The ECW eXperience 5.01.07
Posted by J.D. Dunn on 05.03.2007

ECW on Sci-Fi
by J.D. Dunn

May 1, 2007

  • Live from Birmingham, Ala.

  • Your hosts are Joey Styles and Taz.

  • Bobby Lashley promises to beat up Vince McMahon for stealing his title. Armando Alejandro Estrada rolls himself out and says if Bobby touches Vince, he loses his title rematch. He also lists the people that Lashley cannot touch if he wants that rematch – Shane McMahon, Vince McMahon, Umaga, Rod Flanders, Tod Flanders. That is all. Oops. Bobby takes it out on Armando instead.

  • Elijah Burke lays down the law to the existing members of the New Breed.

  • CM Punk vs. Kevin Thorn (w/Ariel).
Burke assigns Thorn to take out Punk, but it's clear he didn't run that by Thorn first. It works fine early as Thorn catches Punk in mid-air and powerslams him. Punk gets his feet up to block a pump-splash, though, and finishes with the Go2Sleep at 1:50. Well, that was a squash. 3/4*

  • WWE.com got thoughts from the ECW Originals.

  • Extreme Exposé dances to "Cherry Pie." Always a classic.

  • In the back, Thorn is pissed that no one had his back. Burke rightly points out that Thorn was the one who lost. Thorn leaves in a huff and quits the group.

  • Marcus Cor Von & Matt Stiker (w/Elijah Burke) vs. The Majors Brothers.
The Majors Bros. are Brian and Brent. They look like Mr. Belding's irresponsible brother from Saved by the Bell. Local boys, I'm sure. They do okay against Striker, but Cor Von tags in and kills them with power moves. Brian nearly gets the win with a sunset flip as Brian drags the Alpha Male to the floor. Brian catches Striker with the crossbody for the huge upset win at 3:47. The New Breed is collapsing before our very eyes. Burke reads Striker the riot act after the loss. *1/4

  • ECW Champ Vince McMahon comes out to give the ECW Originals a free shot. Once they're out there, though, he makes a fatal four-way match to determine a #1 contender for next week.

  • #1 Contender, Extreme Rules, Fatal Four-Way: Rob Van Dam vs. Tommy Dreamer vs. The Sandman vs. Sabu.
They start with an awkward series of roll-ups. Vince leads the crowd in a "we want tables" chant as Van Dam smashes Dreamer with a chair. RVD and Sabu team up for Rolling Thunder on Dreamer, but Sabu double-crosses Dreamer on a Poetry in Motion attempt. Hey, they should do RVD and Sabu versus the Hardyz while they have a chance. Van Dam knocks Dreamer to the floor but stops to pose and gets wiped out by Sabu. Sandman bulldogs Dreamer on a trash can. Dreamer gets revenge with the tree-of-woe chair-assisted dropkick. Now it's Van Dam double-crossing Sabu with a backdrop suplex instead of the double legdrop. Dreamer wakes up and gives RVD a piledriver. Sandman adds a couple of cane shots but takes the triple-jump moonsault. Sabu puts Sandman on a table and goes up, but Dreamer recovers and superplexes him onto Sandman, putting them all through the table. Van Dam is the only one conscious at that point, so he finishes the Sandman with the Five-Star Frogsplash at 6:19. So, it's Van Dam versus McMahon next week, presumably to bury Van Dam on his way out. **1/2

The Extreme 411: The mark in me loved seeing the heel New Breed falling apart, but the smark in me knows it ain't over yet. Whatever they were going for with Punk seems to have backfired because it seemed last week like he was assuming Elijah's spot with the crowd turning on him, but this week he was out of the group. If they want the fans to react a certain way, they have to be more clear with what their intentions are. As far as RVD vs. McMahon. Well, we'll jump off that bridge when we come to it.
