BG Says: PWG The Musical

The Musical

Time for trial DVD 2 of 4 for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. This DVD was the talk of the town when it was released, and PWG actually sold all of their copies of it. Highspots however did not, so you can pick it up there. Let’s get right down to it.

April 17, 2004 – Santa Ana, California

Your hosts are Excalibur and Disco Machine. Once again, you have to switch the audio track on your DVD player to hear it.

Chris Bosh, Quicksilver and Scorpio Sky accompany their heel stable mates Talwar and Mercury to the ring for their match. Bosh says some mean things to the crowd. Sky talks about his match with Super Dragon from the last show and the frightening finish to it. He says he now respects Dragon, and his buddies have a problem with that and tell him he has to wrestle KANE! Okay, I guess Talwar was just kidding, but he does convince Sky to keep hating Super Dragon.

Topgun TalwarCharles Mercury VS. Human TornadoSupa Badd
Topgun Talwar & Charles Mercury VS. Human Tornado & Supa Badd

Mercury hits an elbow drop for 2. He hits a series of knees to the back and puts on a chinlock. Talwar tags in and hits a shoulder block for 2. He hits a bodyslam and an elbow drop for 2. Mercury tags in and knocks Badd off the apron. The heels choke Tornado in the corner and Mercury hits a bodyslam. He goes to the second rope and hits an elbow drop for 2. He puts on an armbar but Tornado makes it to the ropes. He hits an armbreaker and tags to Talwar. Talwar hits a pair of clotheslines in the corner and bites Tornado’s arm. Mercury tags in and hits a clothesline in the corner. He misses a running knee and Tornado gets a low blow into a Sliced Bread backbreaker. Talwar and Badd tag in and Badd cleans house. He atomic drops everyone and hits a double noggin knocker. He hits a chokeslam on Mercury for 2 when Talwar saves. Talwar hits Badd with a chokeslam and tosses him to the floor. Mercury puts a cloverleaf on Tornado and Talwar hits him with a legdrop from the second rope. Mercury rolls him up for the win at 9:48. Decent opener, but the camera work makes it really hard to focus on the match.

Apollo Kahn VS. Ricky Reyes
Apollo Kahn VS. Ricky Reyes
Kahn is a Butch Reed wannabe from Pro Wrestling Iron. Reyes takes him to the mat with a leglock to start. They work the mat and Kahn comes up with a hammerlock. They trade forearms and fall to their knees. Reyes gets a headlock takedown but Kahn fights out. Reyes takes him down with a shoulder block and hits another when Kahn goes for a leapfrog. He puts on a leglock and keeps it on for a while. Kahn makes it to the ropes. Reyes hits a vertical suplex and goes back to work on the leg. He hits a clothesline and sits on Kahn’s leg. He hits a forearm for 2. He dropkicks the knee but Kahn comes back with a springboard spear. Ugh. Kahn hits a series of armdrags and a dropkick for 2. He hits a snap suplex and rolls through for two more and gets 2. Reyes gets a single leg takedown and puts on a half crab. Kahn makes it to the ropes. He comes back with a pair of northern lights suplexes for two. C’mon man! What’s with the bridging? Reyes blocks a bodyslam but gets forearmed down. Reyes hits a big DDT and Kahn no-sells it. Reyes catches him with a leglock and Kahn taps at 9:37. Pretty entertaining match, but Kahn’s shitty selling tainted it for me.
Rating: **1/4

Scorpio Sky VS. Disco Machine
Scorpio Sky VS. Disco Machine
Sky couldn’t beat Super Dragon last night, so lets see if he can beat Dragon’s fellow PWG owner Disco Machine. Sky takes Machine to the mat to start. He puts on a leglock but Disco kicks away. Sky puts on a hammerlock but Disco comes back with a headlock. Sky blocks the Chokebreaker and hits a monkey flip for 2. They trade 1 counts and Sky gets a hurricanrana sending Disco to the floor. He follows him out and hits him with a mini disco ball. Back in the ring Sky gets 2. He hits a knee to the gut for 2. He puts on a surfboard stretch but Disco comes back with a front facelock. Sky puts on a half crab but Disco makes it to the ropes. Sky puts on a full nelson leglock but Disco rolls back and gets 2. Sky forearms his face many times for 2. Disco gets a sunset flip for 2. Sky comes back with a clothesline for 2. Disco hits a fisherman’s suplex for 2. He hits a pair of kicks to the face and Sky bails. Sky blocks the straight jacket piledriver and hits a backbreaker. He puts on a triangle choke and Disco taps at 8:04. Really solid match as they fit in a lot for the time they were given.
Rating: **3/4

After the match Scorpio Sky’s team of evil doers all attack Disco Machine. Sky tries to show Disco some respect and Bosh turns on him. Mercury and Talwar join in the beat down as Quicksilver tries to pull them off. Looks like the tag team champions Bosh and Quicksilver are on opposite sides of this conflict. Quicksilver can’t win as Sky seemingly doesn’t want anything to do with him after the heels leave the ring.

The Thomasellis VS. The X-Foundation
The Thomasellis VS. The X-Foundation
Joey Ryan and Vito start. Vito gets an armbar but Ryan reverses to his own. Vito comes back with a legvice but Ryan reverses that and they work the mat. Ryan tags back in and hits a dropkick for 2. Scott Lost tags in and hits a leg lariat for 2. Kim tags in and hits a European uppercut and a dropkick for 2. The Thomasellis come off the top rope with a three post massacre for 2. Ryan and Lost try to go for their finisher but Lost gets distracted and dives onto other Thomasellis on the floor. Vito takes the opportunity to hit Ryan with a Demon Driver for the win at 12:31. That was a really fun and action packed match. It also kept the Lost/Ryan miscommunication story line going well.
Rating: ***1/4

After the match Lost tries to explain by saying that Kim needed his help, but Ryan doesn’t think that’s good enough. He says friends first, then the win, but Ryan is still pissed. Kim keeps the peace as the crowd chants bros before hoes. That’s not exactly fitting, but we get the point.

Christopher Daniels VS. B-Boy
Christopher Daniels VS. B-Boy
They lock up to start. Neither man can get the power advantage so they stare each other down. The crowd is solidly behind Daniels. Daniels grabs a headlock but B-Boy reverses to a hammerlock. Hardkore Kidd and El Jefe get in the ring and Kidd wants to pass a cuss jar around the room to make all the foul mouth fans afraid to swear. He calls out Messiah but its Teddy Hart who answers. Hart cuts one of his ridiculous promos and warns that he’s bringing a clique of people to PWG soon. He says he risks his life and breaks his neck more than any other wrestler on Earth for the fans, so of course he doesn’t wrestle. He buries Hardkore Kidd after Kidd talked about how low class that it was, and then brings out Lit and Deranged to wrestle him. I’m so glad this guy isn’t around anymore.

LitDeranged VS. Hardkore Kidd
Lit & Deranged VS. Hardkore Kidd
Just pretend that there’s a picture of Lit there, okay? He starts the match for his team. Kidd overpowers Lit while Excalibur quotes Aqua Teen Hunger Force in the process of making fun of Teddy’s team. Brilliant. Deranged comes in and gets overpowered. Kidd overpowers both opponents simultaneously and they bail. Excalibur apologizes to Hardkore Kidd for booking him in this match and then exposes Hart for the vagina that he is. Kidd dumps Lit to the floor. Deranged comes in and poses so Kidd intimidates him to the mat. He throws him into the turnbuckle but gets hit with a hurricanrana. Deranged hits a series of armdrags and Kidd bails. Lit follows him out with a dive. Deranged launches himself out with a dangerous springboard moonsault. Kidd hits them with a double noggin knocker and rolls them back into the ring. Teddy’s boys hit Kidd with a double drop toehold and hit the ugliest double-team move in the corner. They go for it again but Kidd catches Deranged and supine busters him onto Lit. Hart distracts Kidd allowing Deranged and Lit to low blow him. Hart slips when getting off the apron and takes the referee down with him. He immediately gets up and comes off the top rope with a DDT to Kidd. He goes back to the top rope and hits the Spiral Tap. He puts Deranged and Lit on top of him but the referee is down. El Jefe stupidly wakes the referee up and the commentators call him on it. The heels go to the top rope but Kidd cuts them off and pulls them down with a double stunner. He hits Deranged with an Alabama slam. He hits a CRAZY one on Lit for the win at 7:14. Simply awful match made watchable by the hilarious commentary. This match could not have been more of a mess, but the commentators called it as it was and pulled no punches. It also gets points for Kidd killing his opponents at the end there. Teddy does useless backflips after the match and the commentators ask him to never return.

Rating: ****

The crowd asks for five more minutes but Ricky Reyes runs in and he and Joe beat Dragon down. Dragon gets on the microphone and talks them down after they leave. He challenges both of them to one-on-one matches when he gets back from Japan. And just to add just out of spite he mentions that he’s a far superior dancer to Samoa Joe.

The 411: BG Says

Everything from the six-man tag on was good-great, with the exception of the handicap match that was worthwhile due to the commentary. A huge improvement over the last show, and if they keep this up then they'll have me hooked. You can pick up this DVD at Highspots.com. Join me when I return for part 3 of 4 with 44 Ways to Kill you with a Pimento.
