411’s TNA Impact Report 4.24.08
Posted by Larry Csonka on 04.24.2008

TNA Impact Begins…NOW!

-Matt Morgan is backstage, walking with Lauren and jumps Kip James. He calls him old man and makes Lauren watch. I fully approve of starting the show each and every week with a Kip James beating.

-We get highlights of last week's show.

-Tenay and West welcome us to the show.

~BOOKER GOT SOMETHING TO SAY~
Booker T makes his way to the ring, and Tenay gets up the back-story from last week. Booker has some stuff to discuss and it is directed towards Sting. He calls him out so that he can get this stuff off of his chest.

Sting politely joins us and Booker says he has to do this. They go way back and have been in wars together, and they even watched a company crumble before their eyes. But they were always there for each other. But it got heated last week and he admits that he disrespected Sting. As a man he has to admit he was wrong and apologizes.

And now James Storm, Miss Jackie and Robert Roode come out. Storm says this is all touching, but he and Roode heard them discussing how they were cool in the 80's. They were there for each other, so they should just get married on TV. STING IS OFFENDED as a Christian. Storm says Sting's make up is perfect and Booker's weave never looked better. Roode says last week they wanted to fight, and they all want to see it. Roode says they are going to fight tonight.

But now Jim Cornette is out and he says HE is the one running the show, not any of them. Cornette gets in the ring and says with all due respect, he is tired of everyone being out for themselves. Since there are no TNA tag champions, he has created the Deuces Wild Tournament. 8 teams, 4 matches and the winners go to Sacrifice. At Sacrifice, he will take 8singles wrestlers and make 4 more teams. And it will be a surprise who tags together. If you don't like the partner, too bad. The winner of the tournament at Sacrifice will be the new tag team champions. As for tonight there will be a fight, it will be Robert Roode and James Storm vs. Booker T and Sting.

-TO THE BACK with JB, who is with AJ. He says the tournament is crap, but he and Tomko will go to Sacrifice and get their titles back. AJ is not worried because he says he and Tomko are the champs and will walk through everyone. AJ is spying at a door and Karen Angle appears! She embarrassed herself at Lockdown, but AJ says she belongs with him. JB asks about Kurt and then promises not to tell him.

Deuces Wild Tag Team Tournament Qualifying Match: Black Reign and Rellik vs. Team 3D (Brother Ray and Brother Devon)

Ray and Rellik lock up to the corner they go and shoulder rams by Rellik. Rights now and then boots follow by Rellik. Off the ropes, reversal and a side slam by Ray gets 2. Tag to Devon, double team suplex on Rellik and a cover for 2. Rellik fights back, tags Reign in and he delivers rights to Devon. Off the ropes and a shoulder block by Devon gets 2. All four men in, Rellik tossed, Reign fights back and Ray and Devon almost collide. They argue and Reign tosses Devon into Ray and we head to a commercial @ 2:20.

We are back from commercial @ 6:20 with Devon getting double-teamed. Rellik goes for a cover and gets 2. Chinlock by Rellik, Devon fights to his feet and then catches a kick, but Rellik spins out and connects anyway and then covers for 2. Rellik up top, Ray grabs him, Devon over and then goes up top and gets a suplerplex. Devon covers for 2 as Reign breaks it up. Tag to Ray and he begins to clean house. Off the ropes and a backdrop to Rellik. Then to Reign. Clotheslines both men now, Irish whip and Ray splashes both. Uranage by Ray on Rellik gets 2! Ray argues, and then goes back to work. Slams Reign, Devon up top…Rellik tosses him off and then nails Ray. A big boot by Rellik gets 2 as Devon makes the save. Ray rolls Reign to the floor, 3D on Rellik and that is all.

Winners: Team 3D @ 9:55 via pin

-After the match 3D stands off but they hug.

-Lauren is with the Knockouts in the dressing room. They all have invitations and they are from Cornette. They bicker and insult each other.

-JB is with Kurt Angle. Angle says he is ready for Joe, knowing that this is his last shot. He never loses to the same man twice. He studied the tape and he knows what he has to do. He will then defend against Rick Steiner. JB says Scott, and Angle then says, "whatever." JB says Karen is here, and he makes JB take him to them.

-Tenay and West discuss the title match later tonight.

-We get a video history of Angle vs. Joe.

-Earlier today they caught up with Joe training. Nash is there, what is he helping with? Nash says the training never stops. Joe is the champ and is not going to let anyone down. Joe says Angle never holds back, and Angle needs to learn that he will be punished and Joe will always better him.

-We get a recap of the TNA Tag Team Title situation.

-Lauren is with Eric Young and Kaz. Eric denies Super Eric and says it is all a rumor. Kaz then says it was hard to forgive him, since he busted his ass to become one half of the TNA Tag Team Champions. Next week they get another shot, and he says not to let him down again. Kaz then says to call Super Eric, get in touch with him and ask him to stay away. Eric agrees.

Deuces Wild Tag Team Tournament Qualifying Match: Christian Cage and Rhino vs. The Motor City Machineguns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin)

Cage and Alex to begin. They trade counters, arm bar by Alex, takedown and a knee to the arm by Alex. Cage rolls out, gets a side headlock but Alex throws him off the ropes, counters, kick by Alex and then Cage counters sliced bread. Unprettier try countered and an elbow by Alex followed by a cross body for 2. Cage gets the arm, tag to Rhino and a wristlock on Alex. He counters, tags Sabin and he maintains control with the arm. Rhino reverses, counters by Sabin and then a sidekick. Off the ropes and a clothesline by Rhino gets 2. Rhino with a belly-to-belly, sets for a gore…misses and to the floor he goes. Sabin up top but Cage tosses him off. Shelley kicks him to the floor, senton dive to both men by Alex and we head to a commercial @ 3:30.

We are back form commercial @ 6:05 as the Guns are in control and Alex covers Rhino for 2. Off the ropes, reversal and a spinebuster by Rhino gets 2. Tag to Cage, he lays the boots to Alex. Snap mare into a chinlock by Cage. Alex fights out, off the ropes and eats a back elbow for 2. Tag to Rhino, Irish whip and a corner shoulder block by Rhino. Tag back to Cage, off the ropes and a powerslam on Alex gets 2. A neck vice applied by Cage, Alex battles back and then gets a sliced bread on Cage. Both men are down, looking for a tag and Sabin in off the tag with a missile dropkick. Kicks to Rhino, backdrop to Cage and then Rhino misses a charge and falls to the floor. Sabin springs in with a clothesline for a close 2.Sidekick by Sabin, cradle shock try, countered and Alex in and now Rhino is back and takes out Alex while Cage gets an Implant DDT for 2. Sabin manages to double DDT Rhino and Cage and covers for 2. Cage set up top, Sabin follows and they fight, Sabin tossed off…FROG SPLASH misses! Rhino gores Alex, unprettier on Sabin and that is all.

Winners: Christian Cage and Rhino @ 11:23 via pin

-The Knockouts walk.

~WHY THE INVITE?~
Cornette is in the ring to make a PPV match, and he calls out all of the knockouts. No Kong or Saeed. He has a special match at Sacrifice for them. He asks if they like makeovers, and says they will have a makeover battle royal. It will be an over the top rope battle royal. When it gets down to 2 women, a ladder gets involved. There will be a contract. The winner gets a title shot against Kong. The runner up will get a makeover, he knows what they like, he watches TV. They will get a Britney Spears makeover, and the runner up will get her head shaved live on PPV!

-TO THE BACK with Lauren, and she has Sting and Booker T with her. Booker says his thoughts are to win. They beat the Road Warriors together, and tonight will be no different. They are living legends, and tonight it will get real ugly. Sting says then brings up that they could be on different teams. Booker says they are all grown up and they are all about winning now.

Robert Roode and James Storm w/Miss Jackie vs. Booker T and Sting

Storm and Booker to begin, Roode distracts Booker and Storm takes control until Booker lands a flying forearm. Chops by Booker, sidekick and a tag to Sting. Rights and boots by Sting, but Storm rushes him to the corner and tags in Roode. Chops by Roode, rights and then talks trash to Booker. Sting fires back now with chops, rights and kicks. Mounted corner shots by Sting, a hip toss and then a dropkick by Sting follows for 2. A tag back to Booker, back elbow to Roode and to the corner they go again for more chops. Roode fights back, Irish whip and then Storm nails an Enziguri to Booker as Roode distracted the ref. A dropkick by Roode and a cover follows for 2. We head to a commercial @ 2:45.

We are back from commercial @ 7:00 with Booker fighting back, but Storm tags in Roode and they double team Booker. Mr. Perfect neck flip by Roode, a leg drop by Storm and then a knee drop by Roode and he covers for 2.Mounted shots by Storm in the corner, he puts his hat on and then bites Booker. Tag to Roode, and he applies a front face lock. Booker fights back, Roode off of the ropes and a spinebuster by Booker levels Roode. Booker manages a tag to Sting, stinger splashes for Roode and Storm. Booker in now and Jackie trips him up, which allows Roode to gets a DDT. Roode up top, Sting over and goes up to get a superplex, but Storm is over and we get a three man tower of doom! Storm and Booker then clothesline each other and everyone is down. Roode tosses Sting to the floor, Storm has a beer bottle and almost hits Storm. They argue now, Sting hits a deathdrop on Storm while wearing a cowboy hat as Booker takes out Roode and that is all.

Winners: Sting and Booker T @ 11:40 via pin

-After the match Storm and Roode argue as Jackie tries to keep them apart.

-JB and Angle walk and they find AJ and Karen. Angle is pissed and asks why Karen is here. Kurt says while there is a Joe and Angle, there cannot be a Kurt and Karen. No, that didn't sound gay at all. AJ gets pissed and Kurt tells him to get Karen out of there.

-Lauren is with Cornette. He is sick of people being spoiled. BACK IN HIS DAY they worked hard and they liked it. He has plans, and knows that they all hate him. Just last week someone stole strawberries from him. But next week he has plans for a special match at Sacrifice. He will sacrifice bodies, careers and maybe lives. He will get even and prove that he is the puppet master. Lauren says he sounds evil, but Cornette says he is a good Christian businessman.

If there will be an 8-team tournament for the tag titles at the PPV, that will make for seven matches. The world title match makes eight, the ladies head-shaving match makes nine and this wacky match will make ten. So nothing will get any time then, ok.

TNA WORLD TITLE MATCH: Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe ©

Angle is wearing some spiffy white sneakers. Lock up, to the corner and Joe breaks. Go behind by Angle, reversal and Angle makes the ropes. Angle grabs a side headlock, off the ropes and Joe levels him with a shoulder block. Angle rolls to the floor to take a powder. Back in, shoulder blocked down and back to the floor goes Angle again. Angle back in, Joe gets a headlock. Off the ropes and Joe KILLS Angle with a clothesline. Headlock takedown by Joe, Angle gets to his feet and to the corner. Rights by Angle, Irish whip and Joe sidesteps Angle, who misses and Joe then gets another headlock takedown. Angle back to his feet and to a corner again. Angle rakes the eyes and then delivers a STIFF uppercut that rocks Joe. Angle charges, Joe moves and Angle slams into the steel post. ELBOW SUICIDA BY JOE! We'll head to a commercial @ 4:30.

We are back from a commercial @ 8:10 with Angle delivering forearms. Joe fights back, knee lariat, senton back splash gets 2. Joe continues the attack with the high knee drop for 2. Rights by Joe, Angle fires back and then gets a release German. Angle works the chinlock, rakes the face of Joe and then back to the chinlock. Elbows by Joe, off the ropes and an overhead belly to belly by Angle! Angle covers and only gets 2. Back to the chinlock goes Angle. Joe fights to his feet, elbows out and then Angle rakes the eyes. Angle charges, but takes the STJOE~! Both men are down and working to their feet. Joe grabs Angle, rights and the ref backs him off. Joe charges Angle, who pulls down the ropes and Joe hits hard and is holding the knee. Angle follows and goes to work on the knee. The ref gets Angle back into the ring and starts the count as we head to a commercial @ 13:50.

We are back from a commercial @ 17:15 and Angle locks in the figure four. During the commercial break Nash and the trainer checked on Joe. Joe works to roll the hold but fails. Joe tries to make the ropes now…struggles… and makes it. Angle didn't want to break the hold, but finally does. He keeps kicking at the knee, and then applies a knee crank. Joe chops out of that, to his feet, they trade rights, Joe in control and an Irish whip, and a spinebuster by Joe gets a close 2. Angle off the ropes and Joe with the snap slam gets 2. Ankle lock by Angle! Joe rolls, escapes and then the Angle slam connects for 2. Angle goes up top now…MOONSAULT MISSES~! LUCHA ROLL by Joe, and he gets the clutch! No, Angle counters into the ankle lock! Joe counters that into the clutch! He has the body scissors…but Angle is close enough to get the ropes. Joe sets Angle up top, counter and then Joe gets an Enziguri…on the ref. REF BUMP! Angle slam on Joe. STRAPS DOWN! Angle drags the ref over, ankle lock applied. Joe kicks Angle off, and Scott Steiner NAILS Angle with a pipe. He's a sneaky bastard. Joe hits some kind of half ass tombstone and that is all.

Winner: Samoa Joe @ 23:10 via pin

-Steiner talks shit to Angle, and then faces off with Joe. Joe shoves him down and before Steiner can attack Cornette is out. He saw what happened and nothing is settled. Everything will be settled at Sacrifice, it will be a three way at Sacrifice: Angle vs. Joe vs. Steiner.

-End scene…

Yay for almost a full hour of wrestling total!

Man, why does TNA insist on re-inventing the wheel at every PPV? Can't they put
on ONE PPV with normal matches? Duece's Wild will be a clusterfuck of epic
    proporstions.

joe vs kurt was 4 stars

Not a bad show at all.Good wrestling and (shock, horror) some decent booking.
Now all they need to do is remember that less is more.

The move Joe won with was the Island Driver. I agree it looked weak though,
maybe because of his selling the knee. But anyway, just wanted to clear that
    up.

Actually Larry 8 people will be formed into 4 teams. That's 3 matches. The
title match is four, the Divas Match is five, and the wacky match is six.

Wow. Everyone who spent money on that there PPV to see Joe vs. Angle wasted
their money. Way to go, TNA.

    In case anyone didn't get the strawberry reference, it's from The Caine Mutiny;
Captain Queeg's obsession with someone stealing strawberries was one of the
signs he was going off his rocker. I guess Cornette's going to be going all
evil on us. I do wish TNA would stop trying to figure out how to create comic
characters, and focus on the wrestling. They gave us some good matches this
week. Too bad nobody in pro wrestling these days has faith in the actual
matches to carry their programming. At least TNA does let their guys go in the
ring, that's one strong point in their favor. And I did like the handshake
between Christian and Shelley after a series of moves; mutual respect is one of
the plusses of a face/face match. I can't think of anything good about a
heel/heel match, so I could have lived without the monsters/3D thing tonight.

GOD THAT Was Russo at his worst.

I mean there was some good wrestling but Matches for the Backlash card just
sound so gimmicky and bad that I couldn't watch.

Also The ANgle Joe match just moved too slow for me.

There was too much time away from the Ring!

    It SUCKED!

I think that "half ass tombstone" was Joe's version of the Island
    driver.

Sooooooo much better than last week. Sane booking and four matches that all got
plenty of time, and every single one was good, with MCMG/Rhino & Cage and
Joe/Angle VI being great. Needs more Curry Man though. :P

Posted By: twf's sdc (Guest)  on April 25, 2008 at 12:27 AM

I kind of like that everyone is getting a chance to be tag team champions.
They're held up...so I think it's a neat idea to let EVERYONE get a crack at
it...not just the usual tag teams. Joe/Angle ruled. Hard to rip on a show
that 1/4 of was a really good match. (And 2 pretty good tag matches on the
undercard) But I'm sure some will anyway.

Posted By: Guest#8121 (Guest)  on April 25, 2008 at 12:37 AM

Yeah, I was like "hey, a lot of decent to good wrestling on Impact tonight.
At least Larry can't bitch about time this week."

Then they continue to come up wih such god-awful stupid gimmicks that it just
runs all good will that the matches put on. Wow...just wow...The Dueces Wild
thing is so convuluted sounding that Jim Cornette, one of THE best promo men in
the business, couldn't make it make sense in his promo.

Posted By: Mark (Guest)  on April 25, 2008 at 12:57 AM

Great episode of Impact. They really picked it up after last week.

What some people need to understand in the midst of all of these gimmick
matches is they are trying to come up with innovative ways to make their title
    situations more important.

Sure some of it winds up as crap (reverse battle royal) but at the end of the
day it beats having (blank) on a pole match. Also, we should appreciate the
fact that they place an emphasis on tag team titles as well.

What are they going to do with the X Division is what interests me. Hopefully
they will begin bringing back the World X Cup next month.

Posted By: Chikara (Guest)  on April 25, 2008 at 12:58 AM

I don't know the last time I said this about TNA, but so far best show of the
week and definantly one of the best televised shows they done all year. There's
still its faults like the confusing stipulations to the tag match and the fact
the Cornette went "evil" I think. But the overall show was great,
especially the in ring work. Heres to hoping more TNA episodes this good.

BTW, Joe vs. Angle was a nice 4 star match and the finish wasn't anything
    insulting.

The Lethal Lottery (what wcw called it)/Strangebed fellows(what WWE called
it)has always been interesting but like with everything else TNA has to
    complicate it

I agree with A.J. Styles that this tag tournament is "crap".

What would have been the problem with a really good AJ & Tomko Vs. LAX
    feud??
    With LAX winning at Sacrifice.

This tournament feels like an excuse so AJ can do the whole shit with
    Kurt/Karen.

Im glad they've added another opponent to the sacrifice world title match, makes
the average wrestling fan want to tune in more often as there is now a 1 in 3
chance of someone retaining/winning the title.

i hope this also means that there will be another opponent for samoa joe
    post-sacrifice

but hell no can they let petey williams take away what's rightfully lethal's!
what about sonjay dutt?? why havent they given him the title? what about
consequences creed and the rest of the x division? why petey williams?

the women's matches are always something to look forward to not its not just
odb kong and kim, i hope this means that someone else gets a title shot toom,
like angelina love, traci brooks, jackie moore, etc

Actually Guest#8252 its an 8 team tournament, 4 teams that qualify and 8 singles
that will be randomly paired up in to 4 teams.

Best part of the Joe/Angle match was Joe kicking Angle's leg out from under him
to break the ankle lock, and Angle falls right into the clutch. Excellent
    counter.

The bad part is that we're starting to slowly see the return of idiot Angle,
with the story being AJ and Karen basically screwing behind his back and
everyone knowing but him. This will lead to Angle vs AJ, which has
possibilities for awesomeness, but that it has to be accompanied by a
    ridiculous storyline weighs it down.

looks great, iwent to party so ill catch it saturday. The gimmick though is
Sooooooooooo stupid. Why not have the fallout or backlash (sound familiar?)
from Lockdown be the base of your ppv.

Posted By: Mr1700 (Guest)  on April 25, 2008 at 10:47 AM

TNA at it's TNAist. Ass backwards booking and great wrestling. Much like late
WCW you get the feeling stuff is succeeding despite the booking rather than
because of it. Much like WCW you've just had Wargames and now it's time for the
Lethal Lottery and the Crockett Cup. If Cornette reveals the wacky match as
World War III or the Thundercage...

Posted By: BlueMeanieUK (Guest)  on April 25, 2008 at 10:50 AM

I was on Gerweck.net reading Starman's review of Impact. He made this point and
i have to agree, we got 4 matches that were each given a decent amount of time
to develop. Now, can we all agree that 4 matches (given the time to develop
and become actual wrestling contests and not stupid run in quick rollup finish
matches) is better than 6 matches of quick mayhem. I thought the wrestling
    really shined through.

And to everyone bashing this show and calling it "Russo-Riffic"
because of the announcements of the tournament and the battle royal, get your
head out of your asses. Sacrifice is not one of TNA's biggest ppvs. Yet with
each match that was announced, there is intrigue. I like that there is going
to be a mix of established and random tag teams in the tournament. We get the
opportunity to see if certain people can work together to make things work.
Everyone says established tag teams are better, well now we get to test this
hypothesis. We get to see a knockouts head shaved bald AND we get to see the
knockouts battle it out in a ladder match. Something that hasn't been seen on
wrestling television...well...ever. And there promises to be a new match that
involves steel. What the hell is Jim Cornette talking about??? IDK but I
    can't wait to find out.

Plus, the little teaser that we got between Angle and AJ was good and it didn't
    overshadow the main event.

I must say that I've always felt Don West gets a lot of unneccesary heat. Now
with Mikd Adamle over on ECW, i appreciate Don West that much more. I know
imma get flamed for this, but as a color commentator, he's actually great. And
little by little, he's improved. To the point that this week he and Mike Tenay
made the easy transition of switching roles as color man and play by play. Don
West actually did a pretty damn good job calling the Booker T/Sting vs Robert
Roode/ James Storm match. If you get the opportunity, go back and watch that
match and listen to Don West call the moves. He's no Joey Styles or Jim Ross,
but he held his own. I liked this Impact, the only thing that left me going
wtf, was Matt Morgan's presence at the top of the show. I was expecting it to
continue but he just attacked Kip James and that was it.

So did Joe actually get hurt or was that just a sell-job? When he was on the
floor just before the commercial break, the ref raised his crossed arms
    indicating a real injury.

Other than that, more Curryman & more Roxxi! Woooooooo!

Now, granted, I don't really care because it's a knockouts match that isn't for
the title, but I really hate the way they set up that gimmick match.

    Let's review.
1st place - title shot contract.
    2nd place - head shaved.
    3rd-9th place - no penalty.

Does anyone else see the pitfall of logic here?

Ugh, let's try to think here (which i think is hard for some of the people here,
not necessarily you). TNA's ppv is called Sacrifice. Hence they're trynna go
with the general theme that a Sacrifice must be made to achieve some type of
ultimate goal. Let's go with this theme to sell the ppv instead of just having
the name to have a name. The match is the ultimate risk or reward. Are you
willing to Sacrifice your hair in order to have a 1 in 2 shot of becoming the
number one contender. I like the fact that its set up this way rather than
have all the runners up because A. do you really want all those bald knockouts
and B. it makes it that much riskier to be in the final two.

I cant wait for Angelina Love to have the opportunity, but doesn't take it,
because she wont "sacrifice" her hair.
