinkles of offense.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Mark Henry @ 4:31 via pin
RATING: *

– We get a video package of Ryback dominating.

– Kaitlyn runs into Cody backstage and says the mustache doesn’t give up. Awkward moment. She bounces. At least Cody’s busy with something? Not everybody can have a rocket strapped to their ass at once, but Cody’s lost a lot of stock in very little time.

RAW REBOUND: We get a recap of the Lesnar/Trips angle on Raw. Man, remember when the Mania main events leaked and everybody was hoping that they were wrong?

~–Commercial Break–~

RAW REBOUND PART 2 We get a hack and slashed version of the brilliant CM Punk vs John Cena match on Monday. I can’t remember the last time I was so compelled by a match on free TV. The story of Cena busting out moves that aren’t in his repertoire in attempt to catch Punk off guard was awesome. If you haven’t seen this match yet, please go out of your way to do so.

RATING: ****1/2 (For the full match on Monday)

OVERALL: Not a bad Main Event tonight! Cody Rhodes and Sheamus had a decent showing, Mark Henry continues inducting people into the Hall of Pain and they aired a lot of the Cena/Punk match from Monday. Despite my fear of Main Event slowly dropping down the totem pole, it’s consistently a great hour of wrestling. I’ll see you guys on Friday for the official Smackdown report!
