Views from the Hawke’s Nest: Beyond Wrestling Developmental Hell 2010 Review

11/5/2010
Night 1

Johnny Cockstrong is about to cut a promo, but he is interrupted by Denver Colorado who steals the cameraman to confront Corvis Fear. Colorado wants to know why Fear is here, and Fear says that he is just here to support Team Beyond. ACTING~!

Aeroform (Flip Kendrick & Louis Lyndon) vs. Team Beyond (Chase Burnett & Zane Silver)
Lyndon almost got a cross arm-breaker early, but Silver escaped. Flip tagged in and hit a SITTING moonsault. Yes, Flip was sitting down, and he then did a moonsault from that position. What the fuck. Aeroform were in complete control after that for a while. Silver tagged in and ran wild on Aerform. Burnett then did a double knees press to Lyndon on the apron, and immediately followed that with an Asai Twisting Press on Kendrick. Everyone ended up back in the ring and they all started trading some big moves. Kendrick hit a double backdrop driver on Team Beyond, which dropped both guys hard on the top of their heads. That looked uncomfortable. Lyndon hit Burnett with a big Dragon Suplex: 1…2…NO! Kendrick drop kicked Burnett to the outside and Burnett took a brutal flip bump to the floor. Lyndon gave Silver a palm strike and Kendrick followed that with a Shooting Star Senton: 1…2…NO! WHAT? Burnett somehow recovered and he and Silver killed Lyndon with some combo moves to get the win.

These four guys worked their asses off here and they provided a really entertaining match. Aeroform seem like a tag team that should have really broken out by now in the bigger independents. I don’t understand why at least Chikara isn’t using them more.
Match Rating: ***1/2

Johnny Cockstrong vs. Jeff Yager vs. Jarek 1:20 vs. Jack Verville
Cockstrong announces that it is legal for any of them to low blow him. Jarek then cast a spell on Cockstong to weaken his cock, but the spell did not work. Cockstrong dominated the early action with his cock-based offense. Cockstrong finally got taken down, and then all 4 men started trading some moves (Verville also occasionally danced). Yager took some nasty bumps in this match. All four men ended up on the same turnbuckle. Yager superplexed Verville, and the Cockstrong gave Jarek a Turnbuckle Schweign. Cockstrong went for a Doomsday Device, with Yager holding Jarek. Jarek fell back and dropped Yager on his head while Cockstrong landed on Verville: 1…2…3!

This match was fun but it lost momentum at various points. It may have been better if they did most of the same spots, but did the match in less time. As I said though, this match was fun.
Match Rating: **3/4

Anthony Stone cut a promo outside the building about how he loves Beyond. He tries to introduce himself to Nick Talent, but Talent blows him off. Stone says he will earn Talent’s respect in their match.

Anthony Stone vs. Nick Talent
Talent tried to hide in the ropes, but Stone dropkicked him off the apron and into the wall. Stone followed that up with a nifty slingshot double stomp onto the ring apron. Talent cut him off with a neckbreaker and a spike DDT. Talent started to get the heat after that. Stone avoided a German suplex and hit a spinebuster variation for a nearfall. Talent cut him off again though with this cool spike Mic Check. Talent started to taunt Stone and spit at him. That fired Stone up. Stone came back and hit a different spinebuster variation for another nearfall. Talent hit a jumping uppercut for a nearfall of his own. Talent was screaming about he got here all on his own. Stone avoided a superplex and hit a jumping double knee press: 1…2…3!

This was a very good mid-card match. Both guys really connected with the crowd and played their rolls well. They got the crowd invested in who won and who lost, and they did it in a fun way. Not much more you could ask for here.
Match Rating: ***

They raised each other’s hands after the match, so I guess Stone earned Talent’s respect.

Doom Patrol (Chris Dickinson & Jonny Mangue with The Pitboss) vs. Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous (Darius Carter & TJ Marconi)
The Doom Patrol is a heel stable at this time. They try to injure other wrestlers so they can’t compete. Carter wrestles in a suit to the ring, so he is automatically a winner in my book.

Doom Patrol jumped them before the bell and a big brawl broke out around the ring to start the match. Marconi quickly powerbombed Dickinson into a wall, which gave LofRaF the advantage. Dickinson was able to recover and they started to get the heat on Marconi. Carter recovered and ran wild on the Doom Patrol. Carter hit a suicide dive on Mangue, and then Marconi hit a super sidewalk slam on Dickinson: 1…2…NO! The crowd is into everything. The Doom Patrol recovered and the back and forth brawling started again. Doom Patrol eventually hit stereo brainbuster-like moves and they got a double pin to decisively win the match.

This match was a hot brawl that made Doom Patrol look dominant, but also made the underdog babyfaces look strong in defeat. Good stuff.
Match Rating: ***

“M-Dogg 20” Matt Cross vs. Zack Novak
This was before Cross was on Tough Enough. He looks like he is in great shape here, plus his beard looks awesome. Apparently the storyline was that Novak really wanted a match with Cross at the last tapings, but he had suffered injuries at the hand of Chris Dickinson the day before. Now, he is finally getting the match.

Crowd is already pumped for the match. Cross buries the setting of this match to the referee. The other wrestlers do not approve of this. Novak dominating early and Cross rolled to the outside. Cross grabs his keys and decides to leave. Cross finally returned and kicked Novak in the balls. Cross started to get the heat after that, using a standing moonsault as all classic heels are wont to do. Cross then gave Novak another low blow. That’s better. Eventually, Cross started to climb the garage wall and Novak joined. Cross slammed Novak’s head against the wall and Novak dropped to the floor. Novak came back with a Trouble in Paradise and a middle rope Pay Dirt. Cross came back with a leg lariat, inside out lariat, and a Brogue Kick: 1…2…NO! Cross hit a DVD neckbreaker and a running shooting star press: 1…2…3

This match started out great as Cross was surprisingly great at being a cocky heel who thought he was better than Beyond. At some point though, the match just stopped working well and it only felt like a series of moves towards the end.
Match Rating: **1/2

Out of nowhere, The Doom Patrol started to just tear apart Denver Colorado and made him bleed with a fork. Colorado actually sold this pretty well. Dickinson decided that they needed to strip Colorado, which revealed a “Choose Death” shirt (the shirt of The Necro Butcher) underneath his hockey jersey. Finally, Novak and Team Beyond ran in to save Colorado. All things considered, this beat down worked fairly well. The only weird part (and this happens with all the beat downs in Beyond) is that there were about 2 dozen wrestlers in the crowd and it took forever for anybody to save Colorado. That just seems awkward to me.

Night 2

Chris Dickinson starts Night 2 with a promo in Denver Colorado’s bedroom. Dickinson says he is going to watch the video of him cutting up Colorado over and over again. Dickinson says Colorado underestimated him, and that there is a long history of him destroying people who underestimate him.

Jarek 1:20 vs. KJ Crush
Jarek got the advantage early, so Crush rolled to the outside and received “You’ve got asthma” chants. Crush got back in the ring and used his size to get the advantage on Jarek. Crush started to get the heat after that. Crush used a sweet uranagi backbreaker, and then used the ropes as leverage in an abdominal stretch. Crush locked in a Boston Crab on the outside of the ring. Crush followed that with a snapmare driver onto the steel steps! Crush rolled Jarek back into and ring and went for a moonsault, but Jarek rolled out of the way (got a huge pop). Jarek then hit a springboard DDT, and got his playing cards. Crush stole the cards, but that allowed Jarek to hit a superkick: 1…2…NO! Jarek went for a split-legged moonsault, but Crush got his knees up. Both men went to the top rope, and Crush tried to give Jarek an exploder to the floor. Jarek escaped and hit a super hurricanranna! Crush cut him off with an exploder into the turnbuckle. Both men have slowed down and appeared exhausted. Jarek avoided an Alabama Slam on a chair, and then hit a Canadian Destroyer onto the chair!

These two guys went out and tried to steal the show. They really put together a well-structured match that spaced out the bigger spots in a good way. Both men have a real talent for connecting with the crowd (even a crowd of wrestlers), and they both seem ready to get more opportunities in independent wrestling.
Match Rating: ***1/4

The Pitboss (w/Jonny Mangue vs. Josh Emanuel
The Pitboss is the manager/third member of the Doom Patrol along with Chris Dickinson and Jonny Mangue. This is my first time seeing Josh Emanuel.

Mangue distracted Emanuel and Pitboss jumped him from behind to start the match. Pitboss was pounding on Emanuel in the corner, but Emanuel locked him in a Corner Boston Crab out of nowhere. Pitboss dropped to the floor after the referee made the 5 count. Mangue distracted Emanuel again, and that allowed The Pitboss regain control of the match. Emanuel got a cross armbreaker but Pitboss escaped. Pitboss got a nearfall on a bridging German suplex, but Emanuel came back with a back breaker. Emanuel was going for a headlock driver, but Pitboss escaped and hit a dominator: 1…2…3

These two were green as grass, but the dynamic of any wrestler taking on the numbers game of the Doom Patrol worked with the crowd. Pitboss loses a lot of his presence with regular wrestling gear, and I am glad that he has changed that since this match. Pitboss’s in-ring improvement since this match is quite evident.
Match Rating: **1/4

Chris Dickinson (w/ The Pitboss) vs. Jeff Yager
Yager had the advantage early but Dickinson cut him off with a German suplex. Dickinson worked Yager over after that. Yager hit a Blue Thunder bomb out of nowhere, which got a nearfall. Yager followed that with a Gibson Driver for another nearfall. Dickinson killed him with a German suplex. Yager came back with an exploder suplex, but Dickinson came back with some strikes. Yager then hit a BRUTAL forearm that caused the crowd to explode. Both men ended up on the top tope. Pitboss distracted the ref and Dickinson low blowed Yager…SUPER BURNING HAMMER! It’s academic: 1…2…3

The Doom Patrol is so hated that pretty much every match they are in at this point is going to be fun (yes, even a Pitboss match). Dickinson did his usual psycho strikes and suplexes, and Yager did his usual wackiness. Overall, this was a good time.
Match Rating: ***

Necro Butcher vs. Jonny Mangue
Necro is super over with everyone. He immediately picks up the ring stairs and threatens to throw them at the Doom Patrol. Necro tries to start the match with a chair, but Mangue refuses to get into the ring until Necro drops the chair. Mangue was trying to avoid Necro early, but a Pitboss distraction allowed Mangue to get some offense in. Necro sent Mangue into a COUCH, to get back the advantage. They then brawled all over the inside and the outside of the building. Necro was in complete control until Pitboss distracted him again. Mangue hit Necro’s punching hand with a chair and then went after that hand some more. Mangue was dominating the match after that. Necro then just hit a low blow and nailed a big lariat to start his comeback. Necro got a chair and threw it in Pitboss’s face. TIGER DRIVER: 1…2…DICKINSON PULLS OUT THE REFEREE! Dickinson and Mangue double teamed Necro down but the ref was still out. Dickinson went to use the chair but Denver Colorado pulled down Dickinson, which allowed Necro to roll up Mangue: 1…2…3!

This was one of the more entertaining Necro matches that I have seen in a while: The Doom Patrol vs. valiant babyface dynamic worked again. Beyond actually uses Necro perfectly because Necro’s gimmick and style is more effective as a ‘special attraction’ instead of being a full-time roster member that wrestles on each and every single show (the downfall of his time in ROH in my opinion).
Match Rating: ***

Denver Colorado and Necro Butcher chased The Doom Patrol away with chairs. Generally, having a non-wrestler (who is the actual promoter) physically get involved and actually get some semblance of revenge himself is not a great idea, but it did make sense in terms of the larger Doom Patrol vs. Beyond Wrestling story. Plus, Denver had a chair and Necro at his side, so The Doom Patrol would have been stupid to attack him.

Corvis Fear & Zack Novak vs. Anthony Stone & Nick Talent
Talent was using his iPad, which delayed the match. Fear took the iPad and threatened to break it but Stone saved the iPad. A wrestling match broke out, shortly thereafter. Stone and Talent cut them off on an attempted backpack suicide dive, and they worked over Fear for a while. Novak saved Fear from further double teaming, and he got some offense in on Talent. Talent and Stone cut them off again though and went to work on Novak this time. Fear made a blind tag and he and Novak did an atomic drop-deadlift German suplex combo on Stone. Talent and Stone cut them off again and got a couple of nearfalls on Fear and Novak. Fear and Novak came back with some trademark creative moves from Fear, which got them some nearfalls. The crowd was going nuts for all of this. Finally, Talent gave Fear Sole Food, and then Stone gave both Fear and Novak a top rope double knee smash to put them away.

This was very fun main event. All four men busted their asses and put out a match that the crowd loved. Corvis Fear is one of the more polished guys that never broke out in the indies in the last ten years. He’s got great timing in the ring and he has a great presence. I wish he didn’t retire.
Match Rating: ***1/4

Denver Colorado tried to give an end of show speech to thank all off the wrestlers, but The Doom Patrol ran in. Corvis Fear, Zack Novak, and Chase Burnett made the save and Colorado ran away. All 6 men brawled around the ring. Burnett wiped out Mangue with a 450 to the floor. In a nice touch, Dickinson was wearing the hockey jersey that he stripped off Colorado the night before. The brawl went for a long time, and was basically just an unsanctioned 6-man match. The fight spilled to the outside of the building. The last shot was Dickinson attacking Colorado (who was also the camera man). Cut to black. End scene.

Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can’t Lose.

The 411: Another very consistent DVD release from Beyond Wrestling, as there was something to like about every match on the show. The standout match was probably the Aeroform vs. Team Beyond Match, which set the positive energy for the whole weekend. The cameos from Matt Cross and Necro Butcher were successful (but not outstanding), and Necro especially would be great to have back as a special attraction down the line. If you have never seen Beyond before, I definitely recommend that you check out this DVD as it provides a lot of good matches and that great Beyond Wrestling environment.
