CHIKARA Review: Hiding In Plain Sight
Posted by Kevin Ford on 10.30.2009

Nashua, NH – 9.13.2009

CHIKARA closes its New England weekend by making there New Hampshire debut. With the debut, CHIKARA has brought a stacked card with them. Player Dos defends his Young Lions Cup for the very first time against his partner, and the man he beat in the first round of the Young Lions Cup tournament, Player Uno. Bryan Danielson, who signed a contract with WWE a few weeks before the show, requested to visit CHIKARA one last time before heading to the WWE. The CHIKARA office granted his request, and tonight he will be team up with a man he made it to the finals of the King of Trios tournament with, Claudio Castagnoli. They will face two of the top CHIKARA Tecnicos in “Lightning” Mike Quackenbush and Jigsaw. In the main event, a rematch of sorts as The Osirian Portal defend their Campeonatos de Parejas once again against The Colony of Fire Ant and Soldier Ant. Last time, The Colony had gained so many points that they were able to make their first title shot a one-fall only affair. This time, the bout is back to two out of three falls. All this, and a whole lot more awaits you.

Commentary is provided by Bryce Remsburg, Louden Noxious, Leonard F. Chikarason, Mike Quackenbush, and Jimmy “Equinox” Olsen.

Hallowicked picks up Frightmare and launches him onto Chuck. Icarus tries the Shiranui and fails. Hallowicked lands the Graveyard Smash to score the pinfall at 10:51. A red hot opening match which was great for a brand new live crowd. These two teams always deliver, and they did that here in spades. ***

Sara powers Ariel into the corner. After some weird affection spot, they lock up. Sara gets a side headlock. Ariel escapes into a hammer lock. Sara and Ariel switch capitalizing on each other’s arm. Sara takes Ariel over in a side headlock for a two count. Sara cranks on it on the mat. Sara brings Ariel up as Ariel fights back. Ariel applies a full nelson and Sara grabs the ropes. Ariel evades a back splash in the corner. Ariel clubs Sara in the corner. Sara comes out with a clothesline for two. Sara suplexes Ariel into a sit-down splash. Sara goes to the second rope where Ariel catches her and tosses her off. Ariel hits a bulldog after running up the ropes for two. Ariel ducks a clothesline and dropkicks Sara’s leg out. Ariel dropkicks Sara in the face and pins her for two. Sara reverses a whip, but Ariel comes with a flying forearm. Sara blocks a suplex , and Ariel ducks a kick. Ariel gives Sara the three amigos suplex for two. Sara delivers a side kick to Ariel, and then a cappo kick. Sara applies the Royal Butterfly and suplexes Ariel over for the pinfall victory in 9:46. This was a good match, around par with most of the other women’s matches you see. Sara has for sure improved over the year and I honestly could see her contending with a few of the male members of the roster. Ariel also looked good, and the crowd liked her because she was the hometown girl. **

Donst attacks Hydra some more and Leonard threatens to suspend him forever. Donst gives and leaves the building. The fans chant “Lobsterman” as the CHIKARA staff check on them. Delirious catches him with a headbutt to the stomach as he comes off. Delirious delivers the Praying Mantis Bomb to Grizzly to score the pin at 10:37. This was another excellent tag team match that further shows the devolution of The Roughnecks entity. As if the match didn’t make it clear, Grizzly shouted at Kingston and left him in the ring. This version of The Order leave this weekend with two points in tow. ***

Quack looks for the topé con heilo on Claudio, but Claudio catches him and powerbombs Quack back into the ring! Jigsaw looks to attack Jigsaw, but Bryan chop blocks Jigsaw’s bad knee! Team Uppercut isolates Jigsaw and concentrates on damaging his bad knee. Bryan roars with hard forearms to Jigsaw as he tries to escape a leg hold in a great moment. Team Uppercut’s working over of Jigsaw’s leg was nothing short of wrestling mastery. This was a hell of match for Bryan to give the fans of CHIKARA before heading out, and I thank him for all his contributions. ****1/4

Afterwards, Bryan comes back in the ring and says a word to the fans, the other wrestlers in the match, stating that independent wrestling is still in good hands when he leaves. He challenges all the wrestlers to be “The Best in the World” as the fans call him.

Strangely, we cut to a promo with…Sal Rinauro?!

We then cut back to Dragon slapping hands with the fans while “The Final Countdown” plays one last time in CHIKARA. I very much look forward to seeing Bryan Danielson in WWE, as well as Nig-…wait, scratch that last name. Just Bryan.

Jagged comes out carrying the Champions of Charity award they stole from Lobsterman earlier. Equinox got hurt last night, and therefore a replacement must be found! We go back to the trusty CHIKARA hat to pull names. Matt Classic? Not here. Scotty Goldman? Not here. Colt CaBunny? Not here. Colt Cabana? Is here! Colt is back in CHIKARA for the first time in over seven years! Now that we have our 10 men, the match can begin!

Dasher fights back and places Colin in the Tree of Joey Lawrence. Vin stops Dasher from the baseball slide. Louden Noxious suddenly announces that it’s a beautiful day in Nashua Ballpark and everyone sets up like they’re in a baseball game! Bryce even sets up as the umpire! The fans all do the wave! Vin can’t believe what’s happening. I can’t even explain this spot, but it’s AWESOME. Needless to say, it leads to all the Tecnicos landing baseball slides to Colin in the corner. Holy cow, that was quite astonishing. Shane Matthews pours water on Bryce, and Bryce throws him out of the game. It’s madness as the match breaks down with the sides in an all out brawl! Dives and stuff happens as everyone is grouped together on the floor. Shane Matthews huffs and puffs as he comes back in the ring. However, Lobsterman Costa comes out. He gets in the ring (Bryce is distracted on the floor), and gets nailed with the lobster crab! Lince goes up top and lands a Shooting Star Press for the pinfall in 16:15. Well, CHIKARA has set a legendary match here with a spot that will not be forgotten by those who see it. The wrestling, however little there was of it, was good. But my God was this an incredibly fun match that everyone needs to say. Wrestling wise the match was **1/2, but entertainment wise, it was ***** easy.

Dasher Hatfield cuts a promo after the match:

Dos hooks Uno’s neck and lands the B13 for the pin in 10:34. A very good match with Dos redeeming his efforts from his lackluster title win against Colin Delaney. I really hope The Super Smash Bros. don’t end up breaking up because I enjoy them as a team, but they are really great opponents as well. ***1/2

Another fabulous tag team match from these two, that was almost as incredible as their match back at “Revelation X”. Without a doubt, these two teams belong on the top of the CHIKARA spectrum, and it’s nice to see them with outside bookings elsewhere in the coming months. The era of The Colony has finally been ushered in, and I for one am pleased to see it. ****1/4

The Osirian Portal, who grabbed their belts after they lost, hand them over to The Colony and raise their hands. A sign of The Osirian Portal’s inevitable Tecnico turn.

The 411: After a mundane showing in Massachusetts, CHIKARA really came back with a fabulous show tonight. Two matches that were over four stars, many in the three star or higher range, and an outrageously fun 10 man tag make this a must buy show. The titles changing hands also make it very notable. This one is worth purchasing folks, it’s one of the finer shows of 2009 (in good company with Revelation X and Aniversario Yang).
411 Elite Award
Final Score:  8.5   [ Very Good ]  legend

Sara Del Rey had the best match of last years Ted Petty Invitational from IWA Mid South. Del Rey took on Claudio Castagnoli and they had a fabulous 15-20 minute match. I was there live with a friend and immediately after the match he turned to me and said MOTY. And I had to agree with him. Grant it last year I was in a wrestling slump since ROH sucked shit back then and WWE was on par with ROH. Only companies I really followed were CHIKARA, IWA MS, CZW, and TNA. And we all know how TNA and CZW was back then as well.
