The Tremendous Tirade: ECW on SCI-FI 2.26.08
Posted by Brad Borchardt on 02.26.2008
A new #1 Contender for the ECW Championship is crowned, Stevie Richards and Kofi Kingston try to continue their winning ways, and the WWE Tag Team Champions are in action!
Welcome to the Tremendous Tirade: ECW on Sci Fi report. This is Brad Borchardt from the Smackdown Report filling in for Larry this week. No fancy black backgrounds or logos, just some extreme wrestling tonight!
Before we start Joey Styles and Tazz announce a Triple Threat Match between CM Punk, Elijah Burke, and Shelton Benjamin for the #1 Contendership for the ECW Championship. Gee, one guy has been jobbing for months, one guy is in Money in the Bank, and the other guy is the top face of ECW. Gee, I wonder who is going to win that one.
Match #1: Kelly Kelly and Kofi Kingston vs. Layla and Santino Marella
I'm actually a big fan of Kofi and when making my WrestleMania card a few weeks ago, had him in Money in the Bank. This is also his first non-squash match. Layla and Kelly start but Layla tags Santino right away and he gets nailed with a double dropkick from Kelly and Kofi. Kofi mounts him in the corner and nails a few hooks. Santino rolls out of the ring and hangs Kofi out to dry on the ropes. Santino goes back in the ring and nails a leg sweep. Whip to the corner by Santino and then a shoulder thrust. Santino locks in a modified arm bar but Kofi counters into a roll up for two. Santino jumps on Kofi but Kofi fires back with some shots. Tag to Layla and she goes to slap Kofi but he blocks it and Kelly takes her down since she is actually legal. Boot to Layla and a top rope cross body for two. Santino runs in and Kofi takes him down. Face Buster to Layla from Kelly and that is all she wrote.
Winners: Kelly Kelly and Kofi Kingston via pin fall on Layla by Kelly
- Not a bad effort from all involved and now that Kofi is actually in a non-squash match, it seemed like the fans were into it.
We get a video package of Maria and her Playboy stuff. Maria and Candice Michelle vs. Beth Phoenix and Melina at WrestleMania. Oh boy. God forbid we actually defend the WWE Women's Championship or anything.

WrestleMania XXIV is only 33 Days Away!
Match #2: Mike Knox vs. Stevie Richards
Wow. I do ECW this week and Mike Knox is on the show. I owe you all an apology. They lock up and Knox gets Stevie in the corner and goes right after the neck. He chokes Richards but Stevie fights back with some kicks. Knox comes back though and hangs Stevie's neck on the ropes. Knox works on the neck more and eventually locks in a sleeper hold. Stevie "Stevies" up but Knox knocks him down. Haha. Knox knock joke. Anyway, Knox drops a leg drop for a two count. Knox back to a chokehold now but Stevie gets out and nails some stiff kicks. He goes for the Stevie T but Knox whips him in the corner. Knox misses the splash in the corner and Stevie nails two of his own. Stevie T by Richards and he picks up the pin fall.
Winner: Stevie Richards via pin fall
- Mike Knox actually held his own and the Stevie Richards story is fun. The crowd seems into Stevie and it would make a nice story if he actually gets some sort of ECW Championship run out of this.
In the back, Tommy Dreamer is giving a pep talk to Colin Delaney. Colin asks him that when he eventually wins a championship, will he get his own theme music. Dreamer just stares him down. Priceless.

Match #3: Colin Delaney and Tommy Dreamer vs. WWE Tag Team Champions John Morrison and Miz (non title)
Dreamer and Miz kick it off. Lock up to start and Dreamer knocks him down. Scoop slam to Miz and then an arm drag takedown. Miz gets away and tags Morrison. Arm drag by Dreamer but Morrison nails an uppercut. Dreamer back into it as he nails a suplex and tags Colin who nails a senton over the ropes and a dropkick for two. Morrison jumps him and nails some rights. Tag to Miz and he kicks away at Colin. He takes him down by the hair and locks in a chin lock on Colin. Tag to Morrison and they get some great double-teaming. Morrison nails him with a few jabs and tags Miz. Miz nails a snap mare and then clubs Colin in the back of the head. He goes to suplex Colin but he lands behind Miz and tags Dreamer. Dreamer goes to town on Miz and nails a huge bulldog. Tree of Woe to Miz and he nails the dropkick. Reverse DDT to Miz and takes Morrison out. Miz goes for the Reality Check but Dreamer pushes him into Colin and nails the DDT for the win.
Winners: Colin Delaney and Tommy Dreamer via pin fall on Miz by Dreamer
- Colin had some moves….I believe two. I like the story here but might be a little to repetitive of the Cactus Jack/Whipwreck stuff. I also think there are better teams like Jesse and Festus, Ryder and Hawkins, and Yang and Moore who deserve a shot. It's still a fun storyline and I'm glad Colin got a contract this week.

We get footage of the WrestleMania press conference.
Miz and Morrison are bickering in the back about their loss. The hot Asian announcer comes in and tells them that next week there will be a rematch next week…..for the WWE Tag Team Championship!

ECW Champion Chavo Guerrero comes out for the main event!
Match #4: CM Punk vs. Elijah Burke vs. Shelton Benjamin for the #1 Contendership for the ECW Championship
Benjamin blindsides Burke with a huge kick in the face leaving him and Punk. They lock up and Benjamin knocks him down. Punk comes back with a huge flying heel kick. Benjamin gets taken down by Burke but Punk slams Burke down. Burke slams Punk into the corner and gets some shoulder thrusts. Elijah pounds on Punk but Punk comes back and drops Burke almost on his head. Punk nails Burke with the Running Flatliner and gets a two count. Burke was supposed to pull Benjamin off but it looks like the ref just stopped counting. This match seems a little sloppy in spots. We go to commercial.

We're back with Punk getting a two count on Burke. He goes to suplex Burke out of the ring but Shelton flips over both men and nails Punk with a sunset flip to the outside. Pretty sweet. Benjamin rolls Punk back in and Burke dropkicks Benjamin out. Outer Limits elbow by Burke but Benjamin runs in and pounds away on Burke. Knee to the gut by Benjamin but Burke nails an uppercut and leaps on Benjamin in the ropes. Burke goes to the top but Punk distracts him and Benjamin nails the running top rope suplex for two. Punk and Benjamin go at it and Benjamin nails a huge heel kick. Punk fights back and nails the running knee on Benjamin but Burke nails a dropkick to the back of the head of Punk. Burke gets a two count on Punk. Elijah and Benjamin keep reversing each other until Burke knocks Benjamin out of the ring. Punk sneaks in and nails the Go To Sleep on Burke for the win. After the match, Chavo hits the ring and he has a stare down with Punk.
Winner: CM Punk via pin fall on Elijah Burke
- Great match for the main event. A bit sloppy at times, but it was non-stop action and Benjamin looked like a million bucks out there going into Money in the Bank. Burke looked pretty good as well and Punk was his usual self. Like I said, take the sloppiness away, add ten more minutes, and put it on WrestleMania as the ECW Championship Match and you would have a winner.
One of their better shows in quite some time. Well Larry should be back next week. Just for a cheap plug, read the Smackdown Report this Friday! Good night everybody!
Sure does seem to be a lot of "nail"ing going on in ECW these days.

I am very impressed with Kofi Kingston. I think he has alot of potential but isn't main event material. This is why I believe they need to bring back the TV Title. This will add depth to the ECW storylines and make the matches more meaningful to watch. Kingston would be a great candidate for a title run for a TV title.
Also, Stevie Richards needs to bring back to Stevie Kick and also deserves a title run. I see it coming as well. ECW is finally becoming more competitive and I see it beating TNA in the long run. But that is up to ECW creative.

Stevie can't use the Stevie kick because his name isn't Shawn Michaels.

I was really dissapointed in ECW, this week. I watched it since there wasn't a new episode of Boston Legal on.
The opening match, Kofi just isn't doing enough for me to care about him, and Santino only carries so much weight. And as for generic blonde and her arch nemesis, bleh.
This was actually the first time I've caught Mike Knox wrestle. And I thought the match was way to long. I also miss the Stevie Kick, though I understand it's better to use Cactus Jack's finisher than Shawn Michaels.
I enjoyed the tag match. I don't think I need to elaborate.
But the main even, oi. I like all three guys involved, but they weren't anywhere near the same page. Prior to the commercial break, it was like Punk and Burke were trying to have two different matches. And everyone's timing was off, I just felt it was a terribly dissapointing display.
Just very sad.

Main event was pretty good. I am truly shocked that Punk came out on top in a match that Elijah Burke was in :|. I hope they're dating as much as Punk bends him over

Very nice pickup by the first commenter, 22 uses of "nail" in the column. I didn't even notice, although I was skimming most of the play by play. May want to look into a thesaurus Brad. I kid, I kid. Just as long as you don't start using "He creamed him!" TM Don West

first off, lots of people use the superkick. it's not like shawn michaels is blackballing anybody.
second off, the stevie t is not a ripoff of mic foley's finisher. lot's of people have the same finisher, damn.

And isn't Stevie's an Implant style one, where he lifts the guy up before he drops the D-A DDT? That would make it different from Foley's.

Looked like a Double Arm DDT to me.
And I was pointing out how the relative incongruities in who gets to have similar finishers.
