CHIKARA Review: Young Lions Cup VII, Night Two
Posted by Kevin Ford on 10.10.2009

Easton, PA – 8.15.2009

The weekend of August 14th, 15th, and 16th of 2009 brings you the 7th annual CHIKARA Young Lions Cup tournament! Last night, Colin Delaney made it past six other feisty Young Lions to make his way to the finals of the tournament on night three. Tonight, the second dozen competitors look to make their mark in CHIKARA. Just like on night one, the 12 competitors will compete in singles competition and the winners will advance to a Six Man Elimination match. The winner of the elimination match advances to the Young Lions Cup finals on Night three to face Colin Delaney. Who will make it to the finals tonight?

Commentary is provided by Leonard F. Chikarason, Ultramantis Black, Bryce Remsburg, Louden Noxious, Colin Delaney, and Mike Quackenbush.

The show starts with all of tonight’s competitors posing for the ceremonial Young Lions Cup picture. Bret Race is conspicuous by his absent for this, so.

Young Lions Cup, Round One
Yellow Dog vs. Bret “Ressle” Race

Bret Race comes out dawned in a red lucha mask and a red cape. There’s something suspicious about his appearance however. As it turns out, Bret Race is the very old ”Darkness” Lester Crabtree in a disguise trying his best to make it into the tournament. However, as he obviously exceeds the age limit by years and years, he is taken out of the tournament (Leonard F. Chikarason’s) decision. With that said, it’s time to draw a replacement at random from the hat! First name drawn by Leonard F. Chikarason is Vökoder. Vökoder is indeed here, and he is the robotic wrestler that’s been appearing in the CHIKARA crowds all around Pennsylvania. The match is on!

Young Lions Cup, Round One
Yellow Dog vs. Vökoder

Vökoder stares down at Yellow Dog who asks Vökoder to rub his belly. Instead, Vökoder stomps Yellow Dog and kicks him right between the shoulder blades. He lands some Mongolian chops. Dog pushes Vökoder down, and he hops up. Vökoder gets kicked in the head by Dog, and Dog backslides Vökoder for two. Dog goes for a school boy for two. Dog sits up and gets kicked in the face by Vökoder. Vökoder delivers a hard set of chops before Yellow Dog comes back with headbutts to Vökoder’s midsection. Vökoder fights back, but gets a pair of boots from Dog for his trouble. Dog lands a hurricanrana from the second rope. Dog picks up a Dog toy in his mouth, and Vökoder tries to pull it out. He does but falls out of the ring. Dog heads up top and lands a big dive onto Vökoder on the floor. Dog tosses Vökoder back into the ring, and Dog goes up to the top rope. Dog avoids an attack from Vökoder and rolls up Vökoder for the two count. Vökoder chops Dog across the chest. Dog hits a back body drop on Vökoder and pins him for two. Dog chops Vökoder and tries a whip. Vökoder reverses, Dog floats over, and Vökoder spears Dog down. Vökoder lands a forward DDT (called the SDT) for the win, defeating Yellow Dog in 3:37. Well, I guess that’s how you put over a new comer. Yellow Dog also looked decent for the short amount of time he was in the match, but I didn’t care much for his schtick. 3/4*

Young Lions Cup, Round One
Soldier Ant vs. Carpenter Ant

This is Carpenter Ant’s in ring debut. He helped The Colony defeat at Aniversario Yang in May, but this is the first we have seen of him since. Both Ants stomp around the ring at the bell before locking up. They release and Carpenter Ant gets a waist lock. They exchange wrist locks before Soldier Ant takes Carpenter Ant down by the knee. Carpenter gets the ropes to break the single leg hold. They lock up once more, and Carpenter evades a series of whips. Carpenter does a cartwheel, but then Soldier Ant dropkicks Carpenter Ant to the floor. Soldier Ant fakes him out on a dive. Soldier Ant rolls up Carpenter for two. Soldier Ant twists on a wrist lock while Carpenter Ant lays on the mat. Soldier Ant snapmares Carpenter Ant down and lands an saluting elbow for two. Soldier Ant puts on a side headlock and drops to a knee. Carpenter Ant works out into a hammerlock. Soldier Ant runs around the ring, releases and sends Carpenter Ant to the floor. Carpenter comes back in and tries the figure four. Solider kicks Carpenter back out to the floor, but again Carpenter comes back in. Carpenter applies a Octopus variation and then continues working on Soldier Ant’s arm. Carpenter snapmares Soldier Ant over and then kicks him in the shoulder blades. Carpenter Ant continues to concentrate on Soldier’s arm. Soldier Ant headscissors Carpenter on the mat, but Carpenter works out and goes back to Soldier Ant’s arm. Soldier Ant picks up Carpenter Ant and slams him down, but Carpenter holds on and keeps the arm hold. On their feet. Soldier Ant trips Carpenter Ant and pins him for two. Soldier Ant know works on Carpenter’s arm before rolling into a pin for two. Soldier Ant smashes Carpenter in the face with forearms and hits the ropes. Carpenter knocks down Soldier Ant with the Polish Hammer for two. Up on the top rope, the ants brawl. Soldier Ant hits a belly to belly suplex from the top rope onto Carpenter Ant. Soldier pins Carpenter for two. Soldier Ant tries to pick up Carpenter in a Fireman’s Carry. Carpenter avoids it, hooks the arms of Soldier, and wraps his legs around Soldier’s body. Soldier Ant tries to break free, but Carpenter rolls through and keeps the submission on. Soldier Ant’s arm drops for two, but fights out of the third. Soldier Ant rolls the submission over into the CHIKARA Special! Carpenter Ant has no choice but to tap out in 10:06, meaning Soldier Ant advances to the semi-finals. Carpenter Ant had a real good first match here, and already has a cool submission hold. So if this match was to show of his skills, it was a positive. Other than that, not a whole lot to this match, but it was still good. **1/4

Young Lions Cup, Round One
Darin Corbin vs. Ryan Cruz

The partners shake hands before locking up. They exchange waist locks before going into a series of reversals prior to a stalemate. They lock up once more with Ryan getting a side headlock. Corbin pushes him off, but Cruz knocks him down with a shoulder block for his trouble. The two again go back and forth before reaching yet another stalemate. Ryan applies another side headlock after a lock up. Corbin tries to bounce of the ropes to escape and Cruz holds on. These two recreate the slow motion spot they did at the Young Lions Cup two years ago, and it’s just as great now as it was then. The fans play along, so the Easton fans finally did something right. Corbin pokes the eyes in slow-mo, and Bryce yells at him in slow-mo. Do I really need to call spots for this? They roll up and pose with fists at each other still in slow-mo. They go back to normal speed with a flapjack and senton to Cruz from Corbin. Corbin lays in the elbows to the back or Cruz, and Cruz comes back with a chin breaker and an Enzugiri. Cruz hits the ropes only to be caught with an Urinage back breaker from Corbin. Corbin hits a delayed back suplex on Cruz and then drops the knee on Cruz’s back. Corbin lays in the shots to the back and face of Cruz. Cruz attacks the stomach of Corbin to get up. Cruz hits the ropes running into a Bear hug from Corbin. Cruz claps his hands across Corbin’s skull to get out it, bites Corbin’s head, then hits a flying clothesline and spin kick on Corbin. Cruz slams Corbin and then lands a moonsault from the second rope for the two count. Corbin pushes Cruz into the corner and shoulder blocks Cruz in the gut. Corbin heads up top. Corbin tries a double axe handle but Cruz catches him with a spine buster. Back on their feet, Corbin backslides Cruz fro two. Cruz sunset flips Corbin for two. Cruz tries a maneuver, but his hurt back doesn’t allow him too. Corbin goes to the corner where Cruz comes with a forearm. Cruz catches Corbin with a boot. Corbin catches another boot, and lands Cruz with the Cruz Control out of the corner for the two count only. Cruz blocks the neckbreaker and lands a spin kick to Corbin’s face. Cruz pins Corbin in 12:12 after hitting what he calls “The Boom Shaka-Laka” advancing to the semi-finals tonight. The North Star Express are awesome alone, and here they prove that they’re awesome solo. Real good stuff out of these two, getting the non-existant crowd to care about what they did. Well done, guys. ***

Young Lions Cup, Round One
Shane Hollister vs. Trik Davis

They lock one hand, and Trik gets Shane in a side headlock. Trik lands a quick arm drag and a shoulder block. Both men get back up and Trik talks trash. Shane and Trik lock up and Shane gets a waist lock. Trik goes down and applies a headlock. Trick rolls over into an armbar. Trik comes up to a wrist lock, and Shane uses his foot to break into his own wrist lock. Trik does the exact same but gets into a waist lock. Trik tries La Magistral for two, and then takes Shane over in a side headlock which Shane turns into a headscissors. Trik tries to work out but Shane rolls into a sunset flip pin. They exchance pin attempts to no avail. Trik arm drags Shane, but Shane gets up and sends Trik to the floor. Shane goes out with a pescado into an arm drag. Shane reverses a pin from Trik, and Trik hops up and drops his knees across Shane’s chest. Trik applies a waist lock. Shane gets up and elbows Trik in the face. Trik elbows Shane to stop it, but Shane hits a springboard tornado DDT. Both men lay on the mat. They get up at the same time blasting each other with forearms. Shane blocks a roaring clothesline with a nice jab to Trik’s face. Shane hits the ropes but Trik runs at him with a big knee to the gut. Shane runs at Trik who goes for the ropes and lands an elbow. Shane hits a rolling kick to the head then hits a seated blockbuster. Shane lands an Enzugiri before a powerbomb and faceplant. Shane rolls up Trik and only gets two! Shane puts Trik on the apron, standing on the bottom rope. Both men get on the ropes in the corner. Trik hits a jumping Urinage from the top rope to get the two count. Shane blocks a clothesline, but Trik hits an Ace Crusher anyhow. Trik lands a backpack stunner for two. Trik then hooks on the Hangmen’s Clutch (his trainer was Chris Hero), and Shane elbows Trik in the back of the head to escape. Trik picks up Shane, but Shane tries for the O’Connor Roll. Trik escapes, but gets an Enzugiri for his troubles. Shane uses the top rope to assist in a big knee to the chest of Trik Davis. Trik kicks out at two. Shane pops off the middle rope, and Trik trips him. Trik lands a superkick, then a cross-legged Michinoku Driver to score the pin in 13:58. Trik makes it to the semi-finals. Well, it felt long but it wasn’t so bad. I think it was good that with both these men abusing each others heads that the finish tied into that somewhat. Both guys looked good and I would have no problem with either of them coming back. ***

Leonino reverses a whip, but Grizzly reverses again into a brain buster for the pin in 7:12. Another good debut for Leonino and the crowd got behind him which is always good. Pretty short, which is good considering the last match went ages. **1/4

Young Lions Cup, Round One
Player Uno vs. Player Dos

More lock ups, more side headlocks, more wrist locks, more stalemates…I feel like I’ve seen this before! But yeah, that’s what they do in the beginning. Not that they’re to blame, it’s the classic opening janx. Uno takes down Dos in a side headlock for a two count, and Dos turns into a headscissors. Uno kicks out of it and now Dos takes Uno down in a side headlock. Both go for a headlock which almost leads to a bad clash, but they again trade headlocks and headscissors. Dos uses his agility to work out of it. They slap hands in respect. Uno waist locks Dos and goes for the O’Connor Roll. Dos escapes and leapfrogs Uno. Uno low bridges the ropes sending Dos to the floor. Uno torpedos with a topé through the middle and top rope onto Dos. Uno catches Dos with a back breaker in the ring for a two count. Uno hits the pitfall, which is a spin into a facebuster. Uno misses a top rope moonsault allowing Dos to whip Uno to the corner. Dos hits a flying forearm followed by a side suplex and a standing moonsault. All this only gets Dos a dos count. See what I did there? Dos turns a slam from Uno into an inverted DDT for the two count. Uno throws Dos to the corner and lands him on the shoulders. Dos comes down and Uno tries for the Dig Dug Driver. Dos turns it into a tornado DDT for the two count. Dos picks up Uno by the shoulders, and Uno escapes. Dos hops up and hits Uno with a reverse hurricanrana. Dos heads to the top rope. Dos misses a frog splash. Uno picks up Dos and lands a big neck breaker on his knee for two. Uno then lands the Eye of the Hurricane for the two count. Uno picks up Dos and Dos knees Uno in the face. Dos hits the pelé kick on Uno. Uno punches Dos, and Dos responds with a superkick. Dos ducks a clothesline attempt from Uno, and Dos flips over Uno into an inverted DDT. Dos a swinging face plant before heading to the top rope. Dos hits the “Incredible Hulk Frog Splash” for the pin in 11:50, making him the sixth and final participant in the Young Lions Cup semi-finals. Well, it shouldn’t surprise me that these two put on an awesome match because they’re an awesome team and great singles workers as well. Both guys ruled, and I would’ve been happy with either guy winning. ***1/4

Arik Cannon vs. Jigsaw

This match was originally supposed to see Arik Cannon take on Lince Dorado, but Lince suffered an injury on Night One that forced him to miss the match. Instead, Jigsaw will be taking on Arik. Arik and Jigsaw teamed up during the 2006 Tag World Grand Prix, so it’s another partner clash!

Arik rallies the fans with his “OH YEAH!” Kool-Aid Man cry. They lock up and Arik works out of a waist lock into a wrist lock. Jigsaw spins around on the mat to get into his own wrist lock. Jigsaw places Arik up top. Arik fights Jigsaw up, so Jig hops up with an Enzugiri. Jigsaw lands a DDT on Arik off the top for the two. Arik reverses a whip, and catches Jigsaw on his shoulders. Arik lands Total Anarchy and Jigsaw kicks out! Arik hits a spinning brainbuster and again only gets two. Jigsaw hits a satellite DDT as well as a superkick. Jigsaw rolls up Arik with a jackknife pin to score the three in 10:50. Wow, that was a great match. This match reminded me of Arik’s match with Ophidian back at Aniversario Yang which I also loved. It also got me pumped for the Golden Dreams Match tomorrow night, which was the goal, so well done. ***1/2

Mascarita Dorada vs. Pierrothito

Skayde and Turbo were supposed to tag with these two tonight, but that’s not happening since they’re not there for an unknown reason. Pierrothito holds up a Puerto Rican flag and taunts Dorada with it. Dorada takes it and taunts Pierrothito with it making him run at it like a bull. Dorada uses the flag like a bull flag. Pierrothito show boats again. Pierrothito slaps Dorada on the back before throwing Dorada into the opposite corner. Dorada evades Pierrothito’s attack and kicks the legs out from Pierrothito. Dorada hits the ropes, rolls under Pierrothito’s leapfrog, and Dorada wheelbarrows into an armdrag. Dorada goes up the ropes and twists into a headbutt to Pierrothito. Back in the ring, Dorada catches Pierrothito with a swinging hurricanrana. Dorada dumps Pierrothito off his shoulders and moonsaults onto Pierrothito. Dorada signals for another, runs up the ropes and uses multiple jumps on the ropes. Pierrothito blocks, hits the ropes, and locks into a back-bridging chinlock for the win in 10:59. Wow, that was fast-paced fun stuff. Sometimes CHIKARA brings in outsiders from other countries and they don’t light the world on fire. These guys most certainly did. Very different stuff, and although I much prefer the faux luchadores of the CHIKARA world, I was totally fine with this match. I’m glad they came in and worked real hard. Great times. ***1/4

Dos drags Soldier Ant to the middle of the ring and hits his big frog splash to get the pinfall in 17:35, advancing to the final round of the Young Lions Cup to face Colin Delaney. Speaking of, Colin comes out to look at Dos post match. More good stuff in the finals, but Dos didn't stand out enough to make him see credible. Still, good wrestling and story telling. ***1/4

The 411: A better show than Night One I feel. Better matches with better pacing throughout, and the non-tournament matches I also enjoyed more. I’d pick up this night. The crowd was much better and the overall package was more enjoyable.

Final Score:  7.3   [ Good ]  legend

I was at both shows and I must say the second show's atmosphere was much better. From what I heard, the third day was even better.
Go CHIKARA.
