Views from the Hawke’s Nest: Wrestling is Fun! 4

July 13, 2012
Allentown, PA

Commentators: Mike Quackenbush, Bryce Remsburg, Gavin Loudspeaker, Leonard F. Chikarason, & Dasher Hatfield

Kobald vs. Dasher Hatfield
Dasher has been one of my favorite Chikara performers in 2012. Kobald has improved a lot, but he needs to start having stronger matches.

Kobald got the toilet paper treatment. Dasher said hello to Leslie Butterscotch and Avery Bonsberry, who were in the stands. Dasher was in control early. Dasher hit three Snake Eyes in a row, but Kobald avoided a fourth one and cut Dasher off with a spear. Kobald got the heat after that. Dasher eventually stopped Kobald’s offense, and he hit a jackhammer for a nearfall. Dasher then dropped Kobald, chest first, on all four turnbuckles. Kobald came back with a bridging back suplex for a nearfall. Dasher then hit the Suicide Squeeze: 1…2…3!

This was a solid opener. They kept it simple, but I was pretty much entertained by the whole match. Dasher Hatfield pretty much has nothing but fun matches these days.
Match Rating: **1/4

Mr. Touchdown and Veronica came out after the match. Touchdown briefly celebrated with Dasher, but he then sent him out of the ring. Touchdown said he was supposed to have a match with “Mike Quackennerd.” Quack said his wrist is still not full heeled, and he wants to be 100% for when he takes out Touchdown because he respects Touchdown’s ability just that much. Quack says Touchdown will be wrestling Green Ant instead tonight. Veronica ran down Quack some more.

Knight Eye for the Pirate Guy (Jolly Roger & Lance Steel) vs. The Batiri (Obariyon & Kodama)
Roger tied Obariyon up in a knot, and Kodama and Steel had to roll him out of the ring. The Batiri tried punching Steel in his armor, but all they accomplished was damage to themselves. Steel and Roger hit the Joust! They then wiped out the Batiri with stereo tope suicidas. Back in the ring, Obariyon cut off Steel with a knee to the face. The rudos got the heat on Steel for a while. The Batiri tried doing some jousting, but they failed. Roger tagged in and ran wild. Roger hit a swinging fisherman neckbreaker. Donovan Morgan reference by Quack on commentary. Obariyon removed Steel’s enchanted body armor, and Kodama hit Steel with the spinebuster out of the fireman’s carry position: 1…2…3!

This was a fun match with both teams playing their roles well. There were a couple of moments where things didn’t go too smoothly. Overall though, I enjoyed this quite a bit, and I would like to see Roger and Steel get more opportunities in WiF! and Chikara going forward.
Match Rating: **1/2

Soldier Ant vs. Johnny Ego
This is my first time seeing Ego. Ego defeated Fire Ant at a previous Wrestling is Fun! show.

Ego went after Soldier Ant’s mask early, which allowed Ego to cut off Soldier Ant with a Kitchen Sink. Ego worked him over for a while after that. Ego used several rudo tactics while he worked over Soldier Ant. Eventually, Soldier Ant avoided a diving cross-body, and he made a big comeback after that. They brawled on the floor for a bit. Ego got the advantage back for a bit. Ego was able to turn Soldier Ant’s mask around so that he was blind, and Ego was then able to hit a twister Fisherman buster: 1…2…3!

This was a solid match. Much like the rest of the show, they kept things simple, but they were effective in everything they did. I like that WiF! is using the more established Chikara guy to put over the newcomer, who may be appearing in Chikara one day.
Match Rating: **1/2

Jaka vs. Jigsaw
Jaka is a new character in the WiF! universe. He used to be known as Jonny Mangue, but he got a new name for WiF! It still says Mangue on his gear, so it’s not like I’m breaking some super serial wrestling secret by writing that. Jaka is doing a “savage Samoan” gimmick, which is obviously not ideal, but I’ll wait to see what they do with it long term before I judge it too harshly.

Jigsaw hit a running double stomp for an early nearfall. Jaka came back with a series of headbutts and kicks. That cut Jigsaw off, and Jaka worked him over after that. Jaka locked in a nerve pinch, which is my least favorite move in professional wrestling. Not to be confused with the CLAW, which is the greatest move in professional wrestling. Jigsaw managed to hit a middle rope missile dropkick to slow Jaka down. Jigsaw hit a series of strikes and a Michinoku Driver: 1…2…NO! Jigsaw called for the Double Stomp, but Jaka avoided and hit a Baldo Bomb: 1…2…NO! Jigsaw avoided a rolling senton and then hit a superkick: 1…2…NO! Jigsaw tried for a super brainbuster, but Jaka hit him in the throat. Jaka then hit a Superfly Splash: 1…2…3!

This was the best match of the show so far. Much like the last match, I was really glad to see a Chikara regular be used to put over a new guy. Jaka has got a lot of potential, and I hope they manage to do something more with him than just the “savage Samoan” stuff sooner, rather than later.
Match Rating: ***

STIGMA vs. Grizzly Redwood
I haven’t seen STIGMA since he got phased out of Chikara’s regular roster. Grizzly needs to be booked more by Chikara.

STIGMA cut Grizzly off with a cradle backbreaker early on. STIGMA worked him over for a while. Grizzly managed to get a submission at one point, but STIGMA reversed it into a sidewalk slam for a nearfall. Grizzly came back with some punches and a springboard cross-body: 1…2…NO! DOWN COME THE SUSPENDERS! STIGMA caught Grizzly with a German suplex. Grizzly avoided a charge in the corner and got a schoolboy: 1…2…3!

This match reminded me of the opener. It wasn’t bad or anything, but it definitely stopped the quality momentum that the show had been gradually gathering from match to match.
Match Rating: **

Frightmare vs. Ophidian
Ophidian pounced on Frightmare at the bell. This was Frightmare’s first singles match after his serious leg injury. Frightmare briefly came back, but Ophidian was able to cut him off by going after Frightmare’s neck and left arm. Ophidian continued to go after that arm. Ophidian was in full control for a while. Ophidian went for a Meteora, but Frightmare avoided it and then hit and enzuigiri. Frightmare hit a running spike Ace Crusher: 1…2…NO! Ophidian came back with his big kick for a nearfall of his own. Ophidian then got the Ophidian Death Grip, but Frightmare escaped only to run into a powerbomb. Ophidian followed that up with a Meteora: 1…2…NO! Ophidian Death Grip! Frightmare escaped and hit a Yakuza Kick: 1…2…NO! Frightmare killed him with a spike hurricanrana: 1…2…FOOT ON THE ROPES! Ophidian hit the Divorce Court, and then locked in the Ophidian Death Grip again! Frightmare tapped out.

This match was pretty disappointing as a lot of Ophidian singles matches have been this year. The crowds still don’t seem to be really invested in hating Ophidian, and since he controlled the majority of the match, this match just wasn’t as much “fun” as I would have guessed. A year ago, this match could have been awesome.
Match Rating: **1/2

Sydney Bakabella interrupted Gavin Loudspeaker. He discussed the accolades of The Devastation Corporation, and that all the great territories are trying to get the Corporation for their events. Apparently the Corporation is going to have a match tonight.

The Devastation Corporation (Blaster McMassive & Max Smashmaster) vs. 2 Dudes
The jobbers tried to attack the Corporation at the bell, but it was a fruitless endeavor. The Corporation quickly overpowered them and hit their finisher: 1…2…3!

The Devastation Corporation rule.
Match Rating: SQUASH

Green Ant© vs. Mr. Touchdown (w/ Veronica) [The Wrestling is Fun! Championship Banana]
These two are competing for a Banana. As in, the fruit. WRESTLING IS FUN!

Veronica jumped up on the apron early, but it didn’t lead to anything significant. Touchdown ended up on the floor, and Green Ant took him out with a tope suicida. Back in the ring, Green Ant hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for a nearfall. Shortly thereafter, Touchdown caused Green Ant to crash into a turnbuckle, and that allowed Mr. Touchdown an opportunity to get the heat. At one point, Veronica was biting Green Ant’s antenna. Green Ant managed to hit a running headbutt to the chest, but Touchdown came back with a T-Bone suplex. Touchdown got a few nearfalls after that; Green Ant would not stay down. Green Ant finally caught Touchdown with a superkick, which almost knocked out Green Ant. Green Ant hit an arm trap Drunk Slam: 1…2…NO! Green Ant then locked in a Cloverleaf! Veronica helped Touchdown get to the ropes. Touchdown hit the Funplex (he couldn’t connect on the Ace Crusher): 1…2…NO! Green Ant hit his triple jump dropkick. Touchdown caught him with a running spinebuster: 1…2…NO! Veronica jumped up on the apron, which allowed Touchdown to hit Green Ant with his helmet: 1…2…3!!!

This match was a very good main event to cap off this fairly consistent show. Along with Tim Donst, I consider these two guys the future of the Chikara singles division. Both of these men would make for a great Grand Champion one day. Fighting over a banana will have to do for now though.

The 411: While I would say that I enjoyed this show a lot, I can't in good faith suggest in any way that you have to or even should buy this show. If you watch it, you will have a good time, but I don't think it's worth the money. So basically, if you have some disposable income, throw SMV and WiF! some bones for it. If you don't have an disposable income, wait for the free WiF! iPPV on November 17th. You can support Wrestling is Fun! by buying this show as a $11.99 MP4 or as a $9.99 VOD.
