Views from the Hawke’s Nest: Chaos Pro Wrestling Infinit1 Gauntlet 2012

I would first like to apologize to Chaos Pro Wrestling for the absurd delay in getting this review out. There’s no excuse. I was just being lazy.

Commentators: Ron Trauma & Paul Couture

Bull Bronson (w/ Dalton Diamond) vs. Dave Russle
Bronson appears to be about five times the size of Russle. Thus, Bronson easily dominated Russle to start the match. He was in control until Russle avoided a middle rope legdrop. Russle made a comeback and hit a F5. Russle is very skinny, which made that F5 look stupid. Bull avoided a frog splash. Bull hit a powerslam: 1…2…3.

This was a lifeless opener. I’m not sure the point of pushing Bull if you’re just going to have a really small guy give him a F5. He’s not of much value unless he’s built up as a complete monster.
Match Rating: ½*

Drew Haskins vs. Matt Yaden
According to the commentators, this is Yaden’s first match in Chaos in NINE years. Amazing.

They ended up on the floor with Yaden in control. Haskins came back with a double axe handle to the floor. Haskins started to work Yaden over. Yaden eventually came back and both men went down after a Yaden gutwrench suplex. Yaden went for a frog splash. Haskins avoided it and then pinned Yaden with a handful of ropes: 1…2…3

This also was not good. By far, the most interesting thing about this match happened after the fact when Haskins sat down next to a fan.
Match Rating: ½*

The Kentucky Buffet (Matt Cage & Alex Castle) vs. Kyle Sykes & Zakk Sawyers
This has a chance to be entertaining despite the dead crowd this show took place in front of.

Cage and Castle ran down the crowd before the match, as they are wont to do. They also danced briefly. Sykes and Sawyers had a lot of success early on. Castle hit Sykes with a spear. Sawyers hit Cage with a tope suicida, and Sykes then hit the Buffet with an Asai Moonsault. Back in the ring, the Buffet managed to cut Sawyers off, and they got the heat on him. This went on for a while. Sykes eventually made a hot tag. He hit them with a double German suplex. Castle ate a Sliding D. Cage then did a DDT into a turnbuckle. Castle hit him with a Total Anarchy, and Cage then hit a diving elbow. It was more like a falling elbow. Sykes hit Cage with a Lightning Spiral. The teams went back and forth some more. Cage and Sawyers went to the floor. Cage accidentally “punched” a little kid. The kid didn’t show any physical signs of being punched in the face. The match was abruptly stopped as means of selling the angle. Meh.

Of course, the one decent match so far, and it ends with a worked shoot angle. Very, very lame. The Kentucky Buffet are a very talented team, and I wish they got something more interesting to do here..
Match Rating: *1/2

JT Mac came out and ran down Matt Cage. He demanded that Matt Cage should come out and apologize. Mac said that the fans would never come back because of Cage’s ass. First off, Cage has a very nice rear end. Matt Cage knew who the kid was. I know this because he called him by his first name, He asked him to get into a ring for an apology. The kid refused. Mac threatened to suspend Cage. Cage walked out. Mac then fired him. Mac tried to get the fans to do the “Nah nah nah nah, Goodbye” chant. It didn’t really work.

Infinit1 Gauntlet
Aaron XTC vs. Doomsday
Doomsday is a masked wrestler. He had a Bull Bronson build, but he may be a little shorter. XTC is the smallest wrestler who isn’t a mini that I’ve ever seen. They went back and forth for a bit. Eventually, Doomsday hit a sidewalk slam: 1…2…3

That wasn’t interesting in the slightest.

Doomsday vs. Trent Ware
Doomsday was completely dominant for a couple of minutes. Ware then caught him with a middle rope cross body out of nowhere: 1…2…3

I was a little surprised the match that ended like that because Doomsday is so big. However, I think that finish was for the best, as Ware seems more entertaining.

Trent Ware vs. Mikey McFinnegan
Mikey caught him with a spinebuster early to cut Ware off. That didn’t last long though, as Ware managed to send Mikey to the floor and hit a deadman suicida. Back in the ring, Mikey came back with a lariat for a nearfall. Mikey then got an O’Connor Roll and a handful of ropes: 1…2…3!

That was definitely the best segment of the gauntlet so far. It was solid enough.

Mikey McFinnegan vs. Hex Gage
Hex Gage does some cool flips.

Mikey hit a low blow early on. He then hit a TOPE SIDE HEADLOCK. Best moment of the show. Gage managed to send Mikey into a post, and he then made a comeback. Mikey came back. He went for a elbow drop, but he came up empty. Gage then hit a frog splash: 1…2…3

“Mikey McFinnegan and his mustache have been eliminated.” The ring announcer is the MVP of the show.

Hex Gage vs. Coma White
Apparently, Coma White has held every belt in Chaos Pro history. Coma and Gage are friends. The commentators did a good job of establishing who he is. Coma got the advantage. He was in control for a bit. Coma then hit the Comatose (Sliced Bread): 1…2…no. That spot almost didn’t work. Coma followed it up with a moonsault. Coma went to follow it up with an Omega Driver (apparently), but Gage escaped and got an O’Connor Roll: 1…2…3

This was solid.

Hex Gage vs. Number One Bob
Apparently this guy was on one of the few CPW shows that I’ve seen before. I somehow don’t remember him. He’s in a gold mask and dances a lot. He danced on the merch tables. Bob then “threw in the towel” and shook Gage’s hand. It appears he is quitting. He then bought Gage a bottle of water and fanned him down with a towel. Gage then pinned Bob with a backslide: 1…2…3

This was both humorous and a giant reminder of how indie this show comes across. I value the humor more though.

Hex Gage vs. Reed Bentley
REED BENTLEY TO SAVE THE SHOW!

Please save the show, Reed. Reed dominated Gage. Hd was also wearing a great tank top. He’s clearly good people. He went after Gage’s back. Gage finally managed to hit a vertical suplex. Gage went for the swanton, but Reed got the knees up. Storytelling~! Reed got a nearfall with a butterfly suplex. Reed then got a small package, but Gage reversed it: 1…2…3

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Reed apparently agrees with me that it was stupid; he attacked Gage after the show.

Seriously, wtf. Gage is fine and all, but that was an annoying decision by CPW.

Hex Gage vs. Christian Rose
I definitely would rather be watching Rose vs. Bentley right now.

Rose dominated the match. He went after the back some more, which means I can at least appreciate the story going on. Gage came back with a swinging DDT. Gage went to the top rope, but Rose then gave him a turnbuckle backbreaker. That had the match won for Rose, but Rose decided to lock in the Walls of Jericho. Gage tapped out.

Christian Rose vs. Shane Smalls
The winner of this match will be the Infinit1 Gauntlet Champion. Smalls was the proverbial house of the FIYAH. Smalls hit a big plancha to the floor. Rose managed to cut him off though, and he worked Smalls over for a while. Smalls came back with a springboard dropkick. Rose came back with a Falcon Arrow for a nearfall. Rose then hit a German suplex. Rose got the Walls on Smalls. Smalls made the ropes, but Rose managed to hit an elbow to the back of the head: 1…2…3

Rose is the first ever Infinit1 Gauntlet Champion.

This was an oddly booked match. Overall, this was probably the best thing on the show. However, a match with so many pinfalls in such a short time period has a ceiling on how good it can honestly be. I’m not sure if this match should be an annual gimmick.

Jeremiah Plunkett© vs. Chic Canyon [Falls Count Anywhere match for the CPW Heavyweight Championship]
This feud has been building for a while. I’ve liked the work I’ve seen from Plunkett. Canyon’s nickname is the “Strong Style Nature Boy.” Lol. They quickly ended up on the floor, and Canyon hit a scoop slam to the floor. Canyon then went for a senton, but he crashed to the floor. Plunkett worked Canyon over after that. So far, this has easily been the best match of the show. I just hope there’s a relatively clean finish. Plunkett used a packing strap to chart choking Canyon. Canyon escaped and hit a running boot to the face. Plunkett cut Canyon off again though, and he got a couple of nearfalls after neckbreakers in the ring. Canyon came back with a Finlay Roll, but Plunkett avoided a diving elbow drop. Canyon managed to hit a Fisherman buster for a nearfall. Plunkett came back with a kick to the nuts and a brainbuster: 1…2…no. Plunkett got another nearfall with a powerbomb. Plunkett called for Drew Haskins. He distracted the referee in a really lame way. He then gave Plunkett a railroad spike behind the ref’s back…in a match with no disqualifications. Canyon got the spike, but Haskins then distracted Canyon. Plunkett hit another kick to the nuts. He followed it up with a piledriver: 1…2…3

Canyon and Plunkett attacked Canyon some more after the match. Gage ran them off. JT Mac came out. He pulled a Teddy Long and booked a tag match for the next show. Chic gets another title shot if his team wins the match.

That was an incredibly lame finish to a match that had the makings of being a fine way to end the show. Instead of going on and on about why, I’ve devised a new means of displaying my displeasure with booking ruining good wrestling:

Strong Style Summit Part I
Matt Cage vs. Joey O’Riley
Watch this match right here

Cage bailed to the floor early. Cage came back to the ring, and they started trading strikes. O’Riley hit a standing shooting star press for an early nearfall. O’Riley hit a diving cross-body for another nearfall, and Cage bailed to the floor again. O’Riley hit an Undertaker suicida! Cage ended up back in the ring. O’Riley went for slingshot DDT, but Cage blocked it. Cage finally cut him off with a high kick to the back of the head. Cage started to get the heat. Cage locked in a STF, but O’Riley managed to make the ropes. O’Riley came back with an enzugiri and a bulldog. O’Riley went for a handspring move, but Cage caught him and hit a Blue Thunder Bomb: 1…2…NO! Cage went for a Gibson Driver, but O’Riley reversed it into a hurricanrana. O’Riley then hit an inverted C4! O’Riley followed that with a buzzsaw kick and a handspring moonsault. O’Riley then hit a slingshot DDT! The commentator said that was his finisher. O’Riley set up for a running move, but Cage blocked it. O’Riley then hit the Skull Crushing Finale. They ended up on the ring apron, where Cage hit a backbreaker. Cage hit a sole butt and a lariat: 1…2…NO! Cage locked in a Coquina Clutch style submission. O’Riley stood out of it, but Cage brought him back to the mat with the clutch still locked in. O’Riley almost passed out, but he didn’t. O’Riley did the Hart/Austin Survivor Series 1996 rollup: 1…2…NO! Cage went for a TKO move (I think), but O’Riley avoided it and hit a discus Brogue Kick: 1…2…Foot on the ropes! Cage blocked another discus Brogue kick and hit a Tiger Driver: 1…2…3.

This was a really good match that hopefully didn’t burn out the crowd since they did a lot nearfalls for an opener. Joey O’Riley impressed the hell out of me here. I am very interested to see what he does in the future. I’m more familiar with Cage, so I already knew he was talented, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I was hoping for O’Riley to win the match by the end.

Christian Rose vs. Jeremiah Plunkett
Watch this match for free!

Rose immediately hit a sick kick to the face of Plunkett, but Plunkett kicked out at one. Rose hit a running boot in the corner. He went for a second one, but Plunkett caught him with a big right hand that sent Rose to the floor. Plunkett brought Rose to the ring to work him over. Rose managed to send him to the floor, and he then hit Plunkett with elbow suicida. Plunkett accidentally punched the ring post, and Rose then went after that right hand of Plunkett. Plunkett says that he has the “best right hand” in the business, so this is sound strategy from Rose. Rose continued to go after that hand. Rose hit a Falcon Arrow for a nearfall, and he then immediately transitioned into an armbreaker. Plunkett stood up out of it and hit a Buckle Rampage Bomb. Plunkett followed that up with a lariat: 1…2…3!

This was my favorite match of the show so far. The crowd wasn’t as invested in hating Plunkett as they were with hating Cage, but the actual substance of the match was far more interesting to me. I like both of these guys and I want to see more of them for sure.

The 411: This was genuinely one of the worst wrestling shows that I have ever watched. That's not to say it's one of the worst shows ever, I just don't actively seek out bad shows. Chaos's Strong Style Summit produced two okay shows that had some redeeming value. There is nothing to recommend about this show. Check out the matches at the bottom to see what Chaos looks like when it's much, much better. You can support Chaos Pro by buying this show as a DVD for $15 or as an Video On-Demand for $9.95. You can also buy each match on the show as a Video On-Demand for $1.99.
