Lest We Forget: WWE Unforgiven 2006

WWE Unforgiven 2006
From the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
September 17, 2006

The opening video shows more of the usual D-X/McMahon family hijinx, hyping up tonight’s Hell in a Cell that also included Big Show. It then moves on to the TLC match between Edge and John Cena for the WWE Championship, going over how it’s a match Cena has never been in and Edge has never lost. This was an alright way to welcome in the fans.

PYRO!

Intercontinental Championship Match: Johnny Nitro(c) w/ Melina vs. Jeff Hardy

During Nitro’s entrance, Jim Ross points out that he doesn’t like the way Nitro carries the belt in his waistband. This was a nice touch to make it seem like the belt is important and that Nitro is degrading it. It’s the little things, people. Hardy gets a big ovation, and it is noted that he had a “previously undiscussed” three year absence. “Hardy!” chants from the crowd before the opening bell. Nitro hits an arm drag, but the crowd is not impressed with a loud, “Nitro sucks!” chant. Hardy gets an arm drag on the next exchange. Nitro takes control, but Hardy gets a backslide for two and then scores with his double legdrop. Nitro takes a powder on the floor. Nitro pounds away on Hardy. Hardy dropkicks Nitro into the corner. Hardy follows up with a ten punch and a swinging dropkick. Hardy goes up top, but Nitro rolls out to the floor. Hardy sees an opening and knocks Nitro to the ground with a baseball slide through the bottom and middle rope! Hardy runs the guardrail and takes out Nitro with a clothesline! Back inside, Hardy goes up top, but Nitro LEAPS AND DROPKICKS HIM OFF OF THE TOP ROPE DOWN TO THE MAT! That was creative and looked really cool. Nitro starts to target the knee of Hardy. Hardy tries to fight his way back into the match-up, but Nitro ducks an enzugiri and further works over the knee before covering for two. Nitro scores with numerous kicks to the leg, and then covers again for two. Hardy’s knee gives out while trying to run the ropes, and Nitro capitalizes even more. Nitro drapes Hardy’s leg outside the ring, and slingshots over the top rope with an axe-handle to the back of his calf. Nitro covers for two yet again. Nitro continues to work over Hardy’s knee, much to the dismay of the crowd. Nitro crushes Hardy’s knee by placing it on the second rope and dropping all of his weight on it. Nitro applies a hold to Hardy’s foot, but Hardy fights out and gets to his feet. Nitro ducks a clothesline and scores with a chopblock. Nitro scales the buckles, and goes for a CORKSCREW MOONSAULT, BUT HARDY MOVES OUT OF THE WAY! Hardy manages to regain control with a series of clotheslines. Nitro hits a kick to the gut and goes for a neckbreaker, but Hardy counters out. Hardy blocks a back suplex and scores with a back elbow. WHISPER IN THE WIND! ONE, TWO, NO! Nitro takes over and goes for a top rope hurricanrana, but Hardy holds on and Nitro crashes to the mat! SWANTON BOMB! Hardy crawls over and makes the cover- ONE, TWO, THRE-NITRO GETS HIS FOOT ON THE ROPE! Nitro goes for a shinbreaker, and Hardy counters for a sunset flip, but Nitro rolls through. Nitro goes back to the knee, but Hardy hits a mule-kick. Hardy goes for the Twist of Fate, but Nitro counters out and gets a leg lock! Hardy inches toward the ropes, but Nitro re-applies the hold in the center of the ring! Hardy rolls the hold over and gets to the ropes! Nitro is growing frustrated. Nitro tries to go back to the hold, and Melina gets up on the apron. Hardy kicks Nitro into Melina and gets a school boy! ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! Morrison goes up top and tries for a hurricanrana, but HARDY POWERBOMBS HIM! Hardy tries to head up top, but Melina nails him with her boot! ONE, TWO, THREE! Johnny Nitro retains at 17:38!

Winner: Johnny Nitro
This was a well-worked opening contest. Nitro did a good job of playing the heel, grounding the fan favorite. Hardy’s babyface offense rallied the crowd behind him, and the fans were upset when Melina cost him the match. 1 for 1.

A behind-the-scenes look at The Marine is shown.

The General Manager of Smackdown Teddy Long is in the house, because if John Cena loses tonight, he will be headed to the blue brand.

Backstage, Matt Hardy consoles his brother after his lose. Lita shows up and rips on both guys. She tells Matt to watch her beat Lita tonight, and then watch Edge beat John Cena. She tells Hardy that Edge is going to send Cena packing, just like he did to Matt Hardy.

Umaga w/ Armando Alejandro Estrada vs. Kane

The commentators claim this to be Umaga’s pay-per-view debut, but in fact, it is not, as he beat Eugene at Vengeance. Armando does his usual shtick before the match, which was great. He says that Umaga is the only real monster in WWE. Kane lights up The Samoan Bulldozer with punches, but Umaga fights his way back with an eye-rake. However, Kane catches him coming off of the ropes with a boot, though Umaga manages to stay on his feet. Kane tries to follow up with another, but Umaga nails him with a spinning heel kick! The action spills out to the floor, where Armando distracts Kane. This allows Umaga to drop Kane with a flatliner on the floor! Umaga takes the action back inside and tacks on a headbutt. Kane is seated in the corner, and UMAGA PLASTERS HIM WITH A RUNNING HIP ATTACK! Umaga goes for the Samoan Spike, but Kane cuts him off. The big men exchange hands, and Umaga quickly takes back over. Kane catches Umaga charging with a boot. Kane beats the tar out of Umaga with punches in the corner, and then sends him into the turnbuckle. Kane hits two straight corner clotheslines, and then one in the center of the ring, but he can’t drop Umaga. Kane hits the ropes but Umaga catches him with a Samoan Drop. Umaga goes to the second rope for a Super Samoan Spike, but Kane evades it. Kane goes up top and hits a flying clothesline! The crowd is really into this one. Kane calls for the Chokeslam. GOOZLE! Umaga tries to hit the Samoan Spike to get out of it, but Kane counters. Umaga comes off the ropes, but Kane THROWS HIM TO THE FLOOR WITH A BELLY TO BELLY! On the outside, Kane CLOTHESLINES UMAGA OVER THE BARRICADE! The two brawl through the crowd, and both men are counted out at 7:02.

Double Count Out
I know a lot of people on the IWC think that everything involving big guys is horrible, but if you give this match a chance, you won’t be disappointed, even with the non-finish. The action was hard-hitting and intense. Umaga was one of the most entertaining guys around at this time, and it’s a shame his life and career were cut short. 2 for 2.

Both men continue to brawl up the stage and to the back.

We cut to Vince and Shane, who are commemorating a recent victory. Shane says he and Big Show will take care of business, and that Vince can make the cover. Vince says that unlike Canada, he doesn’t depend on allies to do his bidding for him. Vince ends by saying that D-X has no chance in hell.

WWE Tag Team Title Match: The Spirit Squad (Kenny and Mikey)(c) vs. The Highlanders

Oh my God, remember The Highlanders?! Even though Kenny and Mikey are competing, Johnny and Nicky are wearing the belts. It’s kind of funny that the only one who was really hyped was Kenny, but it was Nicky, who barely got any attention, that went on to be a World Heavyweight Champion. Rory starts it off by locking up with Mikey, and he immediately gets a sunset flip, but to no avail. Mikey backs Rory into the corner and scores with a back elbow, but misses when he charges him in the corner. Robby puts his head up, and Rory sends Mike into him. Rory covers for two. Rory tags in Roby by smacking him in the head. Robby quickly tags in Rory, who comes crashing off of the second rope onto Mikey’s wrenched arm. Robby tags back in and does the same thing, this time covering for two. Kenny tags in but is immediately met with a back body drop and a scoop slam. Rory tags in and sends Robby into Kenny with a battering ram. Robby tags in and they do the same thing, this time with Rory as the battering ram. Rory tags back in and covers for two. Robby tags in (again), but Kenny holds the ropes on a whip to tag in Mikey, who falls victim to a double team move for two. Mike sends Robby into the corner and pounds away before tagging in Kenny. Robby fights off Kenny and nails a dropkick. Robby goes for a suicide dive, but KENNY ROLLS INSIDE AND ROBBY LANDS FACE FIRST ON THE FLOOR! OUCH. Nicky and Johnny send Robby into a clothesline from Mikey, who sends him back inside. Kenny covers for two and tags in Mikey, who he whips into Robby for a clothesline that also get two. Mikey drapes Robby over the top rope and kicks away at him. Mikey covers for two and tags in Kenny. Kenny launches Mikey into a moonsault, then covers for two. Kenny applies a chinlock. Kenny hits a clothesline for the twelve thousandth two count of the match. Mikey tags in, and Kenny launches him into a corner splash for two. Mikey slaps on a front facelock. Robby fights up, but Mikey cuts him off and tags in Kenny. The Spirit Squad go for a poetry in motion style move, but Robby evades. Robby almost makes the tag, but Kenny pulls Rory off the apron. The Spirit Squad hit a nice Hart Attack, but Rory breaks up the pin at two. Mikey applies a headlock, but Robby fights out. However, Kenny tags in and goes back to work. Kenny hits a swinging neckbreaker and knocks Rory off the apron. Kenny goes up top for the leg drop, but no one is home! Mikey and Rory both tag in, and Rory lights up Mikey. Two Spirit Squad members hop up on the apron, but Rory knock them down and then throws Kenny on top of them. Both Highlanders are in, and they hit the SCOT DROP! ONE, TWO, THRE-KENNY BREAKS IT UP! The crowd really bit on that nearfall. Rory sets up for something in the corner, but Johnny kicks him in the back of the head. Mikey hits a facebuster- ONE, TWO, THREE! The Spirit Squad retains at 10 minutes on the dot.

Winners: The Spirit Squad
Although this was a bit paint-by-numbers, the wrestlers really brought their characters into it, which helped out. That said, the crowd was not feeling The Highlanders, and the finish was lackluster. 2 for 3.

J.R. tells us that many people bought this show for the Hell in a Cell match. If only that were true for when I plopped down money for the DVD. Another video package airs to hype the DX/McMahon’s feud.

Hell in a Cell: D-Generation X vs. Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon, and Big Show

D-X start off by immediately hitting a double-low blow on Big Show. They then take it to the McMahon family. A loud “You screwed Bret!” chant rings throughout the arena. Shane has been busted open. Triple H throws Vince into the cell. Triple H hammers away at Vince with punches, and then rakes his face into the cell. HBK throws Shane into the cell again. Triple H stabs Vince with a screwdriver. I can’t say my dad and brother-in-laws have never partaken in such activities. I’m no longer sure what love is. Big Show throws HHH to the floor. HBK tries to take out Big Show with a plancha, but Show catches him. On the floor, Big Show throws Michaels like a javelin into the cell wall. HBK has been busted open as well. Shane puts a trash can over Triple H’s face in the corner. Shane goes up top- COAST TO COAST! Triple H is bleeding from the ear, and Vince goes right after it. Big Show throws Michaels into the ring. Shane sets up the base of the steel steps. Shane drops Triple H onto them (lightly), and then SLINGSHOTS HIM INTO THE CELL WALL! Back inside, Big Show goes up the second rope. VADER BOMB ONTO HBK! Vince covers- ONE, TWO, Vince pulls him up off the mat. Vince says he wants to teach HBK a lesson. BIG Show hits a cobra clutch back breaker! Log drop! Vince covers- ONE, TWO, Vince pulls him up again! Triple H gets back into the ring and cleans house. HHH sets up for a Pedigree, but Shane breaks it up with a Torture Rack! Triple H counters by pulling Shane down to the mat. Jim Ross says if D-X pulls it off, he’ll be the most surprised man in North America. You and no one else, J.R. Shane is sent to the floor with an enzugiri from Michaels, but both D-X members are down and Vince and Big Show are up. Vince pulls his pants down, but Triple H is up! Triple H is disposed off, but HBK counters out of a Big Show splash by pulling Vince in the way! Both D-X members trip Big Show, and pull him into the ring post groin-first! Michaels comes off the ropes and takes out Shane with a clothesline. HBK hits an atomic drop on Shane, which feeds into a Triple H spinebuster. Triple H goes to the outside and brings two steel chairs into the ring. Triple H sticks Shane’s head into the chair, and Michaels heads up top- FLYING ELBOW DROP ONTO THE CHAIR! HBK tunes up the band, but Big Show pulls him out to the floor. Triple H tries to stop the big man, but gets brought down on the top rope throat-first. Show brings the top of the steps into the ring. Big Show goes after Triple H with the stairs, but HHH hits him in the gut with the chair! Triple H then nails Big Show with the chair while his head is on the steps! Big Show is out on his feet and HBK hits SWEET CHIN MUSIC! Big Show is draped over the top rope. Vince gets to his feet, and he is pissed. Both D-X members stare him down. D-X de-pants Big Show, and J.R. sells this as a serious moment. Vince knows that his fate is inevitable as they shove him face-first into Big Show’s rear. Vince sells the carnage while D-X pose on the turnbuckles. Triple H retrieves a sledgehammer from underneath the ring. HBK tunes up the band- SWEET CHIN MUSIC TO VINCE! SLEDGEHAMMER TO THE BACK! A “Holy shit!” chant breaks out, and Triple H covers- ONE, TWO, THREE!

Winners: D-Generation X
This match isn’t as bad as I remember, or as a lot of people make it out to be. However, for a match with horror movie levels of blood, I think that having a comedy spot at the end really ruined the carnage that they were trying to convey, and took away from the seriousness of the situation. After the match, the commentators did a great job of putting over the damage Vince and Shane took, and EMT’s coming out to the ring helped as well. For what was supposed to be a violent feud-ender, I really think that the “kiss my ass” spot was out of place, even if it was a goofy feud with DX involved. It’s still a good match, but it could have been great. 3 for 4.

A quick video package is shown for Wrestlemania in Detroit.

A Women’s Championship match between Lita and Trish Stratus is up next, and it’s Trish’s last match. They show a very nice montage that put over her career. This transitions into more recent events between Lita and Trish.

Winner: Trish Stratus
This was about as perfect as a match as you can ask for from these two, and I can’t name a better WWE women’s match off the top of my head. This makes me wish WWE hired women that were both attractive and athletic rather than just attractive. Trish Stratus had a great career, and this was the perfect sendoff. 4 for 5.

After the bell, Trish celebrates to a huge ovation. She deserved this moment.

A commercial airs for Smackdown. Theodore Long is shown in the crowd yet again.

Orton wins at 8:44.

Winner: Randy Orton
Parts of this match were really fun, especially the finish, since it was before, “RKO OUTTA NOWHERE!” became an old meme. My gripe here was that they lost me and the crowd for a while during the middle of the contest. All in all, it was solid. 5 for 6.

A video package hypes the main-event.

WWE Championship TLC Match: Edge(c) vs. John Cena

Edge gets greeted with a pop. Conversely, Cena is booed pretty badly. There’s a decent “Cena sucks!” chant as the belt is suspended up in the air. Lawler and Ross address the chants by pointing out that it’s Edge’s hometown, and said that this is why he wanted the match here. That’s not bad logic, considering Cena lost to RVD in an unfavorable environment. Cena gets the best of the early goings. However, Edge slaps him in the face after being leapfrogged. This match was fantastic. They recovered well from the botch early on, and delivered an emotionally fueled, intense main-event. Definitely the best match of the night. 6 for 7.

After the match, Cena hugs his father at ringside. Cena leaves with the title without pandering.

The 411: Pretty much everything on this show is worth your time, and nothing is actively bad. The opener was a breakthrough performance for Johnny Nitro, the Hell in a Cell was still good despite it's flaws, the Women's Title match was fantastic, and the main-event was a classic. Definitely check this one out if you haven't already- and if you have already seen it, go back and watch it again the next time you're bored.
