ROH debuts on HDNet, and a new era begins…
411's Ring of Honor on HDNet Report 3.21.09
As a reminder, this is the barebones report. I will do play by play and results, that is all. JD Dunn will be back with his breakdown of the show, with the wacky hi-jinks and star ratings.
- Dave Prazak and Mike Hogewood welcome us from the studios, and they discuss the CODE OF HONOR and then hype the main event. I want an ROH polo shirt.
-We get a little in screen "promo" from Delirious, in his special brand of Delirious speak.
-We also get the "1-2-3", which are things that the wrestler is known for.
-Jerry Lynn also gets his little video welcome.
VS. Jerry Lynn vs. Delirious
Crowd is hyped for Lynn as the bell rings. Delirious is bat shit as he rolls around and they lock up. Side headlock by Delirious, off he ropes, shoulder block by Delirious takes Lynn down. Lynn back with a drop toehold and into the bow and arrow, but Delirious escapes and covers for 2. headlock by Lynn, off the ropes and a shoulder block to Delirious. Head scissors by Lynn, tilt a whirl back breaker follows and a cover for 2 by Lynn. Forearms by Lynn follow, to the corner and Delirious catches him and slams him down. Another but Lynn gets a backslide for 2. Lynn gets a spinning deal, like a Gory special into a slam for 2. Delirious with the drop toehold to the corner…PANIC ATACK! Delirious up top…SHADOWS OVER HELL MISSES! TKO by Lynn countered into a sunset flip for 2. Sunset flip spot goes wrong there as Delirious gets 2. Lynn is down, Delirious up top, but Lynn stops that. Rights to Delirious, SUPER RANA by Lynn! TKO FOLLOWS! 1…2…NO! Cradle piledriver stopped by Delirious, shoulder rams in the corner to Lynn and chops follow. Irish whip by Delirious, misses the charge…CRADLE PILEDRIVER by Lynn and that is all.

-We get replays of the opening match.
-Kyle Durden is backstage and interviews Tyler Black. They discuss the break up with Jimmy Jacobs and the fact that they will be in the first main event of ROH on HDNet. Black wants revenge, but he also knows that revenge can damage him. He says the revolution went wrong, and tonight, he takes care of business.
-Callahan says it is always Halloween for him and he will bring the tricks and the treats. Ok.
-Kenny King is happy to be back in the spotlight. He's the pretty boy pitbull.

Callahan locks in the KOJI CLUTCH, King struggles and gets the ropes. Callahan is pissed, corner charge to King, but then misses the kick. CHARGING KNEES by King levels Callahan. CORONATION by King finishes it.
Winner: Kenny King @ 5:40 via pin
-Kyle Durden is backstage with Jimmy Jacobs, who says he brought in Tyler Black, to help him with the movement. They were going to spread Jacobs' message, but Black changed the plans. Black decided to fight for the masses, and while he is great, but he will throw him a bone, just so he can pick it dry. The war is no longer waiting, the war is now.
-22-minutes in we get a short commercial for HDNet programming and ROHWrestling.com.
-We get a history video for Ring of Honor. They feature guys that have been in ROH and are now in WWE or TNA as well as legends and just some cool shit from ROH.

Winner: Brent Albright @ 6:30 via submission
-We get a video package from the Rising Above PPV, and the break up of Black and Jacobs.
VS. Jimmy Jacobs vs. Tyler Black
They circle, lock up and they separate. Jacobs shoves Black, and then gets tossed on his ass. Clubbing shots to the back by Jacobs, headlock, off the ropes and a dropkick by Black. -We get a hype video for next week's show as well as the next PPV on April 17th.
That's all for the debut of ROH on HDNet. Stay tuned for the Tuesday edition of the R's, where I will break down the show.

It was an awesome show Tyler was great
Posted By: chazwwe (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 09:04 PM
I have HDNet and ROH on TV and it was amazing. I can't believe that this is on TV. I haven't felt this excited since I saw iMPACT debut on FSN. If you have HDnet, you need to see this show. There's a repeat in a few hours and even tomorrow. Amazing!!!
Posted By: CesarmaniaX (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 09:08 PM
awesome show more wrestling in an hour than 2 hours of Raw or Impact
Posted By: random (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 09:09 PM
Even though I don't get HDNet, this is truly awesome. I've only been watching ROH for 2 years and finally seeing them on TV is awesome. ROH! ROH! ROH!

Best wrestling I have seen since 1986 on TBS. What a novelty, wrestling shown as a sports show. Major props to ROH and HDNET.
Posted By: Monk (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 09:19 PM
I really enjoyed this. I was unsure of how Hogewood would do, knowing his work with college football, but he was solid.
Posted By: Khali Dingleberry (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 09:21 PM
30 minutes of in-ring action. Not bad.
Posted By: Miles Jackson (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 09:22 PM
All I can say is that was the most painless hour of pro wrestling I've ever watched on TV. I didn't wince once because something was stupid or ridiculous. The production values were AWESOME for ROH. It looked tremendous in HD. I do think the crowd was mic'd wrong or something because I couldn't hear them very well, even when I could tell they were chanting something.
I wasn't really big on the "Smacktalk" segments either. I get why they were there, to introduce everyone to the talent, but Sami Callahan really doesn't need a promo at this point (his match was great though, way better than I expected). They were only 10-15 seconds each, so that's fine, but if they're still doing it 2-3 months from now it might be a problem.
Great show, great wrestling, and a must see for anyone who's complaining about the big 2 right now.
Posted By: The REAL MP (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 09:24 PM
Oh yeah, and Hogewood? He was fine. No big problems. He seemed a little over-excited at times, but it didn't really come as forced or unnatural (just kind of annoying). He never overstepped his bounds and let Prazak do all the talking about background and what not. Prazak was reined in too, and never did any heel stuff (did he?).
Posted By: The REAL MP (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 09:26 PM
Looks like an okay show.
A handful of wrestlers were given the chance to introduce themselves, ROh delivered it's wrestling, and they actually have a basic framework for advance a storyline on TV.
Should be a good show to watch.

What the hell are you talking about? Adam Pearce is the booker and he wasn't on the show. Moron.
Posted By: Guest#0817 (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 09:32 PM
I give props to everyone who's left a comment (so far) for understanding that good wrestling doesn't need 45 minutes of smack talking nor to be in front of 20,000 people for it to be enetertaining and well executed.
Posted By: Flying Dutchman (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 09:43 PM
Awesome to see ROH finally get a weekly show, in HD no less.
The show was great, I can't wait till next week, and the next one, and the next one, and the...
Posted By: Guinness (Registered) on March 21, 2009 at 09:58 PM
So by that logic, Pearce should never win a match in ROH again? Hmm.
Posted By: Steve307 (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 10:00 PM
Jimmy Jacobs reminds me of Charlie from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."
Posted By: Kip (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 10:43 PM
I do not have HDNET nor have kept up on ROH since the legends left roh but good to see them on TV
Posted By: Guest#5921 (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 10:45 PM
Wow, this is the first time I've ever seen any of these ROH people...
... by looking at the pictures of them in this report!
Posted By: BBM (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 10:46 PM
I was at these first 6 episodes.. and I will say for the most part non-epic... BBBBBUUUTTTTTTT!!! It shouldn't be epic quite yet, it's like buying your girlfriend a diamond ring and 2 dozens roses on your first valentines day, whats next??
I will say that I am so excited that 5 days a week my dvr is recording wrestling!!! Now that is EPIC!!
First row, Nigel shirt.. "Yes! There I am, look mah I'm on HD Net! Thanks Mark Cuban."
ROH, ROH, ROH, ROH, ROH, ROH, ROH!!!!!!
Posted By: fallenhardforROH (Registered) on March 21, 2009 at 10:51 PM
I enjoyed it for what it was, like someone said above me that I hope after a few months down the road they stop using the 'smack talk' part of the show. Either way it looked great on HD and I can't wait to see next week's show.
Posted By: Zeus (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 11:24 PM
"I want an ROH polo shirt".
Possibly the most pathetic remark I've ever seen.
Posted By: Funny Games (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 11:33 PM
I can't watch ROH because of the ring...it bounces too much and give the appearance of a backyard fed on a trampoline.
That is NOT a commentary on the wrestlers or their talent, just on how it comes across.

You are 100% RIGHT!!!!!!!!!
BUT,
If it doesn't, it gets on a crappy network no one gets and doesn't draw a dime in all of it's existence, & gives IWC fanboys boners in their mom's basement!
Posted By: Guest#6748 (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 11:45 PM
Soooooooooo Csonka, for this we get pictures of each wrestler but for WWE or TNA we don't?
Well, looks like 411 is biased - someone please start a 422 site that isn't!
Posted By: Guest#2150 (Guest) on March 21, 2009 at 11:47 PM
FUCK YEAH! This show was awesome! FUCK YOU TNA JUST FUCK YOU! After seeing this I honestly hope TNA dies and this takes its spot
Posted By: natedoggcata (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 12:13 AM
Actually "Guest#2150", I added the pics because people always say that they have no clue who the ROH Wrestlers are. Nice try though.

It was weird to not hear a shitload of canned crowd noise.
I actually liked the 1,2,3 since I really don't know the guys and it was a good way to learn about them. I do agree if they put the same thing up there on a guys 17th appearance on HDNet that would be stupid.
Cameras need to be back from the ring just a bit as sometimes it made for awkward TV. Small ring is going to take some time to get used to.
I will DVR again next week.

Are all of you people marking out for this show new to ROH or something?
This was not the ROH that I used to know. Not at all. Everything was just blah to me, completely average with none of the ROH atmosphere that I used to love. This felt like something not ROH especially with the presentation and the commentary had a lot to do with that. Also, the crowd was horrible especially with the shots of the kids in the crowd (ROH is for older teens and adults). Just having a show with 30 minutes of wrestling doesn't make it good or exciting either. ECW has had better shows than this. Swagger vs. Christian from a couple of weeks ago easily topped everything on this show.
Jimmy Jacobs vs Tyler Black should have been presented as a big deal and the match should have been full of hatred/energy/drama. It wasn't.
Posted By: Anonymous (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 02:00 AM
Sounds like a good debut. Can't get HDNet currently but glad to hear that it went well for RoH, god knows WWE and TNA aint getting it done when it comes to the product quality so if RoH & HDNet can work together to expand the company and the network it's all good (just dont expect big ratings out of the gate)
Posted By: Guest#9683 (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 02:28 AM
Overall, it was great, but a few complaints:
The camera work was HORRIBLE. The picture is clear and all, but the framing, et al, was pretty pathetic. Half the time, it was like watching the show from a REALLY awkward angle -- something I don't really see when I watch the ROH DVDs. I'm hoping this is just a temporary problem.
Delirious was a horrible wrestler for the first match. He wasn't bad from a quality standpoint (I actually like his schtick), but for a new watcher, I'm sure their reaction would be "what the hell is this crap?"
I can't say that saying "This is a different type of company. The wrestlers need to shake hands before and after matches." is exactly the most dynamic way to make your company seem exciting.
All told, of course I'll watch more.
Guess we'll have to wait and see how this works out for ROH, though. I hope it works out well, and TNA can see that you CAN have a quality product without using WWE as your template.

As a "virgin" to ROH, here are my thoughts:
1. Good wrestling and plenty of it. However, I would like the guys to take it up a notch and add a little psychology.
2. Music. Everyone doesn't need to have death metal. The right music enhances the entrance, the character and instant fan pop.
3. I love the 3 facts. Although i'm tired of companies changing moves to suit the gimmick. Call the f'n move what it is.
4. Kenny King and Tyler Black...these two dudes will be in the WWE within 2 years. I was very impressed by both of them and if Vince has half a brain he should sign them although i'm sure he'll screw them up.
Can't wait 'til next week.

We get it man...you've watch it for a minute and a lot of the people that LIKED the show are newbies and you're so cool because you were on to it before anyone else... OK... thats fine..
I've been to a few ROH shows live and they've ALWAYS had kids in the crowd with a full bar with hard liquor right by the ring, so you saying no kids go to the shows isn't correct.
The wrestling on this show was great, but stop trying to pretend as though ALL of ROH's previous matches are 4 and 5 star classics by comparing the matches on this show to Christian vs Swagger on ECW.... who the fuck cares, it was a solid show that delivered good wrestling....
I had an over under on how long it would take for ROH fans to bitch and moan about the product when they got on a national television.......
Posted By: Industry (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 04:39 AM
ROH being compared to TNA on fox sports and WCW on TBS yeah they're screwed.
Posted By: Guest#1777 (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 05:59 AM
The show was terrible, no crowd reaction at all! I don't think WWE or TNA have anything to worry about.
Posted By: BPayne (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 07:46 AM
boring show,no entertainment i wonder why people over here love this boring roh and hate tna,tna is much better than wwe,wwe is for small kids who believe wrestling is real ,get a life tna haters, roh sucks.
Posted By: amit (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 10:32 AM
ROH! Glad to see ROH on tv and in HD. The little intro vids are cool for noobs who dont know the guys and we got more wrestling in 3 matches than an average episode of TNA.
Posted By: Guest#7797 (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 10:45 AM
Well, let's see if I can save somebody the trouble of reviewing this show.
Every match was *****1/2.
If Triple H and Chris Jericho could cut promos like Ring of Honor guys, WWE's ratings wouldn't be down.
If TNA would be more like Ring of Honor, their ratings would be higher.
Tyler Black should headline Wrestlemania against John Cena so everybody can see what a REAL wrestler is like.
Within four months of debuting on HD Net, Ring of Honor will have a prime time deal on CBS, replacing CSI on the programming schedule and scoring an average rating of 13.4. They will move out of high school gyms and begin holding cards in a sold out Rose Bowl before moving to Central Park where they can draw millions of fans. TNA, WWE, UFC, Boxing, and the Lifetime Network will be out of business by October.
Either that, or they'll stay in high school gyms in front of 100 people on a barely watched network.
We'll see.

IF ROH GETS A SECOND HOUR, THEY WILL BEAT DIXIE CARTER AND VINCE MCMAHON!!!
...Right, TNA?
All that said, this was a solid start and I'm legitimately looking forward to more of this and the road to Wrestlemania.
Posted By: Banz (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 11:45 AM
"so you saying no kids go to the shows isn't correct."
Actually, read my comment again. I never said that. The camera focused on the kids at one point. Most of their audience is older teen and adult, not little kids although of course some go to the shows as well.
"by comparing the matches on this show to Christian vs Swagger on ECW"
Seems like a fair enough comparison to me.

I wish I had HDNet. =[

XD! I've heard some REALLY stupid shit people say against ROH, but that has too top the list. OMG THE RINGS TOO BOUNCY! What do you expect, all wrestling rings bounce. If they didn't the wrestlers would get hurt more than they already do.
Posted By: Whoblehwah (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 01:30 PM
I never get the sarcastic "OMG Vince must be so worried!" comments. Do you guys really think ROH is setting out to top RAW in the ratings or something? They're just trying to be a profitable company. So the "shaking in their boots" comments are just pretty stupid.
Posted By: Guest#6146 (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 01:48 PM
This was my first time with ROH. I'm glad they were gentle.
At least what crowd noise we heard was REAL noise and not the piped in fake shit WWE/TNA use to make you think the fans are going ape-shit over a 3 minute match.
I will also take a quick interview or a 10 second "Get out or Tap Out" over Main Event ANGLES????
Posted By: Crowd Noise (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 05:22 PM
Saw RoH for the first time on HDNet. The show was OK. Two complaints though. Mike Hogewood is the worst wrestling play-by-play guy I have ever heard & Why does everybody have crazy metal entrance music?
I will give it another shot next week. Ohh yeah & those camera angles bother the hell outta me.
Posted By: Gus (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 05:47 PM
My only major complaint is that the crowd noice was dampened to the point of irrelevance, but at least that is something they can work on in future episodes
Posted By: TAT (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 08:38 PM
It was alright, but didn't really feel like ROH. I hope that people watching the ROH for the first time understand that this isn't exactly representative on the true ring of honor, and perhaps decide to pick up a past dvd to see what made this company so incredible.
Posted By: Joel (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 09:27 PM
This is the first time I've seen ROH. I caught a few minutes of it, but didn't see much. What I took away from it is this, The production value looks way better than TNA. They actually wrestle. If they ever get to a channel that everyone has, they can easily pass up TNA in the pecking order. Will it seriously overtake WWE? It's possible, but that won't be for a long while.
Posted By: Booker T (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 09:49 PM
Damn... it took WWE over two decades to broadcast in HD.. and ROH broadcasts in HD on their debut.

WWE had their shot at Kenny King, as he was a finalist in the second Tough Enough. But no, they picked Linda "I don't like wrestling" Miles and Jackie "stay-at-home mom" Gayda. Good call, WWE.

Because according to Vince McMahon and Triple H, one more of -
VINCE: "the Soul Brothers"
TRIPLE H: "Those kind"
- means a ghetto in the locker room.
