WWE Smackdown Report 6.14.13

– Here comes Daniel Bryan to kick off the show! No need for canned pops when D-Bry is making his way down to the ring. The crowd is rabid for him. “If you would have asked me if I’d be the World Champion when I first joined the WWE, I’d have said yes. If you asked me if I’d lose the title in 18 seconds, I would have responded with no.” He says that Team Hell No is one of the best tag teams in WWE history before calling Kane down to the ring. He covers his ears in anticipation for the pyro.

PYRO~!

– Kane makes his way down to the ring. Kane says that he knows why Daniel called him out but it’s not the time or the place. Kane only cares about the six man tag against Shield tonight. Bryan wants to get everything out in the open though. He’s proud of everything they’ve accomplished in the ring and outside of the ring to become better partners. Daniel Bryan says that on Sunday, he’s going to be tag team champions with somebody else. “You and I? I won’t be teaming with you anymore.” Kane asks if Daniel is breaking up with him and the crowd lets out a big laugh. Kane gets jealous when he names Randy Orton and himself team RK-NOOOOO. Kane doesn’t think Bryan can beat The Shield with Orton. If he couldn’t do it with Kane, how could he do it with Orton? On Sunday, Daniel Bryan is going to prove to everybody that he’s not the weak link. Kane is going to have to sit back and realize that him and Randy are going to do something Kane and him could never do. Kane asks if Daniel Bryan thinks he’s the weak link and Bryan says yes.

– Kane goes for a chokeslam and this brings out Randy Orton. Whatever Kane does to Bryan will directly effect Randy and he can’t let Kane do it. If Kane chokeslams Daniel Bryan it may start a chain reaction that ends with Kane eating an RKO. Daniel Bryan gets in Orton’s face and says that he didn’t ask to be saved. The Shield pop up on the Tron. They’re laughing and tell them to keep going. Dean Ambrose says that it’s like a train wreck that he can’t look away from. He says it’s funny that they’re mad at each other and not The Shield, the team that they’ve been losing to for six months. The Shield defeated every super team put together and sent their way. The question is… do they believe in The Shield now?

– Sheamus is heading to the ring! Sheamus vs. Cesaro is next!

-Commercial Break-

– Before the match can start, Damien comes out. He says that the man standing across from Sheamus can speak five different languages and he’s willing to bet that Sheamus can barely speak one. On Sunday he’ll be host to his Irish wake.

Sheamus vs. Antonio Cesaro
Cesaro gets the commercial entrance. Boooo. Sheamus powers Cesaro into the corner to start. Cesaro hits him with an uppercut. He pushes Sheamus into the adjacent corner and smacks him right across the face. This enrages Sheamus and he just beats Cesaro up for a moment with some strikes. Sheamus hits a powerlam for two. Colter is on the App putting over Cesaro. Cesaro utilizes a belly to back take down followed by his patented dead lift into a gut wrench on Sheamus. Sheamus rolls to the outside. Cesaro runs the apron and flies off onto Sheamus. Sheamus catches him and slams him into the barricade as we head to break.

-Commercial Break-

Sheamus hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for a two count as we come back from break. Cesaro and Sheamus make it to the outside and Cesaro tackles him sending him back first into the ring steps. He rolls in Sheamus and gets TWO. Cesaro grabs in a headlock and begins spinning Sheamus around before dropping him and covering him for two! That was awesome. Sheamus comes back with a back body drop and a few running forearm clubs. He charges at Cesaro again but eats a clothesline followed by a huge stomp to the chest for TWO. They go back and forth for a moment before Cesaro finds himself on the receiving end of THE CLUBBERING! Sheamus lifts him up and hits the Irish Curse OVER the top rope for a very close nearfall. Antonio Cesaro slips off of Sheamus’ shoulders and hits a Death Valley Driver variation on Sheamus! Sheamus lifts himself up in the corner and hits Cesaro with a Brogue Kick out of nowhere! That’s enough for the win! This was an absolute treat to watch. It was seven and a half minutes of two men beating the hell out of each other. They busted out some great power moves and their chemistry is off the charts. I’d love to see them work an actual program.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Sheamus @ 7:27 aired via pinfall
RATING: ***1/4

– After the match, Damien Sandow sneak attacks Sheamus on the ramp to a chorus of boos. The crowd chants Sheamus and cheers when he makes it to his feet. Backstage Triple H died a little inside.

-Commercial Break-

– Wyatt Family promo! We need to stop lying to our children and telling them that monsters aren’t real. I can’t wait for their debut.

– We get a video package hyping up CM Punk’s return. They show footage from all of his different looks through the years and air a bunch of his promo quotes over the video. It’s very well put together.

– Teddy Long is on the phone backstage. He’s going to enjoy the rest of the show by eating a Hardee’s burger. He’s about to take a bite of one before Ziggler, Big E, and AJ interrupt. Dolph says that he’s days away from his biggest title defense in his career and he’s upset about having to wrestle two days beforehand. Teddy goes to take a bite but Big E grabs it from him and says “MMM, it’s good!” with a mouth full of food. He takes three HUGE bites before handing it back to Teddy and walking away.

-Commercial Break-

The Great Khali (w/ Natalya and Hornswoggle) vs. Heath Slater (w/ Drew McIntyre and Jinder Mahal)
Khali shoves Slater down to the mat. Slater smacks Khali in the face and Khali chops him over the head. He pushes Slater into a corner and hits a huge overhand chop. Another corner. Another chop. 3MB distract Khali a bit from the outside which allows Slater to beat Khali up in the corner. He hits a nice running shoulder thrust. He goes to the well again and eats a clotheline. Another clothesline. Another Clothesline. McIntyre shoves Swoggle down to the mat on the outside! Slater chops Khali in the back of the leg! Slater DDTs Khali while the big man is on his knees. That’s enough for the win! This was a fun little match. It was short and inoffensive. It’s always nice to see Slater pick up a TV win.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Heath Slater @ 2:21 via pinfall
RATING: N/A

-Commercial Break-

Chris Jericho and Alberto Del Rio (w/ Ricardo) vs. Dolph Ziggler and Big E Langston (w/ AJ)
Here we go! Ziggler is starting things of with Del Rio. He tags Big E in before ADR can lay a finger on him. They exchange some punches and kicks before Alberto tags in Jericho. Jericho delivers a few chops and punches to Big E. Jericho finally gets the big man down with an Enziguri. TWO. Big E is quick to fight back and shoulder thrusts Y2J in the corner a few times. In comes Ziggler. He pummels Jericho with a flurry of stomps and gives him a snapmare. He drops a huge elbow to the heart and only gets two. In comes Big E now. He misses a splash in the corner and Jericho rolls him up for two. He delivers a dropkick to the big man and tags ADR back in. ADR nails him with a dropkick followed by the lung blower for two. Ziggler and Big E are outside catching a breather as we head to break.

-Commercial Break

Jericho and Langston are legal as we come back from commercial break. Jericho clotheslines him over the top and hits him with a baseball slide from the inside. Ziggler distracts the ref and AJ slaps Jericho in the face. This gives Langston the opportunity to send Jericho off the apron into the barricade. He slams Jericho in the barricade again and rolls him in for a two count. He knocks Jericho down with a running body splash and covers Jericho for another nearfall. In comes Ziggler with the reverse neckbreaker. Ziggler misses a clothesline in the corner and Jericho takes him down with the running bulldog. Alberto gets the hot tag and hits a few clotheslines before hitting a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Langston mauls ADR and takes Jericho to the outside with him. ADR rolls Ziggler up for three and picks the victory up for his team! This was a solid tag team match. Big E is getting better with every passing week and everybody else was just as good as always. The wrestling 101 handbook suggests that Ziggler is picking up the win at Payback.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Chris Jericho and Alberto Del Rio @ 8:07 aired via roll-up
RATING: **1/2

– They recap the opening segment with The Shield and Kane, Orton and Bryan.

– Kaitlyn is heading to the ring for a match up next.

-Commercial Break-

– Chris Jericho cuts a promo on CM Punk in the back with Renee Young. He puts over what the crowd is going to be like in Chicago. He mentions his debut against the Rock in Chicago. He says that this match will exceed the expectations that their first two matches set. Paul Heyman interrupts and extends his hand. Jericho doesn’t bite. Heyman says that luck is for losers and Jericho is going to need the luck he’s offering him. Jericho slaps the mic into Heyman’s face and says “pipe bomb” before walking away.

Kaitlyn vs. Aksana
They replay the Big E/Kaitlyn segment on Monday. Aksana laughs at it and Kaitlyn attacks! She goes bat shit as she pulls hair, slaps, punches, kicks and everything else in attempt to hurt Aksana. The ref eventually pulls Kaitlyn off Aksana and Kaitlyn slaps him in the face to a nice pop. This gives Aksana an opportunity to run away. The match never officially began. This was a pretty good segment to hammer home how upset Kaitlyn is with AJ Lee.

OFFICIAL RESULT: No Match
RATING: N/A

– They air a pretty good video package for the Three Stages of Hell match this Sunday. If you didn’t see Raw you’d be convinced the closing segment was a winner.

-Commercial Break-

– Wade Barrett grabs a mic before the match and wants to chat with Paul, business man to business man. He asks why they’d want to have this match tonight. They could both injure each other before Sunday. Heyman and Axel look like they’re going to accept the offer before Miz comes out. He makes a few lame jokes before saying that everybody wants to see them fight. He gets the crowd to start a “fight” chant before the bell rings.

Curtis Axel (w/ Paul Heyman) vs. Wade Barrett
They exchange some punches and knee strikes to start things off. Barrett hits a short arm clothesline for two. Axel comes back with a beautiful looking dropkick for two. Axel misses a clothesline and eats a side kick to the gut. Barrett follows him to the outside and ends up taking a headshot into the steps. Barrett tosses Miz into Axel and Miz hits the floor. Barrett attempts to get back in the ring and Axel hits his running cutter before Barrett can get all the way in. He covers Barrett for the win. This was more angle advancement than anything. It was fine but I’m not really interested in the triple threat match. The IC title almost never gets a storyline built around it besides exchanging wins and doing guest commentary.

OFFICIAL RESULT Curtis Axel @ 1:57 via pinfall
RATING: N/R

– Another Wyatt Family promo! They’re coming!

-Commercial Break-

The Shield vs. Team Hell No and Randy Orton

Orton pounds away on Ambrose for a bit. He hits a snap suplex and tags Bryan in. Ambrose corners Bryan in The Shield’s corner and tags in Reigns. Reigns hits a huge scoop slam for two and tags in Rollins. Rollins chops away at Bryan with forearms and stomps in The Shield’s corner. Ambrose is back in and keeps momentum on their side with a few elbows. He locks in a nice chinlock variation and turns it into a modified dragon sleeper. Daniel Bryan escapes and knees him in the gut. In comes Orton! Orton cleans house and hits Ambrose with the powerslam! He gives one to Rollins as well! He goes for a double assisted DDT on Ambrose and Rollins. Ambrose fights out of it and DDTs Orton for two as we head to break.

-Commercial Break-

Ambrose is in control of Orton as we return. He tags in Reigns. Reigns delivers some stops and gets a nearfall. He chokes Orton up on the bottom rope. Orton fights out of a Samoan Drop attempt from Reigns and hits his modified backbreaker. Reigns charges at Orton in the corner but Orton side steps. Reigns hits the ring post! Double hot tag. Ambrose and Kane are in. Kane cleans house and hits a nice powerslam on Ambrose. He delivers a pair of corner clothes followed by a sideslam and covers Ambrose for two. Ambrose makes it to his feet and hits Kane with a huge dropkick! In comes Bryan! DROPKICKS FOR EVERYBODY! DIVE THROUGH THE ROPES! He rolls in Rollins! RUNNING DROPKICK. ANOTHER RUNNING DROPKICK! PINFALL ATTEMPT! TWOOOOOOO. Yes kicks! Reigns tries to sneak in but ends up getting kicked in the face. More yes kicks for Rollins! Bryan goes for the flying headbutt! Ambrose tries to pull him down but he fights Ambrose off! THE CROWD IS INSANE. He misses the flying headbutt and Rollins covers him for two! Kane sends out Ambrose! Reigns sends out Kane. Orton tries to throw Reigns over but eats a spear! Kane sends Reigns into the time keepers area! He chokeslams Ambrose on top of him! Rollins powerbombs Bryan into the corner! He goes upstairs but Kane pushes Rollins off the top rope into a motherfucking RKO! NO LOCK! IT’S OVER! This may not have been as long as the typical Shield six man tag match but it doesn’t matter. They delivered one of the best ending sequences I’ve EVER witnessed. The crowd was eating everything up which made this seem even more special. This is one of those matches I’ll probably watch a few more times. It was an amazing effort from all involved. Expect it to be featured in a few DVD sets.

OFFICIAL RESULT Team Hell No and Randy Orton @ 9:00 via pinfall
RATING: ***1/2

OVERALL: This was another awesome installment of Smackdown. They delivered the goods tonight. Even more impressive is that it was the go home show which is typically boring. The show closed with my favorite moment of the year so far. Find the main event and watch it immediately. Check out Sheamus/Cesaro too. Both matches were brilliantly executed. Besides Slater/Khali (which I enjoyed as a short and fun segment) everything was solid build to the PPV on Sunday.8.0/10
