411's TNA Impact Report 01.29.08
Posted by Randy Harrison on 01.29.2009
It's a handicapperiffic night of Impact as the Main Event Mafia takes over and books a ton of handicap matches. What will happen when Booker T takes on TNA referees and Team 3-D takes on Sting? Where will Kurt Angle fit into the equation and will the TNA Frontline have an answer? Your answer is one click away in 411's TNA Impact report!!
We start the show with a message brought to us by the Main Event Mafia, showing their highlights while proclaiming themselves as goodwill ambassadors and heroes fighting against a threat (The Frontline) that is trying to destroy all that they've worked for and the integrity of business. From there, we see Kurt Angle in what used to be Jeff Jarrett's office and he's got a headset with him as Jim Cornette comes in and pitches a fit saying that the Mafia can't just take over the show. Angle says that he said last week that they'd take over Impact and that they're going to. Cornette says that it's their funeral and if they want to do it, go ahead. Angle gets on the headset and runs through everyone and makes sure that they're in place for the opening of the show.
We are LIVE-ish from the Impact Zone with Chet Lemon and Black Snow....er....Kevin Nash and Booker T on commentary. Booker gets scared by the pyro to open the show and they run down the show with a handicap match between the Kongtourage and ODB as well as a match between Matt Morgan and Petey Williams where Petey will have one hand tied behind his back. Another handicap match will be on the card as Booker T will take on Rudy Charles and Andrew Thomas, the TNA officials. The main event is yet ANOTHER handicap match as Team 3-D will take on Sting. Booker throws it back to Sharmell and she's got ODB with her. Sharmell calls her Obnoxious Dumb Bimbo and ODB says that if she didn't have a huge security guard protecting her she'd be on her like flies on a turd. She says that she's all jacked up, drunk and horny and she wants to kick some Kongtourage ass. Sharmell informs her that the MEM have thrown Taylor Wilde and Roxxi out of the building, but ODB doesn't seem concerned because she's got her tag team partners, Jack and Jim. Sharmell throws it to Scott Steiner, who ends up defeated by the English language yet again as he's handling the ring introductions this week.
Match One: TNA Knockouts Handicap Match
The Kongtourage (Sojournor Bolt, Rahka Kahn, Raisha Saeed and Awesome Kong) vs. ODB
Steiner gets a laugh from me by suggesting that ODB is coming to a truck stop near you through her ring introduction.
Random Impact Observation #1: Why bother having Nash and Booker out there doing their schtick on commentary if the sound is so shitty that you can't even hear anything. TNA's sound has been terrible for weeks and they really need to get on that because it makes them seem totally bush-league.
ODB takes Bolt down with a waistlock and forearms Bolt across the back, but Bolt fires back with a shoulderblock into the corner. Bolt tries an Irish whip, but ODB hits an inside cradle off of it for a two-count. ODB hits a clothesline and pushes Bolt out through the ropes to the floor as Kahn comes charging right into a titty-slap. ODB ducks away from a botched side kick and titty-slaps Kahn again before ramming her into the turnbuckle. Kahn turns it around with a chop of her own and tries to charge ODB, but ODB gets out of the way and drops Kahn to the floor. Saeed comes in and hammers away at ODB before whipping her into the corner, following in with a reverse elbow. Saeed with another Irish whip but she misses the charge and ODB hits a pair of forearms before bouncing off the ropes witha clothesline. Saeed gets clotheslines over the top rope and now it's down to Kong and ODB. Kong swings and misses and OBD takes her into the corner with some punches before heading up to mount Kong for some punches. All three of the rest of the Kongtourage come up behind her, but ODB hits a splash onto all three of them off of the second rope. She drops all three of them with clotheslines, but Kong attacks and it's a four-on-one beatdown now. Kong picks ODB up and it's IMPLANT BUSTER TIME!! There's the pinfall and there's the three-count!!
Winners: The Kongtourage (pinfall, Kong Implant Buster on ODB) *1/2
(Eh. They tried their best, but it wasn't that great. I still think that they need to do something with their sound because it seemed like Booker and Nash were getting in some funny stuff, but you couldn't hear it. As for the match, it was essentially ODB looking strong before ultimately being made to look weak by eating the pin. I get that she was able to run through everyone else in the Kongtourage, but couldn't she have at least hit a bit more offense on Kong before getting wasted? I hope things get better for the rest of the show.)
Kurt Angle's in the back losing his shit, talking about how great the show is, with Cornette freaking out about whether he's going to pay the litigation and the medical bills after the night is over. JB tells Cornette that he'll handle it and asks Angle to reconsider before someone gets seriously hurt and that they need to get the show back to how it was before. Angle tells him to screw himself and that the point of this is that people are supposed to get hurt. He says that he's evened it up by putting Sting into a handicap match with Team 3-D before JB tells him that Mick Foley is on his way back and he apparently has back-up with him. Angle laughs and then freaks out on JB, saying that he thinks that he's just being nice to him to get close to Karen. JB swears that it's bros before hos and that he has "strong feelings" for Kurt, but Kurt tells him to take some MEM t-shirts and sell them out in the crowd. Cornette gets in a great line to JB on his way out, saying that he really handled that well before Angle tells Cornette to shut up.
We're back from the break and Booker throws it back to Sharmell, who is with Andrew Thomas and TNA Senior Official Rudy Charles. She asks them what they're going to do with their careers after Booker cripples them tonight. Thomas looks like he's going to have a stroke and says that he has a family to think about. Rudy Charles has some spunk to him though, calling Sharmell "Mrs. T" before talking about his amateur wrestling background and how he's going to come out fighting. Thomas asks him if he's high and says that they have to go out to face Booker T!! Charles tells him to follow his lead and that everything will be fine.
Match Two: Handicap Match
Rudy Charles and Andrew Thomas vs. Booker T
Booker and Nash mock Charles' amateur wrestling experience and laugh at the two of them as Thomas tries to high tail it back up the ramp to safety. Nash sounds like he's going to be disappointed if Booker doesn't beat them to death. Booker hits the ramp and his eyes bug out like he's getting ready to fail a TNA drug test as Nash is surprised to see Booker for the first time tonight. Scott Steiner joins Kevin Nash on commentary as we see JB in the crowd hocking the MEM t-shirts. The bell rings with Charles trying to get a handshake from Booker, but Booker lays the smack-talk on him. CLOTHESLINE TO CHARLES!! He sells it like he's been shot and Booker picks him up for a paintbrush to the face. Booker picks him up again and hits the spinning back kick to the face as Nash calls it a "mixed martial arts" approach to wrestling. Booker kicks Charles in the gut and hits a HUGE AXE KICK to the back of the head!! Thomas looks like he's going to shit himself on the apron and Booker drags Charles over and forces the tag to Thomas. He puts his dukes up like a 30's-style boxer, but Booker just kicks him in the gut and WAFFLES him with a short-arm clothesline. Booker pushes Thomas into the corner and LIGHTS HIM UP with some chops to the chest before hitting a big kick to the face. Nash plugs the TNA Mobile service saying that they have exclusive news on who is the next member of the MEM, promising that you'll also get a naked shot of Kevin Nash. In the ring, Booker nearly kills Thomas with a MASSIVE Bookend and gets the long three-count before forcing Earl Hebner to raise his hand.
Winner: Booker T (pinfall, Bookend) 1/2*
(This was god-awful. I mean it was funny because of the commentary and seeing the referees sell like they were dead, but it was horrible as a match. This show is dying a slow death so far. It's sad to watch all of the hard work that TNA has put into their good shows recently going right down the crapper)
After the match, Booker T lays his hands on Earl Hebner and HERE COMES SHANE SEWELL!! He takes over with some right hands on Booker, but Booker turns it right around and kicks Sewell in the gut. He comes off the ropes and scores with another big axe kick and Sewell is finished. After a video package, we see Angle in the office, talking to Kevin Nash about a hot chick and if Nash might be able to get her to show her boobs. Sting comes in and asks him what the hell he's doing before asking Angle to consider that when they're in the ring at Against All Odds, he could have Sting as a friend, or Sting as a foe, so he'd better get his act together.
Sharmell's in the back with Matt Morgan after the commercial and she asks him about how he's going to be able to defeat Petey Williams with one of his arms tied behind his back. Morgan says that it's been a crazy year for him as he was named as the biggest Gladiator in American Gladiators history and that he's had his DNA shot into space, but that this challenge tonight is the biggest of his career. He jokes around and then says that he doesn't care if Petey has his arms tied behind his back because he has no sympathy for anyone. He also tells Abyss to keep a close eye tonight because it's just a little taste of what he's going to get at Against All Odds.
Match Three:
Petey Williams vs. Matt Morgan
Steiner takes a moment away from his ring announcing duties to try to conduct some foreign policy business by telling Barack Obama that he needs to stop building the wall to keep the Mexicans out to build one to keep the asshole Canadians out. You stay classy, Scotty. Morgan drops to his knees and asks Williams to hit him and he hits him with a short dropkick and some right hands in the corner, but Morgan just shoves him off. Morgan tries to hit a boot to the face, but Williams ducks under and Morgan crotches himself on the top rope. He shoves Williams off again and to the floor, but Williams goads him out to the floor before catching him with coming back into the ring with right hands. Morgan catches him in the goozle, but Williams gets free by stomping on Morgan's feet. Morgan LEVELS Williams with a clothesline and shoves him into the corner for the rapid-fire back elbows before taking a bow. Morgan hits a huge avalanche and drops Williams with a side slam that gets a two-count. Steiner gets up on the apron and tells Morgan to keep up the pounding and Morgan happily obliges by hitting a big fallaway slam. Morgan gets another two-count, but picks him up before the three. Morgan heads over to talk to Steiner and as he does so, referee Slick Johnson unties Williams' arm. Williams fires off some right hands and flying forearms before he hits his over the top rope jawbreaker. Williams is up top and he scores with a beautiful missle dropkick before dropping Steiner off the apron. Williams heads back into the ring and turns around right into the CARBON FOOTPRINT!! 1..2...3!!!
Winner: Matt Morgan (pinfall, Carbon Footprint) *1/2
(Everything is starting to feel pretty repetitive. I dug the little piece of business with Johnson untying Williams' arm and him getting some offense in, as well as his taking over on Steiner for a minute, but you knew how it was going to end going in. We're almost an hour in and the wrestling alternative has not produced a single decent match. Not a good sign as this is slowly starting to turn into an entire program meant to further one angle only.)
After the match, Morgan hits the Blueprint Bomb, as called by Booker T about three hundred times, before Steiner locks Wiliams into the Steiner Recliner. HERE COMES ERIC YOUNG AND CONSEQUENCES CREED!! They take over for a moment before Booker T gets into the ring to stop the beating, while still doing commentary over the house microphone. This is some funny stuff as Booker and Steiner continue to beat down Young, Creed and Williams.
Booker and Nash welcome us back to the show and run down what we've seen up to this point and as they're talking Team 3-D's music cuts them off. They're on their way to the ring with their newly-won IWGP Tag Titles. Brother Ray asks for a microphone and says that he actually feels bad for Sting because they don't want to fight him tonight in a Handicap match. They try to lay the blame on Angle for putting him into the match and he says that seven or eight weeks ago he got left in a dumpster while Sting did nothing. He cuts the same promo as the past couple of weeks before asking why Sting is continuing to lie to himself and to the fans by walking down his path. He tells Sting not to take his ass-whipping personally because at Against All Odds, either he or Devon will become the next TNA World Heavyweight Champion.
Match Four: Handicap Match
Team 3-D vs. Sting
Random Impact Observation #2: I'm shocked that Steiner has been able to read his notes so far. I never had him pegged as a "reader".
Ray lays the shit talk on Sting as he gets into the ring and Sting poses with the belt. Devon and Sting start out and Devon takes over with an armbar into a side headlock into a hammerlock into a side headlock takeover. Devon cranks away on the headlock and Booker T lays out Sting's history going all the way back to the Mid-South with the Blade Runners. Devon works an arm-wringer into an armbar and Ray tags in as Devon lets go of the armbar. Ray gets into Sting's face and shoves him. Sting shoves him back and they hit a lock-up with Ray grabbing a side headlock again. Sting shoots him off into the ropes but eats a shoulderblock before catching Ray with a reverse elbow off the ropes. Ray catches Sting with some jabs and slams him, hitting an elbowdrop that gets a two-count before tagging in Devon. Devon with a forearm to the back and he hits a big right hand on Sting, but Sting fires back with some boots to the gut. Irish whip attempt, but Devon reverses it into a big reverse elbow and Sting bails out to the floor to get himself together. Scott Steiner gives him a bit of a pep talk and HERE COMES BROTHER RAY TO SEND STEINER INTO THE ANNOUNCE TABLE!! Steiner grabs Ray as he tries to get back into the ring and attacks him to let Sting take over on Brother Devon in the ring as we head to commercial.
Back from the break and Devon and Sting are trading shots with Sting coming out on top. He cinches Devon up and snap suplexes him over for a long two-count. Sting whips him in and they both go down with a double-clothesline!! The crowd claps for Brother Devon and he stirs, slowly crawling over to the corner and MAKING THE HOT TAG!! JABS TO STING!! Irish whip into a pair of clotheslines and Ray hits a SIDE SUPLEX! 1.....2...Sting barely kicks out. Sting recovers and gets to his feet, charging at Ray, but Ray catches him and hits a BOOKEND!! Steiner's up on the apron and distracting the referee and HERE COMES KURT ANGLE!! Angle hits a shot to the pills on Ray and Sting follows with a DDT and he only gets two. Devon's in the ring now and Sting reverses an Irish whip into a Stinger Splash!! He mounts Devon in the corner for punches, but Ray catches him and it's the 2-D!!! 1....2...ANGLE BREAKS IT UP!! There's the bell as Angle and Steiner take over on Brother Ray and Brother Devon.
Winners: Team 3-D (disqualification, Angle-ference) **
(Best of a bad lot so far. This was a decent enough match before the predictable ending and Sting actually didn't look as crippled as he has in recent weeks. There were some bright flashes, but in the end it was still forty-something Team 3-D in the ring with fifty-something Sting.)
Post-match, Booker T gets up from the commentary booth and heads out to get a table. Sting drops Ray with a chop and Booker pushes the table into the ring. They set it up and get ready to drop them through it, but HERE COMES MICK FOLEY!! He's got LAX and Abyss with him and they clear the ring of the Mafia!!!
After the break, Mick Foley has the microphone and says that the MEM's experiement is over. He says that two weeks ago, Hernandez cashed in his Feast or Fired opportunity and that after wrestling a hell of a match, it got cut short by the MEM. Foley says that because of that, he's going to get another shot at the TNA World Heavyweight Championship down the road. Foley also makes a match between Scott Steiner and Abyss which is going to be a weapons match, except Abyss will be the only one getting to use weapons. Foley also books a handicap match for the Impact main event with Kurt Angle taking on both members of LAX. Foley tells him to head to the back to realize that his booking career is over before trying to have a great day. Angle looks beside himself on the ramp as the MEM tries to regroup. We head to the back with Jim Cornette talking to Mike Tenay, Don West, Lauren and Dave Penzer and he tells them all to get back to work and for West and Tenay to head out to the announce desk because he's got a big announcement for Against All Odds.
Tenay and West are back at ringside and they've got Jim Cornette with them to make his big announcement. They run down the rest of the card that we already know and Cornette says that he's adding a match for some payback against the MEM. He makes a match between Booker T and Shane Sewell, saying that it's going to get personal at Against All Odds.
Match Five: Weapons Match
Scott Steiner vs. Abyss
Abyss makes way to the ring with about five trash cans worth of weapons and starts flinging them into the ring as Steiner tries to avoid being caught with anything. Steiner attacks Abyss with kicks and punches as he gets into the ring, laying a boot to the throat and choking away. Abyss gets to his feet and Steiner knees him back down before whipping him across into the ropes. Abyss ducks down for a back bodydrop but eats a kick to the face before dropping Steiner with a pair of clotheslines. HUGE avalanche from Abyss and he's got a chair in his hands. He wedges it between the turnbuckles and heads to the outside as Steiner tries to get some weapons. Abyss kicks Steiner in the gut and brings him over to the ringside table, knocking Steiner head-first into the ring bell. He rams Steiner into the Spanish announce table and charges at Steiner, but Steiner gets out of the way and Abyss runs right through the wall!! It's time for a commercial break!!
Back from the break and Steiner hits his push-up elbowdrop in the ring as we see replays of the Abyss misfire through the wall. Steiner heads out to the floor and brings a chair into the ring with the referee keeping him from using it on Abyss. Abyss punches the chair into Steiner's face and picks up a trash can, WAFFLING Steiner in the head with it. Abyss with the cover and he gets a long, LONG two-count. Abyss with an Irish whip, but Steiner reverses, hitting a low blow on Abyss before sending him face-first into the chair wedged between the buckles. Steiner's got the ring bell now and he heads back into the ring as the referee fights him again. Abyss hits the goozle and forces Steiner to drop the bell before chokeslamming him onto the trashcan!! 1....2...Steiner kicks out!! Abyss picks up the ring bell and Steiner gets the pipe and he hits the bell with the pipe right in front of Abyss' face. Steiner's flinging weapons everywhere before grabbing a chair and WAFFLING the shit out of Abyss with chairshots. Steiner chokes Abyss in the corner with the chair and the LIGHTS ARE OUT IN THE IMPACT ZONE!! HERE COMES SUICIDE!! Kicks to Steiner and he hits an elbow to the top of Steiner's head before dropping him with a snap mare-style move into the second turnbuckle. Abyss turns around and sees Suicide in the ring as the lights go back out. The lights come back on and Suicide is gone!!
(It had its moments like almost every other Abyss match involving weapons, but there's something inherently wrong about a weapons match ending in a DQ. I will say that in the post-match, Christopher Daniels makes a better Suicide than Kazarian ever did. I just wish we could see Daniels back as The Fallen Angel instead of in this Suicide nonsense. I will also say that TNA needs to retire the wall-breaking spot for at least six months or so because they've done it way too often for my tastes and I've only been covering this show since Thanksgiving)
Apparently Brutus Magnus is going to debut next week, and that leads into a video package about TNA's latest trip to Europe, featuring highlights of the shows in Ireland, Scotland and the UK. They talk about the TNA attendance record set at the Wembley Arena in London and thank the fans for all of their support throughout Europe. From there, Lauren's in the back with two of the schmucks from the upcoming Toughest Cowboy reality show on Spike. Apparently, the guy who wins it gets a ranch. Meh. Beer Money Inc. crashes the party and Storm asks what makes them real cowboys because they've rode a bull for eight seconds, but he's rode their mommas for way longer and they were twice as big. Tremendous.
Match Six: Handicap Match
LAX vs. Kurt Angle
Angle gets a ton of heat and a big "You Suck" chant as he makes his way down the ramp. Homicide starts things out with Angle and a big "LAX" chant fires up from the crowd, backing Angle off to take a moment. They hit a lock-up and Angle goes behind, but Homicide reverses and drops Angle with a takedown into a front facelock. Angle reverses to a hammerlock and Homicide reverses with a drop toehold back into the front facelock. Homicide moves to an arm-wringer and Angle pushes him back into the corner before cheapshotting him to the gut off the break. Right hands from Angle and he hits a big European uppercut before missing a clothesline off of an Irish whip. Homicide hits a tilt-a-whirl hurrancanrana and follows it up with a shoulderblock off the ropes before tagging in Hernandez. Hernandez hits a clothesline and they double-team with Homicide scoring a low dropkick before Hernandez gets a two-count. Angle kicks Hernandez in the gut and hits a European uppercut before getting FLUNG across the ring by a Hernandez shoulderblock. Hernandez clotheslines Angle up and over the top to the floor and he's gonna fly!! SUPERMEX PLANCHA!! Angle's down on the floor and Hernandez picks him up to fire him into the ring as we hit the final commercial of the night!
After the commercial, Angle's got Homicide in a side headlock, but Homicide breaks free and bounces off the ropes. Angle catches Homicide with a backbreaker before just CHUCKING him with an overhead suplex. Angle DROPS THE STRAPS!! He's setting up Homicide and he tries for an Angle slam, but Homicide reverses!! Angle reverses the reversal and locks in the Anklelock!! Homicide kicks free and manages to hit a reversal on the Angle slam into a DDT!! HOT TAG TO HERNANDEZ!! NO!!! Angle distracted the referee and Earl Hebner sends Hernandez back out to the apron. Angle takes over with boots to the gut in the corner on Homicide, choking him across the bottom turnbuckle with his boot. Snap mare out of the corner and Angle's right into a reverse chinlock. Homicide gets back to his feet and hits some shots to the gut before catching an Angle kick into a dragonscrew legdrag. Homicide tries to turn Angle with a Boston crab, but Angle kicks him off before trying for a German suplex. Homicide reverses and tries one of his own, but Angle blocks it and rolls back into the Anklelock!! Homicide is SCREAMING in pain, but Angle won't let go, dragging him back into the middle of the ring!! Homicide rolls through and Hernandez slingshots over the top rope into a shoulderblock!! Clotheslines send Angle flying and he Irish whips Angle into the corner for a HUGE SPLASH!! Hernandez hits the shirt-aided hip toss and tries another Irish whip, but Angle reverses. Hernandez catches Angle trying for a move and hits a HUGE sit-out powerbomb. Hernandez is setting up for the Border Toss, but Angle catches his feet on the ropes and gets free of it. He sends Hernandez through the ropes to the floor and Homicide catches Angle in a roll-up for a two-count. They trade reversals and Homicide hits a GRINGO CUTTER!! 1...2...Angle kicks out!! Homicide sets Angle up for the Gringo Killer, but Angle reverses into the Angle slam!! 1....2...3!!! Angle survives and wins!!
Winner: Kurt Angle (pinfall, Angle slam) ***1/4
(Not a surprise that a match featuring Homicide, Hernandez and Angle would be the best match of the night. All three guys worked hard and this was a handicap match that was actually good for a change. LAX held their own with Angle and it could be fun to see Hernandez cash in his Feast or Fired re-shot against Angle down the road if he wins the belt at AAO. This was a great way to finish an extremely lackluster show and easily one of the better handicap matches I've seen in a while. Angle looks great for picking up the win, but LAX looked decent too for holding their own with Angle right to the end.)
We close the show with a shot of someone from behind and as he turns, it's Samoa Joe!! He tells the world that it's time to introduce the Main Event Mafia to the real Samoa Joe!! Joe's got a Samoan tattoo on his face, Umaga-style and it looks like he'll be back before we know it!!

I'm pretty sure Team 3D are still in their 30s, not 40s.

JOE'S GONNA KILL YOU!
Posted By: =O! (Guest) on January 29, 2009 at 11:23 PM
Booker T should never be allowed to do commentary again! I literally wanted to kill him by putting him in a room and making him listen to his commentary for about a month or at least until blood start coming out of his ears. This was pretty much a crap show and what the fuck has happenned to the women's division?!

"They run down the rest of the card that we already know"
That was the first time Morgan vs Abyss, Petey vs Steiner & Beer Money (c) vs Lethal Consequences was announced.

The Main Event was good although I hate him going over the companys top tag team alone who does he think he is HHH???
and its good to see Joe back although I don't like him looking like umaga
Umaga was kind of a Joe rip off you know unstoppable samoan monster
and don't call Joe a rip off hes been the same charachter for years
but now people are going to be saying Joe's ripping off Umaga
even though its just some Samoan war paint thing people will take it the wrong way

Are Chet Lemon & Black Snow a permanent fixture as TNA's commentary team or was it just a one-shot deal?
Posted By: igotstaknow (Guest) on January 29, 2009 at 11:31 PM
I am glad to see that Mankane um i mean Abyss is starting to go back to his old character instead of being Eugene.
That was a great promo by Joe at the end of the show. I like the face paint but they should cover his whole face and also grow his hair out so it can be braided.... Yeah Joemaga!!!
Guess they are running out of ideas.

I just watched the show and all I will say is that with the exception of Angle vs LAX, this was a pretty bad show this week. I am not going to nitpick at all of the bad stuff on the show and just say that overall, it was bad. Hopefully, next week will be a better show.

I dont care if a few matches were subpar....this was a superb show
I was laughing my ass of the entire show with big chett lemon and black snow. Booker's kickin ass in the ring and announcing at the same time and I loved every minute of it. Steiner also showed me some comedy gold and we had 2 or 3 good matches
what more do you guys want?-__- This impact was better than most Raw shows

I love Kurt Angle but he shouldn't have beaten L A X tonight. Imo he should have jobbed to Hernandez. Imo it would have built up Hernandez to challenge him for the beLt (after Angle wins it AAO)They probably will face each other at Destination X(and Hernandez going over Angle this week would have added intringue to the match)Reading Impact spoilers I thought it was gonna be an albatross(and nearly decided to skip it) I am glad I watched it. Black Snow and Chet Lemon were incredibly entertaining as announcers(in fact it was the first time Booker was entertaining in his Tna run imo) Scott Steiner is always great on the mic (in a perverse way) well tonight he was uproarous as a ring announcer. The Team 3-D vs Sting match was surpringly good and got a good amount of time. Sting looked like he was moving around much better. Abyss Vs Steiner was better than expected too. Their was some stupidity too like Booker Vs the refs and the continued burying of Petey(even Booker mocked his still looking like Steiner get a clue and change the look) he also has been booked to look like another Barry Horowitz(who expects him to beat Steiner at the next ppv?) I could care less about Sewell or his match with Booker. I can't get excited about ''the Real Samoa Joe'' returning. Since Russo has become booker again they have dropped the ball so many times with Joe. Why should anyone expect they'll get it right this time? It is amazing how badly Russo has booked him so badly. In his first Year and a half he was booked as the biggest bad ass in Wrestling(and was the hottest act in wrestling) Russo destroyed him by having him job too much and making him a whiner instead of a badass.

Chet Snow and especially Black Snow were absolutely amazing. Booker kept doing commentary while kicking ass. That was epic. The matches sucked but the commentary was gold.
But leave to TNA to label something a hardcore weapons match and still manage to have it end in a DQ.

TNA being this bad isnt just a one shot deal is it?
Posted By: RVD (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 12:13 AM
Was Christopher Daniels being suicide tonight for good or was it a one time thing?
Posted By: Guest#2105 (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 12:13 AM
Team 3-D are in their mid 30's. Where were Shelley and Sabin tonight?

"Earl did screw Bret"- Kevin Nash is awesome!
Posted By: Guest#2842 (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 12:31 AM
Kevin Nash is always brilliant on the mic. Awesome commentary. I wonder, since Suicide came after The Mafia, they are going to unmask him as Chris Daniels at some point in the feud.
Samoa Joe at the end was awesome!!!

The commentary was really funny. They should have Nash and Booker do it all of the time because the other 2 guys are horrible.

You see this is exactly why no successful wrestling promotion can ever cater to the IWC.
The IWC is always crying about match times, and too many skits, or whatever.
The truth is the success of a televised wrestling show has nothing to do with actual match lengths.
It's storytelling and characters that pulls in an audience. The wrestling while needing to be competent is secondary to the characters.
ECW catered to the IWC and while I loved the ECW product catering to that audience really didn't work from a business perspective.
Ring Of Honor caters to the IWC and to longer matches and if fans really wanted to see that Ring Of Honor would fill stadiums instead of High School gymnasiums.
Plus Impact is a free TV show. Free TV in wrestling has always been used as a way to build up to the big matches that you have to pay for and it's there that the matches will deliver.
I'm sure during the attitude era there were smart fans that were crying this sucks where's the wrestling but it didn't matter because the ratings were going through the roof and WWE was doing record business.
Those fans that were complaining were unimportant just like now because even though they complain they still watch it. The trick is bringing in the audience that isn't a hardcore wrestling fan and that's how you build an audience and that audience wants entertainment, they're bored by longer matches.
It's too bad that the art of wrestling has to suffer but that's business.

The MEM portion of the show was different & funny, while still advancing the undercard fueds.
"Black Snow" and "Chett Lemon" were great on commentary(almsot as good as Striker/Grisham). As for Nash's name, it was probably a shout-out to the former ballplayer Chet Lemon who used to play for Nash's hometown Detroit Tigers.
The Sting/Team 3-D match was a better than one would expect, and the main event was as tight a handicap match as I've seen in years.
The Suicide deal is played out.
Joe is gonna kill you!!!
I give the show an 8.5 out of 10. OneEasily this was the most all-around entertaining Impact this year.

Very interesting Impact. Some funny stuff and some really bad stuff. Overall, I enjoyed it. I'm glad Hernandez is getting another shot at the World Title and awesome that the "Real" Samoa Joe is returning. Can't wait to see what goes down
Posted By: highheatkingsb (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 01:11 AM
I hope that Samoa Joe is returning to his old "ass-kicking" self from when he was wrestling in the X-Division and Ring of Honor.
Tonight actually wasn't a bad show. The first half was hilarious and Booker T definitely gets MVP of the night from me for his hilarious commentating. The announcement of Hernandez getting another title shot was cool and the main even wasn't half bad. It was smart to have Angle win by having him pin Homicide. It doesn't make Angle look weak and it still protects Hernandez by not having him get pinned. Still though, whatever happened to Homicide's X-Division title shot?
Posted By: theguy (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 01:17 AM
Booker T on commentary is the only reason I want to watch this show. Booker as a face got old in like 2004.
However, Booker as a heel is one of the more entertaining wrestlers of this decade. With Booker, the more ridiculous he gets, the more entertaining he is to me. I'm hoping he goes through the entire litany of fake accents, calls people dastardly customers and references Bret Hart 50 times on commentary when I get around to watching this show. If that did happen, I can safely say this would be the most entertaining Impact in years. Hell if it is what happens, I might just start watching Impact more than once every few months again to see what Booker will come up with next.

Angle and Joe AGAIN? Is there really any reason to tune into this show since the storylines don't change for about 2 months straight?
Posted By: Seriously (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 01:40 AM
Line of the night was when Booker laid hands on Hebner.
Steiner (on commentary): "I don't know if you've heard this but he screwed Bret you know."

The "IWC" cracks me up some times.
Granted, I didn't think this was a blow-away show, it was beyond entertaining, and the action, overall was solid.
Wrestling wise, Angle was Angle, LAX was able to go toe-to-toe with Kurt, Sting/Team 3D was a lot better than it had any right to be, Morgan is getting over as the dick-heel, Petey is getting over as a bonafide babyface, and Booker was ridiculously entertaining tonight, in the ring and on the stick.
Looking at it, the only thing that near outright sucked was the Knockout's match, for the mere reason that ODB, who has a title match against Kong coming up, was made to look pretty weak against her.
Still, the action was solid, and they did a lot to further set-up the PPV coming up in two weeks, without giving away to much stuff.
Going into the show, the MEM had already taken out JOE, AJ, Rhyno and Jarrett, and Bubba and Petey were just coming back from injury. EY, Lethal and Creed were still around, but in the context of the angle, the Frontline was out of commission.
What did you expect but a MEM takeover?
So, the MEM had their run of the show, for a bit, until Foley came back with, pretty much, what was left of TNA's top talent, LAX and Abyss.
TNA gets some semblance of control back, and the show moves forward from there.
The company's main angle is advanced, with MEM finally reaching the apex of control in the fight, and the upcoming PPV continues to take shape.
Four matches for the next PPV are already set, with the TNA title match and Abyss/Morgan being the draws, so far, and, in addition, we get the return of JOE to TNA!
Not what I would call a good or great show, but it delivered a solid and entertaining 2 hours of TV, while also advancing angles and building the PPV.
The IWC needs to stop crying.
If all you care about is seeing high workrate from TNA, pluck down the $30, like the rest of us, and pay to see a PPV.
TNA has delivered good shows, with excellent matches for the last year and a half straight.
Instead of just wishing that TNA just "blows it's load" by putting all their classics on free TV, where they make no money, domestically.
Posted By: scipio2009 (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 04:56 AM
Geez The Frontline looked just plain pathetic. Are we supposed to take them seriously when they need Mick Foley's broken down ass to fight their battles for them?
Posted By: Guest#7435 (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 05:10 AM
Geez, heaven forbid a show could try a complete change of pace and dare to risk losing a few stars for their matches. Rating this show on the quality of a few matches entirely misses the point. PPVs are for top matches. TV shows are to entertain and build to the PPV
Posted By: Donners (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 05:12 AM
Ok yes the MEM take over in the beginning was only saved by the great commentary that Nash, Booker, and Steiner gave... but i really wanna see a truly pissed off Joe, and yes its TNA's shot at poking fun at Umaga, i mean come on, the only reason WWE created Umaga was because they couldn't have Samoa Joe... so its all fair in wrestling and war...
Posted By: Tundastorm (Registered) on January 30, 2009 at 06:04 AM
Raw does a bad show and Impact just has to top it. Well good job TNA, you did it!
Shit didnt make sense at all and mix it with aful matches and this is what you get. Of course your used to things dont make sense on Impact, but this was twice the amount!
Posted By: Spike (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 06:07 AM
I really enjoyed the commentary. I will let the ratings speak for themselves but it was intesting and held my attention.
I know the IWC is usually kids too young to get into college or guys that are real old and living in their moms basements still so they usually have a hard time following stories. Ill explain it:
MEM was in charge and thus their only goal was to hurt people they did not like. The matches werent meant to be stellar, they were meant to forward a storyline of a hostile take over. Stop complaining about match quality and who is getting BERRIED for once and just enjoy the fucking story.

What a fucking horseshit show. If Booker does commentary again, I'll never watch again. He was more irratating to listen to than Mark Madden. And he was really irratating.
The hell with it, I'm done.
Fuck you TNA, Vince Russo, Jeff Jarrett and whoever else that thought this trainwreck was a good idea. That was 2 hours of my life I'll never get back. You assholes owe me!
Posted By: chucky (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 08:48 AM
while that was probably the worst Impact ever...i have to say that Nash and Booker were funny doing commentary though but the show it self sucked big time...they keep this shit up and ROH will be beating them in the ratings also
Posted By: traeleon (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 09:08 AM
One of the funniest shows I've seen in quite awhile. Booker as Black Snow and Big Sexy as Chett Lemon were great. They showed more knowledge, humor, and charisma in that one hour than Don West seems to have ever shown in his entire run with TNA as a commentator. I understand why Mick had to put an end to it, but keeping at least one of those two on commentary would be good. West wouldn't be missed. As for hour two, well, I would have preferred not to have Angle pin Homicide clean, but that's just my only gripe. As for the end, Killer Samoa Joe is back, bitches!!!
Posted By: RD81 (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 09:17 AM
Angle and Joe AGAIN? Is there really any reason to tune into this show since the storylines don't change for about 2 months straight?
Posted By: Seriously (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 01:40 AM
That's right, because on Raw the storylines are always fresh between Cena, Orton, and the McMahons, and on SD with HUNTOR, Edge, and Undertaker.
Anyway, tonight's episode was more entertaining than I think you gave it credit for Randy. Kevin Nash was born to do commentary and I hope he will do it some more. His shoot comments are GOLD!
The fact that the MEM got back at most of the Frontline shows that each week one of the two groups will get the upper hand. The return of Samoa Joe and AJ Styles and Jarrett (hopefully Christopher Daniels as well) will lead to the end of this angle.
Also, we saw the beginning of what could be a great heel buildup in Matt Morgan. If he can continue to get better on the mic then he would really make a great World Champ.
Sting is definitely on his way out, and with Angle hopefully winning the title at AAO, I believe the MEM will become even more of a hated group. It will be interesting to see who they add.
Yes, the wrestling wasn't great tonight until the main event, but the commentary and angle buildup was entertaining enough. That's more than what I can say about any episode of Raw or Smackdown.

James Storm, confronting the stars of the "Toughest Cowboy" reality show: "What makes you guys real cowboys? Just cuz you rode that [bull -- there's a bull backstage] for eight seconds? I must be the world's GREATEST cowboy, cuz I rode your momma and she's TWICE as fat!"
Posted By: Guest#1984 (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 10:02 AM
Interesting show this week. I like that they did something different and played with the format of it. This reminds of when the NWO would randomly take over WCW. It builds up the MEM as a strong and powerful rebel group. although, logic asks why Jim Cornette just let them take over. And where was Jeff Jarrett to stop all this?
Kevin Nash and Booker T were suprisingly funny on commentary, although Booker got a bit annoying at times. And the rules with the weapons match invvoling Scott Steiner and Abyss were retarted. What's even more shocking is that on commentary Scott was actually slightly coherent....
Posted By: lilwayne1 (Registered) on January 30, 2009 at 11:25 AM
A couple more to add to the list of great lines from the announce crew -- during the ODB match, one of them made a comment about ODB getting clotheslined "right in the Adam's apple." I also got a laugh out of them complaining when Team 3D switched out without a tag early in the match -- "you'd think after 20 times, they'd know how to tag in and out."
Posted By: Guest#9272 (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 11:36 AM
The first half of Impact was probably the most entertaining wrestling TV show I've seen in a LONG time.
I'm pretty sure Booker as Black Snow was doing, for whatever reason, a Scott Ferall impersonation. Shake it up.
I also laughed out loud when I saw Nash's name "Chet Lemon". Only somebody over 25 from Detroit (which I am) would get that referrence. If Guest#1348 actually knew that rather than doing a Google or Wiki search then kudos and a case of Vernors to him.
I only wish Book had let Kev talk a little more. I'm sure it was part of the gag but he never shut up, even continuing to ramble while Kev was cracking a joke.
That show made me wish Nash would somehow stay out on commentary, sort of like how The Alliance had Paul Heyman back in '01.
Last night's show wasn't about "rasslin" folks, it was about entertainment and story and I for one enjoyed (most of) it.
Posted By: JTX (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 11:46 AM
well, i only caught the 2nd hour, 3d vs sting was alright until the interference, steiner vs abyss was meh, lax vs kurt angle was good. I wouldv'e liked to have seen lax pick up the victory as I mostly hate when 1 wrestler beats a really good tag-team. If we learned anything from the commentary, it's that Kevin nash DEFINITELY has a career in color-commentating when he retires. The Somoa Joe promo was done really well, got me excited for next week. I hope they really let him go back to his old self. BTW, what's up with the somans and the tatoos on their face, Rock,Umaga,Joe....who's next

I'm not real sure why everyone's raging on the matches. Yes, they kinda sucked. They were SUPPOSED TO! The bad guys were booking them. Of course they're going to suck.

Angle vs. LAX was a really good match. It would have been nice if just one of LAX was allowed to take Angle to the limit instead of both of them. The rest of the show was a complete disaster. Worse then Shane's phantom punches.
Posted By: Guest#3889 (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 01:14 PM

Anyone else seem to think TNA is going for a more adult product to compete with WWE's family-friendly thing? The way they subtly slip in profanity and have more wild brawls?
Russo's hands were all over the backstage segements, especially with the ref's "Are you high?" interjection.

As someone who spends more time reading wrestling reports here than watching wrestling TV these days I have to say the first hour of last night's show was gold.
Yes there were times I wished Booker would shut up but that was the gimmick. I laughed so hard a few times and that hasn't happened watching wrestling for me in years. I swear I almost died when Booker was commentating as he was stomping a dude.
Sure the wrestling sucked and I'm usually the first to say bad wrestling, bad show but dang, at least for the first hour I loved Impact last night.
I will say that if nothing else hopefully it will point out how TNA's currenty biggest problem is amazingly not Russo but instead the worst announcing team in the history of wrestling.

Booker and Nash on commentary and Steiner as the ring announcer was the most entertaining part of Impact. The rest was just gah-bage!

Sure booking wise (with a PPV coming up) and wrestling wise it was bad. Eventough I really enjoyed the first hour of impact, Scott Steiner was gold. I understand people (IWC) are bitching about this show, but keep in mind even with all the "experience" the WWE has, there shows aren't that much better...
Posted By: Jason St.Laire (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 05:48 PM
The only rights about this show were the main event, restoring the show, and Samoa Joe's return video. Fix that damn sound and Booker can do better commentary than that in his regular voice. I've heard him before.
Posted By: Brian (Guest) on January 30, 2009 at 07:51 PM
"That Matt Morgan is a big guy"
"ya know Earl did screw Bret"
...alot more.
This Show with Chet Lemon and Black Snow was beyond comedy gold and a real throwback to the NWO takeover. I didn't fast forward one minute of the first hour, first time that ever happened. If TNA puts Snow and Lemon on announcing, I'll swear off WWE forever. That first hour made my year so far. If you don't like it, grow a brain. Pure Genius Russo, pure genius.

c'mon.. the fact the crowd jumped on steiner was great, its rare to have the opportunity to chant "hooked on phonics" at a wrestling event
well it was a total 'vic venom' play of the 'nwo' take over shows... but Book just was too much, he should have taken the mic in the ring during the refs match as well because during the last spot of their commentary was fire!!
nash pointing out how similar booker t looked to black snow, and it goes right over the einsteiners head.. beautiful!! Wait til Scotty hears that Black Snow referenced the 'steiner recliner' as a 'camel clutch'... ask tanay what happens when you mess those facts up?? Popcorn muscles gooooo crazy!!
All in all that was the best tv of 2009, at least the hour of chett lemon and black snow

I wish Steiner would use the laid-back voice he did in the commentary for his promos.
For everybody complaining about how bad Booker's commentary was I have to question...
Do any of you even WATCH the show? Did you not even realize he was immitaing Don West? Really... how the hell can anyone say they have watched more than 30 minutes of any random Impact episode and NOT realize that "Black Snow" was spot-on parody of West?

The first three matches and Scott Steiner's ring announcing were terrible. The last three matches were good. But why start Abyss in a feud with the MEM when he is already in one with Matt Morgan? It was good to see a main event without outside interference, though. As for Kevin Nash and Booker T's commentary, they each did better than Don West.
Posted By: Sting/Flair fan (Guest) on February 01, 2009 at 04:16 PM
