411’s WWE Smackdown Report 10.10.08
Posted by Scott Rutherford on 10.10.2008
Big Show gloats, Koslov just wants to hurt people and HHH defends the big one in the main event.
Welcome all. I'm your interim Smackdown! recapper Scott. For those who have read me before know what they're in for, for those who haven't…I am not a great play-by-play man so be forewarned of the sucktitude. So why I am recapping SD? Well, we're short a warm body for the job.
So if any one is interested in becoming 411's full-time recapper, drop us a sample via email and I will forward it on to the proper authorities. Anyone looking to give it a go much has full intentions of doing this every week and has a review up within an hour of shows end.
411 NEEDS YOU!
Highlights of No Mercy and The Big Show handing The Undertake his ass.
JR and Tazz welcome us and pimp tonight's main event title match between HHH and The Big Show.
- Vicki Guerrero is in the ring. Two weeks ago she was savagely attacked by The Undertaker putting her back into the wheelchair and neck brace. She can still hear the vertebrae compressing. She gloats about the demise of The Undertaker at the hands of The Big Show. TBS makes his way out and he's almost whistling a happy tune as he walks down the aisle. "I told you so," he states. He told us exactly what was going to happen and he delivered. More highlights of the big blows from No Mercy. He claims his fist is the equalizer and says the while people say you never knew what hit them, HHH knows what's coming and TBS while be the champ by the end of the night.
Vladimir Kozlov is now out. He throws down a challenge to the winner. Show thinks that's ill advised because #1 Show is a giant and #2 he's an American…..rrrrright.
Match #1 – "Brie" "Bella" vs. Natalie Neidhardt w/Victoria
Catfight to start. Nattie takes control but misses a charge to the corner, BB hits a sloppy cross body from the top rope (JR tries to sell it as a foot slipping) which gets a quick one count. They both fight over a backslide which BB wins and gets a two count. Nattie charges BB in the corner again and misses for the second time be turns it around into a big clothesline to take control and applies the sleeper. BB works out into a cover on Nattie for a surprise 2 count, Nattie clotheslines again but misses an elbow drop and BB attempts to go under the ring but Victoria ain't having that and goes underneath to get her. She comes back out with a shocked look on her face and it's HORNSWOGGLE! Horny does the mini Thesz Press and either tries to eat Victoria or stuck his tongue up her nose. Vic runs for the hills and BB pulls the slight of hand and gets the roll up win.
(This match has been repeated for weeks now. People know what's happening with Brie Bella and they need to pay it off soon. Match itself was quick and sloppy thanks to BB. ½*)
- Funaki appearance backstage! He lets us know he's still Smackdown's #1 announcer. R-Truth interrupts and he wants to know what Funaki's full name is. Kung Fu Naki. R-T thinks this is the greatest thing he's ever heard and co-ops "Kung Fu Fighting" and drops about 15 Japanese clichés in 30 seconds.
- HHH is voting on the special guest ref for Cyber Sunday. He's having a hard time deciding between Stone Cold and HBK ya know. Jeff Hardy joins him and says he was the man at No Mercy and gives him props for the win. Jeff wishes HHH luck for the nights title match and he's out. But wait, he's back and wants to challenge the winner….which he doubts will be HHH.
- Shelton Benjamin informs us that despite the current economic woes, there's always on thing you can bet on and that's the Gold Standard.
Match #2 Shelton Benjamin vs. R-Truth – Non Title Match
Brawl to start and Shelton dominates and beats R-T down. Nasty kick to the back of Truths head and then he throws him to the floor and runs him into the barricade. Truth rolls back in and catches Benjamin with a spear and returns the violence from the start of the match. Shelton counters a whip into the ropes with a clothesline and hits a rear chin lock. Ron powers out with a side suplex. Big right hands by R-T and nails the corkscrew forearm for a 2 count. Shelton regains control but an attempted tilt-a-whirl gets reversed into a 3 count for R-Truth.
(While a little short, this match was fast and full of nice move/counter-move. Shelton needs to get some sort of ascendancy or else he'll start looking like a jobber again after building him back up for months. **1/2)
Match #3: Jeff Hardy vs. MVP
JR lets us know that MVP needs one more win to get his performance bonus.
Lock-up to start. MVP gets a quick 2 off an inside cradle and then another 2 count off a roll-up. Hardy comes back with some right hands, falls forward on a vertical suplex and heads up too the top rope for the swanton and MVP rolls out as we go to a break…
…we're back as MVP takes control. He gets some knees into Hardy's mid-section, bodyslam and a knee drop gets a 2 count. MVP applies a seated abdominal stretch, Jeff fights up with a few kicks but MVP quickly gets back on top and applied a reverse bear hug on the mat. Jeff fights up and nails a face buster for a two count but MVP gets right back to the reverse bear hug. Jeff fights out with the knees again but MVP cuts him off by running him into the corner turnbuckle. He attempts a side suplex, which Hardy blocks and he starts throwing the big right hands. Whisper in the wind gets 2, then a standing drop kick seats MVP down in the corner. Hardy hits the top rope assisted boots to the face and then again to the back. MVP is prone, swanton finishes off MVP for the three count.
(Great free to air match between these two. Hardy has stepped it up a notch in the past couple weeks as he grows into his main vent spot. MVP was game and the results showed. Only complaints are MVP working the back didn't come back into the play when hitting the swanton would have left Hardy hurt more than usual. ***3/4)
- Kozlov is back down and Jeff is all "bring it Ruskie" and promptly gets owned of big Vlad.
- Maria is out as your guest ring announcer.
Match #4 – Jesse, Festus, Carlito & Primo vs. Ryder, Hawkins, Braddock & Dykstra
Slow Festus is a little horny for Maria.
Bell rings and Festus cleans house, Carlito starts proper and gets a quick moonsalt on Ryder. He then gets caught in the heel corner and gets worked over. Hawkins tags himself in and hits a snapping neck breaker for 2, In tags Kenny and gets the double axe handle form the top rope for 2. Kenny works over Carlito and applies a chin lock. Carlito hits the jawbreaker to get out and nails a hurricunrana on Kenny and tags in Festus who promptly turn Kenny into his bitch. Festus clears the heel corner, big boot on Dykstra and the pin gets broken up by Braddock. Carlito takes care of him while Jesse and Primo hit stereo plancha's on Ryder & Hawkins on the floor. Festus hits his big F5-type slam (do we have a name for this?) and we have our winners. After the bell, Festus tries to mack on Maria again.
(Short and not really worth anything. Nice to see some undercard guys get face time but if your going to do a big six or eight-man match, give them 10-15 minutes to work the crowd who has been hot all night. *1/2)
The Great Khali is in the ring. We get clips from his appearance on Jackass where Johnny Knoxville asks if he has a big dick. Khali acts all offended…which is lost when we come back to the ring and see the big goof smiling. We're then treated to the Raw Kiss Cam from Monday as we see Khali lay the moves on Lillian. We are going to get a repeat performance after his fantastic match against three men!
Match #5: The Great Khali vs. Three Jobbers
Two of the jobbers run away, the other one dies when Khali give him the big chop to the head.
(Dud. N/R)
We get a few tasty selections for the Kiss Cam but the big fatty is selected. Khali seems not that keen, but does the job….much quicker than when he kissed Lillian.
Match #6: HHH vs. The Big Show – WWE Title Match
Man, they're certainly hyping this big. Let's hope they deliver.
Show tries to corner HHH to start but Trips is too quick and lands a few rights in the process. TBS is having none of that and rams HHH into the turnbuckle, the force of which send HHH over the top rope to the floor. Show follows but HHH manages to evade and ram TBS into the post. Show rolls back in the ring and takes out Hunter as he tries to enter. Second entry attempt by HHH and TBS tries to take him out again but The Cerebral Assassin manages to guillotine him on the top rope and makes his way back in only to get hit by a big side walk slam.
Weird edit here as the SD symbol appears and we cut to HHH caught in a head vice. Would be interested to know if the WWE made that edit or was it Fox8 here in Australia.
Back to the action, HHH fights up but Show keeps control with the vice. Finally HHH fights back but Show nails the spinning leg drop and gets a close two count. Charge by Big Show to the corner misses and tries again only for HHH to jump on his back and hit the sleeper. TBS flips over his shoulder and but misses an elbow drop. HHH tees off with the big right hands, face buster and tries to hit the pedigree but he can't lock it in as Show picks him up on his back and drops HHH with all his weight on top.
Both men are down but Show beats the count first and makes for the big right hand, HHH ducks and slugs away but runs into a chokeslam. HHH is down but TBS doesn't go for the cover but instead he tries for the Undertaker Killer Rabbit Punch…gong…lights down…lights up and UT is here and shit is on! ‘Taker unleashes with the soup bones and Show can't get a lick in and he heads for the back…gong…lights out…lights on and UT is standing behind him in the aisle and this time Undertaker fights him to the back…
…and Kozlov makes his way to the ring. HHH tries to trade blows but eats the big head butt to the chest. In runs Jeff Hardy and he promptly eats a big shoulder block. Finally HHH and Hardy buy a clue and double team the Russian as he retreats up the aisle to a big USA chant.
The faces stand tall and then kick, wham Twist of Fate, Jeff shows he ain't no ones fool and take out HHH as we close the show with Hardy staring down Vlad.
(This was working before the run-ins. HHH sold more for TBS than any time they have previously met letting The Big Show dominate like all big men should in matches. I would have liked more of the psychology of Trips avoiding the big right hand since it's been drilled into us how dangerous it is. I also would have liked Show to get the big head punch in before the UT interference because it would have driven home even more how deadly the punch was. ***1/4)
The 411: Two really good matches, things are moving in the main event, R-Truth is being brought along nicely although the rest of the undercard is treading water. Strong show this week and it's the first time in a long while where I'm looking forward to next weeks show.
Festus and Khali need to form a tag team. I like how they are getting time to shine.

I watched baseball tonight, but I tivoed SmackDown, on wwe.com it says Triple H will defend at Cyber Sunday against either Jeff Hardy, Kozlov or have a triple threat against both men. I wonder why Big Show was left out, maybe he'll have a rematch with Undertaker.

The Bellas are the best thing to enter a Womens Division since Mickie James/Trish Stratus feud. They are so refreshing and different that I look forward to seeing them more than both Raw and TNA's womens divisions combined

WWE has never had identical twin females or a tag team comprised of two actual sisters. Not many "firsts" are left, but the Bellas are a first for WWE.

Tonight's SD was very solid all around. Good efforts by everyone involved, and Khali does not discriminate. Big, small, short, tall, he loves them all.
And the Bellas have been training for a little over a year, and are already past Maria AND (dare I say it?) Kelly Kelly ... Kelly. They're hot and they have charisma that can make up for their lack of in ring experience.
All I ask is that Natalya get a win, and that this storyline FINALLY reveals the 'other' Bella.

I miss K-Kwiks getting rowdy song... its much better than Whats up!
Hopefully Benjamin will get a good clean victory over him in a meaningful PPV match at some point.
I am digging that 360 spin thing he does though... its pretty cool.

The Mickie James/Trish Stratus feud was a million times better than this crap. This is one of the worst things in the entire women's division and is making two talented women in Victoria and Natalya look completely stupid and weak. The match between Natalya and Bella this week was unforgivable. Victoria and Natalya should either be in a title picture or building credibility to do so, not being made to look like idiots on a weekly basis.

It's nice to see that Khali is human and can laugh. But, where is this leading? I know there's the showdown with Knoxville but then what? Does Khali turn face as the fun loving giant?

"Victoria and Natalya should either be in a title picture or building credibility to do so, not being made to look like idiots on a weekly basis."
They shouldn't be beating the Bellas because it kills the entire storyline they are doing. The Bellas switching has to actually lead to victories. Plus, Victoria and Natalya kick Brie's ass and lose because Brie is cheating.
Posted By: Guest#0306 (Guest) on October 11, 2008 at 01:47 PM
Anyone know the name of the 2 jobbers Khali squashed? I think ones from my area but i'd like to know for sure.

I'll just say this when it comes to the Benjamin/Truth feud on where you commented on...Truth got those two wins to give him a title shot for Cyber Sunday and Benjamin will win the payoff match. He'll probably lay Truth out in the next week during a segment or after he beats someone like Kenny next week. Surprisd you couldn't see that coming, Scott.

Victoria and Natalya should beat the Bellas to regain some much-needed credibility and to advance this crappy storyline. The switching thing doesn't protect Victoria and Natalya, it has been made blatantly obvious for weeks that the Bellas have been switching and it just makes Victoria and Natalya look stupid not to realise it and the Bellas who are supposed to be the faces look like total heels. It just needs to end and the best way to do that is for Victoria and Natalya to expose the twins and then beat them so they can move on to trading victories in tagteam matches. The longer the Bellas outsmart Victoria and Natalya in this ridiculous way the more damage is done to both Victoria's and Natalya's credibility. Putting over new stars is one thing, but putting new stars over while blatantly burying to far more talented stars is just stupid.

To be buried, you have to heat that get be taken away. Natalya never had any. Also, you aren't buried if the crowd still likes you. Victoria is still popular despite all her losses. Plus, like another poster said, Brie only wins because she cheats.
The reaction to the Bellas' angle has been positive, and most don't mind them winning.
I will say, though, they should just reveal that there are two Bellas because it is pretty obvious.

Wrong, RVD was buried countless times and he didn't lose his heat. Buried is when someone is made to look continuously weak, which is exactly what the WWE is doing to Victoria in this storyline. In all fairness Natalya hasn't been buried yet, she's just been made to look stupid, but a couple more losses and she'll be in the same boat as Victoria. As for Natalya not having heat, personally I think she did, but then she lost it by losing to Taker's bitch, and she needs to be built up not destroyed further with this storyline. And as I said before the Bellas cheating in this way does not protect anyone and just makes their opponents look stupid while making them look like heels.

RVD was buried but stayed just as over? So you don't have to be hurt to be buried? Just losing matches without losing any heat is being buried? Okay, then.
And, if you switch things, you could bury the Bellas. Brie and Victoria or Natalya wrestle for a few minutes, Brie switches with Nicole, and then Nicole gets her ass kicked and pinned. There, now you've made the Bellas look bad. Two of them can't beat Victoria or Natalya.
Natalya's a great wrestler, but she hasn't be able get heat to save her life in the six months she's been on Smackdown, before or after losing to Michelle McCool. And why would losing to Michelle kill her heat? Maryse can still get herself heat after cleanly losing to Michelle at least 3 times, so the more talented Natalya should be able to find a way to make sure that losses don't hurt her.
Victoria is no worse off than she was before this whole angle started, especially since she is just being cheated when a few months ago, she really was portrayed as stupid, falling off the ropes and tripping over her own feet. This actually is the least stupid she's looked in months.

At this point that's sounding like a pretty good idea, but you can do it with out burying the Bellas. The Bellas have been beating Victoria for weeks now so her discovering what they're doing, getting the original sister back in match and defeating her wouldn't do that much damage to the Bellas and then they can at least advance this terrible storyline. Plus, it would give Victoria back some credibility.
"Natalya's a great wrestler, but she hasn't be able get heat to save her life in the six months she's been on Smackdown, before or after losing to Michelle McCool."
I disagree and I think Natalya had at least some momentum going for her before she was jobbed out and shoved aside.
"Why would losing to Michelle kill her heat?"
Because Michelle is a vastly inferior wrestler and it makes Natalya look like a total joke to lose to her, especially clean.
"Victoria is no worse off than she was before this whole angle started, especially since she is just being cheated when a few months ago, she really was portrayed as stupid, falling off the ropes and tripping over her own feet. This actually is the least stupid she's looked in months."
So you'd like to see Victoria get made to look stupid week in week out rather than try and rebuild some of her credibility? This is a former champion and one of the best women the WWE has but she's treated like a joke, and I am aware this is just one in a long line of things but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be called what it is, a waste of a perfectly good talent.

"Because Michelle is a vastly inferior wrestler and it makes Natalya look like a total joke to lose to her, especially clean."
Natalya is good enough to recover from any loss, but she's not doing so. Plus, she really didn't gain as much momentum as she should have from the previous three months where she was undefeated, squashing Cherry and Kelly like bugs, and Cole, Foley, and JR were singing her praises. I really don't know what the problem is as a talented wrestler who rarely loses should be very over.
"So you'd like to see Victoria get made to look stupid week in week out rather than try and rebuild some of her credibility? Her and Natalya should get wins over the Bellas in tag matches or singles matches where the Bellas get caught switching. Remember, when does Brie make the switch? When she's getting her ass kicked. Brie is "undefeated" yet she hasn't actually scored a pinfall yet. It's always Nicole, the one who hasn't been been getting beat up for the last several minutes. Victoria was a clown for months for months before this, tripping and following all over the place. Now, she pretty much squashes Brie ever week, and Brie and Nicole still have never beat her in any meaningful way.

Do you mean burying the Bellas is a good idea? That would be horrible. Their act is new and different, and WWE should never try to harm an angle that's working. However, everybody should know by now that there are two of them, and they should get caught soon.

And yet it's Victoria (or in this week's case Natalya) who takes the pin and ends up scratching her head and looking stupid. Plus you're making it sound like a squash match which it isn't. Brie and Victoria/Natalya trade moves, have a back and forth match and then when Victoria/Natalya have the upper hand Brie makes the switch and then easily defeats Victoria/Natalya thus making them look weak and stupid.
"Do you mean burying the Bellas is a good idea? That would be horrible."
I agree burying the Bellas would be a bad idea but it's better to make two people look weak than four people, which is exactly what this storyline is doing.
"Their act is new and different, and WWE should never try to harm an angle that's working. However, everybody should know by now that there are two of them, and they should get caught soon."
That's a matter of opinion. As far as I can see this angle is a total failure making everybody involved look weak and needs to move on.

Stupid? Maybe, although if they look stupid, so do JR and Tazz for not getting it, either.
Weak? No, because they've been wrestling and Nicole, the one who is pinning them, is completely fresh. If Nicole comes out from under the ring and gets beat, that would make her look bad. Two people who are cheating should be able to beat one.
"I agree burying the Bellas would be a bad idea but it's better to make two people look weak than four people, which is exactly what this storyline is doing."
The Bellas have to be booked strong right now. First impressions are everything. If they were doing the switches and losing right now, they would look ineffective right at the start of their WWE careers, losing despite cheating. Once they are established, they shouldn't win all the time. But for now, they should win a lot, especially since they've been having 2-on-1 advantages.
"That's a matter of opinion. As far as I can see this angle is a total failure making everybody involved look weak and needs to move on."
Nobody knew who Brie Bella was three months ago. Now, she is "undefeated" for almost two months instead of just being some jobber (although, technically, it's Nicole who is undefeated). Plus, the fans know something funny is going on with her, and people are wondering when she or someone else is going to reveal how she's been doing her "trick". When will she get caught? Who will catch her? How will it happen? That kind of intrigue for a rookie is a good thing.
And, again, I do believe that very soon, someone should catch them switching. Once that happens, they both should be trading victories and losses with Victoria, Natalya, Maryse, whoever.

"Stupid? Maybe, although if they look stupid, so do JR and Tazz for not getting it, either."
The announcers always play dumb to these type of things, but yes, it could be argued this angle is making JR and Tazz look stupid as well.
"Weak? No, because they've been wrestling and Nicole, the one who is pinning them, is completely fresh. If Nicole comes out from under the ring and gets beat, that would make her look bad. Two people who are cheating should be able to beat one."
Yes, because two people defeating one continuously makes that one person look weak. The cheating only goes so far as an argument, when it is done continuously, and someone continuously loses because of it it makes them look weak. The odds were even this week, two on two, so it would have done little or no damage to the Bellas if Victoria had exposed their bullshit, thrown the original sister back in the ring and had Natalya beat her after her a decent fight, because the Bellas have been making Victoria and Natalya look like fools for weeks.
"The Bellas have to be booked strong right now. First impressions are everything. If they were doing the switches and losing right now, they would look ineffective right at the start of their WWE careers, losing despite cheating. Once they are established, they shouldn't win all the time. But for now, they should win a lot, especially since they've been having 2-on-1 advantages."
First impressions are very important, but the Bellas have made their first impressions and now they need to lose. With Victoria and Natalya teaming up the Bellas won't have a 2 on 1 advantage.
"Nobody knew who Brie Bella was three months ago. That kind of intrigue for a rookie is a good thing."
I will agree this terrible storyline has created some intrigue for the rookies, but in doing so they have further damaged both Victoria's and Natalya's credibility while providing cheap and meaningless wins for the Bellas.

I forgot about this, but Victoria had Brie caught as Brie was going under the ring. She probably could see both Bellas, but Hornswoggle appeared and chased her away.
Natalya was looking at this, then looked at the floor. Brie poked her out her head, winked up at Natalya, went back underneath, and Nicole showed up behind Natalya. Natalya being confused in this situation makes sense as it was odd, and multiple things happened so quickly.

Agreed. No point in dragging it out any longer.

This is the most important Victoria been in months, and losses in competitive matches are less damaging than her falling off the ropes and being unable to remove her shirt like she was doing 6-7 months ago.
And if Natalya couldn't get a reaction after being undefeated for three months and being the niece of one of the most popular wrestlers ever, then losing to the Bellas or beating both of them by herself at the same time won't change things for her, either.
