411's ECW on Sci-Fi Report 1.27.09
Posted by Michael Bauer on 01.27.2009
Jack Swagger gets a new challenger for the ECW Title and he looks to have a little luck on his side.
Welcome to the ECW on Sci-Fi! As always, I am Michael Bauer, your 411 ECW Re-capper.
411 Wrestling is hiring an Alternate ECW Recapper! Unlike my recaps, this is not meant to be a strict play by play. Past examples of what we are looking for can be seen if you look at The Palace of Wisdom that Wilcox did for a few weeks. You can always check The Dope on Smackdown or any other recap that isn't done live for other examples of what has been done in the past. Please send all samples to larrytcsonka@yahoo.com. It may seem like a small piece of 411mania, but all staff members get to participate in Roundtables all over the 411mania site, vote in the Wrestler of the Week, and get invited to join in on some of the most read articles on 411mania. Plus it is a ton of fun!
Now to the ECW Recap…
We open straight to the opening video, which seems to already be missing Matt Hardy, but I might have just missed it. Teddy Long comes out as Todd Grisham and Matt Striker welcome us to ECW. He grabs the microphone and says that it was a very interesting Royal Rumble, especially involving one member of the ECW roster. We get a video package from the whole event, and it ends with Matt Hardy turning on Jeff and helping Edge win the WWE Heavyweight Title. Teddy says that as a result, Matt has asked for his release from ECW and to be a part of Smackdown. Teddy granted him the release and wishes him luck. Jack Swagger then interrupts Teddy hyping the show and comes out with the ECW Title. Jack has a microphone of his own and waits from the boos to die down. He says that he has a great show because Jack Swagger plans to have a championship celebration for the new face of ECW. He drops the microphone and poses with the belt. But it gets interrupted by the music of The Boogeyman, who comes out from under the ring. Jack Swagger simply bolts as The Boogeyman apparently is in action when we come back.
The Boogeyman vs. Rick Ortiz
When come back with The Boogeyman eating worms. Lovely. Ortiz comes out with his rally towel and a microphone. Ortiz tells Boogeyman that he doesn't need to eat worms to get over, he just needs a rally towel. Boogeyman gets decked and clotheslined over the top rope. But the bell never rang and Ortiz just walks to the back. Boogeyman's music kicks in and that's it.
Winner: No contest
Match Rating: N/A I'm not sure what that was.
Backstage, Jack Swagger gets to Teddy Long's office and says that the ECW Title was stolen from him. Teddy won't be anything about it, but he says that maybe Tiffany can help him. Swagger sarcastically thanks Teddy and walks out.
Paul Burchill (with Katie Lea) vs. Finlay (with Hornswoggle)
Back from a break and Paul Burchill is already in the ring. Hornswoggle was already under the ring. The bell rings and they lockup. Finlay gets a headlocked and whipped off the ropes, but he lands a shoulder block. Finlay with an arm wrench and a takedown, followed by a series of European Uppercuts, following up with sharp elbows. Finlay whips Burchill, but he grabs the ropes and kicks Finlay in the face, before hitting a clothesline. Burchill backs Finlay into a corner and throws him out before locking in a headlock. Finlay gets to his feet and fights out, but he runs right into a clothesline. Burchill goes to neck wrench, grabbing the left arm for leverage. Finlay escapes again, but gets whipped chest first into the turnbuckle. Burchill hits the double knee into the corner as Hornswoggle starts chasing Katie Lea. Paul goes out after the midget, but Finlay hits a baseball slide. Finlay slams Burchill into the announcer's table and rolls him into the ring. Finlay hits a series of clotheslines and connects with the rolling fireman's carry for a two count. Finlay lifts up Burchill and connects with a back body drop. Finlay stalks Burchill and connects with the Celtic Cross for the three count at 4:35.
Winner: Finlay
Match Rating: *1/2 It was okay, but it could have done without the Hornswoggle nonsense and about four more minutes.
Backstage, Tiffany is glad that Ricky Ortiz didn't get wormed. Swagger comes in and takes Tiffany away to help him find his title.
We come back from the break to go right into a promo for the new John Cena movie, 12 Rounds. Seems to looks pretty good.
We see Mark Henry and Tony Atlas waking and they run into Jack Swagger and Tiffany. Jack asks Mark it he has seen the belt. Mark says that if he took the belt, Jack would do nothing about it. They walk off, leaving Jack speechless and without his smile.
Back from the break and we get the Raw Rebound of the continuing Randy Orton vs. the McMahons saga.
Mark Henry vs. Tommy Dreamer
The bell rings and they lockup. Mark Henry just shoves him off and Dreamer comes back swinging. Henry whips Dreamer in the corner, Dreamer dodges a charges, but tries to roll up the big man. Henry just lands on Dreamer and it looks like Dreamer dislocated his arm. Henry just grabs Dreamer's arm and wrenches it from the wrist. Dreamer tries to fight back, but he just downed with one shot. Dreamer is grounded as Henry goes back to twisting the arm from the wrist. Henry starts kicks the back of Dreamer, but Tommy fights up and punches away. Henry quickly whips Dreamer down by the arm and gets a two count. Henry locks him the hammerlock and puts his weight down on the arm as well. Dreamer fights back up and hits a jawbreaker, but can't take advantage. Dreamer gets decked with right hands and dropped with a huge bodyslam. Dreamer avoids and elbow drop and crawls to the corner. Mark walks right into a huge boot and Dreamer hits a second rope clothesline for a two count. Dreamer hits a series of basement dropkicks to the knee and gets Henry down in the corner, before hitting one more to the chest. Dreamer dives off the second ropes and gets caught by Henry this time. Henry slams Dreamer down with the World's Strongest Slam for the three count at 5:35.
Winner: Mark Henry
Match Rating: **1/4 That was a fine little match, but damn did Dreamer look like he screwed up his arm. I wish they got more time here, because I liked where it was going.
Backstage, Teddy can't believe that Jack and Tiffany looked everywhere and can't find the title. Teddy tells Jack to come to the ring with him and they are going to get his title back.
We are back and Jack Swagger is in the ring and pissed. Teddy Long calls himself a third grade teacher and demands that whoever took the title better bring it back out now and will face no disciplinary action. Swagger says he is the face of franchise and he wants his title back right now. This brings out Finlay to the ring, who has a microphone but not the title belt. Finlay says he thinks that he knows who has the title belt. He looks under the ring and Hornswoggle comes out with the ECW Title. Finlay tells his son that he has to give the title back and they walk into the ring. Swagger steps up and Finlay apologies for his son and Swagger says that he knows Finlay put him up to this. Finlay says that he wanted the belt, he would just take it from him. Swagger says that the only thing worse than his chances at winning the ECW Title is his ability as a father. Finlay tries to keep nice, but is getting ticked. Finlay makes Hornswoggle give the belt back and Swagger takes a shot at Hornswoggle. Finlay decks Swagger with a few right hands and then with the ECW Title. Swagger is out cold as Finlay leaves the ring with his son.
Matt was still in the opening video. Just to let you know you kinda did miss it.

Very boring show tonight.

Shouldn't RVD be next in line for the title challenge?

I'm not sure how to feel about the first ECW show after the Rumble. I was hoping that could have done something with Hardy to, at least, have something to carry over on Smackdown.

Teddy Long is a fucking idiot. Arguably his biggest star wants to change shows and rather than make a TRADE for someone he just lets the guy go with no problem. WTF is that?
Dumbass...

Wow, Bauer, I'm kind of amazed you were able to squeeze this much text out of tonight's non-show. I really do enjoy ECW most weeks, but tonight's show was just bad.
It was more like the Extreme Wrestling Themed Commercial Hour.
So much filler. Here's hoping they get their act together next week.

Bloody awful show. In the opening segment when Boogeyman ran off Swagger I was afraid that he'd be Swagger's next feud. Thankfully he isn't(at least not for now) That was the only good part of the show.

The ECW roster is now down to what, five guys?
Posted By: Michael (Guest) on January 28, 2009 at 01:27 AM
Swagger vs Finley should be gold...but come on what a dead show!
Why bury Burchill...he is clearly the 3rd best wrestler they have now ahead of Dreamer, Henry, Boogieman, Ortiz, Gabriel. and Katie Lee is HOTTTTTT!

It is not like Matt or any other wrestler does not bounce around to other shows, Miz and Morrison. The WWe Draft is a joke and everyone knows it. Just because you get drafted to a show is not set in stone. Most of the draft is to try and build ratings and mark out for who should go where and what title switches to what show. It will ALWAYS have the IC title on raw and the US title on SD, why because you might as well call SD a pseudo WCW. WWE is like I been saying ever since last years RR(2008) a waste of tv time and empty ratings. The product has literally gone down the shitter with lack of a solid storyline ever since the edge and matt hardy battle over lita. Since then, there has been one or two title changes between edge, john cena, batista, orton, and hhh. Other than those five berrying all others has the competition is stale and there is no one NEW stepping up that has more potential. Swagger-nah, hes a one title reign at least, Mark Henry is so NOT over anymore, UT old, Kane boring, CM Punk was berried and he got the title taken from him in a second.

You seeeee?!
Good boy Ricky Ortiz decided to take mah advice, "Don't Forget To Bring a Towel!" and now look how successful he is gonna be!
You should aaaaall love him for it!
When Towelie says to bring a towel, you gosh-darn better briiiiiing a towel!
So...
... You wanna get high?

An employee who flat out tells you he no longer wants to work for you should be allowed to leave. Replace him with people who actually want to be there.

Wow, that seemed like a pile of very little. Finlay is the logical challenger to continue Swagger's development - you can guarantee that the match will be stiff, and good. Swagger-Bourne at Mania?

Damn, I was getting excited, thinking Boogeyman was challenging for the title. I guess I should've known better than to think something cool was happening.

That's right on point! ECW needs to go back to being the show that features nothing but wrestling. The Boogeyman crap needs to go, that was time that could've been given to guys like DJ Gabriel.
Other than that the only redeeming part of the program is Dreamer's final push.
Posted By: Orlando (Guest) on January 28, 2009 at 10:52 AM
I agree that Teddy Long should have made a trade with Smackdown for Matt Hardy. Without Matt, the line-up is pretty thin. ECW couldn't even hold elimination matches for a chamber match like the other two brands.
And please get rid of The Boogeyman. he serves no purpose except to take up time that more deserving wrestlers should get.
Posted By: mogamer (Guest) on January 28, 2009 at 03:37 PM
I still think the Hebners had something to do with the ECW belt being missing

ACTUALLY, it was Ricky Ortiz who was jumped and clotheslined over the top to the floor, not The Boogeyman. I personally believe this will lead to an eventual Ortiz heel turn. This face with a rally towel gimmick was destined to be lame (perhaps intentionally) although I think Ricky has potential as a competitor.
I've got to question Dreamer going down to Henry though. How on Earth is it supposed to raise the believability factor in terms of Dreamer capturing the ECW title before his contract expires in June if he's already being jobbed out following his announcement? It's still only fucking January! Shouldn't they be focusing on Dreamer working his way up the ladder, chasing the ECW Championship harder than he ever has, and more importantly, booking him for televised WINS? It would have made more sense to have Henry go over Ortiz or maybe DJ Gabriel, and Dreamer go over Burchill, with Finlay still getting in his stuff with Swagger. Would start Dreamer's momentum off in this angle on the right track.
Strange booking to say the least.

Can't believe they let the "clean and jerk" discussion go uncensored in the Henry-Dreamer match.
"Henry holds the clean and jerk record"
"Is that you when you take a shower?"
"Only if you're there."
Wow. Just wow.
I think they're just treading water with Dreamer for now. He'll get a program with Swagger eventually, and Swagger will get another solid veteran to bring him along.

Gotta love Matt Stryker for not only throwing out a Nation of Domination reference, but a nod to tommy Dreamer's old entrance song "Man in the Box" as well. I think he works well as a commentator because he's obviously a fan and knows his history.
