Break It Down: JAPW Holy Ouch 2
Posted by Ryan Rozanski on 12.24.2009

Holy Ouch 2 on May 9th, 2009.

Opening Match: Trent Acid vs. Joe Hardway
Acid attacks from behind. Hardway recovers and lands a dive to the floor. Annie Social stops Hardway from performing a top rope move which allows Acid to hit a clothesline. Acid just spikes Hardway off a variation of a splash mountain. Hardway comes back with a flying elbow drop. Social interjects herself and hits Hardway with a chinbreaker. Acid connects with two yakuza kicks for the win at 6:54. Decent enough opener but I have a problem with the amount of offense Hardway got in. For all intensive purposes, this should have been a quick squash. Acid debuted in the main event of the last show and is a clear contender for the world title. The back and forth nature made for a better match, but Hardway should have gotten destroyed here. **

Match #2: Danny Demanto vs. Mo Sexton
Demanto says this match is for the NJ State Title aka the old title he stole from a fan. Sexton connects some kicks and back drops Demanto. Demanto catches Sexton with a senton and follows with a corner crossbody. He locks in a camel clutch but Sexton impressively powers out. Sexton walks into a lariat but comes back with a series of his own. Sexton pounces Demanto but gets clotheslined to the outside. Demanto sits Sexton on a chair on the floor and fakes a dive. Sexton catches Demanto coming off the apron and somewhat slams him on the floor. He follows with two dives onto a propped up Demanto. Back in, Sexton hits a stunner for a two count. He misses a frog splash and Demanto hits a psycho driver for the victory at 10:41. Once again, I go into a Demanto match with low expectations and come away pleasantly surprised. I'm unsure if he's capable of producing anything great, but he always does some small things that make the match more enjoyable. Sexton looked good and I wouldn't mind seeing him again. **¼

Match #3: Monsta Mac and Havok vs. Trevor Murdoch and Brodie Lee
Murdoch takes it to Mac early but gets over-powered. The Heavy Hitters hit a shoulder block on Lee. Havok finds himself in the wrong corner and the Hillbilly Wrecking Crew work him over. Havok catches Murdoch with a boot and makes the tag. Mac cleans house until Murdoch catches him with a superplex. Homicide runs to the ring with a chair and chases Murdoch through the crowd. Havok spears Lee and Mac lands a top rope splash for the win at 9:35. As a whole, this worked pretty effectively. Looking at the card, I was wondering why Homicide wasn't involved with the HWC at all so the interference here made sense. As far as the match, all four men weren't afraid to be stiff with each other. The heat segment dragged a little but this ended up being a fun match and a good way for Homicide to gain a measure of revenge. **¼

Match #4: Bandido Jr. vs. Prince Mustafa Ali
Ali tries some quick pin attempts. He slaps Bandido, who responds with some chops and clotheslines. Bandido sends Ali to the outside with an enzuigiri. Bandido snaps off a hurricanrana but gets caught with a knee and a kick to the back. Ali hits a powerslam and takes over. Bandido back drops Ali to the floor but Ali blocks a dive with a nice dropkick. Bandido knocks Ali off the apron and lands a dive to the outside. Back in, Ali hits a senton on Bandido who was draped over the top rope. Bandido hits a tornado DDT along with a spinning neckbreaker and a brainbuster. They trade slaps on the top rope and Bandido hits a backcracker from the middle rope for a nearfall. Bandido hits a flatliner and locks in a koji clutch for the victory at 11:34. The reason I really liked this match was that they had you believing the match was going one way and then changed things up. Bandido also put over the koji clutch as his finisher as Ali tapped out instantly. These two meshed well and provided some good action. ***

Match #5: Amasis and Ophidian vs. Hallowicked and Frightmare
Amasis uses his agility to catch Hallowicked with a leg lariat. Ophidian and Frightmare have a lucha exchange and Ophidian snaps off a headscissors. The Osirian Portal double team Incoherence. Frightmare connects with a pele kick on Amasis followed by a dropkick. Incoherence isolate Amasis. They hit a nice side slam-leg drop combination. Ophidian connects with a springboard forearm on Frightmare and makes the tag. Ophidian cleans house with some springboard moves and hits a spinning headscissors on Frightmare. Ophidian ducks a yakuza kick from Hallowicked and lands a dive to the outside onto Frightmare. Amasis hits a flying clothesline on Hallowicked and Ophidian follows with a top rope moonsault. Frightmare leaps over Hallowicked to catch Amasis with a hurricanrana. He dives onto Amasis while Hallowicked hits Go 2 Sleepy Hollow on Ophidian for a nearfall. Frightmare spikes Ophidian with a hurricanrana and lands double knees. Amasis makes Hallowicked DDT Frightmare. The Osirian Portal land the Osirian Sacrament on Frightmare for the win at 10:49. It's no surprise that these two teams had great chemistry based on them having wrestled together in CHIKARA. This match got a mixed reaction over at the JAPW message board as some just didn't like the lucha style of it. If you're into CHIKARA, you know what these two teams are capable of and will enjoy this match. This was a solid exhibition and they packed a lot of action into only eleven minutes. ***

Match #6: JAPW NJ State Title: Eddie Kingston © vs. Archadia
Bandido Jr. comes out to ringside to watch the match. Archadia stalls to frustrate Kingston, although it doesn’t seem to work. Archadia catches Kingston with a dropkick. Kingston throws him to the outside and whips him into the guardrail. He hits an overhead suplex back in the ring but Archadia comes back with a springboard dropkick along with his signature legdrop. Archadia dodges a Backfist to the Future but can’t dodge a saito suplex. Bandido gets on the apron. The distraction allows Archadia to roll up Kingston and become the new JAPW NJ State Champion at 9:20. This was definitely a letdown. First of all, the first three minutes of the match were stalling. They had some decent back and forth but the action was capped off with a screwy and predictable finish. I agree with the decision to put the belt on Archadia but the structure of the match made it look like he really lucked into the title. *¾

Match #7: Dan Maff vs. Necro Butcher
They start brawling before the bell. Maff lands a dive to the floor and throws a chair at Necro. The action goes into the crowd and apparently this match is falls count anywhere. Necro controls until Maff goes low. Necro attacks Maff with a table, using it to hit an assisted senton. Maff comes back with a garbage can shot and lays Necro on a table. Maff hits a senton from the bleachers, putting Necro through the table. Necro recovers and starts throwing chairs at Maff. He calls for a fan to give him a chair. The fan mistakenly thought that was his cue to throw a chair at Maff and an altercation ensues. Necro throws some chairs into the ring and the action follows. Necro hits a chair slam along with a spinning neckbreaker onto some chairs. He connects with punches and chops in the corner. Maff suplexes Necro onto a chair and hits a burning hammer for a nearfall. Maff sets up two chairs and hits another burning hammer onto them for the win at 15:06. This was one of the better Necro brawls that I’ve seen in some time. Maff definitely knows how to work this style of match and they kept things interesting for the majority of the contest. If you’ve been reading my reviews, you know how I feel about these type of matches. However, this was a pretty solid brawl. If you’re a fan of this style of match, you’ll like this a lot more than me. **¾

Brodie Lee and Trevor Murdoch attack Maff after the match. Homicide comes out to make the save. Maff and Homicide stare each other down. This all means a lot more if you know the history between these two. Let's just say they have a checkered past. They shake hands only for Homicide to hit an ace crusher.

Match #8: JAPW World Heavyweight Title: Jay Lethal © vs. Teddy Hart vs. Homicide vs. Azrieal
Homicide and Hart start slugging it out before the other two men can enter. Lethal hits a flatliner-DDT combination on Homicide and Hart. The structure of the match allows two men to be in the ring at a time while the other two stay on the apron. Lethal gets worked over. Homicide locks in a sharpshooter, causing Hart to get angry and break it up. Azrieal pushes Hart off the top and to the floor. Homicide monkey flips Lethal into a hurricanrana from Azrieal. Homicide misses a charge and Azrieal lands a sloppy dive to the floor. Hart adds a springboard moonsault and ends up in the front row. Hart uses the guardrail to land another springboard moonsault onto Homicide in the crowd. In the ring, Hart attempts to powerbomb Lethal but just kind of falls over. Azrieal hits a double stomp on Lethal but gets caught with a tornado DDT from Homicide. Homicide turns Lethal inside-out with a lariat for a two count. Azrieal hits a butterfly suplex on Homicide while Hart and Lethal brawl outside of the ring. Homicide misses a splash. Lethal lands a diving headbutt onto him followed by a frog splash by Azrieal and a shooting star press from Hart. Lethal superkicks Hart off the apron. Lethal hits the Lethal Combination on Azrieal followed by a dragon suplex to retain his title at 13:13. There were a few rough spots but this ended up being an extremely fun four-way. I wished the match received a little more time as there was a lot of history here that could have been built upon. Hart actually looked decent and the other three men put in their usually solid performances. Good main event and match of the night. ***¼

Brodie Lee and Trevor Murdoch attack Homicide. Lethal tries to make the save to no avail. Hart clears the ring of the Hillbilly Wrecking Crew and shakes Lethal’s hand. Hart and Homicide also appear to make amends but Homicide just hits him with an ace crusher.

The 411: Holy Ouch 2 continues the trend set by International Invasion by delivering a solid yet unspectacular show. Bandido and Ali have a fun match while the Osirian Portal and Incoherence show their great chemistry in a good showcase. The main event is also enjoyable and if you’re into brawls, you’ll like Necro/Maff as well. There’s enough good stuff on this show to earn a slight recommendation but once again, nothing will blow you away.

Final Score:  7.0   [ Good ]  legend

JAPW is notorious as a company where big-name wrestlers work but don't put much effort into their matches.

I wish you'd continue reviewing PWG on a regular basis. Anyone on 411 planning on reviewing the BOLA shows?

I will continue to review the current PWG shows. Guerre Sans Frontieres will be done shortly and I have Against the Grain in my stack to watch. I'll also cover BOLA 2009 when those DVDs are released.

Glad to hear. I think you'll love Guerre. It's my indy show of the year after Threemendous II.

Against the Grain is also a very fun little show. Lost/Ryan and Kendrick/Strong are really great matches on there.
