The Summerslam 2008 Breakdown
Posted by J.D. Dunn on 08.18.2008

Summerslam 2008
by J.D. Dunn

Interesting fact: The Summerslam commercial features Chris Jericho, Batista, and Rey Mysterio – two of whom don't even have matches on the show.

  • August 17, 2008

  • Live from Indianapolis, Ind.

  • Your hosts are Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, Todd Grisham, Tazz, Jim Ross and Matt Striker.

  • Opening Match: MVP vs. Jeff Hardy.
Jeff uses his quickness to avoid MVP early, but MVP keeps backing into the corners to stall. Jeff charges him but gets belly-to-bellied into the turnbuckle. MVP settles into a Butterfly Lock and reverses a monkeyflip to a heel hook. Jeff makes the ropes and tries to slingshot back in, but MVP cuts him off with a right. Back in, Jeff hits a neckbreaker, but when he goes for his corner dropkick, MVP just kicks him away. Jeff seems a little sluggish. MVP charges for his Yakuza Kick, but Jeff counters with a sleeper drop. Jeff goes for another corner dropkick, but MVP counters *again* to a powerslam. Jeff slips out of it, though, and hits the Whisper in the Wind. Jeff goes up, but Shelton Benjamin runs down. Jeff jumps on him instead of hitting the Swanton. Back up, Jeff misses the Swanton and eats a Drive-by Kick at 10:13. Pretty straight-forward match without much risk from Jeff. I did like how they kept the theme of Jeff going for the dropkick only to have it backfire. Nothing spectacular, especially after some quality Smackdown matches involving Shelton. Hopefully, the aftermath gives us a good three-way feud. **1/4

  • Maria talks intergender tag. Santino makes fun of Maria for letting herself go.

  • WWE Women's Title & Intercontinental Title: Kofi Kingston & Mickie James vs. Santino Marella & Beth Phoenix.
Santino looks like Kurt Angle's "special" brother in that doublet. The women do a little serious wrestling early – if you can call it that. Mickie dropkicks Beth's right knee, but Beth sells the left. It's all comedy after that. Santino ducks to the floor and, instead of catching Beth when she gets dropkicked off the apron, he gets out of her way and lets her splat on the outside mat. Kofi uses the Matt Cross fake tope, and Marella hops into Beth's arms. Ha ha! Back in, Kofi gets dumped, and Mickie DDTs Santino. Beth sneaks up on her and hits the Chickenwing Buster at 5:41 to give her the Women's Title and Santino the Intercontinental Title. Just a bunch of goofball fun. I await the power couple of 'Glamarella' on Raw. Santino hops on Beth's shoulders to celebrate in an image that should rival Elizabeth's skirt, Undertaker's face-to-face with himself, and Shawn's pinball sell of the Hogan boot as iconic Summerslam images. *1/2

  • Shawn Michaels brings his wife Rebecca out to discuss his future. First rule of wrestling: never, ever bring your family to the show if you're involved in a feud. He announces that the doctors told him to retire, and that's just what he's going to do. Chris Jericho interrupts, of course, and demands that Shawn give him credit for ending his career. Shawn says he can do that if Chris Jericho can go home and tell his wife and kids that he will never be Shawn Michaels. OH SNAP! Jericho spins Shawn around to punch him, but Shawn ducks, and Jericho knocks out Shawn's wife. Jericho looks upset but shrugs it off and walks out, leaving Shawn to glare at him as they check on Shawn's wife. Just great stuff all around. She even took a decent bump off the punch. And to top it all off, some lady in the crowd yelled, "Do you feel like a big man?" at Jericho. Kayfabulous.

  • ECW Heavyweight Title: Mark Henry (w/Tony Atlas) vs. Matt Hardy.
Mark Henry has been the best-booked champion of the three brands since winning the title. Well, until now. Matt avoids a charge and hits the Twist of Fate! Atlas yanks him out, though, for the DQ at 0:26. Atlas puts the boots to him, but Jeff Hardy makes the save. I know ECW is the ugly, bastard child of the WWE, but they really deserve better than this. [N/R]

  • Promo for Punk vs. JBL – it actually runs longer than the previous match.

  • World Heavyweight Title: CM Punk vs. John Bradshaw Layfield.
One of the problems I've had with Punk's matches as champion is that he tends to be a slow starter, and the audience's attention just kind of drifts. That's not a problem here as he peppers JBL with kicks and hits a tope to pop the crowd. Back in, JBL steamrolls him and hits a Steinerish Super Fallaway Slam. Bradshaw grabs a bearhug. Punk comes back with the corner knee but takes a short clothesline. Punk slugs his way back and cuts off the Clothesline from Hell with a flying kick. A replay shows that JBL fell on Punk's head and busted the back of his head open. JBL comes back with a backdrop superplex, but Punk ducks a swing and hits the Go2Sleep at 11:13. It looked like JBL had to cover a bit for Punk, who seemed to be knocked silly for a moment. Nothing egregious, though. This was a good way to get Punk over as the resourceful kid who may take a beating but finds a way to win. **3/4

  • WWE Heavyweight Title: Triple H vs. The Great Khali (w/Runjan Singh).
I guess this is the 2008 equivalent of Ric Flair vs. El Gigante. HHH hits a clothesline, but Khali shrugs him off and hits the Tree Slam. He doesn't cover, though, and instead goes for the melon squisher. Hunter kicks at his knee and chopblocks him. Man, that makes Batista look like a real pussy. Khali ducks to the floor and hits Hunter with the big chop. Back in, Hunter staggers to the corner. Man, that makes Undertaker look like a real pussy. Khali goes to the nerve pinch as the fans assail him with a "You can't wrestle" chant. Hunter fights out and hits a facebuster than sends Khali back into the Andre tied-in-the-ropes spot. Khali backdrops out of the Pedigree and sends Hunter to the floor. Hunter knocks him into the post, but Khali just reaches up and swats him off the apron. Hunter powers out of the vise-grip, avoids a swing, and hits the Pedigree at 10:20. This bordered on frustrating because it wasn't that Hunter was "the Cerebral Assassin" – Khali was just that stupid. Also, Hunter's ring generalship is wasted as a babyface. I was at least entertained by Hunter trying to come up with *any* offense that would work on the big guy, though. *3/4

  • John Cena vs. Batista.
In a funny twist, these are apparently the WWE's two marquee names, but all of the heat in this match is negative. People are either booing Cena or booing Batista. It's pretty standard power stuff, with both guys failing to get their finishers. Batista gets a figure-four leglock out of nowhere to perk the crowd up. Cena makes the ropes and dumps Batista to the floor. Batista elbows out of the FU, but Cena snaps his knee down and locks in the STFU. Batista gets turned around and makes the ropes. Cena goes for the FU again, but Batista slips out and grabs the rear naked choke. He lets that go and hits the spear. ONE, TWO, THR-NO! Cena reverses a powerslam and hits the FU but can't cover immediately. It only gets two. Up to the top, they slug it out so the fans can do the "Yay/Boo!" thing. Cena wins and comes off for the Cena Slice, but Batista catches him with a powerbomb. ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! Batista is pissed, hauls Cena up, and finishes with the Demonbomb at 13:45. Damned fine babyface match. Mostly, it was trading power moves, and that's really all I expected from them. Batista really needs a serious regular submission finisher like Cena's FU to play off. ***1/4

  • Hell in a Cell: Edge vs. The Undertaker.
It's all Undertaker early as he beats Edge around the ring and Snake Eyes Edge into the ring steps into the corner. Edge apparently blocked, though, and sends Taker into the steps. A few chairshots rock the Taker enough for Edge to set him up on a table. Edge splashes him through the table. Taker sits up and goes for a chokeslam, but Edge fights out of it. To the floor, Edge slips out of a Snake Eyes and spears Taker THROUGH THE CAGE! That knocks over part of the cell wall and lets them get out. Taker whips Edge into the barricade. They fight up to the announce tables where Edge runs across all three tables to SPEAR the Undertaker. Back in, Edge nails Taker with a camera in a play on the Survivor Series match. That gets two. Edge readies for another spear but gets chokeslammed. Taker sets up for the Last Ride, but now Edge goes low. Taker shrugs it off and tries again, but Edge slips out and spears him for two. Taker sets up for a Tombstone on the steps, but Edge counters to the Edge-o-Matic. Edge goes up, but Taker catches him and chokeslams him through a pair of tables on the outside. Now Taker hits a spear and nails Edge with the camera. That sets up a Conchairto and the Tombstone at 26:41. I've been reading a lot of MOTY talk, but like the TLC match it felt more like a walk-through than an actual match. The match did have three great spots – Edge's spear through the cell, the spear on the tables, and the chokeslam through the stacked tables – but it felt like they had just written down a bunch of spots they wanted to do and went through them one by one without anything to hold the match together. I think the crowd reaction demonstrates that, as they would pop for the big spots and then get listless waiting for the next setup. That's not to say it's a horrible match. It was actually very entertaining in patches, but it's more of a collection of spots than anything. ***1/2

  • After the match, Taker lifts Edge up onto one ladder, gets another ladder, and chokeslams Edge through the ring (or rather shoves Edge through the ring). Then, to top off the Black Scorpion-ness of it all, Taker prays to Prometheus and sets the hole on fire. Jim Ross, who seemed to be sleepwalking through the commentary in the main event, is remarkably calm considering Edge might be on fire.

  • The 411: The highlight of the show was the exchange between Shawn and Jericho, but that's not necessarily a knock on all the matches. The Hell in the Cell was a pretty good spotfest. Cena versus Batista was fine for a babyface power match a la Luger/Sting, but not the EPIC encounter they were hyping (especially at less than 15 minutes). Everything else fell into the "mildly interesting" category. Tough call, but I'm going to give it a very mild thumbs up for the last two matches and the Jericho/Shawn segment. I'd wait for the DVD, though.

    Thumbs slightly up.

The Summerslam commercials also featured Finlay & Hornswoggle. I guess that epic confrontation with Mike Knox wasn't considered PPV-worthy.

i think they need a young up and comer to stand up for hbk and give jericho a match for the next ppv and hold off the next hbk/jericho match for survior series, but i have no idea who they could use

Taker should have used his fire summoning powers during the match instead of after.

The Edge saga is a mortality play.

I take the end as a metaphor of Edge being engulfed in the flames of his own sin.

That HIAC was definitely overrated by most, but Dunn was pretty good on it. Its a "good match" but lacked the primal brutality needed to end this rivalry. The post match was a nice visual but it was just a visual stunt. I didnt end the night in awe as I did in past HIAC matches...this was weak...

Cena and Batista delivered "enough" and everything else was pretty decent (except for the ECW match)...but still, SummerSlam has fallen off my radar and is no longer a guaranteed classic the way WMania is...thats that

So hold up... so far everyone has rated the Cena/Batista match *** + stars even though
    - It was supposed to be an EPIC encounter (13 minutes isnt epic), a dream match in the WWE that *everyone* wanted to see
    - The wrong guy went over, now Batista is almost certain to be #1 contender for the next year... again

Still Summerslam wasnt bad, it just wasnt as good as we hoped

Yea, JD. Edge-Taker wasn't as good as most opening matches for ROH PPVs. You are an idiot.

Cut some slack for Dunn, he's a damn good reporter and reviewer.
With that said, I can't agree with the last two ratings. You can't rate a match with workrate alone, the story telling and the "never before seen" aspects play as big, if not more, than the spots.

hey Dunn, great review, i really do agree w/your ratings on each match except i'd give batista/cena and taker/edge a straight ***. they were fine matches, but they were not MOTY worthy. i wished Cena would've won, i dont know why he's jobbing all of a sudden this yr, i mean, its a nice change of pace, but batistas punk ass should've jobbed, i pray he isnt getting a title shot for punk's belt.

i was pretty surprised how much i enjoyed cena vs batista considering i don't care for either wrestler. but this was a decent match, mostly because i didnt automatically know who was going over. taker/edge and punk/jbl were both forgettable at best. i went into this ppv hoping that either beth would become the intercontinental champion or santino the womens champ (which would have led to even more comedy gold down the line).

Actually, lack of story was my biggest complaint about the HiaC. That was pretty much the definition of a spotfest.

entertaining main event, but too many uses of thier finishers and spots, like already stated.

Posted By: joe5566 (Guest)  on August 19, 2008 at 01:26 AM

There was absolutely a story to the main event. Edge throwing everything at UT, including attempting to put him out in the same fashion he had done at One Night Stand (tables outside the ring). The first portion of the match was about getting Edge over as a legit psycho, willing to do what was encessary to beat UT. He basically did more to Taker than anyone ever has, but it wasn't enough, and Taker exacted revenge for everything Edge has done to him in the final five minutes of the match. The announcers even laid this out. Usually I can see where you're coming from with your lower-than-the-average match ratings, but I think this one's pretty unfounded. It was VERY reminiscent of the first HIAC match.

The HBK/Y2J segment was worth the price alone. Amazing segment with HBK saying "tell them I'll never be Shawn Michaels." And the crowd was very into it too.

There was a very subtle but noticeable story to the HIAC which is why I thought it was over 4 stars. If you noticed, Edge spent most of his time bringing in his specialties (TLC). This explains why he was so damn confident going in. He knew he could use his area of expertise in such a match. Undertaker, being the veteran of HIAC, utilized the cage a lot more. Many nice moments in there: Edge jumping from the ladder ala what he did to Mick Foley, using the camera ala Survivor Series, Undertaker using Edge's offense in order to take control and win (which makes sense because Edge was so confident about his strengths so it's appropriate that Taker used the strengths that Edge was so confident with). The spots alone brought to around 3 stars. The symbolism took it over 4 IMO.

Still you and your sarcastic look will say that it was bad. I am glad I enjoy wrestling more than you. With this outlook, I wonder why you even continue writing about wrestling. For heavens sake, for once, just go and read the forums over here only at 411mania.com, then you will understand why IT was 5 star.

I thought the HITC was ridiculously fun as they nearly killed each other... it was a bit 'spotty' but still used good psychology based on previous events surrounding their feud, also Edge's demonic facial expressions deserved as extra *!

    Overall I'd give Edge/Taker ****1/4.

The rest of the PPV was subpar, Cena/Batista was fun but didn't feel as epic as it should of done. Jericho/HBK continues to be the most compelling storyline as it has a real sense of reality about it.

You missed one of the coolest elements of the Edge/UT match. At the end of the match, Underatker returned all of Edge's offense to him. You mentioned the moves but didn't point out what the significance was. That was a pretty unique moment and was worth pointing out because it made the finish of the match memorable. Good recap, otherwise, I mostly agree.

I don't usually comment like this, but you really poorly rated the main event. You gave the Fight Without Honor match a higher rating, which was just as much a spotfest (under your definition) than this match. This match was just as brutal and as other people said the first half was Edge taking all his anger out, unfortunately The Undertaker also came back and used all of Edge's past weapons of doom to gain his vengeance. I think your rating may be because of the the fact that you do review FIP and ROH and despite their claim to have more wrestling, they usually sneak in a hardcore match into their cards on a regular basis. You've become immune to hardcore matches whereas the current core demographic of the WWE rarely (rightfully so) gets true intense matches.

"You gave the Fight Without Honor match a higher rating, which was just as much a spotfest (under your definition) than this match."

Slightly higher because A) it moved, and B) they worked in relation to their feud. That really didn't happen here. Edge *didn't* "unleash all his anger." He got his ass kicked for several minutes before getting a fluke move in.

Posted By: J.D. Dunn (Registered)  on August 19, 2008 at 05:18 PM

No he didn't. That's completely misrepresenting the match. Edge was in control for large portions of the first twenty minutes of the match, and it certainly wasn't due to fluking it. He smashed Taker with the steps, speared him into the steps, battered him with chairshots, speared him through the cage wall, gave him a chair elbowdrop through a tabel, gave him the Edge-O-Matic on the stairs and speared him through the announce table. Noen of those were "flukes". The story of the match was Edge hitting all of this huge stuff on 'Taker, but it not being enough to stop UT eventually getting his revenge.

Posted By: Ian (Guest)  on August 20, 2008 at 03:21 AM

Dunn, maybe you should read Csonka's review of the HIAC match. It did tell a story. The moves that they used, the body language, everything about it was story. Edge is crazed after ruining his marriage and Foley ripping him apart verbally for being a wuss. The last few weeks he's been out of his mind and that continued. Taker's offense all told the story of the feud. First we get the big throw through the double tables a la their TLC match at ONS, then he hits the conchairto... Edge's own move. Then he ends it by throwing him off a ladder. So in the final 5 minutes, he used the three devices that Edge used to "banish" him from the WWE.

Have you been watching the feud and the matches? This was just as much about story telling as anything. You can have big spots if they are consistent with the tale being told and all of these were.

Posted By: Guest#7914 (Guest)  on August 20, 2008 at 01:00 PM

I disagree, Ian. Watch the first five minutes and until Edge blocks that Snake Eyes into the steps, it's all Undertaker.

Can anyone tell me what Edge did *differently* as someone who has snapped than he did to Matt Hardy or John Cena or anyone else he feuded with?

Posted By: J.D. Dunn (Registered)  on August 20, 2008 at 03:55 PM

JD, it's no good arguing. Most fans give UT ***** for every no-selling, slow, boring, seen-it-all-before-100-times match he has. He's the dullest wrestler on the planet and only gets carried to watchable matches by really, really good workers like Edge and only has longevity because due to his character he doesn't have to sell anything, ever. He's only interested in putting over himself and has only ever put over himself. I will, however, give this match an extra star because UT didn't use the ROPEWALK OF DOOM~! / Old Skool for once.

"First rule of wrestling: never, ever bring your family to the show if you're involved in a feud."

I thought the first rule of Wrestling was never bash two somoans heads together. And if it's not the 1st, it should be.

UT-Edge was disappointing only because there was no blood. And with the buildup that the feud received, there needed to be.

Posted By: Scrubs fan (Guest)  on August 21, 2008 at 12:50 AM

    JD -

Nothing. That's the point. Edge had become a man scared of his own shadow and reliant on Vickie to get him through every situation. When Foley told Edge to bring out "the old Edge", that was who he was referring to, the guy who would literally stop at nothing to win a match, like he has done against people like Hardy and Cena and Foley. That's the Edge that went missing since WrestleMania - the guy who pounded the Hell out of Ric Flair and John Cena in TLC matches, who speared Foley through a flaming table. That part of him was re-awoken, and in full force. So instead of cowering and trying to escape UT and fluke his way out of it, he went head-on. Not once did he back down or beg off or try and slip past UT.

And UT being in control until Edge blocks a move doesn't constitute a fluke. If it did, every change in a control a match experienced would be deemed as such.

I agree with the spot to spot nature of the match. The spots get *** 1/2, the match itself gets ** 1/2.
