411’s WWE Smackdown Report 9.19.08
Posted by Larry Csonka on 09.19.2008

WWE Smackdown: 9.19.08
-We get a video package from last week's show.

-JR and The Tazz welcome us to the show!

Diva's Title Match: Michelle McCool © vs. Maryse

Lock up and McCool with the takedown, to the feet, counters and a side headlock takedown by Maryse. McCool escapes and uses a head scissors, but Maryse maintains control and celebrates. Forearm strikes to McCool, off the ropes and a split by Maryse, over by McCool, steps on her back and then gets a basement dropkick. Maryse to the floor, McCool mocks her as McCool goes to the apron, Maryse trips her up and gets a boot to the head as McCool lays on the apron. Basement dropkick by Maryse, and a cover for 2. Maryse gets cocky, not the first time and then mounts McCool, not the first time, delivers rights and McCool manages a roll up for 2. They trade rights, Maryse slams McCool down and then rolls into the camel clutch. McCool tries to escape, works to her knees and to a standing position. McCool slams her ass into Maryse, but Maryse slams McCool down headfirst and covers for 2. Maryse counters a head scissors, but McCool with a dropkick and another. Off the ropes and a front flipping neck breaks gets 2. Back elbow by Maryse, but McCool counters with a sit out implant buster for the win.

Winner: Michelle McCool @ 5:50 via pin
  • That was not bad at all, actually that was rather good. Maryse has gone from falling all over herself to having not only passable matches, but also some good ones. A nice way to open the show.
    RATING: **

-Vickie and Big Show chill backstage. Show says he will get the show where she wants it to be and he will become the champion. Eve comes in and asks about the Undertaker, and Vickie wants no part of that. She then says she has been training to wrestle, Vickie and Show laugh at her and he then shows the video of the Undertaker's ass kicking at Unforgiven.

-We see some people partying in "Tootsie's Bar" in Nashville.

    Festus w/Jesse vs. Ryan Braddock

It's clobberin time as the bell rings. Festus misses a corner charge after some clubbing blows, a dropkick by Braddock and then slams Festus to the corner. Festus fires back with rights, off the ropes and an uppercut to Braddock. More rights follow, corner ass charge by Festus but he gets chop blocked by Braddock, who then works the chinlock. He then transitions to the sleeper, jumps on Festus' back but then gets tossed to the mat. Flying biscuit by Festus and the flapjack follows. Festus doesn't pin him though, instead he duct tapes him and gets disqualified.

Winner: Ryan Braddock @ 3:00 via Duct Tape Disqualification
  • It was actually shaping up until they did the bullshit moving stuff. Yes I know it is for the move to MyNetworkTV, and NO I don't care. Yes, I think it sucks.
    RATING: *

-After a commercial break they wrap Braddock up in duct tape and bubble wrap, and take him away. Hoorah…joy.

-Vickie and Big Show discuss Taker, and Vickie says she will make him get on his knees and apologize for everything he has done to her. Show promises to humble him if she shows up! Vickie says she wants to see what happened at Unforgiven happen at No Mercy. They watch the video again.

-JR and Tazz discuss the situation with Taker and Big Show.

-Shelton drops in a short promo, he's the greatest commodity on the WWE, he's the gold standard and his opponent spent 13-months in jail, and is NOT on his level due to that.

    Non-Title Match: Shelton Benjamin © vs. R-Truth

They circle and Benjamin does not look impressed. Lock up, to the corner and we get a clean break as Benjamin looks at Truth and is still not impressed. Single leg takedown by Benjamin, some mat work and to the ropes they go. Back elbow by Truth, Benjamin in with rights and shoots Truth off the ropes, spinning forearm by Truth and forearms follow. He lays the boots to Benjamin in the corner, and then backs off. Benjamin does NOT approve, boots Truth in the gut, and rights follow. More rights by Benjamin, but a leg lariat by Truth takes Benjamin down and a cover for 2. Off the ropes, and Benjamin counters a hip toss with the XPLODER~! Chinlock followed by cross face shots by Benjamin, a side back breaker and he bends Truth over his knee. Truth battles back with rights, Benjamin releases and punts him in the ribs. A whip to the corner and Truth hits hard and falls to the mat. Truth battles back again, uppercuts and knees, Benjamin with a knee and tosses Truth to the corner, be blocks that and to the mat they go and Benjamin with shots to the back of the head and into a camel clutch variation. Truth to his fee, elbows out, off the ropes and a sleeper by Benjamin. Jawbreaker by Truth, sidekick to the gut and the ax kick misses. German try by Benjamin, but Truth gets a front roll into the roll up and gets the win!

    Winner: R-Truth @ 7:00 via pin
  • Another good match here, that allowed Truth to show off. I question him winning right now over Shelton as one would think that MVP and The Kendrick would be in the US Title mix, and they may still be. Interesting.
    RATING: **½

-Hurricane Helms appears with a VH1 style pop up video deal, and says the price of gold has just dropped. LULZ, he showed Shelton.

-Jeff Hardy comes to the ring and gets the mic. He says he has been with the company, on and off for 10-years. It hasn't all been smooth and he is known as a reckless risk taker, your charismatic enigma. He normally isn't bothered by what people say because he is confident, but HHH made him think. He said I always miss the brass ring, that I never have had the big one. Jeff was angry but says that HHH was helping to motivate him and make him better. Good job HHH, you fired me up and made me better. At No Mercy I will reach for your WWE championship. As far as Vladimir Kozlov goes, he wants competition and last week you attacked me from behind instead of facing him like a man.

-THE Brian Kendrick comes out and says that Jeff has forgotten about him. You got bigger fish to fry buddy! THE Brian Kendrick right now. Jeff said that he beat him last week to become the #1 contender, and Kendrick says last week was not the proper platform for him to show off his skills. But tonight is one on one, unless Jeff has some "extra curricular activities" to do like HHH always mentions.

Jeff Hardy vs. THE Brian Kendrick w/Big Zeke

Jeff attacks right at the bell because he is SUPER SERIAL MAD! Hip toss, boots and the ref pulls Jeff off of Kendrick. Kendrick backdrops Jeff on a powerbomb try, then tosses him to the floor. And we'll head to a commercial @ 1:30.

Back from commercial @ 4:30 as Kendrick has a single leg crab applied. Jeff gets the ropes, so Kendrick kick shim in the head a few times. A basement dropkick by Kendrick and a cover for 2. Snap mare, kicks to the back and back to the single leg crab goes Kendrick. A break by Kendrick, looks for the hold again and Jeff with the mule kick, that was awkward. Corner dropkick by Jeff, he stops Kendrick from escaping, counters and a gourd buster suplex by Jeff gets a close 2. Kendrick tries to stop Jeff from going up top, off the ropes and a kick to the face by Kendrick. An Irish whip, Jeff looks for the whisper, Zeke stops him by standing there with that "I'm about to rape you" look, that allows Kendrick to try THE KENDRICK, but Jeff turns that into a backslide for the win.

Winner: Jeff Hardy @ 8:00 via pin
  • Well I have to say that the match was completely under whelming. The right guy won as Hardy is heading to PPV for the title shot, but since Unforgiven THE Brian Kendrick has really been derailed.
    RATING: *½

-As Jeff goes up the ramp, Kozlov comes out and kicks his head off. Maybe that is why he was held off of the plane, he wasn't intoxicated, Kozlov simply kicked him all the way to queer street. See, that's what you get for jumping to conclusions, there is usually a very simple answer to these things.

-Vickie is instructing someone to install a bigger TV as Show runs in and says Undertaker is here. They do some deep breathing and set for the attack. Vickie says to get on your knees, we see from "The Undertaker's" side, "he" apologizes and then "he" says "he" is sorry…because it's Chavo dressed up as the Undertaker. They all have a laugh. Oh that crazy Chavo, he had me there for a minute… No, not really.

    ~CARLITO'S CABANA~
Carlito does a mic check, Primo as well and they welcome us to the Cabana. Was happy to return to Smackdown last week, but even better to tag with his baby brother last week, Primo. Primo says it was easy last week to get his first victory, he thought the competition would be tougher. He says they will become champions, and that is cool. Carlito says not to steal his lines, and they argue over who's show it is and Ryder and Hawkins come to the ring. Hurricane Helms pops in and makes fun of Ryder and Hawkins. The champs say that Carlito and Primo got lucky, and Carlito asks who they are. The champs introduce themselves, and Carlito and Primo laugh at them. "REALLY?" Carlito then says if they are the champions, then they should have a tag title match right here and now. The champs deny them, and Primo says people at least know who he and his brother are. Ryder and Hawkins mention hanging with Edge and La Familia, and then Carlito has to stop Primo from saying bad words in Spanish, I guess. The champs agree to a tag title match next week. Carlito goes to wrap up the show, and here come Jesse and Festus. The champs attacks Carlito and Primo, Jesse hits the ring and Primo sneaks out to ring the bell and the champs get tossed to the floor. Festus chases them with a palm tree. Seriously. Carlito then tosses apples to the crowd.

-Maria sketches a bit as Brie Bella comes in and they chat about proper douching methods, fashion and hair. Brie asks for an outfit, and an identical one; just in case. Natalya and Victoria bust in and say that they have figured out what Brie has been doing, Hornswoggle. Next week they will have a match. Natalya and Victoria rip up Maria's designs. MEAN GIRLZ~!

-Scotty Goldman impersonated Khali in his little screen promo, and has a puppet for Singh, a paper bag puppet. My daughter made one of those last week in art class, tremendous.

The Great Khali vs. Scotty Goldman

Goldman is game but gets clobbered down by Khali. To the corner, Kevin Nash offense by Khali. Short-armed clothesline by Khali, claw hold, TREE SLAM and the one-foot cover by Khali ends it.

Winner: The Great Khali @ 1:30 via pin

-Next week Khali will face Kozlov.

-Back from commercial as JR and the Tazz discuss the great Smackdown ratings from last week.

    -Raw Rebound time.

-Ryder, Hawkins, Chavo and Bam (who apparently made up) chill backstage. Chavo then kicks them out and wants to watch the video of Show beating down Taker again, but shit gets REAL UP IN HERE as Taker's voodoo mumbo jumbo happens as he appears on the screen. GONG. He is in the room and chokes Chavo out. GONG. Chavo sucks.

Non-Title Match: HHH © vs. MVP

HHH doesn't seem impressed with MVP as they lock up, side headlock by MVP. HHH backs him off, off the ropes and a shoulder block by MVP. BALLIN! Off the ropes and a hip toss by MVP. He talks some shit to HHH, BALLIN, and they circle again. Lock up, side headlock by MVP, off the ropes and a shoulder block again. HHH then blocks the hip toss and eats a clothesline. Crotch chop by HHH, that's BALLIN attitude era style. To the corner, HHH hooks the nose and then punches MVP right in the face. Drop toehold by HHH, headlock takedown and HHH has control. We'll head to a commercial @ 3:00.

Back from commercial @ 6:30 as MVP has control of the match. He is working the left arm, rights by HHH but MVP gets a face buster HHH style and covers for 2. MVP continues to work the left arm with an Anderson-style arm bar, to the mat and drops the knee to the shoulder. MVP covers for 2 as HHH got a foot on the rope. MVP back to the arm, drops back with the key lock, tried to wrap the legs but HHH blocks that. HHH works to his feet, powers out but MVP with a knee to the gut. MVP is right back on the arm, a hammerlock know and, shoots a half nelson and covers for 2. MVP maintains the arm bar, rights to the arm and HHH is back to his feet. Rights to MVP, he looks to escape but MVP takes him back down with the arm bar. HHH once again works up to his feet, overpowers MVP, escapes but takes a knee. Off the ropes, reversal and a boot to the face by MVP followed by a single arm DDT that gets 2. MVP with a clothesline to the back of the head, sets and charges in for the Kawada kick but eats a Harley Race knee from HHH. Rights by HHH, neck breaker follows and then more rights by HHH. Off the ropes, face buster by HHH and then a charging clothesline gets 2. An Irish whip, boot by MVP, charges at HHH but SPINEBUSTER time for MVP. He rolls to the floor, HHH follows, they brawl and MVP slams HHH off of the announce table. Rolls HHH back in, MVP to the top, leaps in, KICK, WHAM, PEDIGREE and that is all.

Winner: HHH @ 14:25 via pin
  • It was a good match, but the middle seemed to last forever, it just FELT long, like way too long.
    RATING: **½

-Unfortunately for HHH Vladimir Kozlov makes his way to the ring, can a Russian get a proper challenge? HHH stands and waits as Kozlov makes his way slowly into the ring. MVP distracts HHH, and that allows Kozlov to attack. They brawl, but Kozlov slams him to the corner and delivers several shoulder blocks to the gut of HHH. Off the ropes and HHH gets the face buster, but the HEAD BUTT OF DOOM lays out the Game.

-I caught up with Kozlov earlier today and asked him why he attacked HHH. His reply was, "ß íåóìîëèìàÿ ñèëà, ñóêà!" Which translated means, "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!" That's good enough for me.

This was terrible opening is women that should be in the minor leagues. Hardy looks he is back on drugs! A bunch of non-descript matches w/hhh hogging tv time!

The fuck, Csonka? It's been two weeks, Kendrick's hardly been "derailed". He looked good in the four way, and Hardy's win over him looked a little fluke-esque. What do you want, him challenging Shelton as a damn heel, or beating the Undertaker?

Kozlovmania just ran wild over HHH!

Vladimir Kozlov is our man, if he can't do it, no one can! Go Vladimir, go Vladimir!

Oh yeah.... they didn't address the Bam/Chavo thing did they?
Carlito & Primo, I'm sorry, I like them, in a sea of generic so-so lame-named nobodies, these guys stand out and could contribute greatly in the tag-team division, they're colorful, were actually funny, and gimmicky... and "not motivated" comments aside, I'm willing to give them a chance as long as they don't go the Jesse & Festus route and turn into total jokes!
scotty goldman was pretty fun for about 2 seconds... that poor bastard. kendrick's outside ring antics continue to annoy (he looks like a kid in his underpants wearin his dad's jacket), he's talented in-ring big time but man, his character is such a tool... Is Benjamin's push over now that he jobbed to the new guy, cool fight and all but what the-?---
Any HHH match seems like it lasts forever... And why are Jesse & Festus moving the scrubs to the new network?

Not a smart idea having MVP, Kendrick and Shelton lose their match. They are all very talented and now the only thing to take them to the next level is a good push from WWE.

Posted By: Yea (Guest)  on September 19, 2008 at 11:37 PM

-Probably the best promo Jeff Hardy's done at least since the Randy Orton feud...if not ever. The yelling I could do without, but he's getting his point across a lot better than ever before and the crowd loves him.

-Brie (and, I guess, Nicole) Bella are my new obsession. Good GAWD.

-Carlito seems refreshed and motivated now that he's teaming with his brother. The two of them, with Primo being the major workhorse and Carlito being the charisma (though they both have that) could bring something to Smackdown very much like what Los Guerreros once did - they even have a dorky heel tag team to feud with. Too bad ECW seems to have shifted it's talent sharing to Raw...Miz and Morrison would've been great to play against these two.

-Triple H vs MVP had potential, and another match between the two still can...but Triple H once again bumped nicely in the first 2/3 of the match, and then in his comeback sequence, completely no-sold the left arm MVP had been working on for the entire match (I think it was the left, I couldn't tell). People bitch about Cena doing this kind of thing, but look who he most likely learned it from.

-I'm not entirely sure where they're going with Kozlov. I thought Jeff Hardy would break his winning streak to give him great heat going into No Mercy, but after tonight, I'm guessing they're gonna sacrifice the streak to Triple H. What a waste.

*vomits profusely* excuse me but the thought of yet another talentless hack like koslov holding or even contending for a world title is disgusting. come on actually put the belt on talented wrestlers, like jeff hardy, finlay, or regal even. wwe when will you learn that just because a guy is big, it doesn't mean he can wrestle. in fact few can.

What the hell ?,Koslov can actually wrestle though and also it's the other way around, just because a guy is big does'nt mean he CAN'T wrestle.

    Big guys who can wrestle;Taker/Vader/Kane/Umaga/Koslov/Batista/Show/JBL/.

Those are way more than a few.

First of all, the Juggernaut reference is from a cartoon parody video (look it up on YouTube, funny as hell). Secondly, I am moderately excited to see them hopefully hyping a Hurricane Helms return (too many H's). Have a nice day.

I found Carlito's Cabana funny although it seems pretty clear there will an eventual Cain and Abel brother feud here. I'm suprised to find out that Primo is 25. That is one baby-faced guy. Oh, and I like Victoria's joke that Brie is making out with Hornswoggle under the ring.

Oh... that show was so lame. What was up with that POV domination porn they shot with Vicki? Might have even been hot if it wasn't for Big Show being there.

A lot of the promos sound so rehearsed though... it's starting to look and sound like the children show we heard a month ago they wanted to market to... except for the Mistress Vicki POV video of course

Yeah, I don't get how Kendrick has been derailed since Unforgiven, especially seeing how it's only been two weeks and he's been in two high profile matches both weeks.

Also, the fuck was with Gregory Helms popping up at the top of the screen randomly not once but twice?! I thought I was hallucinating for a moment.

Why would Festus not pin him? The point is that when the bell rings he becomes a wrestling machine! Waste! Stupid waste!

    Helms returning is good news.

Chavo is wasted but if someone is going to be a victim of the camp spectacle that is the Undertaker's otherwordly powers then it might as well be the guy who used to ride a wooden horse.

    Goldman's burial is criminal.

As is Victoria languishing in a feud with face who use heel tactics... The Bella twins = Bizarro TNA Sting!

Jeff Hardy needs to be gone, long gone. THE Brian Kendrick should have been the one to go over without question.

HHH lives to hear the bawing of the IWC, it is Energon to him.

Oh and The Great Capt. Smooth: "Juggernaut bitch" is NOT an X3 reference (that in and of itself was a reference to the original material), please get a clue... STAT!

I think THE Brian Kendrick's Character is supposed to be a tool. If you think that, he must be doing a good job. And any list of big guys who can wrestle should never (and the Rock would say NEVER) include Kane and JBL. Koslov runs rings around both of them.

Kozlov will be eating pins from both Hardy and HHH in the not-too-distant future so I wouldn't read too much into his current "push".

Los Colons won't be nearly as interesting if they don't have challengers to the title, cue Miz/Morrison.

I like how they brought back Helms in the pop up sequences. The question is what will they do with him once he returns?

Good win by R-Truth. He'd be a nice mix in the US title scene.

I see some concerned fans about Benjamin and Kendrick's push. Well..Shelton lost so he could have a contender to challenge him at NO Mercy and I suspect he will retain when that match happens. And I'm not sure what is going on with Kendrick...maybe he will feud with Helms.

''Not a smart idea having MVP, Kendrick and Shelton lose their match. They are all very talented and now the only thing to take them to the next level is a good push from WWE.''

    Very good point there.

    ------------------------------------

Lol @ how foolish you sound. Kozlov is actually professionally trained and has a shit load of talent for a big guy..and that headbutt he does is fuckin awesome to me. I still remember the one he did to Jamie Noble. VICIOUS. I'm glad they're finally doing something with him.

Dr. Domino, I never have been into comics, even as a kid. I only heard that saying from X3.

Kozlov is seriously awesome. and the X3 reference was a nice touch, Larry.

I feel sorry for Brie Bella's twin who hides under the Smackdown ring until Brie crawls down there and tags her in. I'm surprised the can score a pinfall without squinting from the sudden bright lights. This is too much like the Basham Brothers switcheroo thing a few years back, except they didn't look alike to anyone except the referees.

Slick Rick, the Juggernaut reference is from X3. He says "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch" to Kitty Pryde, played by Ellen Page.

"I think THE Brian Kendrick's Character is supposed to be a tool. If you think that, he must be doing a good job. " by:APinOz (Guest)

I guess you're right m'man, I've said the same thing to people who hate the Miz but in this case he really ticks me off! that douche dance is horrible & he's so small & cocky AARRRRGHHHH! --- I guess he is doing his job!
    It's just that I've never seen a wrestler whose out-of-ring character I loathe yet I dig every fight & story-line he's in, because He's great in-ring...
I might be cheering him & singing his praises this time next year but, man, he annoys me...

**1/2 for the main event is a bit harsh, it was quite solid

I've always thought since going heel Maryse had a chance to improve, slowly but surely, and she has been. People went hard on her for weeks but you know, a certain blonde joined WWE as eye candy back in 2000 without learning how to wrestle at all and ended up holding seven women's championships with a standing ovation for her Stratusfying retirement match at 2006's Unforgiven.. so let's not be too harsh. I'm digging the slow improvement of Maryse and I can tell she knows how to work the crowd during the match when Michelle was grabbing her head Maryse kept posing and keeping the fans into it to show she's learning.

Vladimir I've always been fond of.. I wish he kept the no music/no tron though to make it all the more old-school. I love his very methodical and efficient attack and being an MMA fan myself Russian Combat Sambo is a damn fine combat system to draw from. I honestly never expected to see him lay out HHH and Hardy back to back weeks but, I'm glad. Too bad it means one of them probably ends his streak, but I'd love to see Kozlov on TV a lot more from his wrestling and throwing skills - back a few months vs Funaki he performed five seperate moves while holding the man's left wrist the entire time and those weren't easy moves to maintain limb control with. Impressive, and he need not say a word to get over as a heel which is hard to come by.

Oh yeah if Hardy wins the title, I'm not even going to pester my cable company to get MyNetworkTV. HHH needs to go over that man and definitively to give him time to get his problems under control and out of airports, meth labs, burning homes, etc etc.

So, is it another non-wrestling segment in No Mercy with Taker. That's CRAP! I guess he really rushed his return in the ring at Summerslam eh..

I think its RAW's turn for the interview segment this time with RKO and Punk.

Jeff Hardy is a IC title conteder at best. I hate these little wrestlers getting the world title. It makes wrestling look more fake than it really is. Rey mysterio a world champion? come on.Kozlov! Kozlov! Kozlov!!!

Wow, people are creaming themselves over that Xmen parody reference, half of them not even knowing its true origin (NOT THAT HORRIBLE LAST XMEN MOVIE), when really I read it and was like "Larry's lack of creativity makes me want Michael to get his recap up earlier". Whatever though.

i'm not saying that all big men can't wrestle. but even the best of them (undertaker, vader, bam bam bigalow), can only put on good matches on occasion. i dare you to come up with 5 legitimately good matches for the other wrestlers. as for koslov, admittedly to this point all of his matches have been squases. but none of the matches were remotely good. unless he shows the ability to put on a good match, i stick to my claim.

Kozlov will not reach his ultimate potential level of awesome until he starts coming out to the Russian National Anthem.

By the way, did anyone else find Jeff Hardy came across as a complete tool in his interview? I mean, in my understanding of the words, aren't both "charismatic" and "enigma" terms that don't mean a thing unless someone else is saying them about you?

I accept JR calling him that, but calling himself that is just retarded.

GOD, SmackDown has become shitty as of late. When Jeff Hardy, Triple H, and MVP are your ONLY decent talent to have wrestled in the past month, you KNOW things aren't going all too well. It's like Taker and Edge aren't even on the roster, anymore.
