411's WWE Raw Report 01.12.09
Posted by Rob McNew on 01.12.2009

-Welcome to 411's Raw report. We're in my backyard tonight Sioux City, IA. I made the decision not to attend tonight's show because I figured a three hour drive to Northwest Iowa in early January might be a bit dicey. Turns out it was a good decision as we've got a fucking blizzard blowing through Iowa right now. I am attending tomorrow nights Smackdown tapings in Omaha though so long as this storm is just a one nighter as predicted. Cross your fingers for no transmission problems due to the weather in Sioux City, which as I understand it is worse than it is here just south of Des Moines. If anything good comes out of the storm its that when they show the outside shot of the arena maybe Michael Cole will scream "VINTAGE IOWA!" Thats all for the weather report that I'm sure you are all so interested in; now to the wrestling.

-Live from the Tyson Foods Center in Sioux City, IA

-Hosted by Michael Cole & Jerry "The King" Lawler

-We open with JBL and Shawn inside JBL's limo. JBL tells Shawn he's competing against Cena tonight and then its on to Wrestlemania. JBL says he knows Shawn thinks it could have been him, but he fell on hard times. He tells him tonight he's not fighting for a title, but for his employer. JBL tells him tonight he can consider this his Wrestlemania. Shawn shoots him a disgusted look as JBL leaves the limo.

-Stephanie McMahon joins us to tell us we're two weeks from the Royal Rumble. She says we're looking forward to the Rumble and also to next week when her father returns to Raw. She begins to suck up to Dad when Chris Jericho interrupts. Jericho informs her that she is a liar. He says she's no worse than the hypocrites in the arena. He tells Steph she is scared to death of her Dad's return because she's not running the show anymore. Jericho says when Vince returns he will listen to Jericho's protest and remove JBL and insert Jericho into the title match. Jericho goes on to say Vince knows how to run this show. Stephanie tells him Raw is her show. Stephanie says her dad her supports her. Jericho asks her if he supported her decision to make Mike Adamle the GM. He says Adamle lowered the bar so far that he made Steph seem competent by example. Stephanie corrects him by saying Adamle was Shane's call. She goes on to tell him if he spent as much time worrying about his career as he did her leadership skills maybe he'd still be World Champion. Stephanie says the World Title contract is done and will be signed next week in the ring. She tells him to focus on the Royal Rumble because thats the closest to the title he's going to get. She starts to tell him he has a match tonight, but Jericho interrupts saying he will not compete until the title is on the line. He says he's above that. Stephanie angerly shoots back that he's not above that or anyone else in the arena. Jericho says he's done talking to her, because she's a lame duck. The real McMahon is coming back next week. She tells him its not next week its this week and she's still in charge. He asks her what she's gonna do about it? Stephanie informs him that he lost his chance to compete in the Rumble and that he'll never compete for the World Title. Jericho says he doesn't give a damn what she says. Stephanie tells him to give a damn about this and informs him that he's fired!

-In the back Jericho is escorted from the building by security.

The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio
Cole confirms that Miz is in the Royal Rumble match. Miz grabs a side headlock and sends Mysterio down with a shoulderblock. Following a leapfrog Mysterio gets a dropkick. Miz tries a corner charge but runs into the boot of Mysterio. Miz catches Mysterio out of the corner and slams him into the turnbuckle. That is followed up by a running knee to the chin of Mysterio picking up two. Miz grabs a double arm submission which Mysterio fights out of. Miz quickly regains control by driving Mysterio's face to the mat picking up a two count. Miz tries a backdrop but gets kicked in the face instead. That allows Mysterio to hit the springboard seated senton for a two count. Mysterio hits a drop toehold to set up a 619 but that misses. Rey gets backdropped over the top, but lands on the apron. Rey tries for a springboard sunset flip but Miz counters into his own pin combo for two. Rey counters out of a backslide attempt with an armdrag. That sets up a hurracanrana into the ropes. 619 and springboard splash finishes for Rey. Any doubt who WWE views as the future star of Miz and Morrison after that? Mike Knox attacks Mysterio after the bell which is becoming a Raw tradition. Mysterio ends up fighting him off this time by fighting him off and sending him back to the floor with a hurracanrana.
Winner: Rey Mysterio (Pinfall-Springboard Splash *1/2)

-Candice Michelle is talking about Vince coming back. CM Punk is shown as the guy she is talking to, but he's paying no attention as he's focused on his IC Title match, which is next.

-A video hyping Vince's return is shown. Lots of clips of announcer Vince are shown, most of this is recycled from the McMahon DVD.

WWE Intercontinental Championship Match/DQ Title Change Rule Waived: CM Punk vs. William Regal (c) (w. Layla)
Stephanie was very clear about Regal being Disqualified costing him the title. She said nothing about count outs. Next week Raw is in Punk's hometown. Do the math. Regal is back to wearing that absurd top on his wrestling gear. Punk takes Regal down with a shoulderblock. Punk ducks a European uppercut into a backslide, but Regal escapes even a one count. Punk grabs a side headlock, but Regal powers out sending Punk into the buckle. Punk gets a headlock takedown and gets a one count. Regal is sent into the buckle and hits a bulldog. Cole says "Jericho could be closing in on the Championship." Say Steph, I think you fired the wrong guy. Punk follows Regal in the corner but gets taken down to the 2nd turnbuckle. Regal pounds away in the corner but when coming in Regal gets a shot the lower abdominal. The ref thinks thats a low blow and DQ's Punk. Well that was less predictible, and a hell of a lot more stupid than just doing the count out. Guys punch and kick all day with nothing but warnings but a borderline low blow that was unintentional is a DQ? Okay then.
Winner: STILL WWE Intercontinental Champion: William Regal (Disqualification-Low Blow *)

-Mickie James and Cody Rhodes are in the back. Mickie is complaining about the blizzard. Me too dear. Cody doesn't even know why they have to be in Iowa. Thats cold man; we're good people. Manu and Sim Snuka interrupt. They're angry that Rhodes betrayed them. Cody asks why they're taking this so personally, and if they were in his shoes they'd have done the same thing. Manu tells him they're taking Orton tonight and he's either with them or against them. He says they brought back up. Another second generation star who feels the same way they do.

-Todd Grisham meets up with William Regal. He says he's satisfied this challenge is over. Stephanie interrupts and says she's not satisfied. Since they're even up one and one they'll meet next week in a no DQ match. Wow, didn't see that coming.

-Stone Cold Steve Austin is announced as the first inductee of the 2009 WWE Hall of Fame. A great video tribute to him is shown. Next to Hogan there is not a single man who is more deserving of a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame. A perfect choice to headline the class at a Texas Wrestlemania.

-JBL asks Shawn what he thinks, is Steph going to still be in charge when they get to Wrestlemania. He mentions Jericho getting fired, but tells Shawn not to worry about him because he took care of his money. He tells Shawn he can't lose tonight with him is corner. Shawn tells JBL that if this is his Wrestlemania he won't need JBL in his corner to beat Cena. What about Wrestlemania 23? He says he's going to prove once again why he's the headliner, the showstopper, and the main event.

-More Vince hype is shown. Its a "you're fired" montage. In what I'm sure was simply a coincidence the first two guys shown being fired are Kurt Angle and Mick Foley. Completely by chance I'm sure.

-Mike Knox vs. Rey Mysterio is announced for next week.

Kane vs. Randy Orton (w. Cody Rhodes)
Orton attacks quickly pounding away at Kane in the corner. The ref pulls him off and that allows Kane to come back with an uppercut and an elbow. Kane pounds away in the corner with a kick, punch, and back elbow. Kane follows that up by clotheslining Orton to the floor as we head to break. Back from commercial with Orton in control with a side headlock. Kane fights to his feet but Orton pounds him back with a series of punches followed by a boot the face. Orton stands over Kane allowing Kane to fire back with an uppercut. It only stuns Orton who comes back with a boot the face. Knee drop by Orton is followed by a series of stomps getting one. Orton maintains control by raking Kane's eyes with his boot. Orton stomps away at the midsection of Kane before grabbing another headlock. Kane is able to fight of that suplexing his way out of it. Kane fires away with right hands followed by a big boot. A whip to the corner is followed by a pair of clotheslines for Orton. Sidewalk slam picks up two for Kane. Kane goes for the chokeslam but Orton kicks his way out of that. Swinging neckbreaker sets up an RKO attempt, but Kane counters out of it. Kane goes to the top rope but is met with a one legged dropkick. Orton goes for the cover and Kane gets the shoulder up at two but referee Scott Armstrong counts three anyway. Kane chases Armstrong out. Thats certainly interesting. I can't be the only one who is thinking Armstrong is technically second generation am I?
Winner: Randy Orton (Pinfall-One Legged Dropkick *1/4)

-Manu and Snuka come out to ask Cody if he's with them or against them. They bring out their backup, and its Ted Dibiase. The four circle Orton in the ring, but Dibiase turns on Manu and Snuka. Orton, Rhodes, and Dibiase beat down Manu and Snuka. Orton asks Rhodes which one he wants. Cody picks Sim and delivers a roll of the dice to him. Dibiase takes out Manu with the Million Dollar Dream slam. Crowd gives them a mixed reaction bordering on a face pop, which probably wasn't exactly the desired reaction, but at least the group is over.

-Recap of Jericho getting fired is shown.

-Todd Grisham is with John Cena. Cena says he knows all about the Royal Rumble after he snuck in and won last year. He says the Rumble is the most exciting, unpredictible event of the year. He says this year he has to defend against JBL. He says regardless of what you think of JBL he is a former WWE Champion, and has been responsible for some of his most brutal matches. He says JBL has bought himself the best, and now Shawn is firmly entrenched in JBL's camp. He says tonight he has to compete against Shawn in his Wrestlemania. So be it says the champ.

Beth Phoenix & Jillian Hall vs. Kelly Kelly & Melina
Rosa Mendez attacks Melina before the bell as she snuck in this week dressed as one of Melina's paparazzi. Security escorts her out, as Kelly goes to assist. That allows Beth and Jillian to attack in the aisle. Beth slams Melina into the barricade. Jillian gets a camera for Beth who takes Melina's picture in the aisle. Match is cancelled I guess?
No Match

-More Vince hype, this time we see Vince being inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

-Cole & Lawler run down the Royal Rumble card as it stands now. If you're scoring at home we've got the Rumble Match, Jeff Hardy vs. Edge, JBL vs. John Cena, & Melina vs. Beth Phoenix

-Orton is with Dibiase and Rhodes. Orton says when he kicked Ted in the head he was just knocking some sense into him. Orton says they both proved they want to be part of the Legacy. Dibiase says the past is the past, and its on to the Royal Rumble. Dibiase says they're all in the Rumble, but Orton reminds them there can only be one winner.

-The Job Squad of Jamie Noble, Dolph Ziggler, Goldust and Cryme Tyme wait outside Stephanie's office to try to persuade her to give them a spot in the Rumble. Santino emerges from the office to tell them he has gotten a spot. Dolph takes the opportunity to introduce himself to Jamie, but gets rebuffed.

Shawn Michaels (w. JBL) vs. John Cena
Shawn comes out in JBL's limo and with JBL's music which is a nice touch. They play "Sexy Boy" when he gets out of the limo. Personally I would have played JBL's music the whole way, that would add to the heat. Thats a minor complaint. My clock shows we've still got a half hour left. Thats a good sign. Hopefully these two can save a show that has been criminally short on wrestling. History has shown have the ability to deliver a classic when given proper time. Cena offers a pre match hand which is granted by Shawn, and with that we go to break. Bell rings as we return from break, so we didn't miss anything. Shawn grabs arm bar and takes Shawn over. Cena counters out with a head scissor. Shawn takes Cena down again with a headlock, and again its countered with the head scissor. They do the spot a third time, but this time Shawn is frustrated and shoves off Cena. That is met with a clothesline from Cena. Shawn grabs an armbar, which Cena counters out with an elbow. Cena delivers a hiptoss and drop toehold. He tries for the STF, but Shawn counters. Sweet Chin Music is threatened but Cena ducks out of the way. Lockup into the corner sees Shawn take control with a pair of vicious chops. Cena turns that around with a series of fists. Shawn again turns that around with chops. Cena reverses a whip into the corner and catches Shawn with a backdrop. Cena then sends Shawn to the floor with a backdrop over the top. Shawn catches Cena on his way back in dropping his head on the top rope. That allows Shawn to gain control with a stomp and a kick to the face. Elbow drop by Shawn is followed with another series of chops. Cena again reverses a whip attempt by Shawn and hits a pair of clotheslines. A whip by Cena does work as Shawn goes crashing into the corner. Cena hits a bulldog for two. Fisherman's Suplex attempt is countered by Shawn allowing him to lock in a figure four. Cena rolls it over and Shawn then breaks the hold. Shawn rams Cena into the turnbuckle. A third whip attempt by Shawn again fails as again he's reversed into the corner, this time landing on the top rope. Kick by Cena from there sets up an FU attempt. Shawn counters out of that but runs into kick. Blockbuster by Cena sends him to the top rope for a legdrop attempt. Shawn moves out of the way and that allows Shawn to lock in a crossface. Cena tries to power to his feet, but Shawn was able to settle back and bring Cena back to the ground still in the hold. Cena eventually is able to drag himself to the ropes to break the hold. Shawn kicks Cena to the floor as we head to break. Back from break with Cena in control firing Shawn into the ring. Sidewalk slam from Cena picks up a two count. Side suplex picks up another two count for Cena. Whip to the corner by Cena is followed with a kick to the gut and a suplex again picking up two. Cena sets up for the FU, but Shawn grabs the ropes to counter. We go deep into the way back machine as Cena grabs a bear hug. Shawn powers out of that with an elbow. Cena fires back with a right hand and goes back to the bear hug. Cena drives Shawn into the buckle and sends him to the other corner with an Irish whip. Cena charges Michaels but runs into the boot. Shawn delivers a chop as they start trade blows. Shawn gets sent for the ride but comes off with a flying forearm. Shawn nips up and delivers an inverted atomic drop. A second attempt is countered as Cena hits a pair of shoulderblocks. Protoplex attempt is countered into a pinning combo for two. Shawn gets a bodyslam and goes to the top for the elbow. Cena is up though and meets Cena on the top. Cena goes for an FU from the top but Shawn counters into a powerbomb pin combo getting a two count. Shawn again heads to the top rope for the elbow again, this time Cena moves out of the way. Cena goes to the top rope and hits the legdrop. And delivers the five knuckle shuffle delivering the "you can't see me" to JBL. Cena again goes for the FU, but Shawn counters into a DDT getting a two count. Shawn goes to the top again and this time hits the elbow drop. Shawn tunes up the band for Sweet Chin Music, but Cena ducks the kick attempt and this time hits the FU. Shawn kicks out of that at two. Cena tries to pick up Shawn, but Shawn hits Sweet Chin Music out of nowhere. Shawn covers, but that only gets two as well. Both men fight to their feet again, Cena again goes for the FU, but Shawn again counters this time into a sunset flip getting two. Cena immediately locks in the STF right in front of JBL. Shawn fights to the rope, and gets an assist from JBL pushing the bottom rope to him to break the hold. Shawn fights to his feet, but runs into another FU attempt. Shawn counters that by sending Cena to the ropes. JBL provides a distraction to Cena who turns into Sweet Chin Music which this time finishes. Absolutely tremendous match that totally saved the show. Shawn truly brings out the best in Cena. Yes, its only January 12th, but I believe we have the very early leader for WWE Match of the Year. Granted that only encompasses like 15 matches or so, but still.
Winner: Shawn Michaels (Pinfall-Sweet Chin Music ****)

-After the match JBL stands over the fallen Cena as we fade out

-Show was pretty lackluster overall until the main event, but oh what a main event it was. Shawn showed once again why even in the twilight of his career he is still truly the showstopper. It wasn't all the HBK show either, as Cena more than carried his end of the deal. It wasn't on the same level as the Wrestlemania match or the rematch in London, but this was still an epic match. That's all for this week. Next week the Boss returns.

Raw sucked, as usual. WWE is bland and stale, and only the pathetic little douchebag marks cant see it.

Even without the awesome main event, this show would still be a very good one for the Austin video. Just so much memories. I'll be honest I wasn't around the 80s to watch Flair at his best and didn't really get as emotional as some did last year with his Hall of Fame induction, but I have a been a fan of wrestling practically since Austin started out with the WWE and he means a lot to me and many others who started watching in and around that time.

Micheals vs Cena was great match but not **** IMO.

First time I saw RAW in how long and I gotta say Stephanie McMahon is fine as hell. I can't be mad at HHH no more after seeing her for the first time since 2003. Layla still number one in WWE as far as women though.

Rest of RAW was pretty good. But what's up with Orton's Legacy. From my understanding from reading the RAW reports in the last couple months was that Orton kicked everyone but Cody out the Legacy. (Which will happen next week) Who does he want?

Oh and Orton will win the Rumble. Jericho will be back next week. Cena and HBK tore the house down again. Damn good show.

Only thing I hope is McMahon doesn't take up too much RAW time next week

That's all for this week. Next week the Boss returns.

***

Great, here come 3,000-plus fags with their, "Oh RVD is coming back next week" comments.

And you can't forget the obvious question, "will it be a one-shot deal."

It's 2009, pissants. Step your game up. However, if Jude Terror wants to return and talk about Randy savage dropping elbows, that would be fine.

Cena loses, can we stop now already with the "he never loses" talk?

That was the worst Shawn/Cena match ever. My God. Can you do a few more rest holds guys? I didn't completely fall asleep.

Match of the year candidate? So what, if a free TV match lasts 15 minutes or more it's automatically a MotY candidate? Because you couldn't be saying that based on the actual quality.

Side note: please stop doing that top rope legdrop, Cena. I'm not saying that because you NEVER connect with it enough to be believable (although that's true.) But I just get the feeling that one day you're going to miss that in a way that causes your leg to snap like uncooked spaghetti.

Here's my big problem with the HBK angle - JBL isn't requiring him to do anything morally reprehensible. Instead of telling Shawn to go out and injure Cena, he simply has them wrestle. It makes things feel watered down, and aside from JBL costing Shawn a title match at the Royal Rumble, there's really nothing that has cost Shawn any honor or embarrassment in this angle. So what if Michaels works for JBL? If he's not being forced to make the hard choice consistently, then who cares?

There are a couple of things I can think of that should have been done tonight: one, as stated above, have HBK do something to really injure Cena. It builds tension for the Rumble match, makes JBL look like a bigger jerk, and (considering his moral and spiritual standings) puts Shawn in a very guilty place. Or, two, have the match be for the title. Have HBK win, and then make the hard choice of whether he'll lay down for JBL at the Rumble. Either would have made me want to watch the title match much more.

Is there any doubt that Shawn Michaels and Kurt Angle put on the best matches.

Not only that, but they bring out the best in every other wrestler they face.

For god sake give HBK the title!!

Is it just me, or did the (not the Crippler) Crossface really kill the crowd? If they HAVE to reintroduce it to try and make it a generic hold, could they at least not trap the arm and make it a regular crossface?

At this point, Roid Mysterio should be putting over Miz, not the other way around.

Just when I thought I would make it through the entire show without hearing cock-gobble Cole say 'vintage something or other' he passes the torch of douchebaggery to Lawler who says, and I quote, "now that's vintage HBK".

Damn you Cole for forcing Lawler to rape my ear!!!!

Was DH Smith cleverly disguised as Ted Dibiase?

It's getting harder and harder for me to keep Flair over Michaels as the greatest of all time. Shawn is just amazing. Great match after great match

by the way did RVD resign or was it just a one shot deal?

"Match of the year candidate? So what, if a free TV match lasts 15 minutes or more it's automatically a MotY candidate? Because you couldn't be saying that based on the actual quality."

The early reports I've seen have the match at between 4-4 1/2 stars so I'm actually on the low end in terms of a rating.

Its January 12th, its not like we have a bunch of contenders for MOTY. It has to be the leader in the clubhouse.

I think it's funny that a lot of the Austin clips were of him beating on guys that aren't exactly in the WWE's good graces. Foley, Scott Steiner, Nash, Angle 9multiple times), and Brokc were all shown getting owned by the Rattlesnake. Vintage McMahon.

Raw is just like any other wrestling show: it has its good points and bad, but overall the product seems to be getting more interesting overall.

Yes, they have some odd booking, especially how they are stretching out the whole IC title mess, as well as with the Legacy setup, but they do such a great job of making the main storyline worth watching, as well as the McMahon saga which will be entertaining.

I'm excited about next week, especially when Jericho returns with RV....oh never mind.

Great Main Event the rest of the show was horrendous. The I.c Title sure as heck hasn't been elevated with these stupid finishes. The Vince Mcmahon clips were petty making it look like he fired Angle and Foley from the company on air(when he really he fired them as commish and Smackdown Gm) was rather petty.

is there a 2nd generation big guy legacy could bring in as an enforcer?

Posted By: Guest#9690 (Guest)  on January 12, 2009 at 11:54 PM

This is what TNA will never pull off as long as Russo and JJ are running things.... a main event that lasts at least 30 minutes without some crazy over booking and clocking close to 4.5 stars.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it TNA marks.

I can't wait for McMahon to return to the WWE Universe next week. Umaga will probably join forces with Snuka and Manu to form the next generation Samoan faction in the WWE Universe. I would rather see Randy Savage return to the WWE Universe than RVD return to the WWE Universe.

So I'm an idiot because I didn't like the main event? God forbid people have differing opinions. I mean, it's not like that's what the comments section is for.

I'm not making RVD jokes. I'm not talking about Michael Cole's repetitive commentary (although I do still wonder what exactly a swashbuckling style of wrestling is.)

I don't agree with your opinion. Get used to it. A lot of people in life aren't going to agree with you. That doesn't make them idiots.

I agree. There are racial undertones to the Legacy angle. And even if it's not intentional, it should stop. DiBiase has no rational explanation for siding with his abuser unless he's suffering from battered-white syndrome.

This is what TNA will never pull off as long as Russo and JJ are running things.... a main event that lasts at least 30 minutes without some crazy over booking and clocking close to 4.5 stars.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it TNA marks.

Posted By: actual wrestling (Guest) on January 12, 2009 at 11:57 PM

What a silly ass post. Raw sucked and was saved from one of the worst Raw's in forever by a very good main event. It wasn't 4.5 stars though(more like 4) All the other matchees either got no time or was horrendous. Oh yeah the Legacy isn't gonna get over by beating up two guys nobody cares about.

"Granted that only encompasses like 15 matches or so, but still."

Actually that match showed about 21 minutes of the action ON SCREEN. And was a hell of a main event.

Probably around 4 1/4-4 1/2 stars. Though if Cena needs to make a new years resolution it should be improving that STF hold so it doesn't suck. MY GOD you could see space between Cena's arms and HBK's head when you shouldn't, ugh...

Anyone else notice that the renaming of John Cena's finishers has begun, as discussed by Jim Ross? During the actual show, no one ever referred to the FU as such, instead saying things like "Cena's going for the victory!" and what not. Also, the STFU was just called the STF. I thought it was pretty interesting.

First things first, this whole vintage thing has got to stop, it went to ridiculous levels tonight with even Lawler jumping in a few of his own. It's like they have a new advertising campaign or clothing line coming out and they are trying to push vintage down our throats. There has to be some reason for it. But whatever it is, it is distracting, almost Don West level distraction. Now to the show. Steph looked great out there, not only was she hot, but she had the Mcmahon facial expressions down pat and she was rocking them tonight, great job by both Steph and Jericho, interested to see where this is going. Jericho's acting was perfect as cameras were fading. I was actually hoping that Rey was going to lose to the Miz. I never thought I would actually write something like that. But truth be told, Miz could have used that win. But I knew it wasn't happening when he didn't get the slow mo entrance despite him doing all the motions, why jack the Miz like that, he deserves better. Candice looked like she was 45, barely recognized her. Punk vs Regal was passable, but still nothing like the match they should be putting on. I have high hopes for next week, hope they don't let me down. They being the WWE, because I know Regal and punk could put on a clinic given the proper time. Austin deserves to be in the hall of fame, and a great job on the cult montage! Im sure it was just coincidence that Foley, Angle, Brock etc, were getting their asses handed to them by Stone Cold and then Fired by Vince later on in his montage. I thought, well Scott Armstrong is 2nd generation, maybe they had a ref in their pocket? But then I remembered that 90 percent of the audience couldn't name a single other Armstrong, so no one would care. But I was hoping they would do it. Instead we get a kinda predictable return by Dibiase, who reacts to getting punted in the head and knocked out of action for months with a simple, gee golly gee whiz, the past is the past BS. Lack of creative writing on the part of WWE once again. Kinda disapointing. Randy, we get it, your tattoos look great while giving a 15 minute chinlock. Move on please. I do like the whole Garvin stomp thing though, that wasn't sarcasm either. I needed more Santino, but Beth needed to show some strength, so that worked. Once again though Jillian looked horrible in jeans, she really has noassatall disease and its getting worse. I could have used more Goldust, if your going for humor, use your funny guys, not Dolph Ziggler. Michaels vs Cena, I enjoyed the match, but 4 stars? The match was all rest holds bar the last 5 or so minutes. No 4 star match can ever contain a bearhug, new rule. But I will say this, no one hits a move better than Sweet Chin Music. Michaels can hit that from anywhere.

wouldn't it have been the perfect time to let dustin rhodes bury golddust by being revealed as manu/snuka's backup? cody's own brother!?! depending on how it was written, it had far more potential than dibiase being revealed as the "mystery" 2nd generation backup. yawn.

it'd have worked on 3 levels : getting rid of golddust, keeping dustin on the payroll AND setting up a FAR more personal & interesting storyline w/ the seemingly splintered legacy. i don't see where this is going. and i'm not sure the writers do either.

is kane heel or face? he's been teetering for weeks now, and i think it's starting to confuse the audience ... to the point of apathy. no one really cares.

the low-blow finish for punk / regal was silly. when was the last time we saw that called? the ref was actually in the worst possible spot to make that call. that was poorly planned.

finally, the HBK / JBL thing is missing the mark on a few levels. someone had posted earlier than shawn isn't being forced to act against his will. correct! he's just wrestling. but he "works" for JBL. i don't get it. there aren't enough connected dots for this to make any sense. there are at least 2-3 missing links to this whole program. i hope they get them resolved before delving deeper into self-confusion.

thought the main was good. not great, but really good. better than any we've seen on raw for some time. and, referencing another previous post, it IS funny how we equate "time of match" w/ MOTY candidate. but, admittedly, i was pleased to see them take 2 spot breaks during the main. rare. cena & michaels brought it better than anyone else on the sloppiest RAW in recent memory.

hell, most of it was video packages. i'd have been restless & dissatisfied had i been in attendance in sioux city.

and, really, any of the losers touting TNA over WWE are just doing it for attention on the forum. TNA is simply an inferior product on almost every level. it's a 2009 HD version of "wcw saturday night." poorly run, poorly booked (i.e. dutt / lethal for how many consecutive PPV's, cute kip in MEM, christopher daniels jobbing as curry man, "governor palin," shark boy biting austin, etc ...) and primarily poor action in the ring - it's nothing more than well-rehearsed acrobatics.

nothing about TNA feels quality or A-level ... and everyone, including the 1,200 people in the impact zone, on a universal studio lot, can see that. it's weak. and if you won't accept that .. accept that it's weak-er.

i'm not a WWE mark. i thought tonight's raw was crap. but to draw a line & contrast it to TNA is outright ridiculous. it's like comparing a maserati with a kia & expetcing to be taken seriously.

anyone with 2 eyes can see the difference in quality & presentation.

both need a LOT of work!

I'm honestly surprised to see all the positive reaction for Cena/HBK but to each their own.

For me it was like Edge/Orton from Vengeance '04. I expected something pretty good and it ended up just being resthold-tastic. It wasn't an actively bad match to me but it was just flat out boring like they were just going through the motions.

I'd give it 2 and a half to 3 stars. Although I will say the finish was pretty solid.

"For anyone thinking of rating Shawn Michaels above Flair, Hart, Arn or Tully... get serious."

How are Arn and Tully anywhere near better than Shawn? I like both guys a ton but their primes lasted what, five years, ten tops? Plus they were predominately tag team specialists. Hell, did Arn ever have a great singles match? And Tully had like two. Michaels has dozens.

Hart is my second favorite wrestler of all time (behind Flair) and I rate him as the 3rd greatest I've ever seen behind Flair and Michaels, but Michaels surpassed him in greatness back in like 2005. He just keeps going and going. One great match after another.

The only guy left for him to surpass is Flair and it's getting harder and harder for me to pretend he hasn't already.

Gawd I can't take Legacy seriously. They bore the hell out of me. the main event was very solid. Cena tends to really step up his game with HBK and HBK is always on point. Cena needs to bring that level and then some every time he steps into the ring.

RAW was quite awful imo but the main event was solid!

i'm getting a bit tired and confused with the whole legacy faction right now. there has been so many changes within the group it doesn't make sense anymore. the concept is brilliant, but they have made it a bit too crazy. first it was orton, dibiase and rhodes. then manu joined. then orton concussion-kicks dibiase so now it's orton, rhodes and manu. then snuka joins. then manu is out, so it's orton, rhodes and snuka. then manu come back. then dibiase comes back, and snuka and manu are out. so now it's orton, rhodes and dibiase again. (and i'm sure i missed some steps in between.) why give dibiase a concussion-kick then have him come back on orton's side like nothing ever happened? why turn on manu and snuka? why make it so confusing?

Oh, that's simple - take a wrestler that's seemingly punished for the sole sin of being insanely over before he came to the promotion, put him in a match in his hometown, and that equals said wrestler jobbing yet again.

and even on my small non HD TV Leyla's top was looking see thru.

So......how vain do you have to be to have a video montage of yourself running all the way through for the company you own?

Shows how all the rumors are true: Vince McMahon is mostly in the business of entertaining HIMSELF, often at the expense of his audience.

The "General Manager" cliche is TIRED. They used to be able to run a decent show and angles WIHTOUT IT for YEARS, decades even. It's gotta be taken out to the back and put out of it's misery, with a gun...or with a RVD frogsplash

I guess The WWE wants The Legacy to look like a bunch of waspy sons of goodoleboys.

I think Sim, Manu, and Umaga need to create a faction of Island Brothas that just destroy everybody in diabolical ways. Bring back Rikisihi to br the Godfather/Mouthpiece. Let the beatdowns begin. Book it.

HBK is a camoflage do rag, just stop Shawn, you have no business wearing that.
The beginning of the Stone Cold video package was weird, the slow music made is seem like he died. Cult of Personality was good, but why not just go with the glass shatter and Austins music?
Legacy, too confusing. Maybe Randy really does hear voices in his head cause he can't make up his mind. They have changed members about 10 times, make up your danmed mind. Is Russo booking on the side? If I guy kicked me in the head, I don't think I'd forgive him a month later and be pals with him. And they really need a 4th, DH Smith would be the best as an enforcer role, need to set that up though with him randomly beating people up.
Cena/HBK was good, but I get sick of Super Cena staying in a submission hold for 10 minutes.

Orton will win the Rumble and face Cena at Mania, who will beat JBL at the Rumble. HBK will then get a revenge match against JBL at Mania.

The new Samoans will fued with Orton's second gen bitches.

Jericho will fight Stephanie in a penis slapping match at Mania (winner is the first one to slap their oppenent int he face with their penis). Steph will win because I'm pretty sure she has a longer penis.

Vintage Shawn Michaels. Vintage John Cena. I give up. I just have to accept the fact that Michael Cole will keep saying vintage, no matter how over used that word is or that it's not even the right word to use. I heard JR say "signature" to describe a move used a lot by a certain wrestler. It just sounded a lot better than "vintage". I hope Cole keeps saying vintage and maybe I'll not even notice it when he does say it. I won't let it bother me anymore. Vintage Cole when he says vintage.

Is it just me, or did the (not the Crippler) Crossface really kill the crowd? If they HAVE to reintroduce it to try and make it a generic hold, could they at least not trap the arm and make it a regular crossface?

Posted By: Sigh (Guest) on January 12, 2009 at 11:40 PM

If Shawn hadn't trapped the arm, then Cena would've done a pushup and powered out of the hold. I guess they had Shawn put John in that hold for dramatic effect because later in the match, John had Shawn in the STF. Still, it was a good match. They both looked good.

If I ever meet Shawn Michaels at a show or an autograph signing, I'm going to ask him to hit me with the Sweet Chin Music. I'll ask for a picture with him, then I'll whisper, "Hey, Shawn, after the picture is taken, I'll shake your hand, then I'll turn around and high-five my homie, turn around to talk to you again, and that's when you it me with Sweet Chin Music".

I think that would be awesome to freak out the other fans.

Whats wrong with you people? RAW was finally exciting for once first with the firing..rey rey's match was pretty predictable but after that, the cm punk DQ made sense because how can the refs be perfect every single time? same with kane, it was actually more real, the ref couldnt see obviously. main event was amazing but JBL didnt need to be there, he sucks dick. overall it was pretty unpredictable and entertaining. hopefully CJ didnt really get fired, anybody know?

Did everyone look really sloppy last night? There wasn't a lot of crisply hit moves - certainly not a number of at least decent looking moves in a row. And that includes the HBK/Cena match.

Thoughts coming out of the show...

1. We are going to have to get used to guys like Miz and Morrison losing singles matches as most of the enhancement talent has been let go.

2. So is Mr. McMahon coming back as a face or as a heel. I'll bet the crowd reaction will be mixed and somewhat muted when he does return - so expect to hear plenty of piped in cheers.

3. Hey Chris - thanks for filling in admirably while Orton and Cena were injured. But they're back now - and the ratings really didn't change much while you were at the top - so we'll see you on the upper mid-card.

4. Stephanie has gotten worse each week. Small doses are fine - but she is nowhere ready to be a regular on TV.

The Hart Foundation had an evil referee as their babyface-punching-bag in Danny Davis...

...the Legacy now has segond-gen ref Scott Armstrong (Son of Bob; brother of Brad, Steve, and Road Dog).

I still love RAW. I think it's pretty fresh overall. One thing I have to say is not up to par though, is the announcing. King and Cole are not a strong team. King sounds so forced these days, and Cole needs a more motivated color guy to help him make sense. Still love JR & Tazz, but I gotta say ECW has the best commentary right now.

It's pretty sad that Scott Armstrong will probably be the only one in the Legacy with a personality. The rest of them are generic.
