Views from the Hawke’s Nest: Pro Wrestling Guerrilla The Perils of Rock ‘n’ Roll Decadence 2011

Peter Avalon vs. Brian-Cage Taylor
I feel like I haven’t seen Avalon in the longest time…a quick check of the interwebs tells me that’s foolish because he was on PWG Eight

They start with a test of strength, which is won by Senior Official, RICK KNOX (it’s good that he is so strong, because he is going to be the only referee tonight according Excalibur on commentary)…Cage got sent to the outside and Avalon hit a nice sommersault plancha…back in the ring, Cage came right back with a Sit-Out Alabama Slam…Cage worked him over for a while after that…Avalon hit a springboard crossbody for a nearfall, but Cage cut him again…Cage put Avalon on the top rope, but Avalon hit a tornado DDT and started his comeback…they traded some big moves and nearfalls…in a really cool spot, Cage suplexed Avalon from the apron back into the ring from the middle rope (that was not a very good description of what happened, but rest assured, it was a cool spot)…Avalon came back with some kicks and a swinging neckbreaker but Cage kicked out…CAGE WITH A HUGE DISCUS LARIAT; Cage than locks in a cloverleaf, while standing on Avalon’s head, which forces Avalon to tap immediately

A nice little opener that got the fans into the show, without overshadowing the rest of the matches…I actually would have put over Avalon here, so he could get some credibility at the expense of a tag team wrestler…I think it is time to start pushing Avalon as a goofy babyface because he has a natural connection with the Reseda crowd, and he can fly around a bit
Match Rating: **1/2

Willie Mack vs. Ryan Taylor
Mack is very over after making the semi-finals at BOLA

Taylor and Mack went back and forth early on, while Excalibur and Joey Ryan discusses on commentary whether it was Alex Koslov (Peter Orlov in FCW) in the stands…Taylor hit some big elbows, but Mack hit a nice dropkick…Taylor repeatedly failed to do a Mexican Surfboard, but settled to just bash Mack’s knees on the mat (American Dragon style)…Mack ended up on the outside and Taylor hit a suicide dive…Mack came back with a big Shoryuken and a POUNCE~! (Excalibur and Joey Ryan explained that Human Tornado has been mentoring Mack)…Taylor came back with some big strikes, but Mack survived them…Taylor went for a big move, but Mack slammed him down and hit a big Frog Splash: 1…2…3. That finish was out of nowhere.

This match did not flow very well, but the crowd enjoyed it and popped big for the finish so the boys certainly did something right…I prefer the Taylor Boys to be in tag matches, as their single matches are usually missing something
Match Rating: **1/2

RockNES Monsters (Johnny Yuma & Johnny Goodtime) vs. Super Smash Bros. (Player Uno & Player Dos)
This is the long-awaited PWG debut for the Super Smash Bros.

The crowd is hyped for this match…SSB completely controlled Yuma for a while, until Goodtime finally tagged in and slapped around Dos…the crowd is red-hot for this match…Dos came back with a lionsault to a standing Yuma…Yuma got worked over for a while, escaped and Goodtime made a hot tag and ran wild on the SSB…Goodtime hit a Falcon Arrow on Dos, but Uno made the save before the 3 count…the two teams traded some double team moves…after a sequence of big moves, all 4 men were down…Yuma was the first to his feet, and he hit an assisted ace crusher with Goodtime’s help: 1…2…NO-Dos makes the save…Dos hit a double Pele kick on the Monsters…Dos hit a monkey flip on Goodtime into the corner: 1…2…NO!…Yuma wiped out Dos with a suicide dive…Yuma then ate a Falcon Punch from Uno, which allowed the SSB to hit a Alabama Slam/Backstabber combo!: 1…2…GOODTIME MAKES THE SAVE! (“Hey, Ring of Honor, you had those guys [SSB] and you let them go. Go Fuck yourselves!” Kevin Steen on commentary)…Uno was knocked down by Yuma; Goodtime then gave Yuma a Super DVD on top of Uno: 1…2…3!

Hell of a match here, and a great debut in PWG for the Super Smash Bros…I am very glad to hear that the SSB will be brought back for the last 2011 show…the Monsters have a great connection with the crowd, and they should get another tag title shot soon…I also hope that DGUSA books both of these teams for the Wrestlereunion show
Match Rating: ***1/2

Eddie Edwards vs. T.J. Perkins
Eddie just made the semi-finals of BOLA at the last show, and TJP is making his return to PWG after not wrestling for them since 2009…most importantly, Davey Richards was on commentary and he was in-fucking-credible

Davey explains that Eddie has class because his first name matches his last name, whereas TJ’s gear makes him look like a checkers board; Davey further explains that he his confused as to whether to invite TJP to play Parcheesi or to fight…Eddie and TJP went back and forth early…Eddie got the advantage after hitting a slingshot lungblower…Davey explains that the high paced action is entertaining but that it is not very Christian; he says that Eddie’s running dropkick was known as the 1970’s Abortionator…TJP lured Eddie outside the ring and hit a suicide dive (Davey explained he peed his pants during that; 3 drops to be precise)…TJP followed that up with a springboard dropkick: 1…2…NO!…TJP hit a standing corkscrew moonsault for another two count…Eddie came back with a running knee and both men were down…they got back to their feet and traded some strikes, and both men went down again…Eddie hit a kneeling Dragonscrew Legwhip, hit a backpack chinbreaker, and locked in the Calgary Crab!…TJP crawled and made the ropes…TJP came back with his Go-2-Sleep variation, but Eddie rolled him up for another nearfall…CALGARY CRAB AGAIN!…TJP REVERSES IT INTO A TRIANGLE CHOKE!…Eddie went for the Rampage Powerbomb, but TJP rolls though only to get rolled up himself by Eddie: 1…2…3!

Very strong match here and a nice re-introduction for TJ Perkins to PWG…Once again, it must be restated how awesome Davey Richards was on commentary
Match Rating: ***1/2

El Generico vs. Rocky Romero
Generico just won BOLA three weeks before this show…Rocky is making his first PWG appearance in 2011; he last appeared at Curse of Guerrilla Island in 2010 where he defeated Ryan Taylor

Rocky and Generico went back and forth for a while…Rocky was the default heel, because of how much the fans loved Generico…eventually Rocky was able to work over Generico for a little after he went after Generico’s arm (which also sets up Rocky’s flying cross arm-breaker)…both men were on the top rope and Rocky went after Generico’s mask, which made him HATED by Reseda…Generico came back with a lariat, and then hit his no-hands sommersault plancha to get back in the match…Top Rope Crossbody from Generico: 1…2…NO!…BLUE THUNDER BOMB!: 1…2…NO!…Generico went for the Yakuza but Rocky dodged it and hit a tornado DDT…SHINING WIZARD FROM ROMERO: 1…2…NO!…Rocky followed that up with some strikes, but Generico gave him an exploder in the corner and hit the Yakuza…Generico went for the brainbust—ROLLING CROSS ARM-BREAKER FROM ROMERO, but Generico makes the ropes…Rocky went to the top rope, but Generico met him up there and hit the TURNBUCKLE BRAINBUSTER: 1…2…3!

Really good match here…Rocky was not afraid to be a dick-heel here, which made the crowd rally behind Generico even more than usual…Rocky showed a lot of charisma, and this was probably my favorite singles match that I have seen from him
Match Rating: ***3/4

The Young Bucks© (Nick Jackson & Matt Jackson) vs. The Dynasty (Joey Ryan & Scorpio Sky) [PWG Tag Titles]
The Dynasty reformed at All-Star Weekend, and they have been targeted by the Young Bucks after winning their first two matches together as a team

The Bucks jumped the Dynasty during the intros and worked over Sky to start the match…Ryan got tired of the Bucks’ shenanigans and dragged Nick to the outside so that Sky could hit a no-hands sommersault plancha on him; Ryan then speared Matt and hit a suicide dive of his own on Nick…Ryan then ran wild on the Bucks…Nick hit a tornado DDT on Ryan, and Matt then attacked Ryan with a chair on the outside when Rick Knox was distracted…the Bucks started working over Ryan after that…after being worked over for a while, Ryan superkicked Nick, which allowed Sky to make a hot tag…Sky ran wild, including hitting a belly-to-belly suplex on Matt to the outside…the two teams then went back and forth with some big moves…after about 5 million superkicks and flying knees, all 4 men were down as the crowd chanted “That was awesome!”…Ryan then speared Nick to the floor…Sky gave Matt a TKO and had the match won, but Nick pulled Rick Knox out of the ring before he could make a 3 count (PWG doesn’t really do DQ’s)…Sky then ate the tandem Tombstone, but Joey returned the favor and pulled out Rick Knox before the 3 count…the Bucks cheated some more to get back the advantage and then gave Sky More Bang For Your Buck: 1…2…3!

This was probably my favorite defense from the Bucks so far in their second reign as champs…Sky and Ryan made for great babyface challengers, and I hope that they get another match with the Bucks in the near future
Match Rating: ****

The Bucks attacked the Dynasty after the match, but Kevin Steen made the save to continue their feud…Steen called out “Jim Cornette’s Wet Dream” to get their title match started

Kevin Steen© vs. Davey Richards [PWG World Title]
This is Davey’s first shot at the title after vacating the title in 2010 (because his NJPW commitments prevented him from making 4-5 PWG shows in a row)…I read that there were some idiot fans that distracted from the enjoyment of this match

As Davey and Steen go back and forth to start the match, some fans start chanting for Chris Hero…Davey initially had the advantage, but Steen showed why his nickname is “Mr. Wrestling” and got back in the match…Davey tried to work over the knee early, but Steen came back with a Codebreaker and a cannonball splash in the corner…Davey sent Steen to the outside and hit the running kick and a suicide dive to even things up…Steen cut him off with a draping DDT, and he then hit an apron powerbomb and kneeling neckbreaker…Davey came back with some kicks (shocking)…Steen hit a pop-up powerbomb for a two count and then locked in the sharpshooter only for Davey to crawl for the ropes…Davey came right back with a dragon screw legwhip and a top rope double stomp: 1…2…NO-Ankle Lock by Richards!….Steen rolled through and grabbed an ankle lock of his own, only for Davey to roll through and lock in a sharpshooter!…Inside Cradle from Steen: 1…2…NO!…Davey came back with a superplex and Falcon Arrow: 1…2…NO!…ANKLE LOCK by DAVEY!; Steen stands up but gets caught in a German Suplex…Kawada kicks from Steen; GIANT LUGIE FROM STEEN…they start trading kicks…JAY DRILLER FROM DAVEY: 1…2…NO!…the fans got much louder after that nearfall…they end up on the ring apron, and Steen gives him a PACKAGE PILEDRIVER!…both men are down on the outside…Steen rolled Davey back in the ring and gave him a series of superkicks and a SLEEPER SUPLEX!: 1…2…NO-DAVEY KICKED OUT!…PACKAGE PILEDRIVER, transitioned into a REAR-NAKED CHOKE, and DAVEY IS KNOCKED OUT!

Very good match here, but they have had better matches in Ring of Honor…I was very glad to see Davey put Steen over clean here, as Steen is definitely the bigger star in PWG at the moment…I don’t know if the Highspots people were able to edit out the annoying fans but they were not as much as a problem as advertised
Match Rating: ***3/4

The Young Bucks attack Steen after the match, but EL GENERICO MAKES THE SAVE!…Generico points to the belt, and the fans chant to “ring the bell”…Steen kicks Generico low and grabs a microphone…Steen says that Generico has earned a title shot, and that they will meet at Steen Wolf for the title in a LADDER MATCH! The fans approve. End Scene.

Tip of the hat to Rick Knox for refereeing the entire night. That was probably not an easy task.

Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can’t Lose.

The 411: Despite not having any MOTYC, this wound up being one of PWG's most consistent shows of the year. Unlike the last 4 shows (which had several great matches on each), this show was really well organized so that each match got progressively better for the most part. I highly recommend this show.
