The Smackdown Summary 4.28.06
Posted by Rik Bone on 04.28.2006
The US Champion, the World Champion and the OVW Champion all in action! Plus, how predictable is the WWE? We put it, and you, to the test.
Last week we were told that Lashley will meet Henry in their King of the Ring First Round Match and Rey Mysterio will defend his World Title against Kurt Angle. What will happen? We're about to find out...
Welcome to the SMACKDOWN SUMMARY!!!
============================
Smackdown: 28th April 2006
============================
We start with a package saying how tonight the Biggest Prize in the industry is on the line as Kurt Angle - who never "lost" the title - is against the Underdog World Champion, Rey Mysterio. Is tonight the night where Mysterio's dream comes to an end?
Cue Fireworks, and we've got the same layout as we did on Raw with the Double Decker buses and all.
Team Blue, Cole and Tazz run us through tonight's show, including Henry -v- Lashley.
Match 1 - JBL Vs. William Regal
Stipulation: WWE US Championship Match
JBL comes out wearing a Stars and Stripes jacket, which gets heat. He's holding a microphone too, which means it's promo time. He calls England the "former empire", and plugs that his US Title is the biggest title in sports entertainment, as America is the only Superpower. He states that the UK can't win anything by itself, and that it's always depending on America. He then bad mouth's Tony Blair and actually gets a POP! Go JBL! I can see the face turn now! Instead, he makes fun of the Queen, which gets an "England" chant. JBL tries to get a "USA" chant going, which turns into a "USA Sucks" chant, before William Regal has had enough and comes out to POP! JBL looks PISSED!
Side note. Remember a few weeks ago when these guys were all chummy-chummy prior to JBL's match against Benoit and hand-picked Regal to destroy Benoit? Shame that "WWE Creative Inc." couldn't. Surely having Burchill wrestle here would have been a better move... let's see how it unfolds.
Regal takes the mike off JBL. Regal confirms that Tony Blair is "a muppet" and "a divvy" (POP!), and then tells JBL that America is full of "worthless useless corwardly pathetic bigheaded bigmouthed tosspots", before saying that he accepts JBL's challenge to a match and blindsides JBL.
Early match sees Regal taking a massive advantage, ripping the jacket off JBLs back and choking him with it. Regal plays up to the crowd and gets a few "Regal" and "Let's Go Regal" chants going. Regal delivers some stiff looking moves to Bradshaw, which is good coming off the back of some more JBL backstage antics. Regal knocks Bradshaw out the ring and we go to a break...
Regal is still up on Bradshaw, but it's quickly swung in favour of JBL with a big boot to the face of Regal. JBL goes to work with patent JBL moves – lots of kicks, punches and a Sleeper Hold of Doom! Regal is bleeding from the ear, but counters the Sleeper into a Belly to Back drop, but JBL regains the advantage almost immediately after. After a decent start to the match, it starts to fade out, until Regal counters the Clothesline From Hell into a T-Bone suplex (thought he was going for the C4 for a second…). Regal starts cooking, and nails a knee to the side of the head, and then locks in the Regal Stretch (which Cole calls the STF – note to Cole, watch Raw and see Cena do the STF and then see Regal's move). Seconds after almost passing out to the Regal Stretch, Bradshaw is up, pokes Regal in the eye with a thumb and hits the Clothesline From Hell out of nowhere to keep his belt.
Winner: JBL via Pinfall after Clothesline From Hell

Krystal introduces Booker T and Sharmell. Booker is ready for Kurt, and Krystal asks for Booker's prediction. Sharmell interrupts and says this is Booker time not time to talk about Rey or Kurt. Booker is midway through his FIVE TIME speech, when Gunnar Scott turns up, and says that Booker might not know who he is, but he's a guy who beat Booker T a few weeks ago. Booker says that Gunnar Scott "Didn't just say what he thought he just said." Booker says he could beat Scott… just not tonight as he's got a chest infection, but Booker promises Scott a match tonight against a mystery opponent, if he can dig that. Sucka.
We get the first "Kurt Angle's Winner's Circle" segment of the night. It's from No Mercy on 22 October 2000, where Kurt faced The Rock. The match ended when Rikishi came down and allowed Kurt to hit the Angle Slam on The Rock and become the WWF Champion. Kurt with hair looks weird.
The Birth of a Warrior segment is shown. It talks about Native Americans, and so Tatanka is shown. Apparently next week "The Initiation" begins… Huh?
Match 2 – 6 Man Tag Match Action: MNM & Helms Vs. The Hooligans and Super Crazy
Stipulation: None
MNM are out first, and we get the gorgeous Melina. Funny how when it comes to the WWE Tag Team Champions, the biggest talking point is Melina's in ring entrance. Next in is the returning Gregory Helms, who is still your Cruiserweight Champion. So much for the good old 30 day rule… In come Kendrick and London, who I've heard are now called the Hooligans. I've been ranting for a while that they needed a name for this tag team, and now I've heard what they've come up with, I'd rather they stayed with Kendrick/London. Super Crazy is the last man out, and he comes out alone (no Psicosis).
Match starts with the faces taking the upper hand and with all the heels outside the ring, the faces leap out the ring and take them all out. Melina is then involved to attack Kendrick, and so the heels take control. MNM do some nice tag team moves that I haven't seen them do before including a slingshot elbow drop/backbreaker combination. My roommate strikes up a conversation about if Melina screams that loud because she was pleased for a clothesline, how loud would she scream if she was pleased in bed? Interesting thought, no? Kendrick makes the hot tag and all hell breaks loose. Bodies go flying out the ring. Helms and London are left in the ring, and London counters a Brainbuster attempt into a small package for the pin. MNM plead to Melina that it wasn't their fault that they lost, but Melina is not happy.
Winner: The Hooligans and Super Crazy via Pinfall when London pinned Helms
****************
Team Blue announce that after the break it's Mark Henry Vs Bobby Lashley in the King Of The Ring tournament.
We get the second "Kurt Angle's Winners Circle" segment of the night. It's from Unforgiven on 23 September 2001. Kurt beats "Stone Cold" Steve Austin via tap out – even though Austin's hand was under the bottom rope.
Melina is pissed off with MNM. Melina goes to freshen up, when she bumps into Jillian Hall. Melina says it was embarrassing for her ot get fired, and so gives here a job as make up. Hall throws it in here face and the two divas get into a make up fight. MNM break it up before more "officials" step in.
Lashley calls this a huge opportunity for him, and names the greats who have won the tournament, and how he wants to add his name to the list. He callsit the biggest match of his career and that he's really REALLY… looking forward to it? Is that it? Someone give him a mouthpiece quickly if you're gonna try and push him big time.
We get the third "Kurt Angle's Winners Circle" segment of the night from Armageddon on the 15th Decemeber 2002. He hits a big time Angle Slam to Big Show and Angle three-peats as WWE Champion.
Match 3 – Mark Henry Vs Lashley
Stipulation: King Of The Ring First Round Match.
Prior to the match, both men glance at the Throne set up, which is always a nice touch. Lashley looks intense… Henry looks like he's hungry. Henry is wearing gold pads, to match his gold outfit trimmings. One word my friend: Ug-ger-ly. Henry overpowers Lashley at the start of the match, and so Lashley is reverted to using punches and kicks. He can't lift up Henry for a slam, and so Henry uses his strength to control the match. Henry starts to showboat, so Lashley explodes with a clothesline (which hardly budges Henry), and again nails some punches and kicks, but Henry comes back with a clothesline of his own, leaving Lashley floored!
Henry controls the match until Lashley hits a clothesline from nowhere, and two clotheslines later puts Henry down. Lashley picks up Henry and slams him down. Lashley fails the dominator attempt – as Henry counters with a backdrop. Henry then charages at Lashley, only for lashley to hold the top rope down and Henry goes flying. It's enough to get the countout finish… Henry doesn't even budge during the 10 count. Post match, however, Henry is up and about and destroys Lashley, squashing him outside the ring against the steel post (in, perhaps, the least convincing move of the evening).
Winner: Bobby Lashley via Countout.
****************
Krystal interviews Rey Mysterio. She asks if she's gonna lose tonight. Rey doesn't know. He's just living his dream. Tonight he's gonna stay away from the Anklelock. Rey will give 100% and try and beat the Wrestling Machine. If he loses tonight, "it was well worth it".
Booker and Sharmell are out. But first we cut to another Kurt Angle Wrestling Circle: Back at Vengeance in 2003, Kurt Angle became a four time WWE Champion after pinning Brock Lesnar in a Triple Threat Match following the Angle Slam. The Big Show was the third wrestler in the match.
Match 4 - Gunnar Scott Vs ???
Stipulation: Booker Picks Gunnar's Opponent
We're back to the ring, and out comes the OVW Champion, Brent Albright Gunnar Scott. Tazz has done his research on "this guy" apparently, but fails to mention anything OVW related. Booker T announces that Gunnar's opponent, is Finlay.
Booker is on commentry and coughs every five seconds, as Finlay takes control. This should be quite a decent technical match. Gunnar jumps over Finaly in the corner to regain the advantage, but then Finlay uses the ring apron material in a nice way to trap Gunnar, and then takes it to Gunnar. Gunnar takes a beating, but the match is moving quick and Finlay catches a boo to the face following a second rope jump. The match swings backwards and forwards quickly, and outside the ring Finlay tries to hit Scott only to get backdropped onto the floor. Gunnar throws Finlay in the ring, but Booker jumps up and hits a side shuffle kick to Gunnar. Booker throws Scott into the ring and then Finlay hits an Emerald Fusion like move to get the pinfall. Post match, Booker runs around the ring and the two beat down on Gunnar Scott before Chris Benoit runs out for the save. Team Blue plug next week's Benoit Vs Finlay match.
Winner: Finlay via pinfall

Plug for Kane's movie See No Evil... grab a drink, or in my case, a bar of chocolate.
Krystal is in the ring and introduces the Great Khali. They do a nice camera shot from behind Krystal making Khali look even bigger than usual. Daivari "confirms" that the Undertaker is embarrassed and had his confidence dashed at the hands of The Great Khali. Daivari claims that the Undertaker is afraid of the Great Khali, who then gets the microphone and blabbers on, getting the "WHAT?" treatment from the crowd. Khali eventually scares Krystal away: the crowd couldn't care less.
The final Kurt moment shows Kurt Angle winning the World Heavyweight Title by eliminating Mark Henry in the Battle Royal back in January this year.
Match 5 - Rey Mysterio Vs Kurt Angle
Stipulation: World Heavyweight Title Match
Finally the big one - it's Main Event time and what a main event it is. Cole uses the phrase "miffed" to describe how Kurt is feeling right now. Both guys get decent pops upon entrance. Surprisingly, Rey gets the early momentum, until he runs into an uppercut by the contender, and favourite to win. Rey battles back and takes his time, unusually, which comes back to haunt him as Kurt pulls out a top drawer Tilt-A-Whirl backbreaker, before delivering a standard backbreaker to Rey. Just when Rey seems to be fighting back again, Kurt hits a Belly To Belly over the top rope as we fly into a commercial break.
Back from the break and Kurt has a Grapevine Sleeper Hold on Rey. Everything Rey does to try and battle back fails, as Kurt is always one step ahead. Kurt goes for the Angle Slam, but Rey counters with a Sunset Flip, which Angle counters with an Anklelock attempt, but swings Angle over. Angle tries a sunset flip, but Rey rolls through and hits a sweet kick to the temple of Angle. Rey is now in control and does a headscissors takedown, leaving Angle in the 619 position, but Angle elbows Rey before he can nail the move. Rey connects with the Wheelbarrow Bulldog, but runs into a Belly to Belly throw. Angle "snaps" but again can't hit his Angle Slam as Rey turns it into a DDT. Rey goes to the top rope, and Kurt leaps up top and hits a Double Underhook Suplex from the top rope. Kurt misses a shoulder thrust into the corner, and hits the ring post and falls to the outside. As Angle gets into the ring, Rey "drops the dime", but it's only good enough for two. Rey takes too long in thinking about what to do next, and his attempt for another Wheelbarrow Bulldog turns into a release German Suplex. Angle is ready for the Angle Slam, which is this time countered into a hurricanrana and Angle is in the 619 position. Rey hits it, but his West Coast Pop is countered into an Anklelock but Mark Henry is here to stop the show. He throws Angle to the outside and damages his back against the ring. He then hits the same splash spot that he did to Lashley earlier, before getting a table from under the ring. He puts Angle on the table and then jumps on Angle, putting him through the table. Angle sells it well, but the replays show that Henry's feet were almost on the floor before he made contact with Angle. The show ends with Henry snarling.
Winner: Kurt Angle via DQ after Henry interfered.

Post Show Thoughts
============================
A decent show, leaving a few unanswered questions - most of the good questions, and only one "WHY?!" question. That, of course, is why did Mark Henry attack Kurt Angle? Instead of concentrating on Lashley (which seemed to be at the back of Henry's mind), his biggest problem was Kurt? Maybe it's got something to do with Henry still blaming Angle for stealing his moment, but I swear they already did that angle. Meh... it now leaves Rey without an opponent - JBL is the only person he might feud with. The other matches tonight were good - and the tag match was interesting. London won a #1 contenders match a while ago on Velocity, and now he holds a pinfall victory over the champion. Whether they'll go down that line, or keep their concentration on the Hooligans -v- MNM feud. Looks like sometime in the close future we'll get another six man tag match pitting the Hooligans and Jillian Hall against MNM with Melina. And what's this thing they're doing with Tatanka? That's... different?
Next week we're only guaranteed one thing so far: Chris Benoit Vs Finlay, which leaves a lot of time to tie up the loose ends. Should make interesting TV if anything.
Overall Show Opinion: 7/10 Solid show with a blip at the end

Are You A "Smackdown Genius"?
============================
The WWE has plugged itself as "unpredictable", where "anything can happen". Yet despite these statements, more and more people are claiming that they know what will happen: they can predict a "ref bump", or a
"run in", and thus counter the WWE's claim of "unpredictability". So is the WWE Predictable? Can you predict what will happen on WWE's shows? Put it to the test.
I created a game a while back on the forums I visit, called "Raw Genius". Each week members of the forum would place ten predictions about happenings in the show, along with how many matches there would be and the first and last wrestler on TV. I would then total these scores following the edition of Raw, and each week we'd crown a "Raw Genius" along with a continously running league table to crown a "Super Raw Genius". Now I've decided to take the game and promote it on a much larger scale, and, of course, concentrate on Smackdown. Here's the rules...
SMACKDOWN GENIUS RULES!
1. Each entrant must place ten event "predictions", alongside one "First wrestler to appear on TV" prediction, one "Last wrestler to appear on TV" prediction and one "Number of Matches" prediction.
2i. 10 points will be awarded for correctly predicting the "First wrestler to appear on TV".
2ii. 10 points will be awarded for correctly predicting the "Last wrestler to appear on TV".
2iii. 10 points will also be awarded for correctly prediction the "Number of Matches."
4. The scores (which are out of a possible 85) will be presented each week by myself in this report.
5. As an incentive the current leader of the "Super Smackdown Genius" will have their name posted in the "Report subject".
6. Entries must emailed to me at rikbone@gmail.com before Midnight Monday/Tuesday Morning. Any late predictions will not be accepted due to Spoilers. Also, Smackdown Genius will not occur on the weeks that the WWE run Supershows.
7. The number of matches is determined by the WWE's summary on the webpage: http://www.wwe.com/shows/smackdown . At the bottom of the page they have quick results. This will determine whether segments like Bikini Contests and Arm Wrestles count as matches or not.
8. Subrules for Prediction making is as followed.
- Simple predictions take the following form: "Kurt Angle will wrestle and win", "Daivari will cut a promo plugging Khali", "JBL will wrestle Chris Benoit and win".
- You can not "predict" said WWE announcements. For example, if WWE announces that it will be JBL v Chris Benoit the previous week, you can not "predict" it. You can, however, predict a winner of this match, such as "JBL will wrestle Chris Benoit and win".
- "Predictions" must be definite, and not general. Predictions not allowed include "Kurt Angle will wrestle", "Rey will wrestle either Mercury or Nitro" or "Daivari will cut a promo". If you predict that a wrestle will compete, give a verdict on the match. If you predict that a wrestler will compete against someone, only put one name. If you predict that a wrestler will cut a promo, state the subject of the promo.
- You can't predict anything completely obvious, such as "Burchill will enter swinging from a rope".
9. I will send an email back to people who contain an unallowed prediction(s).
10. My word is final. Enjoy!
