Jack Swagger battles Christian for the ECW Title in what is simply an Instant Classic!
Welcome to the ECW on Sci-Fi! As always, I am Michael Bauer, your 411 ECW Re-capper.
We open with a quick video package to hype up Christian vs. Jack Swagger for the ECW Title tonight.
Todd Grisham and Matt Striker at ringside after the opening video to again hype the main event.
DJ Gabriel (with Alicia Fox) vs. Mark Henry (with Tony Atlas)
Gabriel starts in the ring and oh boy… who did DJ Gabriel piss off? Alicia looks concerned while Gabriel is trying to not look worried. The bell rings as Striker calls Gabriel the Jonas Brothers. Henry throws down Gabriel before hip tossing Gabriel out of an arm wrench. Gabriel runs off the ropes and tries to take down Henry, but he runs right into the bear splash. Gabriel gets choked in the corner and is whipped across hard, crashing to the mat. Mark clubs DJ down across the chest and applies a giant chinlock. Gabriel gets to his feet and gets shoved into the corner. Gabriel avoids a charge and hits a series of running forearms and a basement dropkick. Gabriel hits a double axe handle from second rope, but gets caught coming off the top rope. Mark Henry twists around Gabriel around and hits the World Strongest Slam for the three count at 3:00.
Winner: Mark Henry
Match Rating: * Decent little match, but it felt like a glorified squash match to give Gabriel his first loss.
We get an Evan Bourne hype video as he is set to return to action soon. I can not wait for that.
Tyson Kidd (with Natalia) vs. Matt Boyce
The bell rings and Tyson gets a go behind with an amateur takedown. Tyson rides Matt until the rope break and then he backs away from Matt. They lock up and again Matt gets to the ropes to break a key lock. Matt gets pissed and lights up Tyson with forearms and gets a sunset flip for two. Tyson hits a stiff kick to the head and follows with a second one flush to the face as he starts to beat up the kid. Tyson grounds Matt with a head scissors and stalks him as he lets him up. Tyson hits a spinning back kick to the jaw and connects with a springboard elbow drop for the three count at 2:10.
Winner: Tyson Kidd
Match Rating: * It might just be me, but these matches aren't getting me too much behind Tyson Kidd.
We return to get a video package of the HHH and Randy Orton situation, including his interview from Smackdown.
Tommy Dreamer vs. Paul Burchill (with Katie Lea)
Tommy Dreamer starts in the ring now, that can't be a good sign. My good god is Katie Lea freaking smoking tonight, like always. The bell rings and Paul backs Tommy into the corner, but Dreamer reverses and punches away on Paul. Paul gets drilled with a side Russian legsweep and is tossed to the outside. Dreamer rolls him back in and hits a neckbreaker, but misses an elbow. Paul stomps away and throws Dreamer into the corner before hitting a clothesline. Dreamer choked in the corner and he gets slammed into the turnbuckle for a near fall. Dreamer avoids the double knees in the corner and hits a swinging neckbreaker followed by an elbow for two. Dreamer runs into a back elbow, but catches Paul coming off the ropes and hits a slingshot into the corner. Dreamer puts Burchill into the Tree of Woe and goes for the basement dropkick, but Katie pulls Paul out of the way. Katie gets pulled down by the legs and the Boogeyman theme pops up as Katie runs away from the Boogeyman as he comes out from under the ring. Burchill is distracted and Dreamer turns him around into the DDT. Dreamer with the cover and the three count at around 4:00! Dreamer wins!!
Winner: Tommy Dreamer
Match Rating: *3/4 Dreamer looks extra motivated and I can't complain, but couldn't he win clean?
Backstage, Christian is walking.
ECW Title Match – Christian vs. Jack Swagger (c)
Christian is getting a huge ovation here. We are getting the super special ring announcer deal tonight for this title match. The bell rings and we still have over 20 minutes of TV time left. Swagger gets the go behind and uses the amateur takedown. Christian to his feet and he counters out, but Swagger just grabs Christian and slams him down to the mat. They lock up again and Christian is backed into the corner, but he reverses and hits a series of right hands. Christian off the ropes, slides under a boot, and hits a spinning heel kick for a two count. Christian with an arm wrench, Swagger lifts up Christian, Christian reverses, but Swagger's strength backs Christian into the corner. Christian avoids a charge from Swagger in the corner, following with a kick to the head using the ropes. Christian charges and decks the champ with a clothesline to the floor. Christian runs off the ropes and springboards to floor onto Swagger!!! Both men are down as we go to commercial at 3:15.
We return to the action at 7:25 as Christian avoids Swagger charging into the corner, but he gets drilled with a forearm. Christian is sent to the floor with a huge shoulder from the ring apron. Swagger goes outside and gets elbowed in the chest, but he dodges Christian charging into him and Christian collides with the steel steps, really nailing his hand. Christian rolls in just in time, but he gets slammed on his injured hand. Swagger with a key lock on Christian, but Swagger slams Christian as he builds momentum. Swagger with a modified arm bar. Christian tries to get to his feet, but he is brought back down. Christian with a headlock reversal, but Swagger lifts him up into a devastating series of a shoulder block, back ram into the turnbuckle, shoulder block, and powerslam. DAMN! We go to another commercial at 11:15.
We return again at 14:55 as Swagger backs Christian into the corner and the hits a modified DDT and locks in reverse front face lock. Swagger is forced to break and Christian hits a huge right hand, but Swagger follows with one of his own. Christian put on the second rope and he fights off Swagger and hits a missile dropkick. Christian hand really looks bad as Christian lights up Swagger with right hands and a drop toe hold. Christian stands on Swagger in the ropes and then snaps his neck along the ropes. Christian heads up top and misses the headbutt. Swagger with a Northern Light Suplex for a two count. Christian reverses the gut wrench powerbomb, but Swagger slips out of the Unprettier. Christian rolls out of a back suplex and hits an inverted DDT for a two count. Swagger reverses and hits a belly to belly suplex for two. Swagger run and tries a second rope bomb, but Christian gets the knees up. Christian with a sunset flip for two. Christian goes back up top, Swagger follows but gets thrown off, and Christian hits the headbutt for two. Christian lifted up for a suplex, but he hits a DDT and gets another two count. Christian's hand is really hurting badly. Christian's shoulder stops him from locking the Unprettier and he gets thrown shoulder first into the post. Christian gets grabbed for the gut wrench, but he slips out and goes for the Unprettier again, but his hand gives way again and this time Swagger hits the gut wrench powerbomb for the three count at 20:45.
Winner: Jack Swagger
Match Rating: ***3/4 This was Christian at his very best and this was by far Swagger's best match of his short career. I don't know if the hand was planned or not, but man did it look like a legit problem. Excellent match and to quote Christian, it was an Instant Classic!
The Main Event kicked ASS..............IMO Christian vs. Swagger can still happen at WM 25 if they wanted and I don't think anyone would complain if they put on a match of ATLEAST this caliber. ONLY AT MANIA CHRISTIAN WINS. :)

Thank you ECW. Over under on Christiann heel turn? I'm guessing it will be against Dreamer in the retirement angle. Heel Christian is good. Very very good.

Hmmm, I don't know what to make of the Cage "comeback"...pretty lackluster so far.
Posted By: FUZEY (Guest) on February 24, 2009 at 10:18 PM
Damn what a main event! The crowd was hot, it was given a lot of time, and the action in the ring delivered. The rest of the show was meh.

Awesome main event! Without the commercials cutting into it, that's probably at least a 4 star match.

Christian gives WWE it's best free tv match in ages.

Christian vs Swagger was a damn good match and should be an early favorite for Match of the Week. And to those who whine and cry like a bunch of fucking babies because Christian lost, I say shut the hell up because it isn't like Christian got squashed in that match.
And of course this would be the problem with some people if they complain about the match.
They say that WWE should start building up young fresh talent. And they do it here by putting Swagger over Christian and some (I am not saying all) people will bitch about Christian jobbing to said young talent.
Sorry this comment it too long, but I hope you people understand what I am trying to say here.
Anyway, kudos to Christian and Swagger on a very good match.

Now I am a Captain Charisma fan, but man o man, Jack SWAGGER is getting better and better!
Why bury Burchill like that, he should be one of the top heels on ECW, he is SO much better than Dreamer, Ortiz, Booeyman, Gabriel, Henry. and as Bauer said, Katie Lee is SSSSSMOKIN!! I want lots more Katie Lee!
Posted By: DCFlash (Guest) on February 24, 2009 at 10:35 PM
The first half of the show was a snoozer but wow was the Main Event fantastic. It had great heat great pyshology and good athleticsm. Christian is one of my favorite as he is just a tremendous in ring general. It is too bad Vince just doesn't believe in the guy. This match blows away the vastly overrated Michaels-Cena matches on Raw and is the early the best match on free tv this year. Swagger is green but boy he has all the topols to be a top guy. I would bet HHH will bury him in 6 months at least.
Posted By: graves9 (Guest) on February 24, 2009 at 10:41 PM
I cant believe how monstrous Jack Swagger was in this match. That shoulder breaker series of moves before the last commercial even had me saying damn! Great psychology on that armwork to! That chancery locked in on the arm really made me believe that arm was dislocated

the main event was the shyt!!!!

watched only the main event. what a great figgin match. could be the show stealer at mania if they don't make it it a 3 or 4 way or some other cluster fuck match
Posted By: ted g (Guest) on February 24, 2009 at 11:09 PM
That main-event was damn good. Christian sold like a fucking champ during the second half of the match. Bravo! We need matches like this to happen more often.

Swagger vs Christian was freaking awesome. Thank goodness I tuned in for the main event of ECW this week.
I really want Christian on RAW or SD but being I gotta say I'm loving tuning in for the main event of ECW and watching him tear it up.

Awesome Main Event!!
Simply Awesome!! Congrats to both men!!

Wow that was a great match by Christian and Swagger... It had all the elements:
1. Scientific wrestling
2. Psychology
3. Some high spots
4. Even chain wrestling
This was a great match... They put on a clinic... I am not a Christian fan but I gotta say WOW it was a PPV quality match that kept me in front of the tube.
On another note, Striker called every manuever and its effect educating wrestling fans like I havent heard in years.
Simply impresive.

its killswitch, i wouldn't have been as bothered by that except every time you wrote unprettier commentary called it the killswitch.

Katie Lea needs to ditch Burchill and manage someone that, you know, actually gets heat from the crowd.

Best two parts of tonights episode:
1. Swagger/Christian
2. calling Tyson Kidd's opponent the 3rd lost Mulkey Brother....I just about died laughing

Excellent championship match. ECW has some great people growing up right before our eyes, and while it makes for good TV now, it may make for great TV in the near future.
My guess is that Christian may get a rubber match against Swagger, but he won't become champion just yet. I'm putting my money on Evan Bourne being immediately entered into a feud with Swagger, possibly en route to Wrestlemania (if WWE doesn't want Bourne for MITB, which they might). Bourne could return from injury with a lot of good heat behind him, and he seems like the best bet for the next ECW champion. There's also a possibility for Christian vs. Bourne down the line, which I would completely mark out for.

Actually.. I'm getting into Tyson Kidd.. and he's being built well as a legit competitor. I could see him falling in with Swagger, Christian, Henry, Finlay, Bourne, Miz, Morrison, and Dreamer here soon as a possible ECW champ. Maybe not by 'Mania.. but not too long after if they keep this going. And "Tyson Kidd" sounds better than "TJ Wilson" for a singles star (and Hart-related prodigy).
Also.. there are three logical ways to go with this now. Christian vs. Swagger at WM (meh), Dreamer vs. Swagger at WM (meh), or an old school style, ECW Three Way Dance with Jack Swagger, Tommy Dreamer, and Christian.. with Swagger out first of course. That would be cool.
Oh.. and I can't wait for Bourne to come back. I could see him as a MITB competitor. Bourne, Punk, Finlay, MVP, Regal, Shelton, Kofi, and R-Truth.. or possibly Tyson Kidd, Mark Henry, Brian Kendrick or Kane. Guess we'll see.

Christian/Swagger - Now THAT is how you have a wrestling match.
Are you paying attention, rest of the WWE?
Posted By: The Taint (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 09:21 AM
I like the ones who tell others to stop bitching about the main event when I haven't seen a single negative comment yet. And for 411mania, that's saying something.
Posted By: ravenite (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 10:55 AM
great psychology that will further the fued, and no it's not a horrible thing for Christian to lose. This was not a burial. Now next week, Christian can come out and talk about how after being gone for 3 years, he came that close to being the ECW champion, and how that only makes him want it that much more; much like the promo Steve Austin cut in the old ECW after debuting and losing to then champ Mikey Whipreck.
Posted By: jojo (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 11:06 AM
I really dug this edition of ECW.
Me thinks the DJ Gabriel experiment may be approaching it's expiry date. From the time he first debuted though, I've always thought he'd be better as a heel. His gimmick is one that could easily work at pissing people off combined with being a little too "pretty". Although, we've heard nothing from him on the mic.
Mark Henry rightfully squashed him as the big man needs to be rebuilt a little as still somewhat of a title threat. I've been waiting for Henry to turn on Jack Swagger. Hasn't happened yet.
Tyson Kidd has started to impress the hell out of me. That springboard elbow drop this week was sweet and came from the bloody rafters! It seems he's using the fact that people think his hairstyle (if you can call it that) is goofy to get under our skin as well now. And even better yet - he's got character. His cocky ways certainly spell out p-r-i-c-k perfectly.
Tommy Dreamer certainly looked rejuvenated and I was happy to see him get back on track. Beautiful DDT on Burchill.
What can I say that hasn't already been said about the main event between Swagger and Christian? Better than anything I've seen as far as RAW and SMACKDOWN main events go recently. I'd take this over Cena/Edge or HHH/Orton any day. Spectacular championship match! I'd even go as far as to say that this bout raised the stock of the ECW silver quite a bit.
Posted By: Devin (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 11:34 AM
@Ravenite -I agree, I see this type of stuff all the time. Users going bipolar and telling everyone to shut up and enjoy the product when there's not a single negative comment around. This isn't the first time it's happen, been happening a bit more lately. They got pills for that people. :)
The Christian/Swagger match was fantastic, loved every minute of it. If this is what our match for the ECW championship is at Wrestlemania, mark me down for one Pay-per-view bill.
Posted By: JcJames (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 11:45 AM
Tyson Kidd needs to get a haircut and a feud before I stop caring.
Posted By: Sanchez (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 12:11 PM
Its called a shoulder breaker not a shoulder block. That was the best Main event ever on ECW.
Posted By: The Anvil (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 12:23 PM
Usually I like to blast small minutiae of matches, but as for the main event of ECW, no problems here. FUCKING AMAZING match with the right guy going over as Swagger had been pinned twice consecutively by Captain Charisma before, and now Christian repays the favor. Christian looked like the best he's ever been in this match, and Swagger brought it like nothing else. I do disagree with the Anvil though about one thing. This was the second-best main event ever on the new ECW. The first remains when CM Punk beat John Morrison for the ECW title. GREAT, great moment. This does not mean I am saying Christian/Swagger was any less awesome. A close third though would be when Big Show wrestled Ric Flair back in 2006 for the title under Extreme Rules.
Posted By: TheEndofAllThings (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 12:42 PM
Though I'm digging the recent work of Tyson Kidd/TJ Wilson, it's not his haircut that bothers me...it's his incessant high-pitched yelling during his matches that gets on my nerves. He sounds like a damn banshee.
Posted By: Nick M. (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 12:45 PM

Posted By: Common Sense (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 02:45 PM
If you look at it, you could take the match in 3 parts.
Part 1: Christian and Swagger feel each other out and Christian takes control.
Part 2: Swagger dominates the veteran Christian which I though built him up nicely.
part 3: the conclusion
It's matches like these that make me PROUD to be a wrestling fan.
Posted By: ZAR1992 (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 03:39 PM
What can I say? A brilliant main-event, which is happening a lot in ECW (Matt Hardy vs Swagger, Fatal Four Way Hardy vs Miz vs Morrison vs Finlay etc). Thought I'd say a few points that I'm not sure anyone else has mentioned:
* How awesome was some of Swagger's moves, especially if him 'hanging on sometimes' i.e. that sick shoulder breaker combo and the neckbreaker, headlock combo.
*Great story in the match - Swagger pulling out all of the tricks in his bag to beat Christian. However as he's relatively new, his bag isn't that full yet, so he often tried to repeat moves (Clothesline to back of the head, splash of the top rope) which Christian, as the veteran, was able to counter. Also that steel post move leading to the finisher is kinda a trademark of Swagger, which Christian reversed. Shows how good both wrestlers are.
*Great selling by Christian. Other wrestlers could learn from this.
*I'm probably insane for thinking this but could Swagger be the next Kurt Angle?!
Also have to say I was impressed with Tyson Kidd. ECW seems to the place for the young hungry talent (Miz & Morrison, Kidd, Evan Bourne, Swagger). TNA should watch sometime...

That was a damn good match, even if the commercials kill the flow of the match for the audience. It told a good story with the announcers actually helping it (Hear that Lawler, Cole?) and Christian doing a damn good job selling that arm. Swagger was once again impressive, especially with his offense on Christian's arm. That sequence of suplexes on Christian's shoulder/arm were great, and so was the modified Northern Lights Suplex. A fantastic match for a TV main event.
All in all a good show which featured some wrestling, instead of being bogged down with highlights or replay packages.
Posted By: Philly Homer (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 06:05 PM
This episode can be summed up in three phrases:
1) Jack Swagger has proved to me that this guy is for real; a relatively new guy (who, by the way, already has a bunch of signature moves I look forward to) hung with one of the best veterans in the biz today and went over in a GREAT manner.
2) Whoever books ECW needs to book RAW. And Smackdown. And PPVs.
3) Matt Striker could call color and play-by-play and be more effective than Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, Tazz, and Todd Grisham put together.
Posted By: CyberFreq (Guest) on February 25, 2009 at 07:51 PM
"Why bury Burchill like that"
So your definition of being "buried" is a wrestler controlling 90% of the match and only loses because he was distracted by an attack on his sister?
To paraphrase Inigo Montoya, I don't think that word means what you think it does.

Some random observations:
- Tyson Kidd will have some smoking matches against better competition.
- Did Katie Lea get a perm or something? Whatever it is, it works.
- Damn, a Masato Tanaka reference!
- Swagger has the MAIN EVENT SHOULDERBREAKER!!~ I replayed that sequence a dozen times. When you rewind for a shoulderbreaker, you know a guy's got some skills.
- As much as I like Matt Hardy, Christian is a reminder of how good Matt isn't. Captain Charisma is a more exciting worker and light years better on the mic.
