411's ECW on Sci-Fi Report 1.13.09
Posted by Michael Bauer on 01.13.2009

Welcome to the ECW on Sci-Fi! As always, I am Michael Bauer, your 411 ECW Re-capper.

411 Wrestling is hiring an Alternate ECW Recapper! Unlike my recaps, this is not meant to be a strict play by play. Past examples of what we are looking for can be seen if you look at The Palace of Wisdom that Wilcox did for a few weeks. You can always check The Dope on Smackdown or any other recap that isn't done live for other examples of what has been done in the past. Please send all samples to larrytcsonka@yahoo.com. It may seem like a small piece of 411mania, but all staff members get to participate in Roundtables all over the 411mania site, vote in the Wrestler of the Week, and get invited to join in on some of the most read articles on 411mania. Plus it is a ton of fun!

Now to the ECW Recap…

We open with a video package to hype up Jack Swagger vs. Matt Hardy for our main event tonight.

Todd Grisham and Matt Striker at ringside and guess who is dancing inside the ring…

DJ Gabriel and Alicia Fox vs. Paul and Katie Lea Burchill

The bell rings and it will be the women starting this mixed tag match. Katie Lea whips Alicia into the turnbuckle, but Alicia flips over and gets drilled with a back kick. Alicia gets a rollup after being thrown off the ropes. The ladies hit heads and the men get tagged in. Paul Burchill backs up Gabriel in the corner and uses the knee braces to his advantage. Gabriel gets choked on the second rope and Burchill hits a high knee to the face for a two count. Burchill with a neck vice as Alicia bounces up and down. Gabriel gets up, reverses a whip and slides under Burchill, and then hits a back suplex for two. Katie Lea breaks up the pinfall and both ladies tumble to the outside. DJ Gabriel goes up to the second rope and hits the Diving European Uppercut after the distraction for the three count at 3:00.

Winners: DJ Gabriel and Alicia Fox

Match Rating: ½* Ugh. That was nothing even close to special.

We get the video package from last night that announced Stone Cold Steve Austin as a member of the 2009 Hall of Fame. Very well done.

Back from the break and Tommy Dreamer comes out in a suit, which looks odd enough as it is. He has the microphone and says that he something to say despite the buzz about tonight's title match. Tommy says that it hard for him to express his emotions about entertaining the fans for the past 19 years in the ring. He refers himself to the heart and soul of ECW, because those three letters mean everything to him. He says he wouldn't change a thing as the "ECW" chants start. Tommy says he has reflected from inside and he says he is not the same man he used to be and the competition is ahead of him now. He says he doesn't have what it takes anymore, but he contract expires in five months. He wants to prove to himself and to everyone that he can still compete here and he can only do that by becoming ECW Champion one more time before he contract runs out. He starts crying as he says that if he can't, he will leave ECW. It is the only way he says he can look at himself in the mirror with pride and respect. He puts the microphone down and walks out.

We go to a video package for Jack Swagger and his rise up the ranks over the past few months. We then head to commercial.

Backstage, Ricky Ortiz is with Tiffany and they are about to kiss as Hornswoggle runs in to break up the moment with a symbol.

The Boogeyman vs. Sammy Savard

And cue Matt Striker's barf bag. While we are at it, how about a barf bag or a body bog for Sammy. The bell rings and Sammy starts punching away, but it has little effect. Boogeyman with a punch of his own and a hip toss. Boogeyman hits a headbutt and whips Sammy into the turnbuckle and hits the huge splash. Boogeyman lifts up Savard and hits the pumphandle slam and gets the three count at 1:00. Striker says, "And now for something completely different. Now comes the good part." HA!

Winner: The Boogeyman

Match Rating: DUD. A typical Boogeyman squash match.

It's the Smackdown Rebound with Jeff Hardy and his girlfriend being involved in a "Hit and Run accident" that had some of the worst acting ever.

We then go to Matt Hardy and Matt says that the accident to Jeff will not effect him tonight. Matt says that Jack Swagger has definitely earned his title shot, but he still hasn't beaten him and he not the ECW Champion. That match is up next after the commercial.

We are back and we have a Mr. McMahon video package to hype up his return to Raw on Monday Night next week.

ECW Title – Matt Hardy vs. Jack Swagger

We get the super special ring announcing for this matchup. Matt Hardy gets the normal huge ovation from the crowd. After the announcement of each man, the bell rings. They lockup and Matt Hardy gets a headlock, but it is reversed and some chin wrestling is broken up by the ropes. Lockup again and Swagger gets a hammerlock. Hardy turns into a suplex as we go to commercial after 1:00.

Back at 4:50 and Swagger has Hardy in a headlock, but Hardy escapes and whips Swagger off the ropes, hitting a hip toss. Hardy hits a bulldog and gets a two count. Headlock by Hardy, but Swagger whips Hardy into the ropes. Matt grabs on to the ropes. Matt hits a boot and goes to the ring apron. Matt hits a shoulder block and tries to leap back in, but gets drilled. Swagger goes outside and whips Hardy into the ring post. Swagger brings Hardy into the ring and focuses on the left shoulder. Hardy gets rammed into the turnbuckle, but fights out with a kick. Swagger catches him on the second try and drills Hardy's head right into the mat for a two count. Hardy gets dropped on his head again after he starts to escape a submission hold. Hardy starts fighting back , but Swagger blocks and hits a boot to the face for two. We go to another commercial at 8:30.

We return at 13:00 and Swagger has Matt Hardy locked in a reverse headlock, but Matt Hardy fights out and catches Jack ducking too early after a whip for a boot to the face. Matt heads up top, but Swagger catches him and hits a superplex. Jack crawls over and gets a two count. Swagger goes back to an arm wrench hammerlock, but Matt gets to the corner and Swagger kicks away. Matt put on the turnbuckle and Matt fights out of the superplex. Matt ducks down and hits a powerbomb, but Swagger kicks out at two! Matt tries for the Twist of Fate, but Swagger slips out and hits a belly to belly suplex for two. Striker notices the turnbuckle pad got ripped off during the powerbomb. Swagger tries for the gutwrench powerbomb, but Matt slips out and hits a side Russian Legsweep for two. Swagger shoves off the bulldog, but Matt Hardy hits the Side Effect for two. Swagger goes back to the left arm and sets Matt up by the turnbuckle. Swagger hits a splash after bouncing off the second turnbuckle for two. Matt fights off Swagger and goes to the top rope, but Swagger catches Matt again. Matt is up in the electric chair and Swagger throws him face first into that exposed turnbuckle. Matt looks out and Swagger hits the gutwrench powerbomb and gets the cover for the three count at 18:35!

Winner and NEW ECW CHAMPION: Jack Swagger

Match Rating: *** This was a really good match and Swagger proved that he belonged in that match against someone like Hardy.

This show was just mehhhh. I prefer TNA Impact. ECW's best bet is to start a fued with R-Truth and Lo-Ki.

Matt Hardy = Transition champ....Save your money Matt.
Not to be Mr. Negative, but has Tommy had credibility in the last 10 yrs?
I hope they have plans for Birchill. He seems to be just floating around without any direction. He better save his money too!

The title match better mean that Matt is going onto better things (i.e. a feud with Edge, Christian or his brother). Say what you want but Swagger is decent at best. As I said, when a guy can't even hit his finisher clean there's an issue. He almost botched it on Ortiz and nearly Ganso-bombed Hardy (who's barely above cruiserweight). Vince and his man crush on big guys is past the point of ridiculous. He pushes guys like this while guys like Cabana and TJ Wilson are stuck in developmental and Elijah Burke gets released. Btw, TNA just signed Ludwig Borga to a one shot deal (and yes that was meant as a F-U to all the RVD idiots who are going to post)

just 3 stars? that was 4 stars!

Matt Hardy vs. Jack Swagger from ECW was at least one full star rating better than John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels from RAW.

Just a general comment:
I hate how WWE increasingly gives rookies belts just to try to get them over. Some are deserving, like Swagger, but many are not.
Gail Kim and Carlito won belts in their debut matches...kinda lame, and unfair for the longer term guys who have earned a spot.

Posted By: FUZEY (Guest)  on January 13, 2009 at 11:03 PM

Good review, but I disagree with Swagger proving himself. Not only is he still young to the league, which I understand shouldn't be a detriment to him if he is great, but he isn't. The crowd never liked hinm when he debuted, and never hated him when he turned; the feud with Dreamer didn't even get him universal heat, more like lukewarm boos. Evan was able to get over the crowd tremendously, he was able to go unto Raw and Smackdown to wrestle on the bigger shows. I can understand if they are trying to get a younger guy in the mix, ala John Morrison, but Swagger doesn't have the mic or ring skills of Morrison, not does he have the crowd control. The crowd loves to hate Morrison, they don't seem to care too much about Swagger.

As a long time Dreamer mark...I hope this finally gets him the ECW Title...or at least allows him a dignified goodbye instead of being "Future endevored".

I'm sorry I just don't agree with Swagger winning a belt this soon in his career. Ever since Vince destroyed professional wrestling he hasn't had a clue what to do, and one of the major mistakes he's made is putting belts on rookies. Santino, Kofi, Lashley, the list goes on and on. Shit performers wearing title belts. It makes the whole business look stupid. He's totally fucked up C.M. Punk's career and made him look like an asshole. This swagger just looks like a poor man's Brock Lesnar. Oh, who cares I don't even watch this shit.

Its set!

RVD returns at the rumble and goes to wrestlemania to defeat all 3 world champions and even the TNA champion!

RVD then after winning the belts take over the WWE after buying out Vince.

Matt Hardy = Transition champ

Posted By: FUZEY (Guest) on January 13, 2009 at 10:18 PM

I love it when people throw around the term "transitional champion." Most people - like YOU - clearly don't know what it means.

Matt held the belt for over 4 months and it's not like they were just trying to get the belt from Henry to SWAGGA. So no, he's wasn't a transitional champion. Please learn what terminology means before you use it next time so you won't look so stupid.

Posted By: Ron Mexico (Guest)  on January 14, 2009 at 12:45 AM

Hey Ron Mexico, instead of taking potshots and calling YOU stupid, I will just answer you.
I know what a transition champ is and 4 months is up for debate- I'll give you that. BUT if Hardy was doing anything worthwhile since getting that belt, he'd be holding it longer than a cup of coffee. Unless he goes on to bigger things, this will be looked at as a pretty lame reign overall.

"Nobody on the corner has Swagger like us."

Quote, female artist M.I.A.

The first thing that ran through my mind, as Jack Swagger won the ECW title.

Wow.

The career journey to the ECW Championship...

Matt Hardy: ten years.

Jack Swagger: six months.

Vince really fucking hates us all, doesn't he...?

Posted By: BJC (Guest)  on January 14, 2009 at 01:39 AM

Well, it seems they aren't burying Paul Burchill and Katie Lea out as they actually gave them an entrance as opposed to DJ Gabriel and Alicia Fox(who is smokin' god damn hot), but it still wasn't a good match. However, that awesome Stone Cold promo still gets me pumped even after seeing it on Raw so, even though Boogeyman's worthless ass had to be on here, it was still a good show. I still swear though that they dub in the crowd noise on the broadcast.

To me, Jack Swagger is like the male version of Michelle McCool. Enuff said.

I guess he's blowing Undertaker too.

"The career journey to the ECW Championship...

I don't think Matt Hardy was in the the original ECW, and he has only been in the new ECW since June 2008.

Oh, I wasn't taking a potshot. I was explaining the terminology so you wouldn't look stupid.

Lame title reign? Yes. I'd agree with that. Since winning the title all Matt has done is beat Mark Henry a lot and lose to Kozlov while fighting his brother's battles.

But in this day and age 4 months isn't up for debate. That's a pretty typical world title reign. He didn't do a lot during his reign but he was definitely the face of ECW. He wasn't just keeping the title warm. That's transitional.

I'm glad that you understand now.

Posted By: Ron Mexico (Guest)  on January 14, 2009 at 02:25 AM

i fucks with swagger. i liked him since he debuted and i'm happy to see him win the title. I must say i kinda saw it coming, cause i think they're setting up for a matt/jeff feud if christian doesnt come into the scenario. I will agree that swagger's gutwrench looked a little weak tonight though

Posted By: dont be a hater (Guest)  on January 14, 2009 at 03:07 AM

Congrats to Swagger for ending a title run that felt to me like Hulk's 4 year one just without the relevance. I hope they don't do something dumb now and job him to Dreamer so that the guy can have a title after he's lost to everybody in the WWE at least twice.

Posted By: black (Guest)  on January 14, 2009 at 03:15 AM

i think its pretty harsh saying that matt hardy did nothing with his title reign. he hardly set the world alight but he did become the recognisable face of ecw for six months +, defended the belt against mark henry several times as well as his great match against finlay, and defeated almost anyone put in front of him (apart from the kozlov train). i mean i would have prefered a proper swagger/hardy feud, but with the upcoming jeff hardy/edge/christian(?) dramatics they needed to bring matts focus to smackdown as opposed to ecw. makes sense, even if some people hate it.

I also think that Swagger isn't ready to be ECW champion yet. I just don't bye him beating Matt at this point. All I know is that the Cena haters have NOTHING to complain about. The only reason certain people are cheering this on is because Swagger is a heel.

now wwe BURIES mvp because they feel like they don't want to give a young star an early push because they don't want them to leave, then they give the ecw belt to jack swagger....hmmm.......I would've rather seen matt retain but Sawgger isn't half bad so i'm interested to see how he does as the champ.

Swagger will be training for MMA within the next year. Too much too soon = big head, better than the business.

Not liking Swagger as champ, he's not all that great in the ring, and he can't cut a promo at all. He needed some time to develope....

I don't think Matt Hardy was in the the original ECW, and he has only been in the new ECW since June 2008.
_____________

Not what I meant.

Matt Hardy's been a professional wrestler for about 10 years. It took him this long to reach the high point in his career thus far: ECW Champion.

Swagger's been a professional wrestler for six months (maybe less, I don't remember). It took him that long to reach the same level.

Get it?

awww Matt lost his title :( i respect Swagger and his Gutwrench Powerbomb is brutal but Matt has a lot of skill and is experienced. i hope there will be a whole Jeff+Matt vs Edge and Christian fued later in the year

Let's hope they move over some challengers for MR.Swagga! like Jericho, R-Truth, Low Ki, Rey Rey....Let's get Jack's career really going.

Swagger deserves a lot of credit for having a match that good this early in his career. Granted, he had a great guy to work with, but that was even a good match by Matt's standards.

For as long as Boogeyman has been around, why do they still need to build him with squash matches?
