The Name on the Marquee: WWF Wrestling Challenge - February 1987
Posted by Adam Nedeff on 06.14.2009

-Time to look at another big month of action as we continue building steam toward the big one…Here’s “WWF Wrestling Challenge” for February, 1987…

Originally aired February 1, 1987.

-We’re in Hershey, PA.

-Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan, and Johnny V.

KOKO B. WARE vs. KING HARLEY RACE (with Bobby Heenan)
-This is the second week where Harley has been billed as “The King”, with no acknowledgment of his name. Mel Phillips notes that The King is escorted to the ring by his manager, then forgets Bobby’s name. Your referee is Danny Davis, so blah blah blah blah doesn’t matter doesn’t matter blah blah blah Bobby Heenan knocks Koko off the top rope and Davis gives him a fast three count. Harley goes home with the win.

-Junkyard Dog angrily comes to the ring to check on Koko and Davis reprimands him for showing up. JYD loses it and hiptosses Davis across the ring. The crowd gives a standing ovation.

-Outback Jack is at the Sydney Opera House. He invites Hulk and JYD to come down for a visit.

HERCULES (with Bobby Heenan) vs. DON DRIGGERS
-Hulk Hogan drops in to put over Hercules as the ultimate test and a man who can push you to the limit. Hercules suplexes Driggers and finishes with a full nelson.

-Billy Jack Haynes shows up, and Bobby Heenan ties the chain around Hercules’ neck to restrain him. Hercules leaves ringside without incident.

-Ken Resnick talks to George Steele, who is angry about getting hurt by Randy Savage. He promises to hurt Savage and take Elizabeth.

BILLY JACK HAYNES vs. JIMMY JACK FUNK
-Haynes shoves Funk into the ropes, but Funk retaliates and drags Haynes’ eyes across the top rope. Haynes reverses an Irish whip and clotheslines Funk. Series of punches and chops as Hercules & Bobby Heenan return to ringside to watch the bout. Press slam and a suplex by Haynes get a two-count. Atomic drop by Haynes, and he finishes with the full nelson. Heenan & Hercules are unimpressed.

-Ken Resnick talks to Colonel Jimmy Hart & Honky Tonk Man. Honky Tonk Man calls Hulk Hogan a backstabber because Jimmy did some research and found out that Hulk voted “Nay” in the Vote of Confidence.

-The Can-Am Connection show up at the locker room and watch each other change into their wrestling gear as they talk about all of the places where they’ve gone out to dinner together. This segment is like...it's like the gender opposite of the scene in a Cinemax movie where they do plot exposition.

ADRIAN ADONIS & HART FOUNDATION (with Jimmy Hart) vs. JIM PARKS, PAUL ROMA, & TONY GAREA
-Adonis & Garea start. Adrian pounds him down and tags in Hart for an attempted double-team, but Garea ducks and Adonis takes a dropkick. Hart, undaunted, gives Garea a backbreaker but misses an elbowdrop. Roma tags in and applies an arm wringer and Parks tags in to work the arm. Hart fights free and drops a few elbows on him. Anvil comes in and slams Parks down. Adonis comes off the top rope with a forearm and finishes Parks with Goodnight Irene.

PIPER’S PIT
-From “Superstars of Wrestling” the same weekend. Roddy has the trophies from both ceremonies and brings out Jesse Ventura. Jesse recaps the entire Andre the Giant reinstatement controversy. We move on to Jesse comparing the trophies from the ceremony, saying that Hulk’s huge trophy feels like gold, but Andre’s smaller trophy is made of lead. Piper basically tells him he’s full of crap and they tease getting into a brawl before Jesse makes a deal with Piper. He’ll bring Andre to the Pit next week if Piper brings Hulk.

-We go to Danny Davis, who looks like he just finished taking a shower with his clothes on for some reason. He demands that JYD be fined and suspended.

JAKE “The Snake” ROBERTS vs. GARY STARR
-Face pop for Roberts, but he still hasn’t turned yet. Jake pounds Starr down and hits the DDT immediately for the win.

-Jimmy Hart & Honky Tonk Man visit Graceland. It’s a nice house, but it’s not quite big enough for Honky and some of the paint is chipped. He promises to build a new mansion and call it Honkyland, which I believe was the original name for The Gap.

ISLANDERS vs. NIKOLAI VOLKOFF & IRON SHEIK (with Slick)
-Islanders’ entrance theme interrupts the Soviet anthem. Volkoff & Haku start. Haku rolls up Volkoff quickly for two. Atomic drop and a double-headbutt by the Islanders as Bobby & Gorilla speculate on Wrestlemania III’s location and card. Tama gets double-teamed and Sheik elbows him down. Suplex is blocked and reversed by Tama. Haku comes in with a dropkick and a slam. Splash off the top rope by Tama looks to finish, but a brawl erupts and Slick sneaks in with a cane shot to KO Tama, and Volkoff & Sheik take the win.

-Ken Resnick talks to Ricky Steamboat. He’s going to burn Randy Savage with his fire. George Steele returns to grunt and growl a little more.

-Gorilla Monsoon talks to Andre the Giant, who promises to meet Hulk Hogan at Piper’s Pit. Let’s see if he’s a man of his word…

Originally aired February 8, 1987.

-We’re in Ft. Myers, FL.

-Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby Heenan.

KOKO B. WARE vs. JIMMY JACK FUNK
-Lock-up and Koko no-sells a punch, then drops Funk with one of his own. Pair of hiptosses compels Funk to go to the floor for a moment. Back in, he tries an arm wringer, but Koko reverses it and drops the leg. Here’s Slick to let us know that he can’t stand people like Koko who brag about themselves and wear fancy clothes.

-Koko Irish whips Funk and backdrops him. Funk wants a test of strength and gets the upper hand as Bobby Heenan announces that according to his reliable sources, Wrestlemania III will be at MSG. He must have read that on the internet. Koko dropkicks out of the test of strength. Missile dropkick and the brainbuster give Koko the win.

-Craig DeGeorge talks to Jack Tunney, who announces that Wrestlemania III will be held at the Pontiac Silverdome. Vince McMahon drops in to let us know that Wrestlemania III will be “Bigger…better….BAADDEERR.”

TAG TEAM TITLE: BRITISH BULLDOGS (Champions, with Matilda) vs. HART FOUNDATION (with Jimmy Hart)
-From the previous day’s “WWF Superstars of Wrestling” at the Sun Dome. The action picks up with Davey Boy stepping into the ring, editing out the Bulldogs’ entrance because Dynamite Kid was so badly injured at this point that his partner had to piggy-back him to ringside. Danny Davis is the referee for this one, and yes, that’s going to be important.

-Davey Boy and Matilda clear the ring and chase the Harts around the ring. Meanwhile, Jimmy Hart sneaks up behind Dynamite and KOs him with the megaphone. Back in the ring, Davey Boy is having absolutely no trouble beating the crap out of both Harts. Davis isn’t even in the ring; he’s outside yelling at Dynamite for just laying around being unconscious.

-Davey Boy is still handling the Harts, Irish whipping Anvil into Bret and dropkicking Bret out to the floor. Running powerslam by Davey Boy, but Davis ducks out to reprimand Dynamite again. Davey Boy gets fed up and pulls Davis into the ring by his hair, but that gives Bret a chance to sneak up from behind and attack, and the Harts double-team Davey Boy while Danny Davis goes back to giving Dynamite his stern lecture. Hart Attack on Davey Boy, and Davis hauls ass back into the ring and gives a fast three-count to give the Harts the tag team titles. Davis leaves with the Harts post-match.

-Mean Gene Okerlund talks to Thhhheeeeeeeee Wizzaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrddd, who brings in Kamala & Sika. Wizard congratulates the Harts, but warns them that this is the tag team to be reckoned with. I guess this means we’ve seen the end of Ken Resnick. I’m sorry he didn’t stick around; he did a really good job of selling the emotion for various angles.

-Outback Jack walks through Sydney and heads to the airport, where he sees an automated door for the first time and freaks out a little bit. He’s hopping onto a Qantas jet to cross the Pacific and coming to the WWF.

JAKE “The Snake” ROBERTS vs. DAVID GOLD
-Standing ovation for Jake as the Honky Tonk Man drops in to tell us that he doesn’t like snakes unless they’re providing seat covers for his new car. The turn is nearly complete. Jake takes care of Gold in short order and the DDT finishes.

-Gene Okerlund chats with the Man with Oregon on His Ass, Billy Jack Haynes. He wants Hercules!

-Ricky Steamboat visits the Kennedy Institute for Handicapped Children...Children, where he talks about losing his voice and not being able to tell jokes or stories. I am utterly incapable of picturing Ricky Steamboat telling jokes.

DEMOLITION (with Johnny V) vs. SPECIAL DELIVERY JONES & DON DRIGGERS
-Smash is still Moondog Rex, this time with a buzzcut to try and make his identity less obvious. Smash trades fists with Jones and slams him down. The Dream Team drops in to say that they have no problem with Johnny V managing two tag teams at once.

-Ax pounds Driggers and rams him into Smash’s boot. Smash comes in and drops Driggers throat-first over the top rope. Polish hammer by Smash and he slingshots Driggers into Ax for a clothesline, that’s all she wrote. Bobby Heenan suddenly announces, “I’ll be right back” as we move onto…

PIPER’S PIT
-Piper & Jesse Ventura are out there to start. Piper holds up his end of the deal and brings out Hulk Hogan. Jesse introduces Andre the Giant, and Andre comes out…with Bobby Heenan. Hulk asks him why he’s with Heenan and Andre won’t talk to him. Bobby Heenan jumps in to say he’s sick of Hogan and the way he used Andre for personal gain, then takes him to task for stealing Andre’s moment during the trophy ceremony. Andre finally decides he’s ready to talk and has only one thing to say:

“Look at me when I’m talking to you. I’m here for one reason: To challenge you to a world championship match at the Wrestlemania.”

-Then he grabs Hogan’s shirt & gold cross and rips them right off and throws them to the ground. In a great moment that couldn’t have been planned, Andre’s fingernail scratches Hogan pretty badly as he rips the shirt, so Hogan’s chest is bleeding as Andre walks away. Piper kneels down with Hogan and shows him that he’s bleeding, and sympathetically walks him off the set. Now, the reason that’s awesome is that even though Piper had turned face, they had been consistent in showing that he still didn’t like Hogan, so that was sort of the icing on the cake for this heel turn: Andre’s betrayal is so shocking that even Hulk’s worst enemy feels sorry for him. Great segment.

ADORABLE ADRIAN ADONIS (with Jimmy Hart) vs. MARIO MANCINI
-Adonis goes on the offensive immediately, pounding Mancini down and dropping a forearm as Gorilla goes ballistic about what just happened, and Bobby Heenan hasn’t come back to the booth yet. Adrian Adonis talks about the rumors of Roddy Piper’s retirement, saying that he’ll have to retire if a Piper-Adonis match ever takes place. Goodnight Irene finishes for Adrian as Bobby Heenan returns to the broadcast table, gloating about what he just accomplished.

-Wrestlemania III will be bigger, better, and BAAADDDEEERRR, in case you didn’t catch that the first time.

CAN-AM CONNECTION vs. IRON MIKE SHARPE & STEVE LOMBARDI
-Martel starts with Lombardi and ties him with an arm wringer that turns into a backdrop. Zenk tags in and rolls him up quickly for two. Lombardi goes on offensive with an Irish whip that Martel “blocks” from the apron, and the Can-Ams double-team him as Sharpe gets knocked off the apron. Lombardi rallies and pounds him down. Sharpe tags in and sends Zenk from turnbuckle to turnbuckle. Lombardi returns as Mr. Fuji warns that sooner or later, the Can-Ams will have to face Bob Orton & Don Muraco.

-Lombardi elbows Zenk down for two. Bodyslam and a stomp by Lombardi, then Sharpe comes in with a standing front facelock. Lombardi re-enters and keeps working him over, but Zenk crawls between his legs and makes the hot tag. Martel unloads on everything that moves. Zenk magically recovers and comes in to powerslam Lombardi, then slingshots Martel from the apron and onto Lombardi for the win.

-Mean Gene talks to Slick and commends him for his managerial skills: “You did a good job of managing those six girls in Detroit.” Butch Reed offers to give Tito Santana a whoopin’.

-NEXT SHOW NOW!

-Originally aired February 15, 1987.

-We’re still in Ft. Myers, FL.

-Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby Heenan.

HILLBILLY JIM & ROUGEAU BROTHERS vs. JOHNNY V & DREAM TEAM (with Dino Bravo)
-Mel Phillips announces it as Johnny V managing and Dino in the ring, but this is the match that we wind up getting. Hillbilly & Hammer start things. Jim offers a handshake but gets kicked in the gut. He rallies and atomic drops Hammer, and Raymond tags in and dropkicks Hammer down. Chops and punches are exchanged, but Raymond wins that battle and Jacques comes in to do some double-teaming.

-In comes Brutus and he gets caught in a backslide, with Hammer making the save. Hammer pounds down Jacques and chops him in the corner. Jacques tries to come off the second rope with a bodypress, but Hammer ducks it and tags in Johnny V. Johnny walks right into a small package for the sudden three-count. Dino comes in post-match and cleans house, but the faces mount a comeback and clear the ring.

-We go to WWF Superstars of Wrestling from the previous day, with Craig DeGeorge interviewing President Jack Tunney, who says he has a special announcement regarding Danny Davis. Before he can say it, we see Danny Davis sprinting out through the curtain and heading to the ring to officiate Tito Santana vs. Terry Gibbs. Tunney leaves to chase him down.

-Danny gets to the ring, and the referee in the ring refuses to leave, so Danny shoves him. Jack Tunney has seen enough and asks Howard Finkel to hand him the microphone. In front of the whole world, Jack Tunney fires Danny Davis right there, and the crowd ERUPTS. Tito, now realizing he can’t be fined & suspended for assaulting an EX-referee, immediately gets poised and ready to kick the living shit out of him, but Jimmy Hart suddenly shows up and asks Danny to come back to the locker room with him.

TITO SANTANA vs. TERRY GIBBS
-Gibbs attacks from behind and hammers Tito down to the mat, but Tito ducks a clothesline and hits the flying forearm right away for the win.

-Craig DeGeorge goes backstage to talk to Jimmy Hart & Danny Davis. Jimmy announces that he’s turning Danny into a wrestler and he has a pile of open contracts ready and waiting.

-Gene Okerlund talks to Paul Roma about his feud with Steve Lombardi. How did this not make the card for Wrestlemania III?

-Honky Tonk Man visits Phillips Recording in Memphis, where Elvis recorded all of his songs. He bashes Elvis for being a fat, untalented hack who dyed and greased his hair to steal Honky’s look.

RANDY “Macho Man” SAVAGE (Intercontinental Champion, with Elizabeth) vs. JERRY ALLEN
-Allen actually attacks Savage from behind before the bell, but Savage stun-guns him and slams him down. Flying elbow (while still wearing the robe and sunglasses) finishes.

-Post-match, Savage makes fun of Ricky Steamboat for hanging out with handicapped kids, asking him if he had visions of his own future.

-Gene Okerlund talks to George “The Animal” Steele, who brings him some Valentine’s Day candy.

THE KING (with Bobby Heenan) vs. MOONDOG SPOT
-Bobby Heenan gives JYD a pre-taped lesson on how to bow. Race headbutts Spot, but Spot reverses an Irish whip and hits him with a high knee. He goes for another high knee but misses, and Race rolls him into a cradle suplex for our third straight less-than-one-minute match.

PIPER’S PIT
-Hot Rod recaps the entire Hogan-Andre saga and says he went to the locker room to ask Hulk about the challenge, but Hulk wouldn’t talk to him. He calls out Hulk Hogan and demands an answer, but Hulk can’t even talk for a while. Piper keeps pushing him and pushing him for an answer until Hulk finally snaps and agrees to defend the title at Wrestlemania III.

BILLY JACK HAYNES vs. TIGER CHUNG LEE
-Lock-up to start, and by the way, call (313) 423-6666 for Silverdome tickets NOW. Seriously, I dare you. Headlock by Haynes, but Lee makes it to the corner to break. Hercules drops in to announce that he has signed to meet Haynes at Wrestlemania III. Gorilla Monsoon congratulates the Brain for signing matches for “two losers.”

-Meanwhile, Lee chops and chokes Haynes against the ropes. He pounds Haynes and snapmares him over. Kneedrop and another chop by Lee. He tries the chop again, but Haynes ducks it and applies the full nelson for the win.

-Wrestlemania III will be bigger…better…BAAAADDDDEEEERRRR.

KILLER BEES vs. RED DEMON & GLADIATOR
-Brunzell & Demon start. Brunzell turns a lock-up into a monkeyflip, but Demon shoves him into the ropes. Brunzell is ready with flying headscissors off that and Blair tags in to work the arm. By the way, 60% of the entire US population lives within a one-day car trip of the Silverdome, so there’s really no excuse for not buying a ticket.

-Slick drops in to announce that Sheik & Volkoff are going to take the sting out of the Bees at Wrestlemania III as Gladiator comes in to try his luck. Brunzell drops him to the mat with a hammerlock, and Blair comes back in and slams him down. He slingshots Gladiator into Brunzell for a hard smack. Brunzell hits a high dropkick and it’s a pier-sixer. Bee Sting on the Gladiator gets the win. Funny twist to the finish, as the Bees actually switched off without their masks, and the referee still didn’t catch it. Also, there are no obstructed view seats in the Silverdome.

-Gene Okerlund talks to the Hart Foundation about their newly-acquired belts.

-Moving on…

-Originally aired February 22, 1987.

-Ft. Myers, FL, one more time.

-Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby Heenan.

RICKY “The Dragon” STEAMBOAT vs. CHIC DONOVAN
-The jobber here actually looks like what I imagine Randy “The Ram” Robinson looked like at his peak. Donovan armdrags Steamboat right away, but Steamboat sweeps his leg and they stare down. Test of strength and they trade hammerlocks until Donovan makes it to the ropes. They trade hammerlocks again and then go to a lock-up against the ropes. Donovan slaps Steamboat, but gets armdragged for his efforts. The Wizard, of all people, drops in to declare that Andre the Giant will beat Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania III. But he won’t beat Kamala.

-Donovan knees Steamboat in the stomach and punches him. Series of chops and Steamboat backdrops Donovan. Bodyslam and dropkicks by Steamboat. Donovan tries a side headlock but Steamboat turns it into a backbreaker and cinches on a headlock. Donovan reverses to his own backbreaker and follows with a back suplex, then sends Steamboat to the floor. Bodyslam on the floor and Donovan goes back in the ring to pose. He heads back out to fire Steamboat back in the ring and continues working his back with chops, then sends him back to the floor. He goes outside and Steamboat finally mounts his comeback by reversing a bodyslam attempt on the floor. Back in the ring, a flying bodypress gives Steamboat the victory. I remember Bret Hart once saying that at TV tapings, you could pick out the jobber who got paired up with Ricky Steamboat because he would be the guy who was smiling before going out there.

WRESTLER’S REBUTTAL
-Hercules will prove once and for all that he’s the master of the full nelson at Wrestlemania III.

-Wrestlemania III will be bigger… better… BAAAAADDDDDEEEEERRRRR.

JUNKYARD DOG vs. BARRY O
-The card for Wrestlemania III continues to be announced at a breakneck pace, as Bobby Heenan promises that the King will housetrain JYD at Wrestlemania III. Bobby & Harley Race teach JYD how to kneel in a head-in-the-box promo.

-Barry O controls with forearms and a slam, but misses an elbow. He rams JYD into the turnbuckle, and JYD does a funny no-sell from it, dancing in place as Barry O celebrates prematurely. Thump gives JYD the win.

-Billy Jack Haynes predicts Wrestlemania wins for Hulk Hogan & Ricky Steamboat, and promises to prove that he’s the master of the full nelson.

SPECIAL INTERVIEW: ROWDY RODDY PIPER
-Mean Gene Okerlund interviews Roddy in the stands at the empty SunDome. Piper announces that he’s retiring, but he’s sticking around long enough to beat Adrian Adonis at Wrestlemania III.

ROWDY RODDY PIPER vs. ADORABLE ADRIAN ADONIS (with Jimmy Hart)
-From Saturday Night’s Main Event. Piper throws his kilt in Adonis’ face, which triggers a “skirt” joke about Adonis so obvious that Jesse takes Vince to task for making it. Piper Irish whips Adonis all over the place and bites him. Adonis offers a handshake, but Piper hangs onto the hand and whips him across the ring, then grabs the arm and snaps it over the top rope. Adonis desperately slugs him and rakes the chest & back. Piper fights back with fists and plants his face in the mat a few times. Adonis reverses a clothesline and goes for Goodnight Irene, but Piper yanks him out to the floor. Jimmy Hart tries to intervene and Piper punches him onto the ring apron. Referee gets distracted by Hart and Adonis blinds him with an atomizer and gets back into the ring. Blinded on the floor, Piper staggers around and can’t find the ring in time to beat the ten-count, and your winner is Adrian Adonis. They seemed to be rushing this, unfortunately.

-Gene Okerlund talks to Bobby Heenan, who calls Hogan a miserable excuse for a human being, after three years of commending Andre and calling him a good friend, while refusing to give him a title match.

-Jesse Ventura attempts to interview Randy Savage at the airport and mistakenly thinks a crowd of screaming girls are surrounding him. It turns out that the crowd is actually surrounding the Can-Am Connection.

COWBOY BOB ORTON & MAGNIFICENT MURACO (with Mr. Fuji) vs. DAVID STOUDEMIERE & SALVATORE BELLOMO
-Classy Freddy Blassie suddenly shows up to do guest commentary. This was during a period after Blassie decided he couldn’t handle the road schedule for a WWF manager anymore, but Vince just liked him so much that he tried to find something else for him to do.

-Bellomo shoulderblocks Orton down but Orton comes back with a quick armdrag and a kneedrop. Orton & Muraco double-clothesline Bellomo. Muraco hits a stomachbreaker as Blassie promises a Sheik/Volkoff victory at Wrestlemania III. Orton drops forearms and Mr. Fuji hints at a surprise for the Can-Am Connection, and they won’t be chased by little girls anymore when it’s over.

-Muraco plants Stoudemiere on the top rope and Orton finishes him with a superplex.

SNAKE PIT
-Returning after a long absence, Jake’s guest this week is Honky Tonk Man. Predating fake-shoots and Attitude and all that, the gist here is that Jake is calling out Honky for having a horrible gimmick. Really funny stuff, with Jake introducing him as the man with “the stupidest name I’ve ever heard.” Honky explains that he got the name “Honky Tonk Man” because his mother gave birth on top of a pool table at a bar & grill. Jake keeps waiving Damien at Honky as Honky tries to start a song & dance number, and Honky gets fed up and storms off.

-Jake ducks into the entrance to taunt Honky, not realizing that he’s sneaking around the other side, and when Jake turns around, Honky just DRILLS him with the guitar and leaves him laying. Jake finally turns face, months after the fans had already made that decision.

WRESTLEMANIA III REPORT
-The Can-Am Connection will face Muraco & Orton, and the Can-Ams may have “a possible surprise guest” in their corner. Didn’t happen. Hey, rumor experts, who was it gonna be?

-Hercules & Billy Jack Haynes will meet up in what Gene Okerlund speculates to be “a battle of the full nelsons.” Good to know Gene has been awake for the promos for this one.

-King Kong Bundy will come crashing down from Main Event Mountain to hang out with a bunch of midgets and face Hillbilly Jim.

-Randy Savage will defend the Intercontinental Title against Ricky Steamboat. That could be good.

-Roddy Piper will say farewell after facing Adrian Adonis. Adonis, by the way, has vowed that he will cut Piper’s hair.

-Hulk Hogan will have “a possible surprise guest” in his corner when he faces Andre the Giant. Didn’t happen. Who was it?

-The WWF roster gives their opinions on who’s going to win. Everybody is divided down heel/face lines, except for Tom Zenk, who calls the win for Andre, and Butch Reed, who says, “Personally, I think the Natural should win the world title!”

GEORGE “The Animal” STEELE vs. “The Natural” BUTCH REED (with Slick)
-Steele chases Slick out of the ring, but Slick distracts him and Reed attacks from behind. Fists are exchanged and Koko drops in and tells Reed that he’d better be ready.

-Steele chops and punches Reed, but Slick takes a cheap shot with the cane, and Steele chases him back to the dressing room, getting himself counted out in the process. Yes, that was the whole match.

-Gene Okerlund talks to Ricky Steamboat, and he’s ready for Randy Savage. Hulk Hogan drops in to promise that the pythons will pump for Andre the Giant.

That's all for this month...see you at Game Show Utopia.

The 411: Another hot month, and to think, this was only the B-show!

Final Score:  7.1   [ Good ]  legend

"The Can-Am Connection will face Muraco & Orton, and the Can-Ams may have “a possible surprise guest” in their corner. Didn’t happen. Hey, rumor experts, who was it gonna be?"

I heard it was some 17 year old kid named Robert Szatkowski, but it was only a one-shot deal...

Sorry, couldn't resist.

"I want this tape"

How hard is it for people to realize they have the first 50 episodes on wweclassics.com for only $4 a month?

The funny thing is, RVD's first appearance on WWE television was when he was 15 years old as a part of a Million Dollar Man skit. And yes, it was a one-shot deal.

And according to the Jake DVD, somebody backstage fucked up and instead of a cardboard guitar they handed Honky the real heavy wooden deal and that one shot legit almost knocked Jake out.

Ummm, I think people realize that, they would just rather have it for their collection instead of being forced to pay monthly to see old things.

Could it maybe of been Piper?

He promises to build a new mansion and call it Honkyland, which I believe was the original name for The Gap.
Classic!!

I remember the Hogan/Andre feud. I was 8 at the time and seeing Andre ripping Hogan's cross from around his neck was shocking.

I doubt there will ever be a more famous feud in professional wrestling.

The Danny Davis storyline was amazing. It just showed how good WWF was in building up a story over time back then. They even lucked out that Davis was the referee during Randy Savage's IC win over Tito a full year earlier because they were able to tie in Davis missing the foreign object into the crooked ref story arc.

Tunney's announcement also doesn't get credit as a classic example of "Botchamania." When he went to make the announcement, Tunney wasn't getting the right sound out of the microphone and knew he had the crowd in the palm of his hand so his announcement ended up:

"Referee Danny Davis (short pause to adjust the mic and ensure he has the crowd's full attention)...referee Danny Davis is suspended for LIFE!"

Not quite on the level of Vince telling the audience on the first The Main Event telecast "Mean Gene Okerlund...standing by...with Mean Gene" or Owen Hart's classic flub at Royal Rumble '94 ("that's why I kicked your leg ... out of your leg.") but still memorable.

Don Driggers...now THERE'S a name I haven't heard in years! I once saw him get his chest CRUSHED when one of those big Samoan guys (don't remember who) botched a power slam. Never saw him again.

Also...I remember when Roddy Piper and Jesse Ventura were tag team partners in the old Portland Wrestling back in the late '70s! I AM getting old!

These shows sound horrible. They need a dose of The Donald to get me interested.

"And according to the Jake DVD, somebody backstage fucked up and instead of a cardboard guitar they handed Honky the real heavy wooden deal and that one shot legit almost knocked Jake out."

According to Honky Tonk, Jake lied about that to blame someone else for his drug addictions.
