Apparently, they're making the Code of Honor the focal point again. I approve.
Jerry Lynn vs. Delirious.
Neat production stuff tells us who these guys are, weaknesses, signature moves, and turn-ons. Hogewood does not exactly endear himself to me as he's already relying on signature banalities. After a Delirious shoulderblock: That hurt Lynn! Another thing I like is that they're going back to some of the things they started with like Delirious going crazy at the bell, which is something that the crowd used to love but has receded into the background after he turned heel. Lynn gets his signature tilt-o-whirl headscissors and backbreaker. He hits a Gory Special, but Delirious comes back with a drop toehold in the corner and the PANIC ATTACK (called by Hogewood, so at least he's putting forth effort). Shadows Over Hell misses. The TKO is countered, and Delirious goes up. Lynn catches him, though, and hits a top rope huracanrana. TKO! ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! Lynn goes for a Cradle Piledriver, but Delirious rams him into the corner. Delirious misses a charge, though, and Lynn is able to hit the Cradle Piledriver at 5:44. Lynn looked solid again, and it was probably a good idea to lead off with him since he's probably got the most name cache of anyone in the company thanks to his ECW Title reign and tenure in WWE and TNA. **1/4
Kyle Durden gets a word with Tyler Black. Black wants some revenge on Jimmy Jacobs tonight because Jimmy lost the mission and double-crossed him.
Kenny King vs. Sami Callihan.
If Shelton Benjamin never existed, King would be on Smackdown right now. King displays his cockiness and athleticism in the first thirty seconds, so job well done there. King snaps Callihan's neck on the top rope á la Randy Savage. Back in, King hits the handstand kick and a vicious spinebuster. Callihan comes back with an atomic drop and a T-bone. DOWN COME THE STRAPS! Callihan hits a snap Stunner a seated clothesline for two. KOJI CLUTCH! King makes the ropes, though. Callihan misses a wild charge and takes a hard double-knee shot to the back (think Elijah Express only farther away from the corner). The Coronation finishes Callihan at 5:40. King has huge star potential if they can bring him along. He tends to rely on set pieces, though, instead of just letting the match unfold, and this match demonstrated that. Still not sure what to think about Callihan. He's definitely not a bad wrestler, but he doesn't wow me either -- kind of like Cody Rhodes. *3/4
Jimmy Jacobs, probably ROH's best promo guy, derides Black for deciding to fight for the masses. That's a bit of revisionist history as it was Jacobs who turned on Black for screwing up, not because Black had any kind of revelation.
Sidebar: the crowd is uncharacteristically dead. It could be that production toned down their sound. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn't have the atmosphere that makes a lot of ROH shows so great.
Brent Albright vs. Rhett Titus.
Titus is the most likely to break out with new viewers thanks to his gimmick and personality. Hopefully, they actually let Titus and King get over as a tag team. They have the potential to be the Miz and Morrison of ROH. This, on the other hand, starts out as a squash by Albright. He hits Splash Mountain on Titus, which is a bit of a mistake because Titus' finisher is so similar. Titus gets tossed, and Albright follows with a pescado. Titus rakes the eyes to come back and tosses Albright to the corner. Albright fights back, but Titus goes back to the eyes. More eye-rakery and a chinlock. Titus fights like a girl. I approve. Albright escapes the chinlock and hulks up. A leg lariat and clothesline put Titus down, and he runs right into a dropkick. Albright hits an Exploder and a uranage. That sets up the Half-Nelson Suplex to knock Titus silly. The Crowbar gets the submission at 6:29. **
Recap of the Jacobs/Black feud. Note the copious amount of blood right there on your TV show. No black and white. No pulling back to a long shot.
Jimmy Jacobs vs. Tyler Black.
Jimmy makes the mistake of trying to shove Black and gets knocked on his ass. Black hits a dropkick and sends Jimmy to the floor. They brawl on the floor, and Jimmy scurries off. Jimmy tosses in a few chairs and Pearl Harbors Black as he's trying to clear them away. Jimmy puts the boots to him, but Black catches him with an atomic drop. Jacobs headscissors him and drops an old-school elbow. Black clotheslines him and goes up, but Jimmy pops up and knocks Black to the floor. Jimmy sets Tyler in a chair, but the ref breaks up any further violence. Jimmy jumps Tyler on the way back in and puts the boots to him again. Jacobs hits a spear, but a second try is blocked. Jabs by Black, and he hits a press slam. Black hits a running forearm. SPRINGBOARD LARIAT BY BLACK! A standing SSP gets two. THE PHOENIX SPLASH… misses. Black rolls through but gets speared by Jacobs. Clubs to the back, but Black hits the Pélé. Jacobs takes it to the floor and hits a plancha. Back in again, Jacobs' senton finds the knees. God's Last Gift is countered to the END TIME! Black powers him to the corner and throws him off. A superkick misses, but Tyler gets a rollup for two. Jimmy jumps him with the END TIME again. Tyler fades and nearly gets choked out, but he rolls Jimmy over onto his shoulders to get the pin at 13:58. A lot more low-tech and low-energy than what you'd see on a DVD or PPV, but that's actually to its benefit on TV. Tyler looked strong and talented, like the future of the promotion should. Jimmy, on the other hand, didn't look bad at all in the loss, using treachery and intelligence to stay on top before losing in a somewhat flukish fashion. Good TV main event to kick off the TV era. ***
The 411: A good start for the promotion on TV. Not really representative of what ROH has been over the years, but more of a hybrid between ROH's in-ring action and the WWE B-shows. In fact, it felt a lot like the early episodes of Raw. Hopefully, they'll incorporate more angles since this is supposed to be the advertisement for ROH DVDs and PPV. Some things still need ironed out. Hogewood takes some getting used to. He sounds like someone spliced together Jim Ross and Rod Trongard's DNA. He's not bad, but he sound very old school. All in all, a successful first foray into TV for the promotion with some room for improvement.
Hogewood was better than Adamle, Cole, Grisham or Coach and WAY better than Don West.

Yeah I have a beef with the crowd mics. If I know anything about Philadelphia and indy wrestling, it's that their LIVE.
Other than that, the production was fantastic.
Posted By: The REAL MP (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 12:34 AM
I was at that taping, and it wasn't the hottest Philly crowd ROH has ever had. Part of the problem was that they didn't recognize the new entrance music and never knew who was coming out to react to. The other part, and I've said this before, was the formulaic, paced matches. ROH crowds aren't accustomed to that. They didn't start warming up until the second hour when Danielson had his match.

You mean ripping off ECW crowds? Like seriously the entire ROH fanbase is a complete rip off of the old ECW. No originality whatsoever. whatever makes the marks happy I guess.....
RIP ROH

i thought the same thing about Kenny King when I saw him. 'Shelton Benjamin 2.o'. Anyhow, this was good for me as I live in a part of the country where ROH doesn't go, so my only exposure is the PPV's and the 'net. Not too sure about Hodgewood, only because I'm used to Lenny. Oh well...

The Kenny King match was much better than a damn 1 and what ever you gave it, man, but lately, a lot of the match rating on this site have been utter shit.
Posted By: Industry (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 04:22 AM
Viewed as an introduction to ROH, and the obvious differences to current WWE/TNA products are there:
the ring is a trampoline, the ropes are really loose, the backstage segments looked like they were done in a corner of a warehouse full of crap. The crowd was oddly quiet, they did know that this was a TV taping ? The arena was lit really dark, not sure about that.
The talent displayed was good, they are obviously allowed more freedom when it comes to movesets, and the energy was good throughout. Did someone call himself the New Whore?
The commentary sounded really postproduced, if that makes sense.
Overall, ok.

How successful are they going to be trying to 'build' characters such as King and Black if viewers have to wait a month to see them on TV again? Seems rather backwards ass in todays televised market; admirably old-school mind you, but still backwards ass.

New drinking game - everytime Hogewood says "that hurt"...
Posted By: AustinBrian (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 11:01 AM
Not knowing that Mike Hogewood was going to be the 'ROH on HDNet' color commentator and seeing him on the show was so odd to me at first since he's well known here in North Carolina as the guy who does commercials for local Kia dealerships and does half time report shows for alot of our local ACC college games.

I thought the show looked really quite good. The matches were quick but more solid and with a wider variety of moves than you see in TNA or WWE. I think it was mostly successful in showing how ROH was something different than the other two.
I thought the camera work was actually a bit better than the other two. I can't tell you how many times there have been moments of great action in WWE or TNA that have been missed or partially caught by the cameramen. I liked how they were experimenting with closeups to get expressions.
Hogewood was better than expected, but he only seemed to know finishing moves. Everything else was vintage McMahon announcing..."Ooo, that hurt!"
Overall, I'd say this is a good way to make the product look different and interesting while keeping a lot of surprises for people who follow through and get the DVDs. It may not be vintage ROH, but it's a solid framework that can let them go places once they've figured out what they're doing.

Everyone seems to expect the Philly crowd to be really loud, but every time I have been to an ROH show at Philly the crowd is kinda lifeless compared to other places except for big matches like when we had the Nigel vs. Dragon SURPRISE match.

alcoholic.... you cant talk shit on coach... hes a sportscenter host... which is every male communications major ultimate goal... the coach has made it, ROH needs him!!!

where's Lenny Leonard?
The show looks great (production wise) other than that pretty flat debut show...None of the "key" talent were used...
Wonder about the rating this show and how the ROHbots will defend it :)

Blind hatred for anything not ROH...he sounds average. A bit better than Adamle since he didn't botch any important names. A little worse than Don West right now since he doesn't add much to telling the story in the ring i.m.o. and he gets audibly loud for no reason.
But, given some time, he can be a good announcer. Idk if his excitement gels well with Prazaks calmness. We'll have to see.

since the forums seem to not work for me right now, might as well use this comment thing to say that this was good. Not amazing, didn't care for the promos (Jimmy Jacobs is ok I guess!) and I prefer WWE's more "sports entertainment/pg attitude era" idea of wrestling but it was fun. And the main event was great (and it was about pretty much the only feud I knew about before so that helps).

Calling Kenny King Shelton 2.0 isn't really fair. King is MAYBE a notch below him in athleticism (and even that might be a stretch) but the guy has ridiculous charisma.
Posted By: Flying Dutchman (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 07:04 PM
Kenny King really did come off as a future superstar..the guy has the "it" factor...the only thing i didnt like about the show is the audience reactions seemed like it was toned down volume wise...the look of the show was top knotch...
Da Crown Jewel, JIMMY RAVE!!! and Prince Nana are back..Long Live da Em-Ba-Cee...RIP Sweet N Sour...

Ok, whiny monkey-pricks...What's the big deal with not being able to stand people having other opinions? Too hard for you to fathom that people like actual wrestling as opposed to what the big brands are delivering? Is it so hard to understand?
Didn't think so. The only plausible answer is the worst one, you...that is you who keep deriding RoH, TNA and WWE fans are simply, no life trolls. Go out some time, have a beer when you reach the age to buy beer and talk to people in real life...you know that life other people then you are having. Get away from your computer and realize that RoH, TNA and WWE fans aren't the reason you are miserable.
In short, kindly GROW UP!

For a first show, it was pretty good.
The production values are excellent (though I still hate that the ring ropes aren't perfectly straight), I liked that they did a recap of the history between Jacobs and Black, and with a bit of time I think Hogewood will settle into his role.
I'm happy for the first sort of 'half-season' of ROH on HDNet to be about getting the roster some exposure, and I'd be happy to see a tag match every once in a while, too.
Overall I'd give it about a 6/10, which was better than I was expecting for a first show, and probably puts it on par with a slow week of Raw or Smackdown.

Kenny King = Shelton Benjamin 2.0???
Why, cus he's BLLLACK!?!?
Posted By: Affirmative Asks... (Guest) on March 22, 2009 at 08:45 PM
I enjoyed it. I didn't like the new play by play guy at all. It really did seem like Vince McMahon's vacant style at times, only worse. Not Adamle bad and not high strung like Don West either, but he didn't add anything to the matches and was distracting with his "That hurt!" line and then his RANDOMLY loud LINES!
Also yeah they need to sort the crowd mics out so we can hear them properly. A few more lights on them wouldn't go amiss either.
The wrestlers all did their part though and the main event was very good as expected. Jimmy Jacobs is god. His promo was great, though I think they should film them somewhere else, perhaps against a 'ROH' board or something.
The other matches were decent and I was really impressed with King and the Shelton comparisons are very apt. I don't want to compare him to another black wrestler but he reminded me of Shelton's wrestling ability with Primetime Elix Skipper's cockiness. Outside of Lynn, Jacobs, Black and Delirious I didn't know the rest of the wrestlers on the card so I liked he quick interviews with them all too.
All in all a good show and if I can find the next one online again I'll be watching next week.

This was a good alternative to TNA and WWE. The wrestling in the 3 undercard matches was spotty but good. They seemed to be going for spotfests so everyone could show off their movesets and that was fine.
The main event was a good solid match but I just didn't feel the hatred between Jacobs and Black. Jacobs played his heel role well and Black showed he has great potential.

to say this was the first show, I was pleased with what I saw. This was my first time even watching roh so i'm just getting used to these wrestlers but as with tna, it took me a little time to adjust and I think the same will happen here. These guys look like great wrestlers and I'll enjoy getting used to wrestlers I've never seen. As for as production, which isn't that big of a deal to me, I didn't expect much at all because it is there first show, but I see nothing horribly bad about the production for the first show. Hopefully they'll improve and we'll get to have three major promotions around like before.
Posted By: cj (Guest) on March 23, 2009 at 03:18 PM
I am going to guess that their will be improvement in the shows from this one to the next. Also, when they do their 2nd or 3rd set of tapings, I would expect a big jump in quality as they should have time to take the feedback and make changes where they need to.
I would like more crowd noise, but only if it is REAL crowd noise.
