The RAWtopsy 8.04.08
Posted by J.D. Dunn on 08.05.2008

WWE Raw
by J.D. Dunn

Guess whose birthday it is!

Well, okay. There's Barack Obama.

But there's someone (or something) else. The Rawtopsy is four years old. Technically, it didn't debut until August 9, but I was picked as the Raw ranter four years ago this week.

Also, in me news, I'm now officially a professor at the University of Colorado. Woo hoo! Dental plan! That might restrict 411 duties, but don't worry, you won't notice because I made sure to stack the video review queue up through the beginning of 2009!

  • August 4, 2008

  • Live from Knoxville, Tenn.

  • Your hosts are Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler.

  • Old Man Adamle and his magnificent bifocals open the show. He compares himself to Ronald Reagan. MR. VOLKOFF, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL! He apologizes to Cole and Lawler and explains he was just trying to inject a little enthusiasm into the show. Ironically, as he talks about enthusiasm, he sounds like Joe Liebermann on a Quaalude. He makes a tag title match between Simply Priceless and Cena/Batista. The fans approve. JBL comes out and bonds with Adamle over their football careers. He asks for a title shot against CM Punk. Chris Jericho runs out and says he deserves a title shot. Mike's all, "Okay, you know what. Handicap match, motherfuckers. You like that, baby? Huh, you like that. Who's your daddy? Call me and I'll get it juicy for ya." So, the gist is, if either JBL or Jericho beat Punk in their 2-on-1 handicap match, they get a title shot. If Punk defeats either one of them, nobody gets a shot. That tips the finish a bit because it can't be the latter. You know what else tips the finish? The WWE selling Summerslam shirts last night that had Punk vs. JBL on them.

  • Intercontinental Title: Kofi Kingston vs. Paul Burchill (w/Katie Lea).
This starts slow and picks up when Kofi does his double-dutch leapfrog and hops into the enemy pummel. Katie provides a distraction long enough for Paul to nail Kofi from behind. Kofi comes back with a dropkick and a springboard crossbody. The Bo-Bo legdrop sets up Trouble in Paradise for the pin at 3:46. Not that I'm complaining about the clean finish, but that seems awfully clean for an unexploited feud. Either Paul pissed someone off, or Katie messed up on interfering for the DQ. After the match, Burchill tries to attack, but Kofi makes his own save. *1/4

  • Mickie James runs down for…

  • WWE Women's Title: Mickie James vs. Katie Lea Burchill.
We JIP to them trading stuff and yet, nothing really happens. Katie binds her with a bow-and-arrow. Capital camerawork, gentlemen! Katie will be glad to know that she's free of vaginal polyps, but probably not that all of America knows it. Mickie slips out into a cover for two. The Mickie DDT finishes at 4:00. 3/4*

  • After the match, Beth Phoenix attacks Mickie from behind and gives her the Wheelbarrow Facebuster. Huh. Santino gives her a congratulatory pat on the butt from behind. Hey, it's sports. That's what you do!

  • In the back, General Manager Adamle connects with Stephanie right as we come back from commercial. Santino and Beth congratulate "Adamale" on becoming GM. That is one mantastic unibrow on Santino. Adamle gives them some bad news: there's only room for one more title match, so they'll have to decide amongst themselves which one of them gets a title shot. Santino decides to throw himself on that particular grenade, but Beth hauls him off and volunteers. Adamle decides to make it a winner-take-all tag match with both the Intercontinental and Women's titles on the line. He also coins the term "Adamle Original" for his booking ideas.

  • Cena profile. I know he's the big draw and all, but the reason for that is that he's already well-known. Punk, Rhodes and Dibiase would be guys who would benefit more from this kind of thing. Hint, hint, Freddie Prinze Jr..

  • In the back, Batista says he just wants the title, and Cena is in his way.

  • Earlier, Jamie Noble made reservations for the waffle house, but Layla shot him down again. Wanna go get some waffles and fuck? ::slap:: What, you don't like waffles?

  • So, tonight, Layla is dancing up a storm. You know, when it's just one person and not a team, it's just sad. William Regal interrupts. Nice watch fob. Jamie Noble runs down to attack Regal for interrupting Layla's dance. That leads to a pull-apart between Regal and Noble. Well, you gotta give Noble points for effort.

  • Handicap Match: CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho & John Bradshaw Layfield.
Adamle pops up on the screen to change the rules. If we don't have a winner in 10 minutes, it turns in to a triple-threat at Summerslam. Punk goes straight at them, but they swarm him and doubleteam the champ. Cole says no one wants a triple-threat because it takes your odds of winning down to 33-percent. Far be it from me to disagree with Cole… well, run with me here anyway. It would only be a 33-percent chance if it were a random drawing, not if it were an event where your performance had an impact on the outcome. Then again, maybe the bookers actually do a random drawing on who will win matches now. It would certainly explain a lot. They wipe out JBL and turn it into Punk and Jericho. Jericho blocks a superplex and gets two off a flying elbow. That sets up an abdominal stretch to kill some time. Jericho hits the Lionsault with less than four minutes remaining, but JBL makes the save. Punk springboards back in and takes out JBL with the flying clothesline. Jericho charges but gets crotched in the corner. Punk nails him with the flying leg kick and bulldogs JBL. GO2SLEEP JBL! ONE, TWO, THR-Jericho makes the save! Punk catches Jericho with the snap powerslam! ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! Punk slingshots Jericho into JBL and rolls him up! ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! Jericho rakes the eyes to get out of the Go2Sleep. WALLS OF JERICHO! JBL makes the save with :30 left. JBL knocks Jericho to the floor, but Jericho snaps his throat on the rope. JBL stumbles back and lands on Punk for the win and the title shot at 9:59. What I like most about wrestling is that it's not at all contrived. Silly finish aside, this ROCKED for a handicap match. Once Punk made his comeback, it was all action. ***1/4

  • Apparently, Raw was the #1 show for males named Cyrus aged 13-30 or something. Okay, so why am I watching a commercial featuring a woman talking about her period?

  • Recap of Shawn Michaels getting his eyeball caved in. Shawn appears via satellite. Shawn says, "For the first time in my life, I'm going to listen to what the doctors say." Huh. You know, I could have sworn that's what he did when he forfeited the WWF Title in 1997. The bottom line is – maybe he'll come back, maybe he won't.

  • Matt Striker (Mike Adamle's illegitimate son) introduces himself (again). Kane interrupts, though, leading to…

  • Kane vs. Matt Striker.
Kane just runs through his usual moveset. The flying clothesline sets up the chokeslam at 1:31. 1/4*

  • Kane explains that he's "in a better place now" and that "'he's' dead." Okay.

  • Recap of one of the best promos of the year between Edge and Mick Foley.

  • John Cena explains what the appeal of Batista is. He also says you can be Mike Adamle, Jack Tunney, or an idiot off the street and still see that Cena vs. Batista draws. Wow, to think, they could have had an idiot off the street as the GM! "My name is Gus. I keep my piss collected in a mason jar, and tonight, in that very ring, you're going one on one with… KANE!"

  • In the back, Kelly Kelly congratulates Adamle on a job well done. Adamle says next week, if Kane doesn't want to show us what's in the bag, he's going to rip Kane's eyeball out and fuck the socket. Then, he's going to steal the bag, shit in the bag, and then wipe his ass with the bag. Mike's hardcore. Okay, he doesn't say all that. But he does say he's going to force Kane to reveal the contents of the bag. Perhaps Marcellus Wallace's soul?

  • World Tag Team Titles: Simply Priceless vs. Batista & John Cena.
See, now I always thought Cena and Batista had a very cool Sting/Luger vibe to them. They can bring back Orton as Flair. I guess that makes Punk Ricky Steamboat, which isn't such a bad thing to be. Cena starts out hot, hitting Dibiase with the bulldog and getting two. Cody tries to sunset flip Batista, but big Dave just hauls him up and tosses him to the corner. Batista misses a charge and posts his own shoulder. That spot is to the WWE as the DDT was to the old ECW. We come back from a break to Cody and Ted working the arm. Dave casually shrugs Cody off and tags in Cena. Cena cleans house on Cody and goes for the FU, but Dibiase blind tags himself in and dropkicks Cena over. Cody adds a DDT, and Ted whips Cena into the steps as the champs regain control. Back in, Cody slaps on the sleeper. Batista gives a half-hearted effort to tag – well, no, that's an insult to Robert Jarvik. Ha ha! Ohhh. What? It's heart humor. Cena makes his own save and slaps Batista to tag him in. Batista destroys Ted as a message to Cena. SPEAR! DEMONBOMB! ONE, TWO, THREE! Cena and Batista become wacky tag champs who don't like each other (14:14). The match seemed okay, although it seemed like most of the champs' offense was during the commercial. **3/4

  • After the match, Cena and Batista take turns posing with their new belts. See, each guy wants to one-up the other, in case you hadn't noticed.

The 411: Using the tag straps as a meaningless prop in the Cena/Batista feud instead of building Cody & Ted is probably a bad idea. It doesn't really add anything. We already know they don't trust each other. We already know they're going to fight. Punk versus JBL should be interesting. It could go either way. Hopefully, JBL does for Punk what Eddy Guerrero tried to do for JBL and nearly kills himself in putting him over. Anyway, fun week for Adamle's first full show - great crowd and strong performances.

Okay guy this guy doesn't like this guy at all, I mean they just don't get along. So we kinda tip that they respect each other, but they can't get along. So we have them wrestle the tag team champs and guess what baby, they win! But guess what, and heres the twist, they have to wrestle each other next week! Tag team champ v. tag team champ!

Uhhh Freddie we've done that before, I mean a few times actually.

Really? I mean can't we just do it again?

Ya I don't see why not, book it.

I think Cole actually said they didn't want a triple threat because that would "lower their odds by 33%". Of course, it would only lower your odds by 17% from 50% to 33% (well, technically by 16.667%) all other things being equal (which, of course, they aren't).

What a smart man CM Punk is. He could've kicked out at the end, but he'd rather take a One on One match instead of a Triple Threat.

Well you also have to look at the hindsight of Them winning the titles back from a team of Batista and Cena.
It's a big feather in their caps if they can have that.

clap clap, why to burry the tag division. For the first time in years we had a interesting team in simply priceless who could help make the tag division mean something. Hopefully Big Dave & Cena lose the belts back to them soon.

The Mick Foley and Edge promo was not THAT good. Just because Mick is on the mic does not automatically make it GOLD.

Anyone who actually thinks they're really going to fully go through with the Batista and Cena match at Summerslam can't possibly watch wrestling.

They'll come out, Adamle will say he's changed his minds and instead are defending their new titles. Easy peesy.

I would have loved to have Punk interviewed after Adamle announced the 10 minute stip. Someone with half a brain (if any of their interviewers qualifies) could have pointed out that if he lasted the 10 minutes he'd have to face both men at Summerslam, and that would mean even if you discount Cole's stupid 33 percent odds theory, you still have the possibility of losing your title without being pinned. Therefore, Punk could simply pick which opponent he wanted to face and allow them to pin him, or even tap out to a headlock or something. Punk could have then said thay yeah, that might be the smartest thing to do to keep his title, but even though he won the title by following Edge's blueprint of being the "Ultimate Opportunist" doesn't mean he was going to be a chickenshit champion like Edge was. No, CM Punk never backs down from a fight, and lays down for no man. Something like this could have really helped raise some people's opinions of Punk, and made him look like a slightly more credible champion than he has been booked as so far, especially since he was then going to be pinned in the match.

HEy JD fyim the best part of the show happened after RAW went off the air as Cena led the crowd singing "Rocky Top"

that ending made me want to puke..."lets play popularity contest with the girls and kids in the crowd for 5 mins and waste everyones time"...totally ass if you ask me...waste of the tag belts once again!

That's Bull that Cena and Batista won the tag team titles!!!! the push that cody and ted had went down the toilet

Posted By: Lino C. (Guest)  on August 05, 2008 at 02:22 AM

God I love Rhodes and Dibiase. Seriously. They're some damn good heels, and can only get better. It made me smile when Rhodes just walked over to Batista, while he was on the apron, and gave a quick, arrogant look just to be an asshole, then dropped a knee on Cena. It's little things like that, that get a guy over and make people want to take watch of EVERYTHING the guy does, not just the big/signature moves that wrestler uses.

And Punk taking the fall on purpose, so that he could get a 1 on 1 match at Summerslam, doesn't really coincide with his whole gimmick. He is always looking for new competition, always looking for bigger and better challenges. Purposely losing to raise his own odds doesn't exactly make sense with what he's going for. If anything, if he didn't win, he'd atleast want to last the time limit so he can say he stood toe-to-toe against two guys and didn't lose. Then without the 10 minute time limit at Summerslam, he'd go out and want to prove that he could beat both of them, no matter how long it took.

And how can anyone hate on an "ADAMALE ORIGINAL"!? That's just amazing, whether it's for good reasons or bad.

Really? The more things change, the more things stay the same. Punk should have have pinned Bradshaw, the ending was cool, just think that the wrong man got pinned. Now we get Bradshaw vs Punk....again for one of the biggest per views of the year? Dibase and Rhodes reminded me so much of Tully and Arn tonight, with Rhodes playing Blanchard and Dibase playing Anderson. I hate when the two feuding people end up tag champs, especially at the expense of a great tag team. Imagine what a win for Rhodes and DIbiase that would have been. They could have moved onto a feud with Cryme Tyme with some momentum. OK Raw bit a couple really bad decicions really put a damper on it for me.

A lot of people seem to have a problem with the ending where they competed for pops, well guess what people were popping so it wasn't a total waste.

And I guess now people are gonna rag on JEricho's tights. First the hair now this. Well I guess wearing longer tights and having hair reminiscent of a hair metal band circa 1986 makes you look so much cooler.

I'm really surprised by the comments about the main event. I've yet to see anyone in the comments section say that they liked the fact the tag team titles were defended in the main event, which seems to be a rarity nowadays. Granted, I wasn't surprised by differing opinions about one issue ("What? Somebody else doesn't like it? NO WAY! That's never happened before in the history of man! EVER!") But from what I've seen, there's so much of the opposite - even going as far as saying Cena & Batista winning is burying the tag team division and it's ruining the momentum of DiBiase/Rhodes.

Granted, like piperfan01 mentioned, I think a win for Simply Priceless would've been big here - especially since (IMO) it would fit with the "anything can happen" atmosphere that's returning lately. That particular outcome wasn't as expected since they were facing a team of main-eventers like Cena and Batista.

I can understand the argument that two singles competitors coming together one time and winning against a formatted tag team that's held the championships for a decent amount of time beforehand seems/is somewhat disprespectful to or hurts the credibility of established tag teams and the whole "chemistry" aspect of tag teams. But what I don't understand is why the whole existance of the championship and division is decided solely on whether or not the tag team champions (Simply Priceless in this case) win or lose against another certain tag team (in this case, Cena & Batista). Let this pan out - we have more episodes of RAW coming, and SummerSlam's just around the corner. The titles could change hands any day now.

I don't necessarily think it was a bad thing seeing Jericho in short tights, but damn did it look bizarre, after seeing him in long pants for over 10 years now. Kind of like when HHH went to shorts in 1999, Booker in 2000, and the British Bulldog after his heel turn in 1995. All of them had worn long tights for their entire time in the big leauges (as far as I know anyway, I'm sure I could be wrong on one or more of those) and for some reason it's really hard to get used to seeing them look so different. All three of those I mentioned received their first push as legitimate world title contenders upon going to the shorts, so maybe that's a good sign for the near future of Jericho, even though he has been there before.

Posted By: Jeff (Guest)  on August 05, 2008 at 07:56 AM

Jericho just looked odd in the short trunks. I thought to myself there was no way JBL could get a pinfall in 15 seconds. That was pretty well booked. I was actually hoping for a 3-way match at SS. That match was really good for tv.

Who cares the DiBiase and Rhodes lost? The WWE put them on an even playing field with Cena & Batista for 15 minutes!! I thought they made them look good. They should have kept the titles but it's more important that they main evented and looked strong.

Kevin Sullivan has a good point there, the only tag teams are Cryme Tyme and Simply Priceless, hardly a division. It will be good for Simply Priceless to win them back though, maybe some outside interferance from their new leader, Randy Orton.

Its not like Cena and Batistawent over an experienced team. HOW LONG have Rhodes and DiBiase been tagging in kayfabe terms? I usually go against ragtag pairings beating established teams but, as I stated, I don't consider Rhodes and DiBiase an established team yet, just two cocky youngsters who got in over their heads. Whether or not this s a good or a bad move will become apparent in the coming weeks and months not in the immediate aftermath.

Having said all that though, I do hate wacky tag champs who don't get along, I would have preferred if they were both on the same page when they went over the champs.

"J.D I get the impression you actually think JBL stands a chance of winning at Summerslam."

Not at all. I think Punk's just keeping the title warm for Randy Orton, but I think, with rumors of JBL's impending retirement, he might take this opportunity to make Punk the same way Eddy did everything possible to get JBL over.

    Dunn, that's not Marcellus Wallace's soul, it's a GIMP IN A BAG!

I think the first hour of the show was great action and thankfully really wrestling based. They could easily rebuild a great Intercontinental title division around exciting and young guys like Kingston, Burchill, Santino Marella, Jamie Noble, and Lance Cade. I like that the IC title is being re-emphasized, but I also remember when they tried to do this for about three weeks in 2006. As ever, I'm cautiously optimistic that it'll last.

I think it sucks that CM Punk had to eat the pinfall after a solid 10 minute match, but I have to admit he was kicking ass up till that point...and not in the John Cena-esque, "total domination" way that some people seem to hate (I don't hate it, but it does get old sometimes). He had to work for every shot he landed against JBL or Jericho, and he usually got tagged back for good measure. If this is the kind of "come from behind" booking that Vince has in mind for Punk, then yes, it could work quite well, but only if somewhere, somehow, Punk gets a difinitve win. I hope it'll be at Summerslam. No bullshit, no interference, no overbooking, just Knee, bulldog, kick, GTS, pin.

Cena and Batista as tag champs adds nothing to their match at Summerslam and it's a hack booking decision - HOWEVER, it won't be for nothing if Rhodes and Dibiase beat them back for the titles at some point soon, preferrably cleanly (though probably too much to ask). It could get them over big time as the team to beat.

Does anybody else think that Kane is talking about himself? Congrats J.D.

I was expecting JBL to help Simply Priceless win in a kind of you scratch my back I'll scratch yours deal in return to help him become no. 1 cot or something. Then the interference would lead to a 4-way at SummerSlam.

But that didn't happen instead we got a nice edition of Raw even though I didn't agree with the main event. It was a pretty good match and Cody and Ted were doing a good job as heels but tag champs that hate each other again? Twice last year and I got to see it again? Any ways I still see something happening over the next 2 weeks that'll change the Batista v. Cena match. I could be wrong though.

I liked how the Handicap match went down. Jericho and JBL couldn't work together and it almost cost them the match. I didn't like the final 5 seconds but it was cool and Punk didn't need to win against all odds in this since it was a handicap match (it would be different if it were 1-on-1) JD you had me rolling when you were talking about Cole and his 33% chance of winning theory.

I would prefere Kingston & Mickie vs. Burchill & Katie because I'm not sold on Santino but I like Beth (has she been getting hotter over the last couple weeks or is it me?)

Any way good show until the ending seriously I no need for that

Kane has been going around carrying a bag, and saying 'is he alive or dead'...

Here is something that came to me:

Inside the bag is his mask, and he is talking about the old masked Kane. Eventually Kane will reach the conclusion, that he is alive and that he will return... But fans will still not know who he is, or what is in the bag.

An opponent will grab the bag during the match, open it, look into it and just stare at it in fear... Still in his tracks, Kane will come up from behind and chokeslam his opponents.

Next week on RAW, the opponent from last week is asked what he did see, but he refuses to talk about it, and Kane announces that he is alive and will return at next PPV. And then masked Kane returns...

Bag + is he alive or dead = Mask.

    What speaks against it?

''Adamaley'' pulled off a great show. Let's be honest about that. Santino likes the guy.

Jericho looks bigger and stronger with shorts which is an advantage for a guy of his size. Good work there.

    Shity Summerslam world title matches:
    Punk vs JBL
    HHH vs Khali
This will hurt the showm a lot. At least we have Hell in a Cell and a ''way too early'' Cena vs Batsita.
HBK announcement adds some suspens as well.

I used to like Kane's angle but now it bores me to tears since it is not likely that he'll wear the mask again.

Tag match...bad idea. Simply Priceless had some momentum which is a bit lost now.

Am I the only one who thinks Dibiase is gonna become one hell of the best heel champ ever in the short term?

Yeah, but this is a way to keep John and Dave from competing AGAINST each other, and then you end up getting your WrestleMania match.

    It's alright. IF it's alright.
