411's ECW on Sci-Fi Report 2.17.09
Posted by Michael Bauer on 02.17.2009
Christian and Swagger go head to head again before they meet for the ECW Title next week!
Welcome to the ECW on Sci-Fi! As always, I am Michael Bauer, your 411 ECW Re-capper.
411 Wrestling is hiring an Alternate ECW Recapper! Unlike my recaps, this is not meant to be a strict play by play. Past examples of what we are looking for can be seen if you look at The Palace of Wisdom that Wilcox did for a few weeks. You can always check The Dope on Smackdown or any other recap that isn't done live for other examples of what has been done in the past. Please send all samples to larrytcsonka@yahoo.com. It may seem like a small piece of 411mania, but all staff members get to participate in Roundtables all over the 411mania site, vote in the Wrestler of the Week, and get invited to join in on some of the most read articles on 411mania. Plus it is a ton of fun!
Now to the ECW Recap…
We open with video to recap the return of Christian and his encounter with Jack Swagger to name himself the next contender to the title. Todd Grisham and Matt Striker at ringside as always.
The Boogeyman vs. Paul Burchill (with Katie Lea)
The Boogeyman dropped his clock, so he didn't clock himself for the pyro this time. Burchill apparently got this match because he went nuts on a staff member of ECW with a verbal assault. The bell rings and Burchill goes right on the attack with punches and shoulder blocks in the corner. Burchill hits the double knee strike in the corner and stalks the Boogeyman. Boogeyman blocks a punch and hits one of his own, but Burchill hits a knee to the gut. Burchill gets whipped in the corner and Boogeyman hits a back elbow. Burchill get whipped across and a huge splash to the back. Boogeyman gets a bodyslam and starts to go after his own worms. Burchill sees it and rolls up the Boogeyman with a school boy for the three count at the 2:00 mark.
Winner: Paul Burchill
Match Rating: ¼* That was a pretty pathetic excuse of a match.
We gets photo shots of Swagger beating Finlay at No Way Out. We then find out that Christian faces Swagger for the ECW Title next week.
John Morrison (with The Miz) vs. Tommy Dreamer
The bell rings and Morrison gets a go behind, but Dreamer breaks and hits a shoulder block. Morrison hits a series of arm drag takedowns, but Dreamer hits a drop toe hold and clotheslines Morrison to the floor. Dreamer goes on the ring apron, but Miz distracts him. Morrison grabs Dreamer by the arm and drops him right on the floor with a thud. Dreamer rolled into the ring and Morrison gets a two count. Morrison with stiff kicks to the back and locks in a sleeperhold. Dreamer gets to his feet and punches out, but Morrison blocks and tries for a suplex. Dreamer blocks and hits the suplex as The Miz gets tossed from ringside. Dreamer connects with the high impact arsenal with a neckbreaker, followed by a huge bulldog off the ropes. Dreamer tries for the Tree of Woe, but Morrison slips out. Dreamer ducks the springboard enziguri and connects with the DDT, but Morrison gets his foot on the ropes. Dreamer goes up top, but Morrison drops him down onto the turnbuckle. Morrison goes up also, but Dreamer throws him off. Dreamer leaps for a double axe handle, but Morrison kicks him in the gut and hits the Moonlight Drive for the three count at 3:50.
Winner: John Morrison
Match Rating: *3/4 Not horrible and Dreamer looked good, but still not long enough to mean much.
Backstage, Finlay and Hornswoggle are getting ready for the main event as Christian shows up. They talk about Hornswoggle and Christian wants to be sure he will not be a distraction tonight.
Tyson Kidd (w/Natalya) vs. Caden Matthews
Ok, this should be a foregone conclusion. The bell rings and Tyson Kidd grounds Matthews and gets a headlock. Matthews gets to the ropes. Another lockup and Kidd hits a knee to the head and a series of kicks for a two count. Tyson Kidd with more kicks to the back and face before another two count. Tyson Kidd runs into an elbow, but gets back to his kicks. Matthews goes to the ropes and Kidd springboards to the outside and hits a legdrop to the back of the neck. Kidd goes to the top rope and hits a Shawn Michaels-esque elbow to the chest of Matthews for a three count at around 1:30.
Winner: Tyson Kidd
Match Rating: ½* Another bland jobber squash.
Backstage, Ricky Ortiz runs into Tommy Dreamer and tells him that he was the only person to welcome him and give him advice. He tells him that he is ECW and that he needs to "Rally Up".
We go back to Todd and Matt, who talk about Austin in the Hall of Fame and then we get the Funk Brother's video package for the Hall of Fame.
Mark Henry and Jack Swagger vs. Finlay and Christian
Mark Henry and Jack Swagger come out to the ring separately before we head to commercial. Christian gets a freaking nice pop as the Peep signs are back! Finlay got just as good as one though. The bell rings and Christian starts against Mark Henry and Henry just throws Christian off of him like a rag doll. Christian backed into the corner, ducks a punch, and gets Henry angry with a series of right hands. Christian off the ropes and Henry dumps him with a flap jack. Christian slips out of a bodyslam and hits a chop block before tagging in Finlay. Finlay gets another chop block and a two count. Henry up quickly and just clubs on Finlay before tagging in Swagger, who does the same. Finlay back to his feet and he connects with a short arm clothesline. Christian tagged in and he gets caught by Swagger coming off the ropes, but Christian reverses into a sunset flip for a two count. Christian looks for a tag, but Finlay is on the floor with Hornswoggle. Christian looks annoyed as Finlay tags in and we go to a commercial at 2:40.
Back at 7:00 and Swagger backs Finlay into the corner and he dumps Finlay to the floor. Henry comes over and nails Finlay with a vicious clothesline. Swagger clubs Finlay and rolls him into the ring. Finlay gets shoved shoulder first into the corner as Henry is tagged in. Henry clubs the arm of Finlay and gets a two count. Finlay choked on the second rope and Swagger is tagged in. Swagger with a back suplex for a two count and he goes to the reverse bearhug. Finlay gets a jawbreaker, but Swagger was up quick for a clothesline. Henry tagged in and he stands on the chest on Finlay. Finlay is up and he gets punched into the corner, followed by shoulders by Henry. Finlay locked in a reverse chinlock by Swagger. Finlay close to a tag, but Swagger drives him back into the opposite corner. Henry is tagged in, but he misses an elbow drop. Swagger and Christian tagged in. Swagger tries for a clothesline, but runs into Henry. Christian rolls up Swagger and gets a two count. Swagger dropped on the second rope and Christian stands on his back up breaking at four. Christian off the ropes and Swagger hits a belly to belly suplex for a two count. Christian drops Swagger and goes up top, but Tony Atlas gets the distraction until he is shoved down. Swagger heads up top, but he gets thrown down and Christian hits a headbutt. Mark Henry in to break the pin, but Hornswoggle runs in and starts biting Henry. Finlay has the shillelagh and he cracks Henry over the head. Swagger shoves Finlay out and grabs Christian for the Gutwrench Powerbomb. Christian slips out though and slips into an Unprettier for the three count at 13:00.
Winners: Finlay and Christian
Match Rating: **3/4 This was a fine main event, but I have to question Christian pinning Swagger for the second straight week.

It's great to see Christian return with such momentum, but I also question the jobbing-out of Jack Swagger two consecutive weeks in a row, Mr. Bauer.

Pumphandle uhh, whatever the hell it was =/= DDT
Posted By: Nitty McNitpicker (Guest) on February 17, 2009 at 10:16 PM
Apparently, it's not the Unprettier anymore. Striker called it "The Killswitch". Whatever...
Posted By: Slick Rick (Guest) on February 17, 2009 at 10:19 PM
Christian pinning Swagger two weeks in a row will make a lot of sense if he loses next week (which I think is likely, so it can lead to a WrestleMania match) and is old-school booking. You book the heel champ to lose in non-title matches (somewhat, in this case) clean, to build up the challenger and make the crowd believe that the champ can be beaten. Then during the title match the champ squeaks by, usually by some sort of heel tactics (especially if it's going to lead to a rematch down the line).
I do have one question, though: Did anyone else hear Striker call the Unprettier "The Killswitch" or did I misunderstand something. Did they finally rename the maneuver? Not that I mind, Killswitch is a much better name for a finisher, though it doesn't seem to be something that would get by the PG thing they're pushing nowadays...

So, the unprettier is the killswitch now? Fine with me. Whatever.

anotha predictable ecw show full of 3 aush matches not very entertaining tv. i seem to question y they devalue swagger as champ by having christian pin him y couldn't christian pin henry....cuz its black history month lol...luv tyson kids music his finisher sucks his hair sucks boogeyman losing in 2 mins not good how could anyone see boogeyman gettin past the low card for god sakes give this man a push or sumin like he has no credible victories in his 3 or 4 years there either use him excuse him hell i'll pay to see boogey and taker go at it like at least give boogey betta people to face like squashing jobbers n noble ain't goin no where as far christian goes hopefully he doesn't win the belt next week cuz if he does that wee just made jack swagger look mediocore like i would want christian to win at mania so i expect christian to get the dq victory. randys rko on steph sick and triple h growling like he damn wolf i thought he was gonna rip off his shirt n howl lol

Anypone else notice how much Swagger patterns his style after Kurt Angle? It 9is not like it's a bad thing as you'd rather see him remind you of Angle in the ring than dreck like Batista. I can't imagine him jobbing again next week to Christian. Finlay will get involved and either cost Christian to get pinned or lose by dq and it will lead to a triple threat match at Wm25. I can't say I thought much of The Dreamer of Boogeyman matches.

Did Kurt Angle train Swagger? Just wondering. The last few weeks were the first time I saw Swagger and his wrestling style and even alot of his moves are Angle like.
Posted By: james (Guest) on February 17, 2009 at 10:37 PM
I wish ECW went back to taping with Smackdown ever sense it started taping with RAW it hasn't been so good.
Posted By: The Gster (Guest) on February 17, 2009 at 10:41 PM
How long before HHH buries this Swagger kid? I am sure he'll get the writers to have Swagger do comedy bits and come off like a goofy heel like he did to Angle years ago.
Posted By: steve o (Guest) on February 17, 2009 at 10:42 PM
Swagger looks a bit like Brock Lesnar and wrestles like Kurt Angle I like him!

Swagger is overpushed anyway so LOL@questioning him losing for a few weeks.

I did apply for that spot as an ECW recaper. but nothing :(

So, Christian came back to fight tag matches on ECW? Yeah, this is working out real well for him. When he left he was maybe a mid carder, he became a main eventer in TNA and now he returns back to...the mid card. I guess he can just hope he gets drafted to RAW after WM or something.
Posted By: Serp (Guest) on February 17, 2009 at 11:39 PM
Am I the only person that thinks Swagger is horrible? Angle like? Really? Everytime he tries to throw a belly to belly Magnum TA throws something at his tv and it's only a matter of time before he drops someone on their head. Angle was gold on the mic and in the ring when they finally put him on tv. Suffering Swagger is still green as hell. Tyson Kidd/TJ Wilson has a TON of potential from his non-ECW work and say what you want about his hair but Natalya likes it so there must be something good about it. Insult, ridicule or make any smarky comment you'd like and have a good day.
Posted By: Flying Dutchman (Guest) on February 18, 2009 at 12:01 AM
who cares about all these fake ass new gen ECW smarks! I think this brand has been and will be crap ever since mcmahonangement started this up again. They do not even have the correct name for ECW PPV, so much for extreme rules! WWE has gone soft! PG'ing the whole lot makes it seem pointless to tune in. Just go to youtube and scan the gist of each match. No cool promos, no ECW Tag team titles, TV title, hell why put out a product with ONE title! It is not even a decent looking title. It looks like a nestle crunch bar before you get to the chocolate and a microwave dinner with leather! Championship belt= GOLD no silver, gawd how lame!

Weird bit of trivia- The Killswitch was what they were originally calling the Proto-bomb when it was Cena's finisher before the he switched to the modified DVD which would become the FU.
Sounds like they wanted to make sure WWE's Christian was distinguished from TNA's Christian Cage so they dipped into their cache of move names and grabbed the first one off the pile.
I have to say that I think it's a pretty generic name for a move, especially since it has nothing to do with Christian. The Unprettier is a name that has personality to it and it makes sense since the guy is being dropped right on his face. It's not that big a deal but I wish WWE would quit renaming moves and pretending that the audience doesn't notice the difference.
Posted By: Guest#1248 (Guest) on February 18, 2009 at 01:13 AM
Christian brings ECW to life, it's a shame it has such a slim roster which results in the same matches over and over again.
Posted By: >(C) (Guest) on February 18, 2009 at 01:13 AM
Killswitch? KILLSWITCH? Ugh. They should call it "The Instant Classic," now that is one hell of a name for a finisher.
I can not believe Christian left TNA for this crap. Surely Vince pulled the ol' bait and switch with him, this is a joke.
He is out there with a career JTTS (Finlay), a generic Kurt Angle, and the biggest fatass in sports entertainment now that Viscera is gone.
And, to make it worse, he is on ECW, the 3rd show for the WWE. He actually left a program with The Main Event Mafia for this?
Vince had to have lied to him.

I don't care about the name change of his finisher but I agree on the rest of your post. As a big fan of his I had hoped he would be on Raw or Smackdown with a hot feud but instead he is thrown on Ecw a show that while usually the WWE's best show it is treated as the C show by the company and the fans. It seems like as he's gotten more stubborn and hasn't changed his mind from when he told Christian that he only views him as a midcarder back in '05. As a Christian fan I hope things chasnge but I somehow doubt it.
Posted By: graves9 (Guest) on February 18, 2009 at 02:10 AM
Swagger is fairly green but he shows good potential. He has already shown me more than the Godawful Bobby Lashley. That said I highly doubt he'll ever be as good as Angle is.
Posted By: graves9 (Guest) on February 18, 2009 at 02:13 AM
I was talking about Vince when talking of stubborness.
Posted By: graves9 (Guest) on February 18, 2009 at 02:16 AM
nah man, Angle didn't train Swagger, their styles are just similar cause they both use a lot of amateur wrestling do to doing that before pro wrestling. just like Lesnar and Shelton Benjamin also

Only 29 posts after last week's uber love fest? Guess all of those 411 writers were wrong about ECW becoming better than TNA.
This is why you keep things in perspective instead of marking out like a little girl every time and IWC favorite makes an return.
I remember how a lot of people were so psyched about Christian coming back last week and now look. Ask yourselves this question: If Vince really thought that Christian was a main event star, would he really put him on a show that gets the lowest ratings of all three WWE programs?
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Christian fan, and I was upset that he left TNA because I just knew that he would never be a World Title contender in the WWE. Yes, he will have some entertaining feuds with guys like MVP and maybe revisit his old feud with the Hardys should he go to Smackdown but he will always be viewed in Vince's eyes as mid-card talent.
Posted By: Orlando (Guest) on February 18, 2009 at 10:42 AM
TNA World Title is equivalent to WWE Womens Title. That's how relevant it is to be the TNA champion.
Christian is on to better things now.

Dont worry too much about Christian on ECW,because the draft is a few weeks away!!
And why cant they give him his old Christian theme which kicked ass over his new one?

Because that's all he is, retardate. He only got the push in TNA because he was the "biggest" name at the time. Once true stars like Angle and Booker came in, Captain No-Charisma was justifiably pushed off to the side.
Posted By: FEPIC AIL! (Guest) on February 18, 2009 at 01:25 PM
I think given Swaggers title defence on Sunday it was OK for him to be pinned by Christian. Also, I can see Swagger retaining in screwjob fashion next week so it'll all balance out.

On the subject of people bitching about the names of finishers, would rather it stayed the same gay name like Unprettier than Killswitch its an Enguaging name (Pun). Once again though since people bitch about the names of finishers like John Cena's Fireman's Carry Slam I now dub Christian's finisher St. Peter's Cross sincd its upside down and his name is Christian. *pun* But seriously I now dub the name of his finisher since it bugs you call so much the Reserve Double Underhook Face Plant, so their now you can't complain his finisher is back to its real name like John Cena's.

But that's part of the problem the whole even steven booking is why few guys get really truly over by winning feuds that why only guys like Cena, HHH, HBK, Undertaker, and Edge among a few others are where they are.

Not really. He actually had a 4 month title reign in '07 and even pinned Angle at AAO that year. He was only pushed to the background when his contract was winding down and it was clear he was leaving. Hell even then they had a ready made hot feud with the M.E.M on the oft chance that he was staying.

For all you people bashing what is happening with Christian are you kidding me? First of all, Christian has not been on WWE tv for 4 years and with the E going for the younger audience, a lot of the people watching now may have never even heard of him. He is on ECW roster in their main event picture and will be moved up to one of the big 2 as soon as his name is out there for a while, everyone needs to take it easy and one last thing, I watch TNA, and I am sorry, that show is hard to watch. I would watch ECW over that any day, and Christian will be on one of the 2 soon, and ECW is totally worth an hour a week, when Evan "Air" comes back, it will be a great hour a week.
