411's WWE Smackdown Report 4.18.08
Posted by Brad Borchardt on 04.18.2008

We kick the show off tonight with Chris Jericho and his Special Edition Smackdown Highlight Reel. Jericho informs the fans he will offically be the special guest referee at Backlash for Shawn Michaels vs. his guest on the Highlight Reel tonight….Batista! Out comes Batista and Jericho wishes him luck against Undertaker tonight. He also wanted to talk about Shawn Michaels and Jericho says he is right when he said Michaels is a phony and enjoyed retiring Ric Flair. Jericho says by hitting him with Sweet Chin Music, he basically agreed. Batista tells Jericho that he never asked him to speak on his behalf and he will confront his problems. Batista does not want Jericho getting into his buisness and does not want to deal with Jericho as referee at Backlash. Jericho says he never asked to be referee but he is anyway. He also finds it odd that Batista is so upset about Flair retiring. Jericho acuses Batista wanting to be the man who retired Flair so he could get the passing of the torch. Jericho brings up their past and says it must of hurt Batista that Flair picked Michaels over him. Jericho saw the emotion between Flair and HBK during Flair's retirment ceremony and says Batista was too "cool" to show his emotion that night. He asks the audience if Batista wanted to retire Flair himself and other questions about Batista being selfish causing Batista to nail the Batista Bomb on Jericho!

We're back and out comes Matt Hardy for some special commentary!

Match #1: WWE United States Champion MVP vs. Tommy Dreamer (ECW) (non title)

MVP mocks Dreamer to begin the match so Dreamer shoves him. Dreamer hit a few shots and then a couple of arm drags. Dreamer tries to lock on an armbar but MVP gets to the ropes. Dreamer argues with the ref so MVP hangs Dreamer out to dry on the ropes. Reverse neckbreaker by MVP for two and then a few kicks to the back. MVP drags Dreamer to the ropes and catipults him into the ropes. Snapmare takedown and a chin lock by MVP but Dreamer gets out and hits a few rights. MVP fights back and hits the running big boot for a two count. MVP locks in a modified abdominal stretch and then a face buster with the knee. BALLIN' elbow drop by MVP for two. I think it's been a while since he did that. MVP goes to the top but Dreamer meets him on the way down and hits a few clothesline and a bulldog. Dreamer hits a swinging neckbreaker for two. MVP gets back on track with some elbows but Dreamer counters the Playmaker with a DDT! One….two...MVP grabs the bottom rope before the three. Dreamer goes for the Dreamer Driver but MVP shoves him into the turnbuckle and hits another running big boot for the win.*1/2 Nothing special but nothing bad either. Just there to give Hardy his chance at commentary and help make MVP look strong for Backlash.

Winner: MVP via pin fall

In the back, Finlay is getting Hornswoggle ready for his match.

-Commercial-

Match #2: Hornswoggle w/Finlay vs. Matt Striker

Horny pulls out some tennis balls and juggles them…then whips them at Striker. Finlay trips Striker and Horny hits a dropkick. Horny starts squirting Striker with some water guns. Everytime Striker breaks one, Finlay gets Horny another. Striker then attacks Finlay but Finlay fights back as Horny distracts the ref. Finlay throws Horny at Striker but Striker finally shoves down Horny. He starts slapping Hornswoggle and stomps him. Striker grabs the shillelagh but the ref stops him. The ref gets rid of it, Finlay rolls in, and hits Striker with a different shillleagh. Hornswoggle hits the Tadpole Splash for the win! 1/2* Well the crowd was into it so I'll give them that. Same fun as last week but I hope Finlay gets some sort of push after Backlash. Watching this, I doubt it.

Winner: Hornswoggle via pinfall

They show footage of Great Khali's peace offering to Big Show and Show taking him down. Big Show says he isn't interested in making peace with Khali. At Backlash, he will finish what he started. Tonight, Mark Henry is going to need all his strength to take him out.

-Commercial-

Match #3: Chavo Guerrero (ECW) w/ Bam Neely vs. Jaime Noble

They lock up and Chavo gets a wasite lock. Noble counters with a take down but Chavo counters back with a side headlock. Chavo hits a headlock takedown but Noble fights back with an arm drag and a wrist lock. Chavo gets to the ropes but then Noble gets a roll up for two. Another pin by Noble for two. Chavo hits a Gory Bomb on Noble into the ropes and then choke him with the bottom rope. Chavo locks in a modified arm bar and then a knee to the gut as soon as Noble broke the hold. Chavo gets a chin lock but releases to get a few shots. Chavo reapplies the chin lock until Noble gets to his feet and hits a back body drop. Noble gets a few forearm smashes and a NORTHERN LIGHTS SUPLEX! Love that move. Noble gets some knees to the head of Chavo but misses a running knee. Chavo hits the Two Out of Three Amigos as Noble couters the third into a swinging neckbreaker for two. Noble goes for a Texas Cloverleaf butChavo kicks him away. Chavo hangs Nobleoff the ropes and hits the Frog Splash for the win. *3/4 It was a decent match, but a disapointment considering who was in the ring. Also, if Chavo had this much trouble with Noble, who is going to think he can beat Kane?

Winner: Chavo Guerrero via pin fall

After the match, Bam Neely hits a full nelson slam on Noble and Cole and Coachman are devasted. Ok. I mean, yeah, it could of hurt….but it isn't something that Kane hasn't kicked out of before or anything.

-Commercial-

Match #4: Big Show vs. Mark Henry

Both men lock up and it's a stalemate. They do it again and same result. Henry and Show then exchange shots and headbuts. Clothesline by Show and a few jabs/ He gets Henry in the corner and nails a big chop. Henry picks up the Big Show and locks in a bearhug! Show is able to break it after a minute or so and hit a big boot. Chokeslam to Henry but Khali comes out and he hits Show with a chop. Khali shoves Show into the steps. He rolls Show in the ring and locks in a shoulder version of the Khali Vice Grip and then hits a Khali Bomb! Khali walks away and taunts Big Show. 1/4* Nothing really there or entertaining but a match with those two for that amount of time has no right being good.

Winner: Big Show via disqualification

-Commercial-

Match #5: Cherry w/Michelle McCool vs. Victoria w/ Natalya Neidhart

Victoria shoves Cherry down and then gets a headlock takedown. Victoria dominates Cherry. Cherry tries to fight back but Victoria catches a kick and hits a clothesline. Victoria misses with a charge and Cherry gets a roll up for two. Victoria locks in a camel clutch. Victoria slams Cherry around but McCool distracts Victoria and Cherry gets a roll up out of nowhere for the win! 1/2* Victoria dominated but Cherry showed shades of ability (not too much) but I have heard good things about her in the indy scene.

-Commercial-

Match #6: Leroy Kecave? Vs. Vladmir Kozlov

I have no idea about the jobber name. My bad. Vlad takes Leroy down with a big arm drag and then hits a fireman's carry. Armbar by Vladimir and then a big running shoulder block. Vlad slams him into the turnbuckle but Leroy gets a few uppercuts. Vlad rams his head into Leroy's gut and nails an over head belly to belly. Big stomp by Vladimir and reverse DDT for the win. ¼* Nothing really there. The reverse DDT does not look devastating as Cole make it sound. Sorry, still not buying him.

-Commercial-

Match #7: Batista vs. WWE World Heavyweight Champion Undertaker (non title)

Edge and the Edgeheads are watching from ringside. Taker and Batista lock up and Taker gets some jabs. Batista hits an Irish whip (HE's NOT EVEN FINLAY) but Taker hits a clothesline. Batista battles back with some shoulder thrusts. Batista hits a high elbow for two. Taker out of nowhere gets the running DDT and then works on the shoulder of Batista. He slams the shoulder into the turnbuckle and then Taker beats down Batista in the corner. Batista counters Old School and hits a clothesline for two. They both run off the ropes and hit each other with clotheslines as we go to commercial.

-Commercial-

We're back with Batista and Taker fighting on the top rope. Batista hits a superplex for two. Taker gets a choke hold right after the count and then a few headbuts. Old School by Taker and then Taker works on Batista off the ring apron. Taker goes for a Tombstone but Batista falls back and hits a Spear for two. Both men get to their feet and brawl outside the ring until the ref counts both men out. They continue to brawl despite the match being over. Taker attacks Edge and then Hawkins and Ryder jump both men. Taker and Batista take them out and brawl with each other. Edge then is in the ring with both Taker and Batista. Taker and Batista takes out the Edgeheads and then Chavo and Bam hit the ring and get destroyed as Edge leaves. Vicky comes out and then punishes both Taker and Batista for attacking Edge, Ryder and Hawkins as they were just fans tonight. So Vicky announces that both men will have a rematch next week for the World Heavyweight Championship! ** Not bad but again, not enough time and we got the bullshit ending. Overall, not a great show tonight.

Sorry about the lackluster review, I was an hour late in my traveling and have to be somewhere else as well. Everything with points will be updated next week. Have a good week everybody!

Let me just preface this by saying The Coacj is a great, great man.

Mow, moving on to my main point, is there anyone out there who doesn't agree with me in that Mary Henry is just a delicious mountain if yummy?

The show itself was ok, it really wasn't on the caliber of anything Carlito has done, but it was close enough.

Let's another fun jaunt with
cena and Big Mark, tha would be such a hot showdown, that I'd love to watch, or take part in.

Off to grab some grilled cheese sandwiches.

Batista vs Undertaker is always a good match, it's sad how overdone it is though. I mean serious that match should be saved for the big four PPVs because they guys are that big of stars and have that kind of chemistry.

Cherry getting a women's division push is okay. but wouldn't it be better to actually see a skit backstage about Cherry getting abandoned by her brother and BF? and will this lead to anything or are we just going to end up with them severing their relationships silently?

Okay, I hate Darth Mortis and all, but that guy posting as him needs to get a life.

Posted By: JJ (Guest)  on April 18, 2008 at 10:59 PM

JJ can get a life, as there's no love lost on this end either. You see, you make your "sarcastic" little remarks trying to be "edgey" and oh so clever. However, the problem that arises is that you're really none of the things listed above.

Please, go back you your sad, sad existance.

If you're not down with thaat, I have two words for ya...

Carlito's HOT!

Two issues I had with this show. Kozlov's problem is that he isn't doing anything to attract people's attention. When superstars like Mr. Kenndy and MVP made their debut, they have somethong ( a cool enterance) that made th fans take notice. Everything about the man says "bush league"

Also, what happened to Finlay's push?

God this show sucked!.Not even a free ppv match could save it. Come On Michael Hayes your better than this!

Posted By: Danny P (Guest)  on April 19, 2008 at 12:25 AM

Actually, and I guess I'm in the minority, but I like what they're doing with Kozlov. He feels like a throwback to the golden days when nobody had music and heels would just go and whup a jobber just cuz.

Mortis, I was being serious. I've also had other people make silly posts under my name and it was fucking annoying, so I don't do it to other people.

Doesn't Bam Neely remind anyone of The Wall a.k.a. Malice

Posted By: max (Guest)  on April 19, 2008 at 01:31 AM

I have to disagree with Koslov comments: The fact he comes to the ring to a spotlight, no music and no Tron is like the days of old and adds more legitimacy to him being there to fight and not there to show off and entertain. However, I miss the torture rack into a forward dump pin he did on Bentley as his finisher.

Far as the show goes, it practically put me to sleep. UT/Batista, seriously, a good match? Overused, overdone, and its just more excuses to keep BIG DAVE in the title picture because of who he knows backstage. The guy put on the most disappointing match at WM 24, lets not buy into the Cole hype over "the rivalry that captured the entire world" bull. I'd rather see UT/Edge anyday of the week, rather than UT/Batista part ten billion and five. I agree about the silent ending relationship stuff, the show is totally disjointed and the announcers sound like oafs out there. When the highlight on commentary is Coach talking about a climax and how Michael Cole will never have one, that's.. sad.

Seriously, is Tony Schiavone really that busy? I never thought I'd say it but after listening to these two idiots the last few weeks I'd rather hear Tony again!

Can someone explain the logic of Vicki Guerrero giving a title shot to Batista two days before her guy gets the shot thus putting in danger Edges title shot even if Edge gets involved a little bit of a risk isn't it.

Posted By: what the? (Guest)  on April 19, 2008 at 02:02 AM

I believe that the point of Vicky booking the title match next week is to insure that Batista and Taker will destroy each other rather then fight to a count out this week in sake of winning the championship. I'm sure that match next week will be a draw or dq with Edge and his posse making the attack.

I'm really enjoying the progression Koslov is making. I love the no-tron, no-theme idea for him. It just works. He's cold and calculating. 'Nuff said.

JJ and Darth (the real one), I share your pain.

man some of you guys are watching something I am not. the show was no wrestlemania but it was fine. they are building the show khali thing. for better or worae it is going to happen. they are at least trying to make it something. I can here some of you now if this was not happening "no build to it...just thrown together. "khali is leaving hopefuly they will have a good kayfabe story why.

I sm into this stuff with jericho. back to heel jericho is a good thing. hopefully we get the neeeeeever....eeeeevvvver stuff back

I agree with the 2 guys defending kozlov. they are building to something. not all wrestling has to be pretty. when was a kane match pretty? Kozlovis being made to b
e a baaaad man. lots of options
with this guy. finley, kane, umaga and some of the other big guys.

and brad next time you don't have time and your pmsing about the things pass the update to somebody else I mean GEEZ. What a happy guy.

Finally Darth..errr..not so Darth...err want to be Darth... OK I am confused. ANYWAY, ask yourself a question WHY

Darth Mortis, you are not as funny as you try to be. You are like a wrestling fan's version of Michael Cole.

Is Bam Neely basically Bull Buchanan v2.0?

Posted By: me (Guest)  on April 19, 2008 at 07:23 AM

is it just me who thinks that the title match next week is just a waste of time...
Batista is already fighting HBK at Backlash, so I'm guessing that there isnt much chance of him winning the match next week, otherwise he would ave to fight Edge at backlash as well.
So I'm just gna go out on a limb here and say that Taker wil win the match on fri or it wil be DQ.

Also, on a side note, Vicki annoys the hell out of me...

About a week ago, somebody said who would get there first theme song between Colin and Vladmir Kozlov. Well when Houston hosted Smack Down last year Vladmir had a theme song that was in Russian and had a titantron as well. So who ever posted that question last week, there is your answer.

Posted By: WWE fan (Guest)  on April 19, 2008 at 09:47 AM

I forgot to say that Vladmir match was a dark match.

I've been begging and pleading for them to get Vicky off my TV screen. Her voice is so annoying and this angle with Edge and her is about as believable as myself and Mariah Carey. I don't mind her having a job with the company but does she have to appear on tv.

Also is it me or does "Vintage Undertaker" sound like a clothing line Amy Lee from Evanescence would wear? Cole, stop using that! NO SOUP FOR YOU!

And I'm not posting under that shit name either. It was funny the first time or so but give the little canadian bastard some slack since the gibberish comments the real mortis posts are top-notch, top-notch. If I were to guess I bet its that little mischeivious MP. We are the Chosen 3 here. The stable of Scrotum Pole, JJ, and MP. So bring that homo love of WWE up and watch it get smacked right back in your face.

I'm calling it now.. Batista's gonna eat a super kick next week.

Posted By: Jamal (Guest)  on April 19, 2008 at 11:42 AM

Vicki did say that the winner of the title match would get defend against Edge at Backlash. Of course, the real hole in that booking from a kayfabe perspective is that Batista already has a match with Michaels at the ppv. Obviously, we all know that Batista has no chance of taking the title off Taker 2 days before the ppv (this not being 98-99 WWF under Russo or 2000 WCW under Russo), but for the fans out there who may think he has a chance, Vicki should have said that if Batista wins, he still must face Michaels at Backlash, and then defend the title against Edge later in the show. One thing I liked was that after Taker pulled Edge over the barricade, UT and Batista didn't just immediately pair up to fend off the three heels. They still kept throwing punches at each other, at least until they had Edge cornered in the ring. That shows that just because they are both faces, they still have an intense rivalry that has gone on for over a year, and I'm sure Batista is thrilled to be getting a title shot next week, as opposed to when Kane and UT didn't really want to fight each other. One more nice touch in the final segment was Vicki claiming that they opened the company up to a huge lawsuit by attacking fans in the front row and pulling them over the barricade. (well, Edge at least was pulled over) Okay, I'm done now.

Darth Mortis:

Do us all a favor and quit posting you fag. Go take your useless ass somewhere else. Smackdown was taken off in my area in favor of stupid baseball, but it does not sound like I missed much.

I'm not certain what their doing with Kozlav here other than there was near zero crowd reaction for his match. If they are trying to bore the people to death, excellent job. This was a very very bad show. This is dare I say just Russ-o-riffic bad. I think also Victoria would have more shine in TNA given in the shit gimmick matched is the one the best women's divisions going today. One can dream.

It's not me. I've been a victim of fake MPs too. The other day some guy used my name and said Paul Heyman sucks, the old ECW sucked, and Don West is a god. It was so obvious that I wouldn't say that, I didn't even complain.

Dont tell me we get another Vintage Undertaker comment from staple - stash faggot Michael Cole?

Oh dear somebody will have to surgically remove Cole's permanent Boner of his visions of old skool taker

And what's worse is that someone actually registered under my name and made a post that butchered the english language and praised Hulk Hogan & John Cena and said that ROH sucks. I didn't bother commenting on it though, since most people who post here know how much I hate Cena. And I know that this Darth Mortis is fake because he praises Carlito, even though the real one hates Carito.

Ok, I loved Eddie and wish nothing but the best for his famuly but can we just give Vicki a big payday and send her home already. I mean it has to be pretty bad when wrestling fans notice you are a terrible actor or actress.

Anyone else think this might be the start of a Smackdown fatal four way (taker v batista v hbk v edge w/ guest referee y2j) at backlash? That would be killer.
