Views from the Hawke’s Nest: 2CW The Big Event 2012

Dick Justice, Pete D Order, & The Beast vs. Kage & The Killer Steves (Steve Kruz & Steve McKenzie)
This match originally began as a tag match, but soon Kage and Beast joined in. Thus, we have a trios match.

The teams went back and forth to start with some uninspired action (to say the least). Eventually, one of the Steves was cut off. It was the Steve with long hair. The heels got the heat on him for a while. Eventually, long hair Steve gave mullet heel a back elbow and a mafia kick. Kage tagged in and ran wild. Eventually, Kage gave The Beast a very weak World’s Strongest Slam: 1…2…3

I never need to see any of these guys wrestle ever again, but I guess I’m going to have to if I’m going to keep reviewing 2CW DVDs.
Match Rating: ½*

Ted DiBiase came out to the ring. He got a nice reception from the outdoor venue crowd. DiBiase said he wanted to do a Fifteen Pushup Challenge. Matt Milan came out to take on the challenge. Did he say 15 or 50? DiBiase said he failed and didn’t get any money. DiBiase left the ring.

Matt Milan vs. Cheech vs. Loca Vida vs. Colin Delaney
Cheech threw Colin’s tallboy into the crowd. Colin retrieved it and finished his refreshing beverage. Fans chanted “Intervention.” This match is being contested under tag rules, which hopefully means it’s an elimination match. Ok, they are using lucha tag rules. Colin went for a dive on Milan, but Cheech broke it up. Cheech and Milan worked over Colin for a while. Colin managed to send Milan to the floor, and he then hit him with a tope suicida. Cheech hit Colin with a slingshot plancha. Vida then wiped them out with a somersault plancha. They did a tower of doom spot that they botched and nearly killed themselves on. The crowd still chanted “2CW!” Cheech hit Vida with a Gory Bomb. Vida hit Cheech with a weird X-Factor. Colin hit Cheech with a diving cutter. Milan hit Colin with a German suplex and the Five Star Suplex: 1…2…3

This match was solid. Everyone got some shit in, and they kept the action lively (if uninspired). Colin Delaney was starting to look sharper around this time, even if he (apparently) hadn’t quit drinking yet.
Match Rating: **1/2

Super Smash Bros. (Player Uno & Stupefied)© vs. First Class (Kevin Graham & Mike Van Slyke) [2CW Tag Championships]
SSB were pretty much in complete control early on. Eventually, First Class used some sneaky, numbers game tactics to cut off Stupefied. First Class got the heat on Stupefied after that. Stupefied was eventually able to hit the double Pele on First Class. Uno tagged in and ran wild. First Class came back on Uno. They had Uno pinned, but Stupefied made the save. Uno speared Slyke. Graham and Stupefied went at it. Falcon Punch from Uno on Graham. Stupefied then hit Slyke with a corkscrew plancha. SSB then hit Graham with FATALITY: 1…2…3

This was a good tag title defense for the SSB. It wasn’t on the level of SSB’s matches in PWG, but no one could justifiably expect it to be. I love that 2CW is pushing Steen and SSB as their champions. First Class don’t excite me, but they are clearly getting better.
Match Rating: ***

Slyck Wagner Brown vs. Sean Carr
Wagner is boring. Carr does some cool flips.

Carr hit a step-up enzuigiri for an early nearfall, Wagner came back with a boot to the face to cut him off. Wagner got the heat after that. Cue zzzzzzzzz. Carr eventually came back with a Final Cut, which got him a nearfall. Carr hit a Trouble in Paradise, and he then hit a Finlay Roll. Carr hit a middle rope moonsault for a nearfall. They traded some pinning combinations. Wagner hit a Rough Ryder: 1…2…NO! Carr came back with a series of kicks. Carr then hit a super hurricanrana. Ref bump. Carr hit a superkick for a phantom pinfall. Wagner gave Carr a low blow and then a reverse iconoclasm: 1…2…3.

Sean Carr is such a good babyface that his matches with the sinfully boring Wagner Brown become passable. The crowd did not appreciate Wagner winning, which probably justifies him being booked strong in 2CW. He’s just not a performer that interests me. I need to watch more Sean Carr.
Match Rating: **3/4

Masada vs. Jay Freddie
They went back and forth at the start, with neither man getting a decisive advantage. I really dig Masada when he just wrestles instead of having plunder matches. Freddie went for a tope suicida, but Masada blocked it with a forearm. Masada worked Freddie over on the outside. Masada brought Freddie back into the ring to get the heat. Freddie eventually came back and got a couple of pinning combinations for nearfalls. Masada went to the top rope. Freddie tried repeatedly to get a superplex. Masada kept fighting him off, but eventually, Freddie was able to get that superplex. Freddie then hit a tope suicida and a missile dropkick. Freddie then hit a stunner and a German suplex. Masada came back with a lariat for a nearfall. Freddie came back with a series of a strikes and an arm-trap back suplex. Freddie then got a nearfall with a rolling forearm. Freddie then hit a Tombstone: 1…2…NO! Masada came back with a brainbuster: 1…2…NO! The crowd was completely behind Freddie at this point. Masada then hit a powerbomb: 1…2…NO! Masada went for another powerbomb, but Freddie reversed it into a sunset flip pin: 1…2…3!

This match exceeded my modest expectations. I genuinely enjoy Masada when he just goes out there and wrestles (like he did here). He’s got such a presence about him. I’ve never seen Masada have a great match, but I’ve also never seen him have a shitty match. Frankly, I’m disappointed that Masada lost, because I would have loved to see Masada vs. Steen for the 2CW title. With that in mind, the crowd is very into Jay Freddie (who is a good talent).

Jason Axe vs. Isys Ephex [Bullrope Match]
Both guys immediately started slugging it out. They ended up on the floor. Axe’s forehead got busted open after he got sent into the ringpost. They made their way back to the ring where Axe hit a spinebuster to cut Ephex off. Axe was in control for a while after that. Ephex became a bloody mess. Axe was still bleeding out of his forehead, but it was nowhere near the amount of blood that Ephex’s head was squirting out. Axe placed Ephex on the apron and then choked him from the ring. Ephex fought back and hit a suplex. Ephex touched three of the turnbuckles and then hit a Vertebreaker. Ephex easily touched the fourth turnbuckle to pick up the victory.

I’m not a fan of either of these two guys, but they did a good job of selling their hatred in this match to make the blood and guts appropriate. I think the Bullrope stipulation was stupid (as it almost always is), and I think a Dog Collar stitpulation would have been more appropriate.
Match Rating: ***

Bin Hamin, 2CW’s resident archaic and racist Middle Eastern character designed to get heat for simply being Middle Eastern, came out. Hamin attacked the ring announcer like last month. The 2CW owner (I believe that’s who he is. There’s no commentary, so I’m not sure) came out and challenged Hamin to a fight. Hamin attacked him his flag pole. Zachary Springate III did a run-in and chased Hamin off. THIS IS SUCH SHINDY AWFUL BULLSHIT! The ring announcer said, “Enough is enough with this crap.” I agree. Springate refused to leave the ring even though the storyline is apparently that he’s not medically cleared to compete. Springate eventually left. 2CW, this Bin Hamin stuff is awful and a stain on professional wrestling. It makes Zeb Colter look subtle. Please stop.

Eddie “Eddie Edwards” Edwards vs. Chuck Taylor
This is a rare ROH vs. DGUSA/Evolve matchup that no one would probably care about at all on the surface. Let’s see what they put together. I’m optimistic.

The crowd got on Taylor’s case early on. I think they were saying he had a small penis, but I’m not entirely sure. Eddie got a nearfall with a running punt to the chest. They went to the floor. Eddie had the fans hold Chuck so that he could deliver some brutal chops and a sack tap. Taylor came back with a belly-to-belly suplex. Chuck Taylor had control of the match after that, and he got the heat on Eddie. Eddie came back with a Mafia kick, which sent Chuck to the floor. Eddie then hit Chuck with a tope suicida. Eddie then got a nearfall with a missile dropkick. Chuck came back with a Sole Food, but then Eddie came right back with a Funplex: 1…2…NO! Eddie went for a backpack chinbreaker, but Chuck avoided it and hit a middle rope blockbuster: 1…2…NO! Chuck then hit a Rock Bottom and a Lionsault: 1…2…NO! Chuck went for a moonsault, but Eddie avoided it. Eddie then hit the diving Codebreaker for a nearfall. Eddie transitioned from there into a single leg crab. Chuck escaped, but Eddie then caught him in a pinning combination: 1…2…3!

This was a super fun match between two guys who had surprisingly good chemistry. They didn’t do anything crazy, but they kept me and the crowd engaged the whole time. I would actually be very interested in a rematch.
Match Rating: ***1/4

Kevin Steen© vs. Sami Callihan [2CW Heavyweight Champion]
Sami was making his entrance along the foul line (Did I mention this show happened on a baseball field?) when Steen attacked Sami. They started brawling on the field. They made their way to the ringside area, where they continued to brawl. Steen sent Sami into a ringpost, crotch first. Sami eventually was able to drop Steen on the apron. They finally got into the ring and the bell rang. So, I guess the match officially starts now.

Sami rained down some forearms. Steen managed to cut Sami off shortly after that though. Steen proceeded to work over Sami. Steen was in control for a while. Sami was finally able to come back with an enzuigiri. Sami then went for the trio of three face washes. Steen, of course, didn’t get hit with the third attempt, but he still ate a Brogue Kick to the arm from Sami. Sami then hit an Ace Crusher and a Silverking Lariat. Sami called for a tope, but Steen came back with a pop-up powerbomb. Steen went for a superplex. Sami tried to reverse it into a powerbomb, but Steen avoided that. Sami then superkicked Steen’s knee. Steen started jawing with the crowd. Sami came back with a saito suplex and a Sliding D. Sami went for a Superfly Splash, but Steen got his knees up. Steen then hit a Stunner and a chokeslam: 1…2…NO! Steen then hit a low blow and a package piledriver: 1…2…3!

These two just have nothing but fun matches together. I can’t imagine that I will ever get sick of them being in the same match. While I probably enjoyed their PWG match slightly more, this was still really good and managed to keep Steen’s heel champion run going strong. The finish wasn’t super inspired, but I think it fits with the character Steen is portraying in 2CW. Good stuff.
Match Rating: ***1/2

Ted DiBiase came out again. I think he put the fans over. Muscles Marcos interrupted DiBiase. Marcos asked for a handshake. DiBiase wouldn’t give it to him. Marcos accused DiBiase of being broke. Marcos said DiBiase owed him money, but that since he didn’t have any money, he would take DiBiase’s pride. DiBiase offered him a free shot. DiBiase blocked the punch, punched out Marcos, and then performed the Million Dollar Dream. The crowd popped. This should have been a DVD bonus feature instead of being placed within the proper show.

Mickie James vs. Rachel Summerlyn

Mickie James vs Rachel Summerlyn 7.13.12 from 2CW Squared Circle Wrestling on Vimeo.

Both of them start the match working super serial. James was going after Summerlyn’s left arm. Summerlyn couldn’t get any offense in until she hit a shoulder block. Summerlyn then hit a scoop slam. James got back in control of the match though, and she proceeded to work over Summerlyn. James took off her belt to whip Summerlyn, but the ref took the belt away. This match has been so super serial that they forgot to make the match fun. James went back to town on Summerlyn’s left arm, and she then started to berate Summerlyn. Summerlyn eventually escaped an arm submission and made a big comeback. She got a nearfall on James with a Fisherman neckbreaker. Summerlyn then hit a vertical suplex, which she then immediately transitioned to a guillotine choke. James escaped and delivered some strikes to Summerlyn’s back. Summerlyn avoided a top rope Thesz Pres and James’s big DDT. Summerlyn then hit a big Yakuza Kick: 1…2….3

This was a really solid main event. James didn’t phone in the performance at all, and she instead seemed out to prove that she can work a more independent style match (as opposed to a five minute TV style match). Summerlyn was her usual good self, and I’m glad to see her win.

The 411: This was easily my favorite 2CW DVD yet, and I definitely recommend that you pick it up. With the exception of the opener, there was something of value on every match on this show. 2CW has a great environment, and if they keep producing shows of this quality, I think they are going to get some momentum in terms of expanding their fanbase. You can support 2CW by purchasing this DVD.
